I've not read all of the above, but... lost in the nostalgia of Italia'90 and Euro'96 are things like; not really being that good in the group stage and requiring a late winner against Egypt to avoid the drawing of lots, a very late winner against a weak Belgium, relying on indicipline by Cameroon; a dissappointing draw with Switzerland, being a Uri Geller away from having Scotland equalise, and a perfectly good Spanish goal being ruled out by offside that would have put them 1 up.

Initially I was thinking that this is an institutional memory thing, and that replacing the entire management every so often means that you have none and are bound to repeat mistakes. However you're right on this particular point, and Southgate frequently cites his personal experience as a strength in helping the players mentally.

Well yeah, exactly. Total risk for zero reward, stupid. We're basically discussing semantics (or whatever the right term is ). Risk isn't something you are.

I'd say playing him in midfield in the hope that he adapts to the position was risky. Whether it was stupid or not is dependant on the degree of risk versus reward.

Southgate took a risk in backing TAA in midfield and it hasn't worked. I think that picking Gordon on the left, Foden as the 10, Bellingham as the 8, is the selection we need. It brings balance and plays players in roles that they perform for their clubs, and means that Kane has players on both sides running beyond him. However, whoever he picks in midfield is going to struggle if Stones and the defensive unit sits to deep and stretches us out. We can't be stretched out like this both vertically and horizontally.

I can't shake the feeling that the Italian nation in this situation would shrug, point out that they are essentially through, and continue along their way.

If it does, it goes to goals scored between the three teams level. If the Denmark Serbia game is 1-1 then it's goal difference for the whole group, then it's goals scored in the group. After that I cannot recall but there is disciplinary record, rankings etc. down to the drawing of lots. In a different scenario, where two teams that have just played each other and drawn need to be separated then there could even be penalties between them.

He played well in the semi at Anfield, delivered a very nice cross for the equaliser. He was by no means a regular but he did contribute to the win.
