I'm looking at it again now, sorry but it's absolutely awful! I can't seem to pick a left footed player to take wide free-kicks on the left hand side.

Far too much to do, it's so rigid and convoluted. There was nowt wrong with the set-pieces in the first place.

I absolutely love it!! This alone is the reason I decided to buy FM24. I skipped FM23. Set pieces can account for 25goals a season in real life. It's been missing in the game for too long. Your over complicating it in your head it's a very smart easy to use system. Hats off to SI.

From watching the Alpha content I'm already sick of inverted full backs and liberos.

Should be absolutely impossible for lower / non-league sides to move off the ball like Man City but I fear it will work as well at all levels just like the dreaded Gegenpressing.

I don't understand how people get enjoyment from playing plug and play tactics from forums etc I have refused to play Gegenpress for last 4 years out of principle as it's been so over powered it feels like cheating to me. I suspect this new Inverted and Libero will be the same. I like the positional changes and I guess that comes with the new roles involvement.

It's hard to say honestly, it could be too strong but it could also make your press worse in some cases.

The way most modern teams approach pressing is they stay in shape and wait for a pressing 'trigger', at which point they pounce on the opposition and try to win the ball back. The OI is meant to have two main use cases:

    1. Use on opposition players who have bad composure or ball playing ability, with the aim of forcing them in to cheap turnovers.
    2. Use on opposition players you absolutely don't want to give any time on the ball to e.g. Jorginho-esque playmakers.

It really depends on your preferences which sort of triggers you want to use, but if you use the OI too much - you could end up making your team lose their structure too often chasing the other team around the pitch. When you've triggered a press, your team will leave their tactical positions to engage to try and win the ball back, which at times can be fine but at other times can be disastrous.

Other than the structural issues that can occur, there's also the physical exertion of the team you have to factor in - if your team are told to trigger a press whenever a player receives the ball, they never get a chance to 'reset' and have a bit of a breather. We have a short-term condition model, which if expended means that your players won't be able to track back or run as well until they've had a bit of a break. It could be leading to defensive issues because your team are too tired to chase back or track their markers.

Brilliant explanation which unfortunately nearly majority of all players won't see and won't understand why things are happening in their games as a result. Firstly thank you. And secondly here lies the issue why so many have complaints about the ME. It's a very complicated system but obviously has to be but also as a result very complicated to understand what each "dial" affects.

Always believed a greater level of "cause and affect" for each instruction in team/player instructions was needed.

Not entirely sure what your question is?

But in terms of recommendations it's all down to what any person finds important.  The vast majority of people on here specify that they want a laptop.

And to be honest, currently laptops is where the better deals are in terms of spec for the price.  And obviously a laptop requires much less room than a PC case, keyboard and monitor.

That said, you do give up the aspect of upgradability if buying a laptop, as generally all you can really upgrade is the RAM and SSD (and even that's not possible in all cases).  Also, you'll be likely to have a larger display with a desktop and a desktop is less likely to get physically damaged than a laptop due to the fact you generally find somewhere to put it and leave it there.

Sorry I wasn't very specific more just wanted you opinion and you basically answered what I was after lol apologies just could to open up discussion.

  5. @kevhamster I don't know what you think? It's your thread and I'm slowly getting back into my building of computers.. but lots of talk of laptops I get the whole mobility thing, moving around with it. But you ideally need one on a hard surface anyway to help the fans do their work. If you've got space surely a desktop.

    I run both a mid range i7 10th gen GTX 1660. But my desktop is 11th gen i7 with a GTX 3070.

30/70 spilt when comes to use for gaming.

Oh, OK. Out of interest do you feel its better or worse and why

I think it's changed a lot! And could be argued to be better or worst. But I think with the direction the ME has gone, SI should have explained in more depth or released video or videos.

Personally I think it has huge potential but there are 1-3 things that needs sorting that currently make it less enjoyable to play/unplayable.

It has changed so much that players/consumers can't understand how to master it. Which will make them not enjoy it.

Hi, I have a budget of £250-300. I should stress that graphics have no importance to me - I'm still old school and play matches in 2D!

However,I would like to run 3 or 4 leagues on a large database. What would be your opinion on any potential laptop options?

    Many thanks!

Thank you for your answer, I completely get what you're saying, might be time for a rethink 👌

Whatever you do take your time. So much choice out there and we live in a world you can click and have tomorrow. So just take your time. And like I said work out what will suit you best laptop or desktops both have positives and negatives.

Any advice off you lovely tech savvy people would be much appreciated, it's only for FM 23 watching movies and general Internet browsing. I do play the odd other games but they ilder and not graphic heavy.

Absolutely fine, fly through manager. I know laptps are the "thing to have" for mobility,  but honestly if your spending that sort of money get a desktop. Your get even higher specs at that money your spending or the same at a lower cost with the bonus you can update when needed.

I currently run a mid range gaming laptop, but a much higher end desktop.

Realistically we all love the idea of moving around the house, but laptops aren't built to sit on laps etc they overheat if not placed on a decent surface.

Bizarrely, there's more actual new features this year than there was last year, yet people are losing their minds at the moment.

Last year, the two headline features were the data hub, and a revamped transfer deadline day.  Plus they added in a new wide centre back role.

    This year we have...

Squad Planner, which is more than just an overhaul if you use it properly, something many seem to have trouble with.

Recruitment and scouting overhaul - Biggest change to this area of the game in years.

New defensive tactical instructions, and now actually able to play defensive low block tactics.

New Uefa Licences with completely revamped cup draws and in-game music, which you might think is nothing, but that's a major coup for SI

New supporter confidence model, which like many new features will grow as the years go on.

Dynamic Manager timeline (a minor addition admittedly, but still new)

But hey, Zealand says the graphics are rubbish so lets all get the pitchforks out eh?

Exactly my point, SI in a hard place of delivering a "new game" each year, as you say last years wasn't much new and maybe the consumers now are fed up?

Squad Planner really isn't much of a improvement.

New Defensive tactical instructions will only work once the ME is fixed.

Uefa Licences personally doesn't do anything for me but I understand why some love it.

New Supporter Dynamic currently broken and clear evidence of that.

Dynamic Manager timeline again a fancy revamp of information that you could already access.

I never mentioned graphics but he has point.

The changes this year have been mostly positive IMO, and the game has definitely improved.  Match engine better than it's ever been (and will be even better when they iron out a couple of the glitches).

It's a yearly sports title, so it's never going to look drastically different than the one before. That's the nature of the beast. SI's model has always been incremental changes year on year. You'll get the odd year when there's a bigger overhaul than usual (FM13 adding classic mode, FM14 doing away with sliders, etc) but generally its small changes year on year.

Bizarre that people are so vocal about this year's game when it's seen the biggest improvement to the actual match engine in many years, but I suppose there's nothing shiny and hypnotising to look at and there's also YouTubers influencing the perma gullible to whine and moan more than usual.

Of course, as the poster you've quoted hinted at, if you're one of those people who micro analyse the game to the nth degree, you will NEVER get any enjoyment out of it.

The ME changes could be fantastic, they haven't quite got it right yet, and for me its not playable until they fix some of the issues that are occurring. I want to pick up on your point about nothing shiny and new and here is the issue for SI how do you present a new yearly game as "New" this year there PR and choice of essentially "refacing" some of current features as new has been a own goal. The new "squad planner" is doing the same job really as squad depth is, and actually I prefer squad depth, Shooting themselves in the foot by claiming all these new shiny features when actually they are just revamped old ones.

In my view a better UI less clicks and a brilliant ME would have satisfied many and the majority.  Instead they've pretended to launch a game with "new features" which aren't  new and are just revamped and consumer have seen through it.

I've got 5.7hrs recorded on Steam for FM23. I've not started any form of save just played around. For the first time ever I have zero desire to play at all. I had already made my mind up that I wouldn't get into a proper save until after the Christmas update but now I think I'd be genuinely surprised if I even do that.

I'm past the point of being able to refund but I certainly would have, something else I've never felt before despite buying every iteration of this game since 92.

I'm used to underwhelming releases, bugged betas, historical neglect of certain game elements but I can't put my finger on what's happened this time, i just feel that ignoring this version is the right thing to do. The nature of the game used to leave me thinking that if you missed a release or two you could struggle to get back into it as it's so involved but to be brutally honest I think I could drop out for a decade and still recognise most of it on my return.

You know, I think I've realised that I'm actually more in love with the idea of this game and what it could be than I actually am in the game itself. Sad times.

Easily done, I got a refund after 30hrs of play, just explained my reasoning and Steam agreed to refund me. I want it to be a success and maybe they'll fix the number of issues and then I'll purchase it later in the year or next year. Gone back to FM22 for now.

Well, for the first time ever I've refunded it on steam. It really does feel like there has been so little improvements. CL/EL license is nice but it doesn't really add anything. Squad planner. Some people might use it I guess but to me it's a conveluted mess and I just felt like it would be too time consuming to use when during the course of the seasons players come and go anyway making the planning redundant. One glance at squad depth was all I ever needed.

Manager timeline? What's the point? Seriously what a pointless "feature"

The ME was pretty poor to be honest. Improved in some ways and worse in others. Top teams are conceding so many goals. Defenders ball watching balls of the top. I know it's beta and it will probably improve but not drastically.

I feel really let down. All the bits that we are crying out for are still untouched (set pieces, player and press interactions, realistic ME, Graphics, AI squad building and Tactics)

I also hate the incremental facilities upgrades. Why do I have to go from poor to adequate to good to top to state of the art. Why, if I have the money and stature, can't I go and build the top standard straight away. Stadium upgrades too. Stop closing my stand for 6 months to build 200 seats just because my club rep got a small boost. Again, areas that have been well vocalised by the fans but always ignored.

I have played every version since CM98 and this is the first time I won't be buying. Really wanted to like it but felt like I was playing the same game with the same tedious and frusting issues and to be honest I've not been enjoying them as much for 5 or so years.

So many of the features of recent years I just send the ass man or request to inbox. I feel SI needs a new direction as the franchise is getting really stale.

I also have no issues with bugs in the beta because....beta, but the player progression bug and balls of the top issue's, seriously how did they pass testing?

Don't blame you, I've just done the same thing. Its basically FM22.5 with "new features" simply old features but refaced.
