I'm not massively surprised you're seeing the game being slow with that.  The 10th gen Intel laptop CPU's weren't great and the i3's were particularly poor.

You'd definitely see a significant increase between that and any of the computers I've linked above.  :)

That's great! I think I've edge probably more toward a laptop rather than a desktop after all, apart from the one you mentioned above earlier is there any others you may suggest that where in my price range of around £1,000?

Is there also anything I'd have to keep in mind with FM 25 coming soon? Given it might need different stuff to run it than the current game I wouldn't want to be in the situation again next year of not having a laptop capable of running the game.

You haven't mentioned the spec of your current laptop, so it's hard to say whether you're seeing what should be expected or not.  But it is worth noting you can still get excellent performance on a laptop.

    Here's one to consider: https://www.currys.co.uk/products/gigabyte-g6-16-gaming-laptop-intel-core-i7-rtx-4060-1-tb-ssd-10257149.html

I think I should have now attached the specs of my current laptop if they're any help

  3. I've been having some issues with my laptop running FM recently, it has been very buggy and generally really slow to process through the game. I do have all the face packs, real names, badges, etc.. loaded, but run very few Playable leagues and my game is still slow and sluggish. I can go quite far into saves which obviously will make it slower but even at the start of saves this year I'm having issues with game speed.

As a result, I was thinking about getting a new system to run the game on. I thought it may be best to get a gaming PC of some sort to enable to me to play it faster and to have far more leagues loaded than I'd be able to on a laptop, but if there's a laptop that would be just as good I'd be happy to get that either.

I'd be happy to spend somewhere around £1,000 if it would get my game to run the way I'd like it to. Would anyone happen to have any recommendations on what system might be best for me to purchase?

  5. Agree generally with a lot of what everyone has said here, just had a few little things I'd like to add.

One thing that annoys me is when you sign a player, who will only arrive when the last game has been played but before the season technically ticks over, and it puts them in the previous season. Its just so annoying, and I can't imagine that this would be the hardest thing ever to fix.

Another thing is the managerial timeline, I would absolutely love to be able to remove, add, edit, etc..., things in it. I'd love to be able to add specific matches with it (with a generic preset template or with you being able to label it however you wish) that I though were in particular important. In an old Everton save I was midtable with not much going on, and then I came back from 2-0 down at home to Leeds to win 3-2 with a late winner, and after that I went on a great run and ended up finishing in a European place. I think it would be great to be able to add this in the timeline, as well as remove things that are included like random second choice goalkeepers I signed on a free transfer once.

Another issue I have is the data hub, I just don't get it and the advice it gives you. For example, often it will tell you to put 'work ball into box' on to stop having wasteful shots from distance, but once you put that on, it tells you to put 'shoot on sight' on to have more shots. Well which is it? I don't think the advice the data hub, staff, etc..., give are very good and are never too helpful, which makes the tactical side of the game quite difficult for people like me who aren't great at the tactical side of the game.

  6. I do think a huge issue I have is having a wobble when things start going badly, changing tactics to something my team has not played before and is not used too, or even one not as 'meta' as a gegenpress (or whatever defaults are agreed generally in the community to be good), and thus performing worse because we have 'worse' tactic, and one the team aren't comfortable playing in yet, or never will be because it might be a style that just does not fit the squad of players you have.

Changing the tactic usually leads to more bad results, and stuck in the so called cycle you can then find yourself.

  7. My logic with it has always been that morale, team cohesion, dressing room atmosphere, managerial support, etc..., is super super important, as suggested by Jack722. If your managing a mid table team for example, who end up by the new year in the top 4 for example, and then have a legitimately tough run and lose a couple of games, your teams morale dips and then performance and then results become worse. If you keep losing after the drop in morale, it will only get worse, likely leading to and more losses, harming atmosphere/moral further, and on the cycle goes. I think Jack sums up the reasons for why this can happen quite well, but that of course means it can be hard to judge what it actually is that has gone wrong. Are you genuinely being unlucky, or have teams 'figured' you out? Should you stick with the tactic or twist, to something new, potentially untrained, and thus has less cohesion, which can of course then impact on results  if your tactic was fine and you genuinely were being unlucky, having an off day which can happen, and so on. I think what's difficult is figuring out why poor runs of form can sometimes come out of nowhere, and if you don't know the reason for why things are not going well its going to be difficult to fix them.

When morale's down, the only way to fix it is seemingly to win a game, at least in my experience. But if morale is shot because of poor form, then your unlikely to get good results, and morale will thus stay low and the cycle continues. I think more ways to try and get the teams morale up may be a good way to improve results but I'm not really sure how it is you go about that. When your form and morale is bad it seems nothing tactically different you do works, and every shot on target flies part your keeper and nothing goes your way, which of course does genuinely happen in real life, but in a game its so difficult to try and find a way around this. The past few times I've had this I've just ended up getting sacked, or got really lucky and scraped a win and magically all of sudden the team performed brilliantly. Of course, again, this does happen in real life, its just I find it really difficult to try and find ways out of these horrible ruts you can sometimes get into in this game, so whenever someone's frustrated about it I completely get it.

I do disagree slightly with Jack though on a few things. While it seem to be counter intuitive, going more defensive can sometimes help score goals. If the ai knows your an attacking team, playing a high line, being aggressive, etc..., might see you pull them to pieces, so sitting back and letting your team have the ball, particularly if your not an elite level team with amazing technical players, might keep you out. You in turn might go more attacking to try and break down a defensive team, and thus leave more space in behind, have less players in defensive positions should the ai opposition counter attack and so on, and thus a defensive team with the ability to counter might score more goals being a more defensive team than they would had they been attacking, ultra aggressive off and on the ball.

  8. Hi all.

I've started 2 new savers recently and was just wondering how important coaching badges and past playing experience are? I know of course they impact the management attribute points but I'm not sure just how important they are either.

The 2 saves I have started recently, one with Everton in the PL and a Hungarian 2nd division team expected to finish in the top 5 (board and media expectation) and I'm doing pretty poor with both of them. I'm 18th with Everton 10/11 games in, and 15th with the Hungarian team 8/9 games in, and I've already had the 'pressure piled on manager' inbox messages for the Hungarian team. In both I have put the coaching badges to the automatic ones for the club level, but playing experience I have put at Sunday league level for both. I was just wondering if this actually matters, and hurts player support, morale, etc..., which then impacts performance, and then the cycle it goes around and around until I'm sacked, or if its just that my tactics and understandings of them is what my big problem is and if I had the right tactics the lack of past playing experience wouldn't really matter.

Sounds like you've gone a bit Chelsea :D Only joking of course

I have maybe a little bit yes :)

I've posted the tactic as well as some other things form my save in my last post so feel free to have a luck

  10. Here is the tactics I used for some of the last season and the start of this one, the 523, some of the results I have had with it as well as reports for my playing squad. I started using it in the 1-0 defeat away to Arsenal in the UCL, with the last game being the 4-2 win against Chelsea this season in the PL. The biggest issue I have with this is its failure to create chances at all, let alone good ones. In a lot of the games I won I actually outperformed the xG, in some quite considerably, which is completely different to what I usually have were I underperform it quite considerably. If anyone has any suggestions please let me know.

I also have the best coaching staff in the league. I don't really mess about with training regimes, etc... as I don't really understand it but, sometimes I get a message saying my players are unhappy with the general low level of training.

  11. I'm managing Newcastle in a glory hunter save and I'm in the 29-30 season, and I am having major tactical issues. Obviously being at Newcastle I've spent a load of money and have a team I think should be capable of winning the title, I did even win the UCL last season but this season I have massively wobbled. Nothing I use seems to be working, not even the Gegenpress preset seems to be working for me anymore which was previously my break glass option. I was just wondering if anyone could share what they are using on their saves and compare it to what I've been using and see maybe were I have been going wrong?

I've played FM and CM since CM2 and I couldn't agree more with OP, who I think explains it very well.

It is too hard to succeed these days, you need to be overly active and into details to perform well. Signing a very good assistant manager to help out won't help you achieve any longer.

For someone who has a family and a full time job, time is not just there and it just made me quit the game and promise I won't open it again.

Very sad to be honest. It's not what it used to be, relaxing and fun.

I think its hard for SI because they're stuck between a rock and a hard place, make a brilliant football management 'game' or football management 'simulation'. As someone who plays the game to relax or for escapism or whatever else you might call it, it can be a bit jarring the 'work' that goes into playing the game, which can sometimes make the experience not so fun. Obviously when things are going well in game its brilliant, but can be quite demoralising when things aren't going quite so well and there are a million and one things in game that could be making you lose games. It can be difficult to pinpoint what it is that your doing so badly wrong. In terms of being a football management simulation its fantastic, I'm not sure you'd fine anything better for any sport, but as a game sometimes I'm not so sure what I actually think of it in terms of it 'being fun'. I know that's not why a lot of people play it, and I know a lot of people see the fun in the challenge, but I don't know, that's just my 2 cents.

there just simply aren’t enough ways to understand when things are going wrong. The lack of info and analytics in games, except at half time, is criminal. I don’t understand this artificial creation of difficulty. Is it to force us to watch the mediocre graphics? I don’t know. I’m getting tired of the game and this company.

Could not agree more with this take. The assistant manager advice is notoriously awful which is one thing, but I was so excited to see what the data hub. But honestly, I haven't found it useful at all which has been a huge disappointment. I don't know if I'm just using it wrong but it seems buggy and not particularly useful. As you say its really difficult to actually see what's going wrong for you in game, whether or not its during the game or after it.

It's not a bad tactic. I'm sure if you got a set of excellent players you could win the league again. But some room for improvement.

I agree with the above post, the In Possession instructions are a bit contradictory. You've got aggressive mentality and tempo, but then slam on the brakes with overlap and WBIB. Hard to tell what will actually happen. I might consider removing all of the In Possession instructions, then seeing what you need more of.

Another thing is that your right-sided players are all kind of attacking the same space. I would change the Mezzala to CM-A to get more vertical movement.

Also, this isn't based on any football logic, but the PF-A could be changed to AF-A if you feel your striker isn't at his best. The match engine loves the AF-A role.

Yeah it does seem when having them explained to me well that it is a bit contradictory so yeah making them a little bit more coherent could help out a little. I have thought about making the Mezzala a CM on attack myself so I'll try that too.

When picking PF-A I did so because I thought that an AF might leave the striker a little isolated upfront by themselves and neither striker is good enough to play as F9 or DLF so I put them as a PF-A to try and get them more involved in play but as you say the AF is quite good so I might give that a go too.

Thanks for getting back to me and giving me some help for my save, I greatly appreciate your help :)

So, a couple of questions I would instantly ask about this tactic.

Attacking mentality: Is it really necessary to go that aggressive? You tone it down a bit with WBIB, but it might still just get a bit too hectic with your players not taking their time. Especially since you up the tempo even further. Not saying you can't play attacking mentality, but as a base mentality positive is plenty aggressive generally.

Every single in possession instructions to be honest.

Run At Defence: Don't have the game open, but fairly certain your front 3 and the Mezzala all have "Dribble more" hardcoded already. Is there really a need for this instruction?

WBIB: You run 2 WBs who want to cross the ball, you tell your team to run at defence and then you tell your team to slow down play and find a gap? Especially without a playmaker up front to dictate play WBIB in this formation feels out of place. Personally, I'd never use it in the first place as I feel it limits my teams attacking options too much (and if your tactic works there's absolutely no need for WBIB, players have long stopped the "I'll shoot whenever I'm 30 yards from goal"), but of course it can work. I just don't feel that your tactic is one that would make proper use of it with the roles you're using. Add to that, Scamacca is a great header (and Lucca isn't bad either I think?), so you should be perfectly fine with your wing backs just pumping crosses into the box instead of trying to go for the precision pass.

Overlaps: Your roles overlap naturally, WBs are very aggressive going forwards and IWs will naturally start cutting inside. Meanwhile, the overlap TI will change a whole bunch of stuff on both your fullbacks and wingers and unless you specifically want those changes, remove the instructions. You will get overlap anyway, simply due to your role selection, without having to worry about the knock on effects of all the other changes from the TI.

Higher Tempo: You're already on an attacking mentality, is higher tempo even necessary? Sure, you slow things down a bit because of WBIB, so in the end those two kinda cancel each other out, which then raises the question why not just remove both?

The overall selection of roles looks pretty solid to me. One that might be a bit of a question mark is the DLP(De). If you have a player there that has the defensive ability and work rate to be a proper holding midfielder and also the passing to dictate the game from deep that's fine, otherwise it might be worth considering changing roles to have the DM as a pure holding player and the BBM as a more creative role in midfield. Also, with a DLP right in front of your defence I'd probably use "play out of defence" to get your DLP as much on the ball as possible so he can dictate play (assuming again that he's a good playmaker).

Is higher tempo on an attacking mentality actually a higher tempo than higher tempo on a cautious or defensive mentality? I've never been 100% on that and was just curious about it. If putting the mentality down a notch might help as you suggest I'll give it a little go and see how it works out in my save.

The point about run at defence is a good one, I'll take it of as you say considering that the players I would want to be on the ball will likely already be on it.

My logic with WBIB is that it would stop my players from just shooting mindlessly at the goal but I've misunderstood what that instruction means. As you say Scamacca and Lucca are both brilliant in the air so WBIB trying to get the perfect pass into them probably isn't necessary due to how good they are in the air. Could it perhaps be beneficial to put on floated crosses so when the balls put into the box it is often with the intention of getting onto my strikers head or should I just leave it on mixed?

The point about the overlaps is a good one too, I've not quite understood that instruction either.

As you say having WBIB and a higher tempo doesn't make sense, so probably best to remove at least the WBIB instruction and try different things out with the tempo in my games.

The 2 DLP's I most often use are Parejo and Grillitsch who are both good on the ball and defending so adding play out of defence to get them on the ball more could be a good idea too.

Thanks for responding and giving me so much useful in depth feedback on my tactic, I really appreciate it!

  16. This is the tactic I've been using recently which has seen a bit of an improvement in form. I'm now up to 4th in the league after dropping as low as 11th but the leagues pretty congested with 14 games left so a lot could still change. Just wanted to know what people thought of the tactic and what I might be doing right and wrong.

    Screenshot (40).png

  17. was wondering if anyone had any tips on how to improve a tactic? I'm in my 4th season on my Valencia save, were I came 5th, then 1st, then 3rd. Currently I'm 6th 12 games into my new season and have won just one of my last 6 league games and have had the dreaded inbox message of murmurs of discontent amid bad form which is never a good sign. I've been using pretty much the same tactic since the end of my 1st season but have seen a pretty steep drop off at the start of this season. I was just wondering if anyone had any ideas on how to improve a tactic, or make better ones? Is there anything I should be picking up in game highlights, is there ways I could be using the data hub to help, or any other sort of stuff like that? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

  19. Just had a couple of questions to ask to see if anyone had anything that might be able to help me with my saves.

I was wondering if anyone knew if players develop and progress well when loaned out to teams in leagues that aren't loaded. I have had issues with loaning players out in my saves and sometimes only get offers from teams in leagues I don't have loaded and I am unsure whether it is worth loaning my players to those teams.

I've also been having issues with scouting in some of my saves, were there are players I asked to be scouted some time ago that keep getting scouted even after I've had the full report back and even when I've cancelled the assignment they keep turning back up in my scouting inbox as a player that had recently started being scouted. I'm not 100% sure how to fix this and would really like to know how to if possible.

Just took some time off work so I should be able to attempt to help in depth (ish). I am probably going to echo some of the replies already posted but here we go:

    • Generally when I create tactics I try to imagine the ball being played out from the back and through the team until a goal is scored. I use a tactics board for this but this is a good free resource: https://tactical-board.com/uk/big-football. I am also very risk averse so as I do this, I try to pause at different points to think about where the opposition could exploit if we lost the ball right then. I make notes of that, fix them and then resume. The key truth is that it is virtually impossible to remove all risk in a football game.
    • Having said all that, I tried doing the same with your first tactic and the AI would lick their lips at the counter attacking prospects. The left side would be exploited very easily if you lost the ball - the Mez(s), while not as aggressive as the attack variant, is still one of the more aggressive midfield roles (get further forward is baked into the role). This combined with the WB(s) on his side and the fact that Mykolenko has "get forward whenever posisble" as a trait mean you could get into some risky situations. I would remedy this by making Mykolenko a Fullback(S). And perhaps removing the overlap instruction on that side as well.
    • Speaking of overlaps, they're a good way to move your wing backs into good crossing positions but there needs to be adequate cover. Your right side isn't as problematic at all. However being the least gutsy person that I am, I would give Doucoure a midfield role that is more willing to cover - carrilero(s), bwm(s).
    • I realize this post is longer than I planned but I must power on haha. Another thing that is important is to look at the quality of team you have. You can do this by looking at the media predictions or if it's not your first season, where you finished last season.  The lower down the table you're expected to finish, the more risk averse you probably should be. The reason is that the AI is more aggressive with attacking when you're not the cream of the crop.
    • Based on that logic, an attacking mentality combined with high lines when managing Everton is asking for a lot of trouble. If you were managing Man City, Liverpool, or even United and Chelsea, then you could probably get away with this because teams would be too scared to attack you.  You'd also get away with it if you led Everton to league/champions league glory. There are many ways to remedy this. I personally wouldn't go with a low block because your team is actually quite capable. A mid block could work well.
    • Work Ball Into Box could also make things tough on the offensive end since you do not have creators of the calibre available at the big teams.
    • Odds and Ends: If you do take the defensive line suggestions above, then it might make sense to reduce your pressing frequency (your players and physios would probably thank you for it :)). Counter pressing vs regrouping is something I'd take on a game by game basis. There are a few other things I would do differently but I think this is a good start. I also think that Calvert Lewin is quite good but not good enough to play the Complete Forward to the highest potential. He doesn't have the passing, vision, dribbling required of the role. I currently have him in my Arsenal save performing quite well as either a Target Forward (A) Or Poacher - there are other reasons for this but I fear I am venturing into obnoxious territory with this post.

NOTE: I want to stress that I don't think there is any such thing as wrong or bad tactics (within reason). I also didn't comment on the second tactic  but you can use these same ideas to think of how to fine-tune that one as well.

Thanks for responding, and I hope you have enjoyed/are enjoying your time off work!

I’ll give that tactic board thing a little go then; I’ve never used something like that, but it could be really useful to see where it is I’m going so wrong. As you say I think I need to be far more risk averse, obviously my sides defensive performances have been pretty dire so I might need to be a bit more cautious and a bit more sensible with the way I’m trying to play.

I’ve found the overlap seems to slow things down a little bit waiting for the run from the wing backs so as long as they roles or player traits on they should get forward and still provide the width I’m looking for

I had been thinking of dropping the Mez to a different role, do you think perhaps swapping the box to the box to the left side and the carrilero/BWM onto the right side with the more attacking wing back could work? Could also maybe putting the BWM at the DM spot and the DLP (on support maybe) up into one of the CM positions?

My media prediction the start of this season was 13th, and I think that’s where I finished last season (it might have been 12th but ultimately not a huge difference) so in comparison to a lot of the teams in the league were one of the lesser teams. Were predicted to be as close to relegation places as we are to the European places. So, by your logic, I need to be very risk averse, which judging by the tactics I’ve posted here I have not been so.

That’s something I’ve always wondered, does what mentality you’re an effect things like defensive lines and lines of engagement? So, is a high defensive line on an attack mentality going to be higher than the same defensive line but on the cautious mentality, if that makes sense? A mid-block makes more sense, I did try a low block at points in my last season and while I did concede far fewer goals it pretty much neutered any sort of attacking capability I had so a mid-block would make more sense as you suggest.

My logic with work ball into box was that my team was having a lot of shots but not a whole lot of quality ones, particularly against lesser teams, so I thought adding that instruction could perhaps stop us being so wasteful on the ball. Obviously against Man City or someone, or even like Leicester or West Ham I might not have the quality to break down a team, but against the Burnley’s, Brentford’s of the world could it not be viable option from time to time?

Yeah, that’s a good point about DCL, he isn’t exactly someone I’d put as a deep lying forward so that makes sense. I have thought of putting him as a pressing forward or as an advanced forward. He’s definitely more of a finisher though so I do need to try and lessen his input in the build-up play

Don’t worry about the post being long at all, I’ve found it really helpful, so thank you!

I think your roles and duties are fine in both tactics. The first one is just super aggressive in possession so you're opening a lot of space on the wings for the AI to take advantage of. You're on attacking mentality, with overlaps on both sides, and aggressive fullback roles. For the second tactic it is the same thing. Even though you're on balanced, your fullbacks are pushing super high with no support for the CBs because of the lack of a DM.

Do you think for the first tactic knocking the Wb attack down to a support would be helpful?

My logic for having super aggressive tactics were because I worried I might not have the quality of players to break down the opposition and thought that if I maybe kept a more aggressive, really high tempo approach might have a better chance to score goals as opposed to a more measured approach with the set of player I have.

Do you think that a 433 with a DM would be better for a 4231 if I want to consist with full backs who will be going forward, given that if I have them on a defensive role to stay back and try to have a back 3 in a way to try and deal with counter attacks?

  22. 29 minutes ago, RPM_01 said:

Second one especially is prone to being wide open. Counter + extremely high tempo + pass into space just means instability. Maybe look at knocking the tempo down one and taking off counter and pass into space.

I'd also look at your pairings. So IF-At and BBM may, being narrow, try occupy the same space at times, so try and look to a CAR-Su to provide options between that and your WB with a little more defensive cover.

Let me know if that helps!

When I have a crack at the game in a little bit I'll give it a go and let you know how it goes!

  23. These are the 2 tactics I've been using, with slight variations at times, but this is generally the idea. The 4231 I've used to a fair bit of success on other saves previously. I've also used 5 at the back from time to time to see if that prevents the flow of goals but even that hasn't seemed to help a whole lot either. Just let me know where you think I'm going so wrong on it if you can!

Also just attached my last seasons results from the league. I go through little spells when I do ok and then collapse again completely, to change to a new tactic or style to then have a 3/4 game ok spell and then to collapse again, but that's not going to work and eventually I'll just sink all the way and be in real trouble.
