I find it really hard to settle on a team in the first month or so of every new game, there's too many teams floating around in my head that I want to have a look at, I make it about 3 or 4 games into a save and then get distracted by thoughts of how I could use the squad of a certain team to play a certain tactic, the furthest I've made it Into a save is November with PSV but I've started 4 saves since I last played that, however I know I'll go back to PSV at some point as they've been my favourite team to manage since fm13

i get why. im managing boston right now and i keep thinking i should've done a different save but im halfway through my third season now though so i have to stick to it. best of luck

I was offered interviews at a couple of Championship clubs and Brentford (Prem) while halfway through my 3rd season. I was top and doing well but not enough to warrant a crack at the Prem haha.

yeah its insane. i stopped my save because of it but i hope they fix it because unemployed saves are easily my favourites

I have managed Swindon for the past 4 FM's, always a fun challenge!

This year i started unemployed with all the UK leagues loaded, just got signed by Loughall on the 2nd division of N. Ireland, let's see...

i've always found northern ireland to be really boring, i think loughall was one of the few jobs you could get off the start in a previous fm and its the one i never took as well haha

Swindon Town in League 2 for my Beta save. Currently half way through the first season, and doing better than expected. Had two decent cup runs (3rd round in the FA Cup and Quarter Finals in the League Cup) - so quite an enjoyable game.

I have a lot of leagues loaded up, so may continue with it once released.

did a little thing with swindon last year and managed them in a short unemployed save this year, really fun and a lot of potential in the club.

Are there any significant risks to starting a save in the Beta and then continuing it into the fully released game?

I'm very finicky about my kits, I'd like to have the current home top for the team I'm managing, which basically forced me to Morecambe for my first save of FM19. This season I ended up getting the AFC Fylde kit for cheap (note; I've never been to either Morecambe or Fylde IRL, the closest I got was Liverpool), so that's my next save decided.

If I save-scum my way to having Fylde relegated in the first season of the game, then take them over in National League North with a fresh manager, would I still be eligible to get the National Hero achievement if I manage to get them to the Prem?

the only issues are that the game is typically a bit buggy in the beta, but that isn't stopping me.

i think if you take them over while they're in the national league north (like get them relegated, resign, then take over again) i think you would get the achievement yeah

I don’t follow real football as much as I did years ago. I know most of what I know about players and teams from FM rather than real life nowadays. Except the teams I take an interest in- Liverpool and Rangers.

Started Fm 20 as Rangers. Sacked by January. Added myself as new manager of Rangers again and was facing the sack by the following January. Decided to jump this time before I was pushed and applied for and got Southampton job.

No idea about the team or players but thought I’d give it a whirl. I have loved it. Two seasons later I missed out on European qualification by a point and lost in the FA Cup Final. It’s probably the most fun I have had on a save for a few years.

Of course I say this and now I will probably be sacked in January.

thats a rough time with rangers lmao

southampton again! they have to be the most popular one on this form haha, it does sound good though. best of luck

Braga, Managed a League and Cup double and EL semifinal.

Second season hasn't been as successful, currently 4th and spent most of my budget extending the contracts of my top players rather than improving the squad

thats a really good first season to be fair, braga aren't one of the title favourites if im right?

i mean yeah i guess making sure you keep a hold of your good players should be your priority but thats still alright.

Started with Blyth Spartans and won the VNN in my third season. Scraped survival first year and got to the playoff finals the second. Had interview offers from surprisingly high up the pyramid mind.

english non league is always my favourite. i messed around with an unemployed save before and had the exact same thing, did alright with swindon in league two and got an interview from everton lmao

Managing Southampton for the first year, then resigned just start of year to move to Derby in the championship to try that out, just counting down the time til the full game release! Signed Olmo for the Saints and he was unreal! Yet to find a useable formation that isn't GenGenPress

yeah olmo looks really good this year, 3 years into my save hes valued at 41m and playing for atletico. i can't wait for the full game release cuz the game is still a little buggy, but the new features are good

right now im using a high tempo short passing 4-3-1-2 thats working decent. gegenpress is always gonna be strong though

They start with Balotelli, but AI let him walk on a free before I showed up (thanks guys!). I thought I'd convinced Tonali to stay following their initial bid, but PSG came back and triggered his release clause (thanks again!) and never got another chance. Ahh well. Such is the life!

They're not a bad option, if you want to start in the top flight without having a ton of resources, but a couple nice starting pieces to build around (if the AI doesn't mess it up before you get there!). The rest of the roster isn't stacked, but it's solid enough to give you flexibility in how you build the rest of your squad, although, existing personnel kinda forces you into a narrow (442D, 4312, etc.) formation initially. Oh, and one nice thing with Serie A, is there's a fair amount of tactical variety. It's not all 433/4321.

damn thats rough, how much was his release clause at?

yeah serie a is always fun to be fair, a lot of 5 at the back which you don't really see that much anywhere else

I know, I thought I'd broken the game or something with my tactic so raised a thread about it in the tactic's forum!

Sold Elynousi, Hoedt, Cedric, Ward-Prowse, Lemina, Carrillo, Sims, Hojberg, Djenepo, Armstrong, McQueen, Bednerak, and Harrison Reed.

So it wasn't just the loanees, Bednerak left because I refused to give him a new contract after he had only signed one in December, JWP, Cedric, Djenepo and Hojberg all left because they weren't getting enough football, they all wanted to be regular starters and were more squad players. So got between about £8-£20 million for all those players, so it all adds up if you sell that many players.  The only one that was hard to shift was Forster, most of the guys on loan seemed to do ok and so had a decent amount of takers.

basically all the deadwood then, any big signings?

Got through my first (half) season with Brescia. Not only did we avoid relegation, but thanks to an epic collapse from Torino (12 points from the last 16), managed to finish 10th (despite being closer to relegation than Europe), and be acknowledged as the divisions "biggest overachievers." Funny, cause I don't think I've ever done less to change a team I took over midseason. Brought in one player on loan, started playing the LB the team should have been playing the whole time, and made the dramatic change from 442 diamond to 4312!

Tonali seems to have settled into the idea of staying, but some giants are circling, only question now is can I hold them off long enough for his release clause to expire...

brescia sounds like a good one this year purely down to the relegation battle as well as having tonali and balotelli (might be wrong on the latter?). if you can keep hold of tonali you’ve done well

He's one of the better FM YouTubers to watch in that regard as he doesn't simply win every week, makes it more interesting. Just a shame he's got a bit full of himself in recent years.

idk i moreso watch him for him rather than the gameplay, can’t say the same about a lot of fm youtubers though. i can see what you’re saying to be fair

Somehow I’m persisting to play wit spurs. They one of the last teams I dreamt I’d start a save as but looking forward to seeing how much I can bag for Kane, 150mill? 200mill? Hmm

i've been watching doctorbenjys spurs save and its easily my favourite fm related thing to watch at the moment. hope you're doing better than him though xD

in fm19 i started in south america, asked for more transfer funds after winning the league and the board denied me the request, i leaked that to the press and they fired me, after one month i got hired on leverkusen that were doing ****** in the league and stayed with them from 2022 until 2034, won a few champions leagues, like 6 o r 7 domestic leagues, the most interesting thing was munich losing his reign, by 2030 Schalke 04, Dortmund and us (leverkusen) had almost the same stature than them, it turned to be a really fun league after other team started growing, also having almost no restrictions on foreign players its nice

yeah that does sound really good, divisions like that can get boring after the same team wins it year after year but its good to see a twist being put on it

Always do a Southampton save on the beta, usually goes quite long term as well (because I can never be bothered to start it again when the full game comes out).

Also this year fantasy with Southampton is very much needed to escape reality!

Lost the league on goal difference to Liverpool on the last day, by losing 3-1 at Anfield.  So finished 2nd (yes 2nd with 90 points with Southampton, beta doing beta things), currently 3rd I think coming up to the new year in the second season, both Manchester clubs leading the way, Liverpool not doing so well after they sold Van Dijk to PSG for £100 million, plus Man Utd spend like £250 million in the summer and Man City like £150 million.

Quite pleasingly managed to make near £150 million from player sales over the summer, clearing almost all of the dead wood that was mainly out on loan last season, except Fraser Forster who is on loan in Qatar but is somehow in the England squad!

Team is basically unrecognisable from the one that starts the game, with only Ings, Redmond, Valery, Bertrand and Gunn, plus a few of the youngsters kicking about left.

Club vision is bit all over the place after the overachievement and I will see when I get home and opt into the public beta to get the ME update how my 4-2-2-2 Hassenhutl inspired tactic is holding up with the changes.

i've seen quite a lot of southampton early on and tbf i haven't seen a better one than yours yet. 2nd is a massive overachievement considering the real life form and to get £150m out of that is crazy. will definitely be an intense second season.

side note -- i've seen van dijk leave for psg quite a few times, it might be hard coded.. idk

Beta save for me - Dalum in the Danish 2nd division.  Stunned myself and won the title and got promoted in the first season!  Currently late September in the second season and mid-table - the league splits in two before the last 10 games, so hoping to get into the promotion group, just to be 100% sure I can't get relegated.

Waiting on a custom Serie D database to have another go at the San Marino Challenge for my main save.  The Sammarinese club in the Italian league system has changed this year, they are bringing through mostly Italian youth intakes in the game, so needs an editor tweak as well to make the challenge even slightly possible.  Not that I'll do it - but loved trying in FM19!

On the custom database note, does anyone know if Claassen is going to be creating his Leagues World Pack for FM20?  He hasn't logged on here for a couple of months, so it doesn't look likely...  Used his Serie D and San Marino databases in FM19 and top quality.

that spell in scandinavia sounds fun, all the scandinavian leagues are really interesting and a fun challenge.

ahh san marino. the classic. all i can say is best of luck

I started at FC Gute in the Swedish second division and won that on the last day of the season. I then left there and went to Akropolis in the Swedish first division elite and won that. Now taken over Norrkoping in the Prem and currently top of that.

Once the main game is out I will start a European journey man starting in lower France as never managed in France before.

i don't think i've ever done anything in sweden. scandinavia has always interested me and i'll probably do that at some point

france is really fun, i remember having a good time with metz in the 2nd division  in one of the many unemployed saves. would recommend
