RvN + Mikel - Carrick = 10m. I'm fairly sure incentive/appearance-based payments are always budgeted for yearly, so they're not really considered outgoings this summer.

So that's £10m of profit from transfers this summer to spend, without even going cap in hand to the brothers grimm for some funds. Bearing in mind also that another midfielder coming in would surely mean at least one more player leaving (JOS, So Fine, maybe even Fletcher, all would get a few million). </div></BLOCKQUOTE>

The Mikel and Ruud money isn't all coming in this summer either, so regardless of which bit of the Carrick money doesn't go out yet, it all comes out in the wash.

HARGREAVES ON BRINK OF MAN UTD SWITCH

Owen Hargreaves is on the brink of signing for ManYoo in a £17m deal.

The England midfielder held clandestine talks with Sir Alex Ferguson at the club's Carrington training ground on Thursday morning and the Old Trafford giants are confident that a deal can be reached this weekend with Bayern Munich, Hargreaves' current employers.

'A meeting has been scheduled between officials from the two clubs in Munich on Sunday, but it emerged last night that an agreement was imminent,' says The Times. 'That meeting may still be needed to determine the structure of the fee, but there appears little doubt that the deal will proceed, given that Hargreaves has approved the terms of the five-year contract on offer.'

Having been told of Ferguson's desire to sign him two weeks ago, Hargreaves reportedly informed the Bundesliga champions that he wished to leave after returning from a post-World Cup holiday.

'Ferguson invited Hargreaves to the club's training ground yesterday morning, where he is understood to have spoken at length about taking over the role vacated by Roy Keane's departure last November. Whether Bayern had any idea about this meeting is unclear but it has become apparent that Ferguson believes he is on the verge of completing his third signing of the summer,' reports The Guardian.

'The Bayern midfielder was pictured leaving the Lowry Hotel in Manchester with an escort from the CES security firm, a company used by United.'

A partnership of Hargreaves and Michael Carrick will represent a complete overhaul of ManYoo's central midfield but the arrivals of the England duo will occur at a considerable cost. Having spent approximately £35m on the pair, Ferguson will have spent all the contents of his summer transfer kitty, ensuring that are no funds remaining with which to acquire a replacement for Ruud van Nistelrooy.

Which kind of ****ing idiot comes out and says "No we turned down the exact type of player we have needed for the last few years, the one who would really see us challenge for major titles again"?

From the Guardian

<BLOCKQUOTE class="ip-ubbcode-quote"><div class="ip-ubbcode-quote-title">quote:</div><div class="ip-ubbcode-quote-content">Rooney out of touch and feeling the pressure

Rio Ferdinand has backed Wayne Rooney to come good, but something is bothering the youngster.

Daniel Taylor - September 28, 2006 01:10 AM

Sir Alex Ferguson is so fiercely protective of his players it came as little surprise that the Manchester United manager should adopt his most impenetrable stare when the questions resurfaced about Wayne Rooney. Ferguson's intention is to stifle rather than prolong the debate about Rooney's perplexing form but, deep down, it is inconceivable that he does not share some, if not all, the concerns about England's most talented footballer.

Everyone at United is entitled to be concerned because, by his extraordinary standards, Rooney's form has been close to wretched in four of his five games this season, the nadir being Tuesday's win against Benfica when his body language was as poor as his touch.

The scrutiny of Rooney since the 1-0 victory in Lisbon has irritated many people at Old Trafford, not least Ferguson, and Rio Ferdinand led a robust defence of his team-mate yesterday. "I don't think he's really playing badly," he said, "but he's set his standards so high people sometimes expect too much from him.

"I'm not worried about him, I don't think the rest of the team are worried and neither is Wayne, as far as I know. It's only a matter of time before he's firing on all cylinders. All that's missing is a goal because if he'd scored against, say, Reading last Saturday the onus wouldn't be on him having a bad time. Believe me, there's no need to worry.

"Wayne's always been good at coming back with an answer if there's criticism in the media. I can remember one day there was something uncomplimentary about him in the papers and he went out and had an unbelievable game, scoring one and setting up another. Some people can do that whereas others crumble under pressure."

Ferdinand presented a strong case on his colleague's behalf yet it is difficult to equate his confidence with the frequency the United players and the manager remonstrated with Rooney before his early withdrawal against Benfica.

His failure to fulfil basic duties such as tracking back and keeping possession brought admonishment not only from Ferguson but also John O'Shea and Gabriel Heinze. Another time, Rooney would not have tolerated being singled out. On this occasion, he accepted the criticisms.

Rooney, Ferdinand rightly pointed out, was playing out of position, Ferguson deploying a right-footed striker on the left of midfield, but that does not explain why a player of his culture and finesse had difficulty executing the simplest of tasks such as trapping the ball.He is far from short of natural self-belief - there is a wonderful passage in Ferdinand's autobiography about Rooney telling his team-mates he will be remembered as better than George Best - but he resorted to playing easy, sideways passes, forsaking all his penetrative instincts to beat his man or pick out the incisive through-ball.

"He was asked to play a certain position for the team and because of that he had to sacrifice a lot of his attacking game," said Ferdinand. "If someone - it doesn't matter who - has a bad touch then another player is bound to have a go at them. But that happens to everyone. It's just being highlighted here because people are looking closely at Rooney because of the way they perceive he's playing."

The issue for Ferguson is finding out what it is wrong and it a flawed argument when he blames the forward having played "only six games in six months".

Apart from that not being statistically true, the 20-year-old looked as bright as ever when United demolished Fulham 5-1 on the opening weekend. It is since his three-match suspension for being sent off in pre-season that he has become a peripheral, unhappy figure. Perhaps Rooney is simply discovering that form, as Ruud Gullit put it, is like a bird that passes by. Sometimes it just flies away and you don't know when it will return. </div></BLOCKQUOTE>

my god that was good. The style and quality of the football in that 1st 20 minutes or so was as good as I've seen in a very long time - probably since the treble winners were in their pomp. Guess it's not worth getting too excited until we're able to deliver that level of performance over a number of months - still, what with this, Liverpool and the 2nd half of the Wigan game, I think getting a little positive and giddy is probably OK.

Difficult to pick out individuals. Ronaldo looked unstoppable at times, was linking incredibly well and was tackling back and getting stuck in brilliantly - went off the ball a little as the game went on.

Rooney obviously stood out, not just for the goals. Giggs is playing as well as he's done for years and the enforced rest mind have been the best thing possible for the Ginger Prince...great tackle for the booking icon_biggrin.gif

Evra had another great game - thought he might really struggle against Davies, but handled him well, and gives us great options pushing forward - unlucky with his chance.

When they did put us under some pressure Vidic looked great again. Real 'get the job done' type defender - and works soooo well with Rio - who only put one foot wrong near the end.

Saha flitted in and out a little but his pace and clever runs (alongside the other attackers) scared the sh*t out of the Bolton defenders.

Atmosphere was good, though Bolton fans had the wind knocked out of 'em. Little bit of Munich's towards the end but the 'we'd forgotten you were here' response summed it up nicely.

1st time I've heard 'every single one of us' so far this season, so I guess SAF's been forgiven to an extent. Good run through of the old player songs in the 2nd half. Yorke, Cole, Sheringham, Butt, Coppell, Cantona, Stam, Macari, Hughes amongst others got their mention.

Fun at the end with trying to get the players to wave. Fletcher and Rooney did (probably get a bollocking from Fergie for it). Ronnie and Neville didn't.

away trip of the season so far icon14.gif So much for being happy to settle for the draw.

Henrik Larsson could stay at Manchester United until the end of the season, the player's Swedish club revealed on Monday.

Larsson, who scored on his United debut in Sunday's 2-1 FA Cup win over Aston Villa, joined from Helsingborgs initially on a short-term deal until March.

The club's chairman Sten-Inge Fredin has revealed the Scandinavians would allow Larsson to remain at United for the rest of the season if all parties are in agreement.

"It's up to Henrik," said Fredin. "If he wants to stay then we'll open that discussion with United. We will not stand in his way."

Fredin confirmed to Sky Sports News that there have not been any discussions with United as of yet.

"There have not been any discussions with United and 12 March is the date he will be back at the moment," said Fredin.

"If United want to keep him then it is up to Henrik in the first instance and then we have to sit down and see if we can find a solution with the clubs."

Despite an impressive debut, Larsson is refusing to look too far into the future.

"It is all ifs and I am just taking it one match at a time at the moment," said Larsson.

Larsson's contribution, though, has already led Sir Alex Ferguson to draw comparisons with Old Trafford great Eric Cantona.

"Henrik has always scored goals and some of them have been crucial," said Sir Alex Ferguson.

"Eric Cantona was like that here as well. Henrik could have scored two or three goals and his movement was terrific.

"The goal summed him up perfectly - there was no drawback for the shot."

Brown, Silvestre and Fletch looking different class. Dong showing a nice turn of pace and Smith involved in a few meaty challenges.

Eagles just so lethargic and looking a bit crap. I remember when he came on against Leeds and was great, i really thought he had as good a shot aas anyone at making it here but hes gone way off the boil since.

TL;DR ALERT

United lined-up with just one change to the side that were unlucky to lose the first leg (and, indeed, the side that has largely been responsible for this entire cup run), with Corry Evans slotting in at right-back, allowing Richard Eckersley to switch sides to replace the injured Tom Cleverley at left-back. Arsenal also made just the one enforced change, a crucial one too with the suspended Armand Traore - the only player in either squad with first-team experience - sitting this one out.

it was a pretty poor game for the first hour or so. we could maybe have had a penalty for handball but we didn't create anything apart from a speculative long-range effort from captain Craig Cathcart, and were rather lucky Simpson missed a couple of sitters for Arsenal and Zieler pulled off a top save just before half-time (Zieler on after starting keeper Ben Amos picked up an arm injury making a hash of what looked like a routine save early on). they picked us off a bit too easily on the counter, Corry Evans was out of position at right-back and it showed, Richie Eckersley wasn't able to get forward at all and the midfield were over-run. strange thing was we were just looking like we'd weathered the storm when they went and scored. both full-backs at fault for that one really, not sure if Zieler could have done better, i was sat down the other end and couldn't really tell.

the equaliser (on the night) came just at the right time, you got the feeling much longer and heads would have irretrievably dropped. few gooner mates are moaning that it wasn't a freekick but it definitely looked a handball to me. decent hit from Hewson, keeper's made a right mess of it though - he only spilled it a foot or so from his body but he's managed to still let Brandy and then Fagan get a bite at it and knock it in. game on. brilliant move not long after that with Hewson nearly scoring after a fine Galbraith pass, and there was a feeling when that went begging that it might not happen, with 'fans' were pouring out of the ground at that point. they missed a peach of an equaliser - reminded me a bit of that famous Carlos Alberto goal with Welbeck playing the Pele role, seemingly with all the time in the world in a crowded penalty box and with 93 minutes on the clock, just rolling the ball into Bryan's path and what a finish that was in the circumstances!

the Arsenal kids looked understandably crushed, hard to have any real sympathy though given their time-wasting late on (particularly their centre-back making out he was injured - even their keeper was embarrassed by it) and i half-expected them to crumble in extra-time, so credit to them for digging in and exploiting our by-now very attacking outlook to retake the lead - Drinkwater had pushed forward leaving a big gap on our right and our centre-backs are always susceptible to a bit of pace. good finish from Murphy, shame about the typically Arsenal celebration, but at least they weren't celebrating long. few question marks about whether Sam Hewson was offside from gooners (i thought the ball came off one of theirs personally), but he brought the ball down brilliantly on the left and had seemingly everyone convinced he was going to shoot before pulling it back to Febian Brandy who made a tricky finish look easy.

it was handy that this time, unlike after the Bryan goal, the final whistle was ten minutes away and not liable to arrest our momentum. one-way traffic, only one winner, all those clichés rang true, with the winner coming five minutes from time - Danny Galbraith worked himself a yard or two on the left to whip a wicked cross in which the keeper really had to come for. he did, but a soaring Danny Welbeck got there first and planted his header into the vacant net. it was at this point where the toys well and truly came out of the Arsenal pram - they'd already picked up a couple of bookings earlier on for poor tackles and were lucky to only pick up one or two more for a series of rash, late lunges in the last few minutes as their frustration boiled over (Wenger clearly drums it into them early down there). they did compose themselves long enough to fashion one last chance deep into injury time with the last kick of the game as United's defence switched off and let Parisio in on the right-hand side. his angled drive beat Zieler but thankfully slid by the far post, and the collective sigh of relief was soon interrupted by the final whistle, to the delight of the bulk of the 8,058 crowd.

it was the clichéd game of two halves in the sense that Arsenal were cruising for sixty minutes or so only to then spend most of the next hour under siege. Chester and Cathcart at centre-back made several crucial interventions early on when Arsenal were on top and could have put the tie out of sight. credit to Paul McGuinness for the introduction of Bryan for Evans with 25 minutes to go - the subsequent reshuffle saw Welbeck give the Arsenal centre-backs a more physical threat to worry about, gave Brandy more time and space to roam and wreak havoc with his pace, added creativity to the midfield with Fagan dropping back, and most importantly got my eventual man of the match Sam Hewson into the game in an attacking sense. all in all a fantastic cup-tie and typically thrilling United comeback, and what a reward - a two-legged final against the defending champions from the other end of the east lancs (16th April at Anfield, 19th April at OT). would be nice to see a much bigger turnout on the 19th, although hopefully without a proportionate increase in the number of ****ing airhorns.

With a decent defence we would have shown just how much better we are than Milan (Kaka aside).

Theres no reason why we cant score a couple of goals in Milan

and btw, under the circumstances, that was a great result. never expected us to win at half time.

And hopefully now people will lay off Fletcher. people have given him stick (me included) but he was brilliant tonight. as was Carrick in the 2nd half.
