[FM11] Spennymoor Town: Northern League to Premier League

Recommended Posts

Hello, and welcome to my first, and quite possibly only FM career thread. Having just recentley bought a new laptop for FM and being extremely interested in the threads created by hrbfcrule and dafuge I decided that I would give this a go.

Before I start, this will keep me going only up until FM12 is released on its expected date of October 21st 2011. I am due to go on holiday before that so this will only be a short career to keep me going until its release. Also, due to low internet availability to myself which can only be accessed via my mobile, my girlfriends dongle which only has an hour or two available a night and the internet at work which we get our ass kicked for using (oooops I am using it now ;)) I wont be able to add as much detail as I would like to, but I will try and keep this as up to date as possible and WILL, at some point answer all questions which anyone may post.

Another note: I am already halfway through my second season with Spennymoor Town so I will have to back date this thread when I play FM tonight at home.

Now, here, we, go.............

So Why Spennymoor Town????

I decided my destiny and new adventure was the path of Spennymoor Town. I am born and bread in County Durham and have lived in and around the Spennymoor area my entire life (until my recent move). I used to go to every Spennymoor home game when I was around 8 years old and love the feel and atmosphere of a lower league club. I have always found it thrilling. Plus, when I was a Middlesbrough youth player I used to enjoy regular pre-season games against Spennymoor.

Seaon Review - 2010/11

Northern League Division One

League Table - http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/705/skilltrainingltdnorther.png/

As you can see, I completely ran away with things. I felt comfortable in the league all season long, and it wasnt until after Christmas that I dropped my first points of the season. Smooth sailing in the Northern League to gain promotion to the.....................................Evo-Stik Division One SOUTH, seriously????? How can a team in the North East of England, only 30mins away from Newcastle be playing in the Southern Divisions? Baffles me anyway.

FA Cup

Fixtures - http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/43/spennymoortownspennymoo.png/

-v- Boreham Wood (3rd Qual. Round) - http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/23/borehamwoodvspennymoori.png/

-v- Stockport (1st Round) - http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/155/stockportvspennymoorspl.png/

The FA Cup ended up being an enjoyable experience in which I reached the 1st Round proper of the FA Cup, and also gave a Stockport side much higher than me in the league system a good run for their money. I felt that I deserved a draw but it just wasnt to be.

FA Vase

Fixtures - http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/718/spennymoortownspennymoo.png/

Final - http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/713/derehamvspennymoorsplit.png/

The FA Vase saw me pretty much walk all the way to the final. The only defeat came in the Semi-Final 2nd Leg which based on my form, I already felt the tie was over, despite playing against higher level opposition. The Final saw me creep past Dereham to lift the trophy at Wembley.

Durham Challenge Cup

Fixtures - http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/268/spennymoortownspennymoo.png/

Final - http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/713/spennymoorvhartlepoolre.png/

Another competition which saw me pretty much walk all the way to the final, where I met the early favourites, Hartlepool Reserves. In what was a tight affair at Brewery Field, a late Steven Richardson header saw me lift the Durham Challenge Cup.

Northern League Cup

Fixtures - http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/163/spennymoortownspennymoo.png/

Final - http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/84/birtleyvspennymoorsplit.png/

Another competition, another trophy. This was one of four in my debut season as manager and a one which I thoroughly deserved. An easy walk to the final.

Star Performer

Steven Richardson - http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/13/stevenrichardsonhistory.png/

A whopping 72 goals from my star striker over the course of a fantastic season, both personally and for the team. By far the best performer in the side and the former Gateshead player cemented his place in the fans hearts.

Next Season

Despite stupidly being placed in the Southern Divisions for next season, I am hoping the traveling up and down the country wont hamper me to much and I will be able to cement my place in the league. Another couple of cup runs would be nice because it really helped my bank balance which now stands at a healthy £113k.

I will be looking to strengthen in numerous areas which will help and add depth to my squad.

I know it has been a brief update to date, but as mentioned in my OP I am currently half way through my 2nd season, so until I catch up, things will be brief, and then I will get into a little more detail.

Season Preview 2011/12

During the off season the chairman decided to turn the club Semi-Professional which is a massive step up. One, it means that we should be able to attract higher reputation players because of two, having to pay wages, which isnt a brilliant thing in another way ha.

The pitch is in appauling state, but despite asking the board FIVE times to relay it, they state that due to money issues we are unable to do so.

Media Prediction: 9th

Board Expectation: Respectable League Position

FA Cup: Enjoy the experience

FA Trophy: Second Qualifying Round

Durham County FA Challenge Cup: Quater Finals

Norhern League Presidents Cup: Third Round

Northern League Challenge Cup: First Round

Well as you can see, I brought a few experienced faces in during the transfer window and added quite a lot of quality to the side throughout. I will be posting an end of season update when I finally get there (will most likely be tomorrow) and from there on out I will be moving to monthly updates.

Enjoy reading fella's

Monthly Update - February 2012

Results - League

Loughborough Dynamo 0

Spennymoor 1 (Richardson 12')

Barwell 1 (Pitcher 46')

Spennymoor 3 (Emms 33'; Darley 62'; Richardson 71')

Glapwell 1 (Whitehurst 84')

Spennymoor 1 (Austin OG 78')

Brigg 1 (Mike 33')

Spennymoor 2 (Milner OG 42'; Jones 61')

Westfields 2 (Upcott 45', 52')

Spennymoor 2 (Darley 47'; Galer 73'; Richardson SO 87')

A really, really tough month for my players in the league, with every single fixture being away from home. I believe all the long winded coach journies down south have taken their tole on the lads, but the following month is started with 4 home fixtures. I find myself sitting second in the league, 1pt behind Glapwell with 5 games in hand.

Results - Durham Challenge Cup Semi-Final

West Auckland 3 (Harding 11'; Smith pen 88'; Banks 90)

Spennymoor 2 (Snowdon 53'; Richardson 90+1'; Sinclair SO 85')

My hopes of retaining the trophy ended at the Semi-Final stage. Quite a tight affair considering I was playing relegation candidates from a lower league but Frank Sinclair's stupid red card 5mins and 7th of the season  from time practically gave them victory. In what was a tough month fixture wise to try and catch up in the league fixtures, my players were just to tired to hit back following Smith's 88th minute penalty. A good effort, but its West Auckland who meet Gateshead in the Final.

Link to post

arrrrrrrrrrrgh  this catching up in league fixtures is really taking its toll on my squad. Tired legs all round, week in, week out and it is certainly a crawl to the finish line. 9 games left in the league, just been beat by the side bottom of the league and having already played 6 games in March and its only the 17th, I have another 4 games left in the month. Really finding it tough now.

Monthly update will be on its way when I finally see the end of this awful month.

I know why you're in the league that you're in. uncle ron said that due to not being able to make it fully correct sometimes teams will go in to divisions they wouldn't in real life. But it will fix itself as soon as possible, I think. He's explained it in the OP of his thread.

Well done on the promotion and I see you're doing well in the league at the moment. Another promotion possibly?

Link to post

Ahhhhh right. Thats me not reading through properly then. Cheers for that NF

Promotion could happen, but its going to be tense. Im 3pts clear after 33 games, but have 2 and 3 games in hand over my closest rivals. If I continue to pick up points I should, but I am struggling due to player fatigue.

Monthly Update - March 2012

Well, well, well. What an AWFUL month this was to completely dent confidence in my promotion push. See below for results:

Results - League

Spalding 1 (Cooper OG 90+3')

Spennymoor 1 (Boyle 16')

Spennymoor 3 (Phelan 6'; Richardson 59', 80')

Romulus 1 (Joyce 9')

Spennymoor 1 (Galer 88')

Stamford 1 (Martin 90+1')

Spennymoor 2 (Richardson 7'; Jones 84')

Spalding 0 (Steadman SO 75')

Spennymoor 2 (Jones 56'; Boyle 86'; Brackstone SO 54')

Leek 1 (Longstaff eyyyyyy ;) 34')

Rainworth MW 1 (Rule 86')

Spennymoor 0

Spennymoor 0

Grantham 1 (Priest 36')

Spennymoor 1 (Emms 79'; Snowdon SO 45+1')

Glapwell 1 (Brown 5')

Leek 1 (Lovell 63')

Spennymoor 0

As you can see, disastourous. The players confidence is shot and even though I am level on points with Glapwell and have two games in hand, Im not confident myself anymore. League table below:

evostikleaguefirstdivis.png

Results - Northern League President's Cup Semi-Final

Barwell 2 (Lewis 77', 83')

Spennymoor 3 (Darley 32'; Richardson pen 44'; Jones 90+2)

After Lewis equilised my head dropped. I was devistated. Dominated all game and then BANG, two quick fire goals. I was preparing for ET when a short back pass by a Barwell defender left their keeper stranded & he lost posession to Jones who rolled it into an empty net from 25yrds to send me into the final.

Confidence is back with two huge wins :)

A 4-1 win at home to Stourport is closely followed by a 4-0 away to Rushall to put me 4pts ahead of the chasing pack with a game in hand and just 4 games to go.

Nearly there!!!

Link to post

A 1-0 at home to Brigg puts me on the brink of promotion with 2 games to go. 7pts clear of 2nd & 3rd, with 4th place Glapwell 9pts behind, but with a game in hand. If they win that, 1pt from my final 2 games seals back-to-back promotions :)

Edit: Glapwell 3-0 Barwell

2 games to go, 6pts clear!!

Monthly Update - April 2011

Spennymoor 4 (Galer 10', 24'; Phelan 20'; Emms 56')

Stourport 1 (Fehmi 45+3')

Rushall 0

Spennymoor 4 (Haggerty 19', 39'; Richardson 32', 35')

Sheffield 1 (Jones 38')

Spennymoor 0 (Hurley SO 74')

Spennymoor 1 (Galer 13')

Brigg 0

Spennymoor 2 (Galer 77'; Jones 86')

Barwell 0

Warrington 3 (Johnson 11', 58', 68')

Spennymoor 0

The defeat to end the season was all but important because:

stevenlongstaffnewsinbo.png

And the league table ended up looking like this:

I still have a cup final to look forward to where I will give an update once complete, before doing an end of season review

Northern League Presidents Cup Final

garforthvspennymoorspli.png

Another cup trophy in the bag thanks to a late Steven Richardson goal :)

I dominated the final overall and it should have been much more. The only time I was nervous was when Garforth went on the attack in added time, but I dominated overall.

I will be posting an end of season review in the next 20-30mins or so.

2011/12 Season Review - Evo-Stik League First Division South

Last season we walked to the league title in the Northern League, and this was a massive step up for us. I was hoping to cement myself in mid-table before pushing on, but was I to be wrong

League Table - http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/571/evostikleaguefirstdivis.png/

There were difficulties along the way, especially later on in the season when I was playing catch up in fixtures and fatigue was kicking in. We came through it though and managed to win the title in the pernultimate game of the season.

FA Cup - http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/38/spennymoortownspennymoo.png/ After a lovely run last season with us reaching the First Round proper, I was optomistic this season, but things didnt go to well and we bowed out early.

FA Trophy - http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/38/spennymoortownspennymoof.png/ A nice run to the First Round proper of the FA Trophy, taking the scalps of higher level opposition in Blyth & Solihull Motors, but things came to an abrupt end with a well deserved defeat away to Hayes & Yeading.

Northern League Presidents Cup - http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/13/spennymoortownspennymoo.png/ Following success in the league, the club lifted its second trophy of the season and 6th overall in just two years after a well deserved 1-0 victory in the Final (Please see above post for Final info).

Durham Challenge Cup - http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/823/spennymoortownspennymoo.png/ As defending Champions I was hoping for a repeat of last season in a competition which pays out a lot of money per victory for a competition at this level of the football scale and was optomistic heading into the Semi-Final against lower league opposition in West Auckland but it just should wasnt to be following a 3-2 defeat.

Northern League Challenge Cup - http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/51/spennymoortownspennymoo.png/ After a positive start away to Durham City, I was hoping for another victory in the next round, but despite a high scoring affair and penalties, I just couldnt seem to do it and bowed out in the 1st Round.

Transfers/Finances

Transfers - http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/15/spennymoortowntransfers.png/ I brought in a lot of high profile players to help me challenge at this level and they proved to be shrewed acquisitions. Jack Boyle was an extremely impressive signing on the left hand side and the older players in Sinclair, Austin & Taylor proved very vital with their experience.

Finances - http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/571/spennymoortownboardroom.png/ Not bad considering I have only just turned into a Semi-Professional club at the start of the season. Going far in cup competitions was vital to help cancel out the £1.6k p/w I was paying out in wages.

Squad/Key Players

Squad - http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/838/spennymoortownspennymoo.png/ A few players will be heading out the door, especially 40yo Frank Sinclair, 38yo Gareth Taylor & 38yo Kevin Austin. There will be others who I dont think are up to the challenge of competing at a higher level.

Steven Richardson - http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/231/stevenrichardsonprofile.png/ What else is there to say about this guy. He is just a goal machine. Another impressive season takes him to 54 goals in my 2yrs in charge.

David Haggerty - http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/841/davidhaggertyprofileatt.png/ What a centre half this guy has been for me. Formed a great partnership with Michael Stewart and chipped in with some vital goals.

Jack Boyle - http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/10/jackboyleprofileattribu.png/ A new signing in the summer and he proved vital chipping in with goals and assits. Some really impressive work from the winger who settled in quickly.

John Brackstone - http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/215/johnbrackstoneprofileat.png/ My first choice left back who took the step up in his stride with some impressive displays.

Season Team League League Finish Achievements
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
2010/11 Spennymoor Town Northern League Division 1 North 1st FA Vase Winners, Durham County Challenge Cup Winners, Northern League Cup Winners, FA Cup 1st Round
2011/12 Spennymoor Town Evo-Stik League First Division South 1st Northern League Presidents Cup Winners, FA Trophy 1st Round

Next Season

Having gained promotion once again it results in another step up in class. I will again say I would like a mid-table finish and anything else is a bonus. I will need to strengthen throughout though, especially in bringing in a GK, RB, RW & atleast 1 FW.

Season Preview - 2012/13

Another season, another step up in class for the boys of Spennymoor Town. The four ageing players I wanted to get rid of in the off season have all announced they will retire at the end of the 2012/13 campaign, and I took advantage of this by signing Frank Sinclair to a coaching contract. This then left the door open for a new captain to step up, and I decided the player to do this was Michael Stewart.

The chairman has once again announced that there isnt enough funds to relay the pitch, so I am once again playing on an appauling surface. It could end up working to my advantage hopefully as it has now been in this state for nearly 2yrs.

Media Prediction: 22nd

Title Odds: 6/1

Expectations: Fight bravely against relegation

Wage Budget: £2,700

Wage Bill: £2,541

Transfer Budget: £15k

Ticket Price: £11 - An increase from last season when they were £4

Season Ticket Price: £173

Season Ticket Holders: 50 - A increase from the huge 46 we had last season.

Finances: http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/545/spennymoortownboardroom.png/

Transfers: http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/402/spennymoortowntransfers.png/

Key Transfers

Louis Connor - http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/850/louisconnorprofileattri.png/ My new number 1 following my decision that Nick Colgan was not the guy for me.

John Kennedy - http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/809/johnkennedyprofileattri.png/ A £5k summer signing from AFC Liverpool and during pre-season played well in the deep-lying forward role.

Ed Palmer - http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/714/edpalmerprofileattribut.png/ Former Torquay man arrives for £5k and comes in to challenge my rock solid centre halves of Michael Stewart & David Haggerty.

Season Aims

Well according to both the papers & the chairman there isnt much hope for me this season, but with a price of 6/1 from the bookies I cant be far off surely?? I dont want to set my standards to high, but I do aim to make atleast mid-table, bring in some money through cup competitions and reaching the FA Cup proper and a nice away day to a Championship side would be a treat.

Fixtures - Northern League Chairmans Cup

Curzon Ashton 2 (Hallett 10'; McDonagh 21')

Spennymoor 0

All in all, not a bad month for the lads and an opening day win helped them settle at this level. The defeat to Workington was a little annoying, especially after conceding what turned out to be the winning goal so soon after equilizing.

The Northern League Chairmans Cup, which is a cup game for the winner of the two Evi-Stik First Division's, North and South turned out to be a dissappointing defeat. It took us until mid-way through the first half to get going and we had some good chances to get back in the game but couldnt take them. A comfortable victory in the end for Curzon.

Noticed a slight problem on my save with RTC's update. Man Utd are playing in the Premier League and 2 other leagues, 1 at L10 and another at L11 as well as the FA Cup preliminary rounds.

Hope it sorts itself out.

Spennymoor 3 (Kennedy 19'; Palmer 35'; Emms 69')

Guisley 2 (Astley 38'; Palmer OG 79')

evostikleaguepremierdiv.png

A solid month in the league with a couple of hard fought games. The defeat to Stocksbridge was appauling. We played poorly and deserved nothing, but the fightback away to Chester was a well ground out result, and following a bollocking at HT the lads played superbly after the break. We ended the month on a high with a well deserved 3-2 win at home to Guisley. The scoreline is flattering to the away side as it should have been much more.

Results - Durham Challenge Cup Qualifying Round

Coxhoe Athletic 0

Spennymoor 2 (Kenworthy 21'; Kennedy 37')

A well deserved victory at home to near neighbours Coxhoe which set up an away tie with Esh Winning.

Results - Northern League Challenge Cup 2nd Qualifying Round

Spennymoor 3 (Galer 18'; Richardson 23'; Brackstone 90)

Glapwell 2 (Molloy 39'; Lucas 49')

A hard fought win against a side who challenged me all the way for the title last season. In the end I just about shaded it, but it took a fantastic free-kick from LB Brackstone to win the tie.
