Oliver Holt gets it spot on

<BLOCKQUOTE class="ip-ubbcode-quote"><div class="ip-ubbcode-quote-title">quote:</div><div class="ip-ubbcode-quote-content"> LACK OF SIGNINGS LEAVE UNITED ON ROAD TO NOWHERE

Oliver Holt

THERE are three reasons that might explain why Manchester United are doing an awfully good job of looking like a club that's lost the plot this summer. Either the worst fears of the fans who defected from the club when the Glazer family took over have already been realised and the club is skint. Or Sir Alex Ferguson has become preposterously complacent in his old age. Or United are stuck with a manager in the winter of his career and they just can't get the big players any more.

Whatever it is, the start of the new Premiership season is less than a month away and United have still failed to sign a single new player. Another potential target slipped away yesterday when Fernando Torres announced he preferred to stay at Atletico Madrid. And while their rivals are buying new stars, United seem intent on selling theirs. Chelsea have bought Andriy Shevchenko and Michael Ballack. Liverpool have snapped up Craig Bellamy. Arsenal have got Tomas Rosicky. United? Well, they're doing their best to flog one of the club's greatest goalscorers to whoever will pay £15million for him. The word around Old Trafford for some time has been that Ferguson thinks there is no need to buy a new forward when he rids himself of Ruud van Nistelrooy.

The theory is that he will be OK with Wayne Rooney, Louis Saha, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Alan Smith and Giuseppe Rossi. Which is fine, apart from the fact that Rooney's got a dodgy temperament, Saha's injury prone, Solskjaer's played seven league games in the past three years, Smith has never been a natural goalscorer and Rossi's not ready. There's still time for that to change, of course. United may yet launch a raid for Tottenham's Michael Carrick and Jermain Defoe among others. But unless they pull off a stunning transfer coup on the scale of taking Ronaldinho from Barcelona or Kaka from AC Milan - which they won't - it is going to be hard to shake the notion that they have lost more ground on the rest this summer.

Worryingly for everyone who loves the club, they are not even being linked with the elite players any more. No one seriously thinks Kaka or Ronaldinho would choose Old Trafford now. With Ferguson's judgment fading, they feel like a club on the slide. So their targets are players like Carrick and Villarreal's Marcos Senna, both excellent professionals, but not of the calibre associated with United in the past. United's problem is that Ferguson has failed to adapt to the fact that he can no longer bully the rest of the Premiership with his spending power. He can't compete financially for players like Ballack and Shevchenko but he's not getting the bargains, either. Why weren't United in for Bellamy, for instance? Why weren't they in for Damian Duff? Particularly when Ryan Giggs is 33 in November and United's idea of cover appears to be John O'Shea.

He hasn't picked up any bargains, either. No Kolo Toure. No Mohamed Sissoko. No players coming through any more, either. No John Terry. No Ashley Cole. United will do OK next season. They've got a great leader in Gary Neville. They've got Gabriel Heinze and Paul Scholes back after injury. And Rooney's a genius. They'll buy players before the start of the season, too. Probably resurrect the Carrick deal. But the damage has been done. United needed to get busy early this summer like chief executive David Gill promised they would. The feeling that there is something fundamentally wrong just won't go away. </div></BLOCKQUOTE>

Fergie's old quote of 'when in Italy, I look under the sauce to check it is actually pasta I'm being served' applies every bit as much to himself these days.

Not saying it didn't happen, but I'm not going to take Fergie's word for it given his increasing tendency to be economical with the truth.

Why hasn't Ruud denied it? Maybe it did happen. Maybe the guy wants to get on with his new challenge and doesn't want to get into a slanging match with people at a club he still has a lot of affection for.

I'd imagine we'll see an RvN autobiog at some point, could be an interesting read. </div></BLOCKQUOTE>that's the greatest non-answer I've ever heard icon_biggrin.gif

from how Ruud has conducted himself, he certainly would've struck out at Fergie if his assertion was not true and you know it. </div></BLOCKQUOTE>

He was singled out, no doubt about it. The fact that he was dropped for subsequent league games peed me off more. It was a bull decision and what i've come to expect from him. I've lost a whole lot of love for him (and the team) that I won't get back until he's gone.

tbf i think O'Shea's... preference... is similar to comeonpoolies. Obviously nobody belonging to the fairer sex would be attracted to him, and he's gotta get his kicks somewhere?

I mean, it's not like he ever gets kicks on the football field...

"He just knows where he is passing the ball and when to pass it. He knows the right angles and the right weight. His passing is absolutely fantastic."

"Just because you don't pound into tackles it doesn't mean you are not good at your job in terms of the positions you take up."

Another 3 points to send us 6 clear. You cant ask for more.

The two things that have come from this though is that Saha needs to be stopped from taking penalties and Heinze shouldnt be starting before Evra.

4 pens for us this season and you couldnt tell any of them apart. 1 saved, 2 keepers have got their hand to and 1 great one. I have no doubt pen #5 with be the same lazy arsed side foot into the same corner and despite what Curbs says Ronaldo should be given the job.

And Heinze fecks up and costs us a goal. Awful header and i just dont understand why Evra isnt starting these games. Paddy has been great this season and while Heinze is good i dont see what he has done to start before Evra. </div></BLOCKQUOTE>

I honestly believe that it was both Neville and Heinze at fault for the goal.

Neville obviously just going down and having the ball jump over him and Heinze, being alone with 3 opponents lurking near him he half-clears his header only to land to one of the 3 opponents.

O RLY?, short for "Oh, really?" is a popular Internet phenomenon, typically presented as an image macro featuring a Snowy Owl. The usual conversation flow starts with O RLY?, triggering a YA RLY ("Yeah, really") response, followed by a NO WAI! ("No way"). These may be used in combination with any number of other Internet slang expressions.

The phrase "O RLY?" is typically used in a sarcastic or sardonic manner, often in response to a statement that the speaker feels is blatantly obvious, or blatantly self-contradictory. Some Internet forum trolls may also reply O RLY? in response to a lengthy post (see also TLDR).
