In terms of a comparison, the closest you'll get in a laptop within that price range is this:

    https://www.currys.co.uk/products/lenovo-ideapad-3-15.6-laptop-amd-ryzen-5-256-gb-ssd-blue-10240220.html

As you'll see from the below, the CPU in this desktop is still offering considerably better performance in benchmarks:

    https://www.cpubenchmark.net/compare/4325vs4760/AMD-Ryzen-5-5600G-vs-AMD-Ryzen-5-5625U

To get something which is noticable for a performance upgrade, you'll honestly need to spend double the price of that for a desktop:

And even that, the biggest difference maker is the fact it has a dedicated graphics card, so will offer better graphical capability and a slight uplift in processing speed with the CPU.

In terms of performance for money, I think it's hard to beat that Ryzen 5 5600G CPU.

Appreciate the reply Kev thanks. I thought that would be the case with the desktop.

What are your thoughts on these? Using cashback, nectar points and some clever man maths I could justify stretching the budget to these if they are a big upgrade on the laptop you suggested. Looking at the benchmarks the 5600h looks like a better option but dont know if they extra cores in the 5700U make any difference

As much as I can see the benefits of building a desktop I think a laptop makes more sense for a number of reasons. Easier to take a laptop to bed as well when I am on a good run and dont want to switch the game off and give the FM gods a chance to ruin my season.

    Cheers

  2. Hi guys.

Not played FM since 2020 and that was on my current laptop which is about 7/8 years old. It is an HP Pavilion with an i5-6200U with 8gb of RAM. It didn't perform too great with FM20 and is just generally bloated and very slow for everything so I think it is time for an upgrade so I can get back involved with the game I have loved for well over 20 years.

My main saves tend to be long-term either starting in the bottom leagues of England or Scotland or full on journeyman style. I like to load a good number of leagues from around the world (most are view only), play with a large database with graphics packs and the 3d engine (happy to sacrifice graphics settings for performance).

Given this is pretty much only for football manager I want to limit the spend so I am considering building a desktop to get more performance for my money but the portability of a laptop will give me much more time and flexibility to play.

How well would this build deliver on what I would like:

    • Ryzen 5 5600g
    • MSI B550M Pro-VDH Wifi
    • Corsair Vengeance 16gb DDR4-3600
    • Kingston NV2 1TB NVME SSD

Total cost is showing as £418 including case and power supply.

In the £400-500 range, how close to that performance could I get on a laptop and what do you think would be the best option?

How much extra would I need to spend to get a significant performance improvement?

    Thanks a lot.
