I might be missing something about the Rooney sending off for maliciously attempting to murder the Porto defender* last night. Loads of pundits (usually United based, but also Tony Cottee who's a clueless cn*t) have had a go at the Porto defender for rolling about on the floor and making a meal of it. Yet I didn't see anythign outrageously wrong with what he did. You see far worse play acting at least 5 times in every match, he simply landed, rolled over onto his front, then back the other way onto his back, and sat up. Unless the footage I keep seeing of it has been shortened. </div></BLOCKQUOTE>

THe bit i heard was how quickly he jumped up once the card had been shown, but i haven't seen footbage that goes that far on. Like you i think he made a bit of a meal of it, but nothing horrendous. I'm guessing that part of the incident has been hugely exagerrated because it's a portugese team. </div></BLOCKQUOTE>

Yeah, I'd agree with that. Was just funny how quick the ex pros were to crack out the "if it was a Manchester United/Premiership player you'd never see that happen." Bunch of deluded arses.

<BLOCKQUOTE class="ip-ubbcode-quote"><div class="ip-ubbcode-quote-title">quote:</div><div class="ip-ubbcode-quote-content"> I Loved The Old B***ard Fergie

"It's a great attribute that he's like he was 20 years ago" - Paul Jewell.

I can remember buying Select magazine when I was a teenager. It was the equivalent of Uncut or Q magazine these days, except less mainstream. It had an end of year poll, like most of these mags do, in 1994, whereby various heads from popular culture were asked questions on that year, one of which was 'hero of the year?'.

All the earnest music and television stars of the period spat names like Nelson Mandela or Mother Theresa from behind their Prada sunglasses. All apart some fella off 'The Living Soap' (remember that?). He put the name 'Alex Ferguson'. I couldn't have agreed with him more. I couldn't have loved a man more if he'd been my own Da, and not just because of the trophies. I loved his 'f*** you' attitude, siege mentality and his ceaseless defence of all things red. He was my hero of that year and every other year for the next decade.

This week, Alex Ferguson is everybody's hero. The papers are full of praise for him because he's been at United 20 years. I am eternally grateful for all the happiness he has brought me for the vast majority of those 20 years, but I don't love the man like I did in 1994.

How can we love him when he clearly doesn't love us? He used to, or so he led us to believe, but ultimately Fergie only loves those who are subordinate to himself. All the players at United are, otherwise they wouldn't have been there. Much was made of Keane and Fergie's mutual respect, but even Roy was subordinate (until November last year at least). Keane's not daft, and knew that their relationship was mutually beneficial, but I'm sure he also always knew who the boss was.

Arsenal fans genuinely love Wenger, and why wouldn't they? He is a great manager, but also shares their passion, and says and does the right things as far as Arsenal fans are concerned. The fact that you hate him only proves my point. Would you not love it if Fergie started getting involved in touch-line punch-ups with other managers? He used to. He stood as a lone wolf and his embittered nature fuelled his inner fire.

What were Kenny Dalglish and Roy Evans doing at his 'do' the other day? Aren't these people his arch enemies? They certainly were when he was trying to knock them "right off their f***ing perch".

Now Ferguson seems pre-occupied with his legacy and I suspect wants to be seen as an elder statesman and to be fondly remembered in the same way as Sir Matt Busby, and to a lesser and more cringeworthy extent, Bobby Robson. In order for that to occur though, he has had to lose that bitterness, and without it Fergie's inner fire is surely being dimmed.

Look at Mourinho. He is a b***ard and is hated for it. Fergie used to be a b***ard. Our b***ard. With every appearance in the winners' paddock or at some function or other he is becoming more loveable Bobby Robson than ruthless winner Mourinho.

For me, the spectre of his brown-nosing of the Glazers hovers over his entire 20-year span at United like nothing else. It probably doesn't for most, as all the tributes and retrospective articles in the papers this last week have concentrated only on the trophies he has won. There has always been more to Manchester United Football Club than that though. Sadly, most don't recognise that. Even within our own ranks.

Paul Jewell is wrong. Ferguson is not the same man he was five years ago, never mind 20 years ago. Ultimately I think that the knighthood ruined him. He became less the shop steward zealot and more the champagne socialist. It was his involvement in that most upper-class of sports, horse racing, that sparked the current malaise at our club after all. Would plain old Alex Ferguson have gotten mired with McManus and Magnier as 'Sir' Alex did?

I don't want to feel this way about Ferguson, I want to love him like I used to, but my hatred for the Glazers and all they represent is far stronger than any love I have for the man with the plan.

Ultimately, if he has chosen to side with them and against us (and his explicit criticism of those who have done most to reclaim United means he has) as befits his new, post-knighthood image of himself, then we must also take an anti-Ferguson stance by default, and that is not something I am comfortable doing.

Furthermore, anybody who subsequently manages our club during the Glazers' occupation will, by definition, automatically face the same issues. The sad fact remains that that special glowing affection generated by such a perfect alliance between terrace and dugout has become yet another casualty of the continuing dirty war engulfing Old Trafford since May 13th 2005. </div></BLOCKQUOTE>

£55 on eurostar return, going on 19th (game is 20th) and coming back on 21st and near enough £50 for a return from Manchester to London. Didn't include the accomodation (not looked yet) I would assume it would be near enough another £50 so including accomodation your'e looking at approx. £150.

Hrm.

Well if we win every game between now and then, and you lose a couple between now and then... It will be interesting icon_cool.gif

Between now and then we have the 1st leg of the CL game, but in the league we have West Ham (A), Everton (H), Newcastle (A) and Sheff Utd (H). If we get maximum points out of them it'd be a huge feat IMO.

Call me giddy, but if we have closed the gap to say 7/8 points by March 3rd, and then beat you lot. Well... Things could get messy.

Though we also have Arsenal at home at the end of March. After that it's clear sailing on paper.

giddy giddy bindipper signing out.

for me:

1) Paul Scholes - (sometimes overshadowed by more prominent team members in the past maybe because of the very quiet way he goes about things, but for me it has been impossible to ignore just how good the lad is, this season more than any. would be thrilled if he won player of the year, not sure he would though)

2) Cristiano Ronaldo - pretty self explanatory, the year he came of age as a consistent and genuine threat. hard to separate the two really but scholes edges it for me.

Most Improved so far:

1) Cristiano Ronaldo

2) Patrice Evra </div></BLOCKQUOTE>

christ, just seen the Ronaldo interview. have always despised that twat Shreeves but that's disgraceful even for him. hope Fergie and the whole team shun the odious c**t now.

definitely a penalty, happened a few metres away and it couldn't have been clearer. baffled by the controversy, had a lot of time for gareth southgate as a player but he's gone massively down in my estimations this season. that Morrison tackle at the end was a joke, suspect we'll hear nothing more of it though, unlike if it had been, say, Rooney.

Ronaldo just godly atm. Gaby was fantastic today as well, Carrick very good, Giggs qg, Vidic ace. decent performance I thought given the circumstances, far too many in the crowd extremely quick to get on the team's back, infuriating really.

villa park for the semi \O/

have to say though, for some reason i'm a bit down after that. partly because i'm disgusted that it's by no means certain that we'll get tickets for the semi due to all the 'one year season ticket' ***** who probably have been to a handful of games at most, and partly because i keep getting a horrible premonition that we're going to do a Leverkusen 2002 :/

No its a system where if you've been to 70% of the games then your chances of getting the 30% will be slimmer. It's to give the other supporters a chance to get to games therefore evens it out betweem hardcore and none hardcore fans.

I've had no luck what so every for the last 5 matches this season. Hopfully I can get the West Ham one.

My mate applies for every game with mine and his memberships (well he has been since February when I could go again) without asking, so any game is a bonus. He doesn't know if he's got one yet though which is a bit of a nightmare, cos he drives us up. So if he doesn't get one he'll be taking mine and going on his own icon_frown.gif

If i didn't live so far away I'd try the Sheff Utd games etc, but to have to take time of work, drive up there and back, spend all that money to watch a game, which to be fair, was never going to be a classic it makes it tricky.

You saying I should apply for the CL Semi final just because I didn't go up last week?

I think that's because while it could be sealed today there's a chance that it won't happen because of events at the Emirates and we might be waiting another 270 minutes or so after that until we officially get our hands on the title depending on what happens on Wednesday & next Sunday.

Until the math says that the Prem trophy is coming back to OT we can be optimistic because it’s in our hands to a large extent, but I think that’s where the hesitancy comes from. Of course when they kick off at 4pm I, like everyone else on here, will be willing Arsenal to do us a favour and that’s when the tension/elation balance will be thrown right out of whack.
