I agree with that.

Ah well, Conference football, Conference shirt, maybe that's the plan?

20 - 22m would get us (or at lest get us permission to talk to) mascherano i reckon. maybe even a little less. we've bid 16 (or some are reporting 18!) million for carrick and had it kncked back. based on what he's said over the past 12-18 months we know fergie has had mascherano watched and likes what he sees.

I really can't see why we haven't/aren't pursuing him more vigorously.

RE: Martin & the left of midfield.

I'm probably wrong but despite being mostly right sided isn't isn't he mainly used on the left where he started the other day?

Anyway he looked comfortable but it'd be interesting to know how Antwerp used him last season while he was with them, anyone know?

Didn't one of the regular reserve watchers on here saying he seemed like he wanted to play/would be effective in the centre a while back?

Like I said the other day it looked as though he could be capable of covering the more attacking positions across the midfield assuming that he doesn't go out on loan or something. I really did think he was quite promising so while this year might be considered too soon (but then with a dearth of proper left-sided options he may well get a chance) he might be in a position to play a valuable part in the squad in years to come.

Also, I said a while long while ago before I got caught up in the whole "we must sign 4-5 players" hum-drum (and subsequently pressed the reset button) that we'll probably only sign one player and a CM at that (this being before Ruud became a prominent candidate for departure) and that the left wing was the only place I could see Fergie deploying the likes of Jones (especially after reported competence out there in his NEC performances) without sending him out on loan again (for which Nick derided me). FWIW I think Richardson will start the season there ahead of the likes of Jones and JSPark until he's shown whether he's sinking or swimming.

so... given that we've sold ruud who has topped that mark quite comfortably in all bar one season with us, would that be a suitable return to justify the sale of ruud? that's in purely footballing terms, leaving all other emotion out of it. </div></BLOCKQUOTE>

Doesn't matter what any one player gets, it matters how many the team gets and what results that brings.

We scored more goals per game as a team without Ruud than with him last season. If we managed that over a whole year (where it's less skewed by quality of opposition, peaks/troughs of form etc) that would be fine. Doesn't matter how the goals are then spread out. </div></BLOCKQUOTE>

Exactly.

So long as the other players all contribute, all step up to the plate, so long as we continue to win and ensure we get a good goal margin. </div></BLOCKQUOTE>

Having said that, that all happening is a number of pretty massive if's.

OMG RONALDO PUT IN A GOOD PERFORMANCE icon_biggrin.gif

I was so wrong, is constant running at the defence, pinpoint accuracy of the crosses was a thorn in their side I can tell you.

It'd be brilliant if it wasn't f**king READING we were playing.

Where was he against Arsenal again?

The same place he'll be when we actually need a decent performance from him, in a game that matters.

Nowhere.

I seem to remember Charlton always had someone on the line with Curbs, he seemed to be pretty adament when being interviewed once that it had saved them in a lot of situations, and I'm inclined to agree.

Yeah was in Fernhurst then, funny as ****, was under the roof of the actual pub and coppers didn't have a clue tbh.

Mart went for a slash round the back of the bogs and coppers came down basically just had a quick word with him. was just watching him getting a telling off icon_biggrin.gif.

Went over to Mart afterwards and said why didn't he disguise himself with his hat and he just told me to **** off icon_biggrin.gif.

Still can't get over how cronic their support was.

seen the goals on SSN now. wtf was Gaby doing? if Paddy had any hair he'd surely be tearing it out at continually being dropped for games like yesterday where Gaby is percieved to be the better defensive option, despite Gaby clearly not being at his best and making mistakes.

not gonna get on ronaldo's back about the pen - admittedly i've seen it from just the one angle, but it looks a penalty AND a dive to me, if that makes any sense. while there was minimal/no contact, the keeper impedes him without getting the ball for me. you can see ronnie initially tries to evade this but in doing so the goalscoring chance is gone and he goes down. i don't like it, but referees are so clownshoes these days you can't rely on them to recognise fouls like that, so i'd argue he's being professional there, however much i dislike diving.

the one later on was rubbish and very pires-esque though, not defending that.

No problem with any of that, but your question was why we are looking to Solskjaer and Larrson ahead of him, which is different. He may be able to move himself up the pecking order, but he's not there yet.

Ali, you want to read your last post and have it make sense of some sort? </div></BLOCKQUOTE>

A few months back there was a discussion on OTF centering around one Gary Neville. Several posters were of the opinion that the Manchester United right-back was amongst the best in the world in his position, combining the intelligence and discipline required to play in that part of the pitch with the determination, hard-work and inspiration of a natural born winner. However, several other users (hereafter referred to as '*****') were of the rather lazy tabloid opinion that he was rubbish, and pointed to isolated incidents such as the Manchester derby in 2002 and the World Club Championship in 2000 as evidence for a limited player held in unusually high regard due to the status of the club he played for. This in turn prompted those who had originally praised Neville to invite the naysayers to suggest other players who they personally felt embodied the qualities of an effective right-back. Many names were thrown into the hat, including some of those I have mentioned above - Liverpool's Steve Finnan, Arsenal's Emmanual Eboue, for example. One user (the name of the exact individual is sadly lost to my poor memory) even went as far as to suggest that Steven Gerrard was better as a right-back, having been deployed in this capacity for England on a couple of occasions. This caused much mirth amongst the United contingent stringently defending Neville, and has since been brought up on occasions by one or other in an ironic fashion, in a bid to highlight both the stupidity of certain individuals professing to have an interest in football and equally the continued consistency of awesomness that Gary Neville attains.

Any futher questions?

I currently have no idea about mine, doesn't arrive in the post til Monday according to the email I got.

The only other really convoluted way I'd imagine is to check your bank account or your friends bank account and see if the money has come out and estimate the cost of the ticket and compare it to the prices for each area of the ground.

We simply have to be signing a winger with comments like this and Park's injury

<BLOCKQUOTE class="ip-ubbcode-quote"><div class="ip-ubbcode-quote-title">quote:</div><div class="ip-ubbcode-quote-content"> Manager Sir Alex Ferguson has backed Ryan Giggs to complete another two seasons with Manchester United - but the Welshman's days as a wing wizard are over.

Giggs will collect his ninth Premier League winners' medal after Sunday's Old Trafford encounter with West Ham before setting his sights on becoming only the fourth player in history to win the FA Cup five times in next weekend's showdown with Chelsea.

With Gary Neville almost certainly missing out, Giggs will have the honour of leading United out at Wembley. And should the Red Devils emerge triumphant, he will join Phil Neal as the most decorated player in English football of all-time with 17 major honours.

And, if Ferguson is correct, the chances are Giggs will eventually claim the record for himself, as well as reaching Sir Bobby Charlton's club-best 759 United appearances.

"Ryan can play for the next two years without question," said Ferguson.

"He has the right physique and has looked after himself, so I have no issues with any of these things.

"Quite remarkably he has retained most of his pace. Okay, he may not be absolutely greased lightening as he was as a 17-year-old but he is still quick enough and retains the great ability to beat men in tight situations."

That ability, coupled with the emergence of Cristiano Ronaldo, has allowed Giggs to spend more time causing havoc in central positions, meaning the loss of free-scoring Ruud van Nistelrooy to Real Madrid last summer had no impact on United's finishing power at all.

And, at 33, Ferguson feels Giggs will be of more use to him in future by pushing inside more often.

"It suits Ryan to be in a far more protected position," said Ferguson.

"For 15 years he has been tramping up and down that touchline. There is no player in the Premiership who has done that. They have all either died, been shoved aside or folded. But he has been amazing in terms of having the capacity to keep wanting to do it."

Ferguson also appears quite happy to let Giggs combine his United duties with his international commitments to Wales.

At times, Giggs' desire to play for his country has been questioned.

However, first under Mark Hughes and now John Toshack, who has appointed the Cardiff-born star as his captain, Giggs appears to have found a happy medium.

"John Toshack has been very accomodating and helpful in understanding Ryan's situation and age," said Ferguson.

"There is good harmony between John and Ryan. When Ryan has needed a rest he has got one.

"I have not discussed it at all with Ryan. As long as he is happy with the situation, I am happy to go along with it."

It is amazing to think that Giggs was overlooked for United's last cup final appearance in favour of Darren Fletcher.

The long-serving winger, who has made 714 appearances for the club, has no such fears for his place this time around.

Indeed, with Neville and Louis Saha almost certain to miss out, Ferguson's only real selection dilemmas concern the right-back role, where Wes Brown is favoured to edge out John O'Shea, and in attack, where the Scot's options include naming Alan Smith as an orthodox striker or pushing Wayne Rooney further forward, a move that would allow Fletcher to bolster United's midfield.

Either way, Ferguson is hoping England's top two can produce a final to remember.

"I am sure it will be competitive," said the United boss.

"Both sides will be ready for a battle. But I also hope the final represents England in the right way.

"We have been talking about the improvement in the English game, about three teams getting to the semi-final of the Champions League and how the Premiership is probably the best league in Europe.

"It is an opportunity to make people say these are the right two teams to play at the first game at Wembley. That is the way we should both be thinking." </div></BLOCKQUOTE>

Just looking back at those goals reminds me of how fb the past season was.

Would give anything to be able to go to all the matches and experience the whole thing the way it should be, with the atmosphere etc.

I know most of you look down apon people like myself who can't go to matches. icon_frown.gif
