Hello everyone, if, like me, you've wondered who Manchester United's best ever team is, and had to stop when it became obvious that long since forgotten history can't be replicated now, then this database is for you.

I've come up with the Man United Challenge, it pits 9 great Man United sides against one another to see once and for all who really is the greatest, these are the teams I chose:

1. Manchester United 1909, fresh from a league and cup double, Billy Meredith's lads lead by Ernest Mangnall are hoping for more glory with their imminent move to Old Trafford from Bank Street.

2. Manchester Unitd 1957, Busby's Babes have just won the league and narrowly missed out on an FA Cup, the eagerly anticipated signing of Harry Gregg to add to the team's talents is sure to get crowds flocking to OT.

3. Manchester United 1968, Busby's men have just won the European Cup and with the dream trio of Charlton, Law and Best, they are expecting further success.

4. Manchester United 1977, The Doc has brought his brand of attacking football to OT and won himself an FA Cup, and with Steve Coppell and Gordon Hill on either flank, they are sure to be a strong competitor for glory.

5. Manchester United 1985, Ron Atkinson's side have also just won an FA Cup and with talisman Bryan Robson and Welsh bruiser Mark Hughes, things are looking up for the mullet wearing outfit.

6. Manchester United 1994, Alex Ferguson's double winning side featuring Schmeichel, Cantona, Kanchelskis, Bruce, Giggs and a young Beckham.

7. Manchester United 1999, Fergie's treble winning side, don't really need to explain that in any more detail.

8. Manchester United 2003, the team lead by Ruud van Nistelrooy when he was the hottest property in Europe.

9. Manchester United 2008, the league and European Cup winning side from 2007-08 when Ronaldo scored 42 goals.

The teams are complete with as much accuracy as I could muster/stomach, to ensure as much realism as possible. Of course it's just a game and this isn't 100% concrete evidence of who is better, but it's a fun idea, I'm sure you'll agree.

install instructions:

1. In your Football Manager 2010 directory, that's C:\Program Files\Sports Interactive\Football Manager 2010 on a PC, or Applications:Sports Interactive:Football Manager 2010 on a Mac, put the transfer embargo .edt files into their correct location. I have mapped the route for you using folders starting with "Sports Interactive" (By mapped I mean the order of folders you see here in what you've just downloaded are where you need to put the files on YOUR computer)

Note: It's slightly different if you downloaded the game using Steam. The Steam directory for FM2010 is, by default; C:\Program Files\Steam\Steamapps\Common\Football Manager 2010\

2. Put the rest of the files in your documents folder (My Documents on a PC, Documents on Mac), I've created 3 folders (editor data, graphics and schedules) so if you don't have them in your directory, just put mine in there.

3. Load up FM2010, select "preferences" and under the "extra files" tab you have the choice to either give a transfer embargo to all the created teams, or just to specific ones, it's up to you. I recommend selecting all of them as this will stop them buying and selling players right away which will of course take away from the "realism" of the database.

4. Start a new game, make sure you've selected the 10.3 database (and if it's not there, download the latest patch!), then tick the "change" option. Once the loading screen goes away, choose the "Man United Challenge" and you're good to go.

Have you made a seperate league with just thsi teams in it?

Yes, it's in the Cayman Islands.

Of the league, yes, of the country itself, no.

Don't get me worried about it after I've uploaded it all now :p

edit: i don't think there'll be a rep problem as before I gave them all embargoes (which you can remove if you wish) they were signing players like Busquets, Nani, etc.

Haha I wish I had the time James, or I would, but realistically, this one took over a month and I'm a United fan, I don't really have the motivation to put together an Arsenal one.

You should do one though, I had fun making mine! :D

very interested to try this one out---i'm currently playing as Man Utd on the legends database, which is awesome.

Just a quick question...is this a saved game file?

No it's an actual database, the reason it's 25mb or so is because of the graphics. If you want a saved game to save time I can upload one though, just let me know.

It's all mapped out for you in the file you downloaded, but if you don't have a graphics folder you can just make one.

Documents\Sports Interactive\Football Manager 2010\Graphics

It's in the Cayman Islands.

Not the graphics folder, no. Well, unless you do things differently. I just put the graphics in the graphics folder.

I like your idea very much. (Just as I also like the all stars / legend updates made by Chiellini and Deus).

I am playing a few other things at the moment, but I might give this a try if I quit my other games.

I know Deus' db, that was part of my inspiration, but I've never heard of Chiellini's! What is it?

It is also inspired by Deus' db. When that db had some problems, or something like that, Chiellline decided to do one himself. His db is entirely 10.3 compatible and has all star teams. (Deus' has teams from specific era.)

Both are fun to play with.

Quick question. The 94, 99, 03 and 08 teams will have a lot of the same players. How have you done this? Will each team have a Giggs but at the age he was at that time for example?

any info on this or is it dead now?

Yes, there's 5 giggs in this DB; one on original MUTD (In england), one in 2008', 99', 2003', 94'.. :thup:

Off topic question here, but how did you give them transfer embargo's ?

sorry mate, I was offline for a long time, basically you need to create a new .edt file and put it in Program Files\SI\FM2010\data\updates\update-1030\db\1030\edt

the embargoes i made look like this:

Sorry for slow reply, Stevo, and cheers Shzox for replying for me, but yeah, basically I tried to re-create the players of that team for that time, so Giggs in 1994 won't be the same as Giggs of 2008, they're different players.

Thanks a lot Walsh, the research and the pictures were the hardest bit, to be honest, as well as ironing out the bugs and ridiculous issues that kept coming up; the data entry was easy.

Also, I've merged my database with Metal Guitarist's 2010-11 update as well as adding a few tweaks of my own like correctly spelling some Eastern European named (Vidic to Vidić, for example); I felt it would give the database a more up-to-date feel this way. Hope you all enjoy it!

I don't know if you noticed though that some of the player pics are not working correctly. That is probably because you merged this with the update so the id's have changed. I thought it might be just me first but don't think so as I just ran it with only this editor data file.

fantastic mate. not really read much of the above so apologies if this has been asked.. player pics are working, apart from duplicates. for instance, schmeichels image is on the 1994 team, but not 1999, same for a few others. know why?

They are different pictures for each team i.e. the 1994 one will be of him then and the 1999 one will be of him in 1999. I just posted above why I think it is happening. It is easy to rectify though, just edit the config file and put in the correct unique ids for the game you are playing.

****, I didn't think about that. oops!

I'll wait 'til M_G does his Thursday update, then I'll merge again and edit the config file.

But in the mean time, anyone who has this problem follow jod123's suggestion and edit the config file for the pictures yourself (if you want to)

no update yet for anyone paying attention, my girlfriend got hit by a car the other day so FM's taken a bit of a back foot in my life at the moment.

I'll get one out eventually though, maybe when the transfer deadline has passed.

When downloading whats this difference between download and mirrors?

Basically it's a failsafe so if the original link goes down for some reason, there are "mirrors" to act as backups :)

it's the same file, just on different sites.
