Hello and Welcome to my 1st Player Guide on the one and only: Thiago Alcantara

Thiago Alcântara do Nascimento (born 11 April 1991) is a naturalized Spanish footballer. He currently plays for La Liga side Barcelona. He was officially promoted to the first team of FC Barcelona in June 2011.

Early years

Thiago Alcântara was born in Italy and grew up in Spain.[1] He started at the lower levels of Flamengo and at the age of 5 he moved to Spain with his father Mazinho and started playing with Galician team Ureca in Nigrán. He returned to Flamengo aged 10 and, in 2004, once again moved back to Spain, signing with FC Barcelona.

Barcelona

On 17 May 2009, aged 18 years old, Thiago made his debut with the first team when he came on as a substitute for Eiður Guðjohnsen in the 63rd minute vs RCD Mallorca.[3] On 20 February 2010 after coming on as a subtitute for Yaya Touré in the 76th minute, Thiago scored his first goal for Barcelona's first team in a 4–0 win against Racing Santander at the Camp Nou.

As you can see, a very decent young player.

I beleive that he is equally adept to the role of Advanced Playmaker/Attacking Midfielder (Both on attack)

Can be had for 3-5 million in the 1st season, but is *usually available on a free at the end of the 1st.

Just got him in the 2nd season for my arsenal side, and is being tutored by Cesc Fabregas.

I will reserve the next post for a screenshot of him in season 4-5, unless anyone already has one lying around.

He's pretty solid for me on my Barca save. I'm getting him into as many matches as I can and have Xavi tutoring him. He's labelled as being the next Xavi in my save and the reason I may not sign Cesc for Barca

what role have you been playing him in?

I've been trying to make him perform for the entire 1st. season but with absolutely no luck, beside from the eventual 'lucky punch' assist and one or two good performances...

Mainly tried to play him from flat MC position with various roles to see if I could get him up 'n' running. He doesn't seem to have the stats to play from MC, with his lowish positioning and the likes. There's really no room for an AMC in my tactics, so can't really play him there. Seems a bit over the top, to change my working tactic just to make room for Thiago :S

have you had him tutored by xavi yet? He really isnt ready for the 1st team in the 1st season, but playing in the "easy" games and the cup games have worked wonders for me. 14 appearances, 8 goals and 9 assists. But i play him at amc.

Yes, had him tutored by Xavi from the start, and yes, I also mainly played him in the cup games and la liga 'light' games. Guess it's the position as MC that just doesn't suit him. Most people who have been succesfull with him, have played him from the 'true' AMC spot... Actually I'm having the same problems with Iniesta just not to the same degree. Iniesta's quality is so immense that he does a better job at MC, but still not as crazy good as IRL ;)

What formation are you playing?

It's a flexible 4-3-3, with 1 DMC, 2 MC's, and 3 forwards. The 3 forwards are placed at the 3 striker slots, but the outer players act like wingers with my individual settings. The central striker (Messi) is a false nine, dropping deep to receive ball. Tactic works wonders, having won la liga first season without defeat, and just 4 draws, two of which came straight after securing the title with five rounds to go.

So with the false nine dropping deep, there's really no space for an AMC in the tactic. I've tried to incorporate it, but it ruins the effect of the false nine otherwise getting the ball unmarked and the wingers/forwards running in. It also tears up the balance in defence/offence of the team. So for now, an AMC is a no-go ;)

He performs admirably as the playmaker for my Villarreal team from the MC position, but whenever against tough opposition or a good 3 men midfield, I have to swap him for a holding midfielder, or my team can lose the midfield battle easily.

However when I play with an AMC, he performs amazingly and only Eden Hazard outperforms him here.

Offered 6m for him on the new update and still cant get him, he also has a brother that plays for Barca I'm sure his name is Rafael Alcantara.

I seen this guy playing for Spain Under 16's a good few years ago vs england and the new wembley and he was amazing IRL.

Since that day i have signed hinm on FM every game i've played as i knew he was always going to become as good as Cesc, and he does.

good luck with your quest! He more often then not becomes a free agent at the end of the 1st season, so keep a look out for that.

All of the Barcelona lot are the same :D Even the 8 year olds accademy at Barca (Prebenjamin) give themself shortened names! Is that the norm is Spain? Does a lot of people do that, even if you're not a footballer? (Completely off topic)

He's usually always available on a free end of first season. I just got him again for my Fiorentina side. worth 6.5mil straight off the bat and in the first team rotation with montolivo and d'agostino. Always get him when hes going.

He was transfer listed by Barca at the start of season 5, with a price of £1.6M. Brilliant buy. Should be first-choice for any mid-level top tier club, and a very good backup for top clubs.

Incidentally, he just played his first game for Italy in my save..

Scored against Real Sociedad on Saturday for Barca :) Good Goal aswell.

And looks likely to start against real as well. This boy has serious talent and is a mix of xavi/iniesta. No wonder Arsene wants him included in any cesc deal.

Great player. Tutored by Xavi/Iniesta a few times along with his brother and plenty of first team action (trust me he can make an impact with his flair, creativity and technical ability.) should see you with your long term midfield two. With Xavi as tutor you can bring his determination up to 17 and he really does become the real deal. Rafinha has slightly more balanced stats but can definately become a dependable CM.

I've had Thiago since grabbing him on a free transfer at the end of the first season. The lad certainly has ability and can be brilliant in certain games when he's played as AMC Attacking Midfield "Attack".

The only niggle I have with him though, is his Teamwork and Work Rate. It's for that reason I never like using him as a central midfielder and he's never looked comfortable, even when using him as MC Advanced Playmaker "Support" or "Attack".

I think I would need a specialised training schedule to get those two attributes up, to make him a more complete player. I've a regen come through though, who's the mirror of him more or less, apart from the fact he has the Teamwork and Work Rate that Thiago lacks. Therefore it looks like I may cash in on him at some point.

The only other option I'm thinking of, is retraining him to play as AML Inside Forward "Attack" or AMR Winger "Attack", due to the lack of quality creative wingers around.

Getting a little concerned with Thiago.

Although on only 12.5k p/w, he's constantly pestering for a new deal. He was good last season, but when I open negotiations, he's after 60k or more p/w. bear in mind I'm Granada CF and although I can afford it, I just don't think he's worth that at the moment. Admittedly he's been excellent in the Champions League this season, but his league form is far from inspiring. I'm thinking of cashing in on him, as I'm fortunate enough to have a couple of really talented regens knocking at the door for his place in the team.

Do what you think is best. You should be able to fetch 10+ mil for him i think.

I'd probably say cash in on him, no sense in offering him massive wage increase if you don't feel he's justified it. Maybe if his league form had matched up to his Champion's League showings. Did you get anywhere improving his teamwork or work rate?

I'm much greedier than that. ;)

There's always clubs interested in him, so hoping I can get around 20 million. That'll be what I'll offer him to clubs at and is still below the original minimum release clause I signed him up with.

Did you get anywhere improving his teamwork or work rate?

Unfortunately not as much as I'd like. Just +1 to each, so he now has Teamwork 10 and Work Rate 11.

I've got two regens, one with 14/14 and the other with 15/15 Teamwork and Work Rate, along with very good other attributes and heaps of potential. They're already performing well in matches too.

Thiago's technical attributes have improved very well, but as a fan of good mental attributes with any of the midfield positions, he's perhaps developed as far as he will to suit my own preferences. He has been a good player for sure, but it's a little frustrating that he's been fantastic in the Champions League, yet poor in domestic competitions like the Liga BBVA and Copa del Rey. Still, it's his Champions League performances that will put him in the shop window for any potential bidders.

I've spent big on him - he seemed to match what I want but isn't doing the business. If I can get my money back at the end of the season I will be happy.

I'm managing Hull City and my midfield trio is Cairney, Sunny and Vanden Borre. Thiago is on the bench! (Season 3 btw)
