Rene Meulensteen

"I talked it through with the manager, and he explained that he would be very sad to see me go because of my five years' service. He underlined that my work here would always be respected, but at the same time he wouldn't stand in the way of anybody with ambition who can better himself in his career. Then he said that if I had to go, I did so with his blessing so if there's anything I ever need he's just a phone call away. The last thing I ever wanted is to leave this fantastic club under a cloud. As I told the manager, I hate to leave United - but I love to take up this new challenge. I find it's very important that if you make a step into management, you make the right step. If it hadn't been the right career move for me then I wouldn't have done it." </div></BLOCKQUOTE>

In normal circumstances i'd agree but this is a special case. Not that i think he's going to announce a transfer to us but seeing as Torres is hailed as the child of the club and will never leave, there is a chance that a conference would be made to announce such a departure.

Ah, football eh, bloody hell icon_cool.gif

Cracking game, should and arguably could have broken the Premiership record quite frankly, Fulham were THAT bad. My new seat is quite good, slightly annoying that I'm literally right behind the Stretford End goal and bloody Van der Sar blocked my view of two of the goals and Scholes' shot off the post, and having a scouse bird next to me who spent the whole game slating Scholes and asked the immortal question "eh? what have we won two times la?" was a tad infuriating but all in all, great to be underway again, especially if we're going to be playing like that.

Possibly even more infuriating that Wayne is suspended after that icon_frown.gif

Anyway, nice to meet Marshy and Razor Eddie, decent little turnout pre-match all in all, even if poor Mart did have too much to drink icon_frown.gif

But when he was initially brought into the line-up you were still playing a back four weren't you? Pretty sure the hype all started when his big frame started marauding down the right flank for your lot. And he's been blooded internationally at right-back hasn't he since the apparent quality in depth of the centre-back ranks nationally would mean he'd be nowhere near the international setup?

I personally don't think that it detracts from the point that he somewhat understandably lacks the maturity to play effectively as part of a CB duo which is probably one of the reasons why he's been deployed as one of 3 by Pearce (I can only assume that Dunne & Distin are the ones looking after him for the most part) and at RB by England. Therefore his physical capabilities are still the main reason why he's in the side since he isn't experienced/naturally gifted enough to cope with the position of more responsibility that his physique would cause him to be naturally deployed without being chaperoned to some extent. </div></BLOCKQUOTE>

Most young CBs get blooded in at full back to start with, I seem to remember Rio playing right back for England and England U21s aswell as Sol Campbell on the other side. Sometimes a player just comes along at a young age who has the phyiscal attributes aswell as the technical ability that you know is going to be a good player, Wayne Rooney being the most obvious example.

He isn't getting praise because of his big frame and power, its his defending and ability along with his obvious strength thats getting him the praise. He's impossible to play against in the air and will win 90% off any challenge up there (yes making it not impossible). You only have to look how teams mark him from corners, theres always at least 2 players looking after him, one to challenge and one to block him off. His pace and power means he can keep up with the best of strikers, he totally had control of Henry and Walcott when Arsenal came to the COMS earlier in the season.

He has also played CB in a back 4 a fair few times, when Distin/Dunne have been out and when Distin has been played as a left back and done just as well, no one can argue our defence is one of the best around and he is a main part of that. Like I said earlier he reminds me so much of Thuram, he's just good enough to play anywhere, Thuram only ever played RB for his country and many considered him to be the best in the world a few years back despite it.

People need to remember aswell that he's 18, I think its scary how good a defender he will become, probably not for us though

Your biggest 'rivals' are in the CL final and you've had the chance to meet them there and stop them from winning the competition yet again, it just seems strange people are more bothered about going out to the likes of Dortmund and Leverkuesen, each to their own though

I'd be interested in Nick's views on whether these fans who 'aren't bothered' should be getting tickets ahead of those who are gutted icon_wink.gif

No honestly not.

The exact lines which James quoted when he took offence was:

You've signed 3 "important players" in the last 2 years (who I guessed was Carrick/Vidic/+1),

Carrick cost $32m (he did didn't he?)

You've signed a club record $110m shirt deal with AIG (again, havn't you?)

Fair enough if you hate the Glazers, but I was reponding to the bit which said those things I have mentioned above was "so lazy and annoying" - but I thought those 3 things mentioned were true?
