Any tips for training, away games and big games?

What can i say... Starting mentality was mostly determined by the Assistant Manager, also  OI during the match. Then you can follow the rules from Mentality Masterplan, linked many times in this thread. So, in practice i was playing cautious against Juventus and Napoli in the league or in the final rounds of Champions League. Like in the most of high intensivity tactics you have to monitor your players fitness throughout the season, and rotate the team wisely. I made my own rule in this save, where against weaker opposition at home i removed all the players with matchload level "heavy" or "very heavy" from the starting lineup.

Of course, it's nothing new, many depends on the players quality. If you don't dominate the opposition, this tactic is a bit vulnerable in defence against equal quality teams. When i managed Leverkusen team, the rivals like Borussia MG, RB Leipzig or Eintracht fired a lot of shots against me, even when i was playing at home.

  2. @knap Have you been working under current match engine 21.2.0.0. on some tactic useful in the low-possesion and more defensive oriented (maybe even strikerless) type of play? I've created a separate thread here, where i presented some solutions for beta mode, but i noticed, now the counter-counterpress combination seems to be the most powerful, like in the previous FM20 edition.

I'm not the tactic creator, but I imagine he'll suggest you playing your strikers there. It doesn't really matter if your players are natural there.

You're right. The main concept was based on keeping our strikers close to our midfielders, to gain more options when exploiting the space behind oppontent defenders. In my save i simply retrained Lautaro Martinez and Sebastian Esposito from CF to AM/CF roles.

I also sadly notice that match engine update made the tactic less effective, especially in the creating phase of play. Actually there are many much stronger tactics on the forum, but mostly they use the same combination of instructions in the transistion phase (press & counterpress).

  4. In addition i would like to show the results from the next season, when i managed Inter team.

    image.thumb.png.4066627a98d0b3aa4a94f337e9506d43.png

The main stats remained at similar level. Low ball posession (47 %), low pass completion ratio (84%), tackles won below Serie A average. High number of clear cut chances created (38, best in the league) and interceptions (3rd in the league).

Because the tactic focuses on creating goal chances via through balls and leaving opponents GK on 1vs1 with our strikers, SS(a) plays very important role in the tactical setup. With Lautaro Martinez playing as a false striker, i had converstion rate on 19,7% level, almost 4 percentage points better than the next opposition team.

With a good movement off the ball it was even possible to grab away win 1-6 against Milan, with only 39% of ball possesion.

  5. As a big fan of fast and direct type of play, i tried to combine the tips from @OhhScottySinclair topic with more wing-focused play and higher defensive line.

    My inspiration  :https://community.sigames.com/topic/394126-the-rise-of-diego-simeone-4-4-2/?tab=comments#comment-10626426

Set pieces were not set by myself, taken from Zealot tactic, presented here: https://community.sigames.com/topic/534731-fm21-nostradamus-4-1-2-3-tactic-by-zealot/

At the start i would like to mention, that my main idea was not to present the tactic, that would give the most possible points, but giving decent result with a very direct and defensive-minded type of play. For sure some stats may look a bit ridiculous, for one of the best teams in the league, for example :

    napoli_stats.jpg.a6fdef124648743bd2f283a042c7237f.jpg

From the other side, it was balanced by the benefits it brings :

    image.png.38f1568d0cdc1a0b4c0ff5b6998cd259.png:

The formation is strikerless, like in the original topic by @OhhScottySinclair, with some changes on the left wing (removing Koke emulating wide playmaker) and at the front :

    image.png.db4c7b0546ca3b7e41e1a0b31b54d568.png

    helmut-simeone-counter.fmf

Even with the higher defensive line it gives enough defensive stability with a shortened distance between expected interception zone and opponent's goal. As you may have noticed, the intereceptions are comming not as a tackling result, but mostly from interceptions in the middle zone of the pitch, thanks to a full team engaged in a defensive phase of play and strikers playing very close to the midfielders. I've resigned from a part of speciic PI for classic CM(s), but gave them the strictly precised roles.

OI were assigned by the Assistant Manager, a good staff member can also provide some help in choosing starting mentality. I've set cautious as default, but especially at home against more defensive oriented rivals, you can also set positive or even attacking.

@Helmut  have you tweaked something? I have tried 20.3 and 20.4 versions for several games but I cannot get good results.

My defense seems very weak and I leak 2-3 goals every game.

I'm playing with Ross County first season (predicted 11th of 12 teams) but i was sitting at the 4th spot.

I haven't tweaked anything, but take into account that in Napoli i had a couple of decent defenders. Without good players in defensive formation you'll suffer from through balls played by deep lying opponent playmaker. and from advantage on the wings that AI builds up during counterattack phase. In my saves the more succesful for mid-table teams was the combination of two similar tactics, with positive/attacking mentality for home games, and cautious for away. With some tactics, like Sicilian 4222 i ever gained more points than at home.

  7. New formula for efficiency should look like Ef=TeaforOneOX+ @knap :)

Let's take a look and compare chances created and pass completed stats, pure efficiency, without unnecessary possession. Really mad season, where 99 points wouldn't gave me the title. Also, another win in Europa League with your tactic, it's slowly becoming a habit in my games. What is really worth to mention, despite attacking mentality the defence looks pretty solid, 25 clean sheets it's not a bad result, and it could be slightly better, but i wanted to pump some goals stats for my offensive players.

By the way, conversion rate could be better, below are my personal unrivalled favourites from Europa League ;)

  8. @Rober82 @knap I'm still using the old 20.3 version of TeaforOneOX, and i agree, it's really powerful. I advanced from 17th place into CL area, within 6 months of management, without any incoming transfer, because of 0 transfer budget in winter transfer window. Also won Spanish Cup. Counterattacks started by fast, good dribbling wingers are enjoyable to watch.

  9. I can't wait  to give your strikerless tactic a try (maybe with cautious mentality). I'm a very big fan of defensive style of play, and strikerless formation. Last time when i was very impressed with them, it was in 2017 when CelticFM prepared tactic emulating Simeone style, where both attackers were replaced by shadow strikers.

In the meanwhile... Lille won Europa League in their first season, no ingoing transfers. PreachingBlues451VOL4P108 strongly recommended ;)

  10. After 3rd place in 2019/20 season, this time I've won Serie A title and Coppa Italia with Lazio team, using FM20.3.0TeaforOne4222VOL2P100ALLCUPS. As seen in the pictures, i made just one transfer for the starting eleven. Really good defence, we conceded only 17 goals throughout the season. Also away from Rome i got more points, scored more goals and conceded less, than at home. In my opinion it's one of the best defensive and counterattacking tactics.

First season, without making any transfers in the winter window.

I prefer to start most of home games on positive mentality (and switch to attacking eventually). Away on balanced (eventually switch one up or down, depending of the result).  Because fast winger have many opportunities to cross, i used Bellarabi on the right side, and Bailey on left, but without changing their main tactical roles. During posession play they give another option for wide defender to pass, being positioned in at the edge of the box, during counterattack they act like classical wingers.

    @knap Very good job :)

  12. What do you think about defending in wide areas of the pitch, when playing in 442 formations? Here's an example of leaving some free area for wide opposition players, just before losing two goals from crosses. Against some world class wingers, like Jadon Sancho it could be very costly.

Maybe assigning specific player marking for my ML and MR, to avoid exposing my wide defenders on 1vs1 against pacey dribblers?

    Played with 20.2.3Wulf442DLKnap101ECFA.

  13. It's not so easy to implement in a team suffering from a central defenders shortage, also requires new position trainings  for most forwards. You have to display opponents tactical formation during gameplay and control it strictly, to assign effective marking settings for your players. Probably your main goalscorer won't grab a golden shoe award :) These are disadvantages.

The advantages are more important.  Top notch defensive play (see the attached pic below). Enjoyable to watch, you can see many players involved in offensive schemes. Very powerful set pieces (you can see it also in attached pkm file). Competitive against more powerful teams even without big signings.

Mentality changes are useful and hopefully anyone who uses them can post their favourite combinations for the benefit of others.

In my Juventus save very succesful was the combination of two mentalities, with a bit of tweaking during the matchplay. I decided to pick Oxford 41221 tactic, but with lower defensive line. All matches i started with cautious mentality as default, unless the assistant recommended a change (mostly switching to positive in home games against mid-table oppontents, or worse).

When i watched a match, mostly i paid attention to the shots statistics.  When i saw after 15-20 minutes that my opponents getting a shooting opportunities too easily, i lowered mentality by 1, even to "defensive" in some away games. Maybe it wasn't the most entertaining football on Earth, but gave my many crucial victories, and definitely the best record of away wins in Serie A.

Maybe it's just a coincidence, but finding the best partner for my offensive midfielder (Dybala) made me the biggest difficulty in Oxford tactic. Even Zaniolo didn't exceed the average rating of 6.90.

  15. Reffering to the tests from MRL site, i started a new game with Legia Warsaw using two tactics as a set, depending on where the match is played. I chose Oxford 41221 for matches at home, and Argus 352 for away games. As you see, the results were very good.

The main disadvantage is the need to have a fairly flexible squad compositon, because you need to fill many positions, I had difficulties in deciding which individual training should i choose for a specific player, for example when he is playing as a DMC at home, but as a WBL away. I can also recommend using "mentality masterplan" by Optimus (mentioned a few post ago) for learning about the basics of mentality changing during the individual match. Sometimes it requires many changes in one single match, but it's very useful tool in reading the match properly.

  16. Currently i also use Sicilian 4222, with mixed results. At home we're able to dominate Liverpool in CL (qualified from the group including Liverpool and Real Madrid) but in away Bundesliga matches, sometimes our defence is shattered into pieces. I started to change mentality and defensive line for those matches. In a result we won at Munich, without giving Bayern a single CCC (0-1, using cautious mentality and standard defensive line), but we lost in Paderborn and Lepizig.

I can say that Battlemaster V2 is the best tactic I've tried for FM19 :)

it gives me crazy results with Bayer 04

Do You recommend mentality changing, depending on the result?  Currently, i'm also playing with Bayer, but in away matches i have many problems in lead defending. For example, last match... Three goals conceded, right after two goal lead :/ image.thumb.png.feedf3566a9beb0cd21bfccf009a1978.png

  18. What do you think guys about transforming more  offensive and intensive tactics into more defensive ones? I mean easy changing tactic set even in the first half of the match, when playing 3 difficult matches in the distance of 7 days. I've tested some solutions during two seasons with Juve.

    1) at home or easy matches starting  with Beowulf 4231 press, then when leading 4411 Beowulf press, further changing mentality from attacking to cautious and saving some fitness points for further games

    2) mostly away starting with Beowulf 451 press, then when leading  Pilgrimage 451 cautious

In these examples i don't have to use the sub bench to quickly, and i can go back to more offensive ones, when losing the lead. Maybe someone has some better ideas for energy and lead saving, throughout the whole match, not only last 10-15 minutes like SUS solutions. Sometimes for me, playing more cautious and economic is more important than winning 7-0 at home against the league outsiders but risking an injury for my best players.

My team's defence seems to have gone tits up as well.

The yellow line signifies my results before and after the patch. So I went from conceding 5 before the patch to conceding 10 after it in only 4 games, including my first league loss to the team in 18th who scored 3 in 5 minutes at the end of the game.

    Untitled.thumb.png.470a435424b94ffcd41d9d2f20ccb653.png

IMHO, defending is much more difficult after the 18.2. update. Before the update i lost about 0,7 goal per match, from 0,6-0,7 opposition CCC per match. After the update - 1,7 gpm from 1 opposition CCC per match. From one of the best defending teams (even in Champions League, where we've reached big final) with defenders like Glik, Jemerson, Lucas, Sidibe and defensive midfielders like Doucoure and Fabinho i became mid table outsider, eliminated in 1/8 CL final by Porto, with 5 balls in my keepers net during 60 minutes).  Also Bordeaux hit me with 4 goals at Matmut Atlantique. Something that can't happen earlier.
