It's bizarre and very frustrating. I had hoped to re-create a tactic in FM20 akin to years gone by where I could dominate possession in nearly all games (ala Barca in Pep years) and I can't find the key to unlock this in FM20.
I have reviewed so many games where the opposing team has ridiculous numbers of passes and I've set up a high pressing tactic to stop them from passing from defender to defender but my forwards don't win the ball back ever.
Teams playing 'cautiously' against mine often have 600+ passes and higher possession...it's like nothing I do seems to trigger my team winning to ball back and then keeping it.
Drives me mad.

Some of the tactics I have tried are the "Guardiola Confidetial" of FMKorea and the "Emulating Pep Barca" of Passion4FM among others, but these two (with their variants) are the ones that have best managed to replicate the guardiola tactic or failing Get high levels of possession.
Indeed, as you say, the Match Engine of this version of Football Manager is very bad due to what you mention. It is impossible to win something in the medium term by playing a high possession football.
Do not try anymore because you will never get it.
The game is designed in a way that possession lovers frustrate us to achieve success.

Man, I'm sorry to hear that. Unfortunately, the Match Engine of this FM (and several previous editions) does not allow you to play football with good results. That is, the ME is designed so that these tactics of high possession fail to achieve results.
I consider that the ME of this edition is by far the worst of all.
Hopefully you can find a solution to this. It is a big problem for those of us who like to play soccer with high possession.
The advice they give you is well received, but believe me, I have tried 9-10 tactics from different users from all over the world. I have achieved high possession football but I always end up failing in the results. Very disappointed!

Oblak; Wagué, Van Dijk, Lisandro Martinez, Koulibaly, Renan Lodi, Frankie De Jong, Bentancur, Exequiel Palacios, Paul Pogba, Ryan Gravenberch, Jadon Sancho, Fabio Silva, etc.
I have many regens of great quality (4 stars) For now the results have not been very positive, however I will continue testing. I hate this year's Match Engine in which possession tactics seem to suffer in the result. And I hate the typical 4-4-2 with which it seems to succeed in this FM.
Did you try Guardiola tactics developed in Passion4FM?

I tried it in 5 games and for now it is not a good tactic I won 6-1 against Arsenal which was really great. The other parties tied them all except for a defeat in the final against Tottenham. The positive thing about the tactic is that the majority of the party is dominated, but it is very difficult to score goals and the arrivals at the goal are scarce.

Oh man, Incredible average possession you achieved with this tactic. In a while I download this tactic and I will try it with my Manchester United three-time Champions League champion! Years ago I look for a tactic with very high levels of possession and effective with results, but I don't get it. As soon as I try it I tell you the result

Hello Friend, First of all, I am from Argentina, I speak Spanish and my level of English is very low so I help myself with the google translator to help you.
I am a fervent fan of maintaining a high possession in the game, always. (More than 65%) and for several years I have been testing and downloading different tactics to fulfill my obsession.
In this FM, there are 2 tactics that meet this goal.
One of them is the "Emulate Guardiola Tiki Tiki Barcelona 2009/10" tactic that you can find in Passion4FM. The truth about this tactic is that the game is VERY good, very entertaining and high possession works in most cases but the results, after all, end up being very very bad so you will end up getting tired.
The second is a tactic called "Guardiola Confidential" published in FMKorea and replicated in some forum that I already forgot. I guess if you search on Google you will find it. With regard to this tactic, possession also works but I didn't try it enough to deeply evaluate the results. Anyway, I hope you find my contribution useful.
Unfortunately, FMs are coming with a very defective match engine and difficult to develop possession tactics, which is a huge frustration for people like us who are obsessed with this attribute.
For the FM20, it seems that 4-4-2 is the tactic that works best.
