Pretty disappointed with FM18 and the still primitive nature of tactics, pressing in particular is nothing like real life defensive schemes. Also rigidity of roles and lack of ability to edit movement patterns of players to actually get the movement you want is highly frustrating.
Zonal defending can be man-oriented, space-oriented, ball-oriented, position-oriented and so on, or a mixture to come up with more complex schemes and can differ in style and intensity in different parts of the pitch, as well as having a separate counter pressing scheme or certain triggers that would signal to a team to transition from a midfield press to a forward press - eg. a backward pass to an opponent centre back. Use of cover shadows, pressing angles also non-existant. None of this nuance or sophistication is represented in FM, at least not in a clearly understandable way as to which combination of instructions are required to achieve any of the above. The result is a distinct lack of realism that made me uninstall FM18 to await future versions that match my tactical ambitions.
Ball playing defenders are just glorified centre backs that try through balls and bring ball out of defence isn't sufficient as a PPM to fix this. They dribble forward a bit and then run back immediately behind their invisible wall, creating a massive gap between themselves and the more defensively minded midfielders. You should have control of how high you want your defenders to stand, not be limited by invisible walls. Makes it impossible to implement the style of football I want.
Carrileiros far too central in attacking phase, although do a decent job of situationally defending fullback/wingback space when that area is vacant. Should also be able to have on a defend duty to sit deep in a wide-central half space, rather than moving forward and centrally like they do currently. More customisation to suit all tastes needed. I have heard some say this role should only be available if you don't play with M/AM RL. Disagree, as this would disadvantage managers who play AM RL but no fullbacks and need Carrileiros to cover that space situationally in the defensive phase when play is switched to their side of the pitch.
That's just a few things off the top of my head that ruin the game for me personally.
Will just wait until greater sophistication emerges before playing FM again.
