Bit of good news:

<BLOCKQUOTE class="ip-ubbcode-quote"><div class="ip-ubbcode-quote-title">quote:</div><div class="ip-ubbcode-quote-content"> United’s Champions League opponents Lille have suffered an injury blow ahead of the teams’ first-leg clash on 20 February.

Star man and top scorer Mathieu Bodmer sprained an ankle during Lille’s 0-0 draw with Nantes on Saturday, and is considered a doubt for the European tie.

"He will be rested for the next league game at Toulouse [on 10 February]," confirmed coach Claude Puel. "A further decision will be made depending on his recovery, regarding our next two important games [at home against Lyon and then United]."

The 24-year-old Frenchman was an ever-present as Lille finished second in Group H behind Milan, and is the club’s top scorer this season with eight goals. </div></BLOCKQUOTE>

The figure at the end is how many points we are potentially behind Utd if both teams take full points from fixtures, and draw in the head to head. Now obviously it's not intentional but that is ridiculously in Man Utd's favour. We only get the opportunity to put pressure on by closing the gap in an early kick off twice whereas they have the chance 6 times! one of these being a chance to open the gap up to a massive 12 points.

I took the times from the club websites but I think they may be subject to change as I can't see the Arsenal or the Bolton game being a 3pm kick off but we'll see. Grim reading if that's the case though icon_frown.gif

Just posted that in the Chelsea thread but thought it might be of interest to your lot as well.

Just found out its the 49th anniversery of the Munich air disaster, I know I baited you lads with it in the Liverpool v Mancs thread this year but I'm honestly hugely apologetic for that. Didn't mean what I said. Anyway RIP the Busby Babes and hope you lads take my apology even if its not wanted

I'm dreading the summer, not just because of the usual transfer rumours/wums etc but the whole Ronaldo thing, Gill was interviewed and said

<BLOCKQUOTE class="ip-ubbcode-quote"><div class="ip-ubbcode-quote-title">quote:</div><div class="ip-ubbcode-quote-content"> Gill said any offer would have to go to the club's owners, the Glazer family, for consideration - but is adamant it would be rejected.

"If I put it to them it would be a very short call," he explained. "If the manager says 'no sale' then they go along with it without a doubt. </div></BLOCKQUOTE>

If an offer came in for Ronaldo of say 40/45 million, they'd take it in a heartbeat.

It's probably the only way that we'll make any significant signings by selling Ronaldo, just that bit of he'd have to make the call fills me with such doubt icon_frown.gif

Something will happen over the next few months (his agent **** stirring) United will use that to create some spin about him, turns the fans against him, get themselves off the hook "no choice but to sell and we'll be buying players with the proceeds"

September 1st 2007

"Well we tried to sign a couple of players but they didnae want to accept the money we were offering, I'm more than happy with the squad that we have and we're confident that we'll challenge on all fronts this season"

Let's cross the Ronaldo bridge if and when we come to it. If he wants to go after all we have done for him this season and the way Fergie has stuck by him then he can sod off and we'll buy someone who is committed to us.

Saying that, I actually don't think he will want to, not this summer anyway, so I'm not overly concerned atm.

summary of just who is in action this week:

<BLOCKQUOTE class="ip-ubbcode-quote"><div class="ip-ubbcode-quote-title">quote:</div><div class="ip-ubbcode-quote-content">Reds get set for friendlies

No fewer than sixteen United players will be on international duty during a busy week of friendly matches.

Cristiano Ronaldo will be in North London at Arsenal's Emirates Stadium on Tuesday evening to represent Portugal in their friendly with Brazil.

Also in action on Tuesday will be Ryan Giggs, who is likely to skipper Wales in their friendly against Northern Ireland, and Ji-sung Park whose Korea side face Greece at Craven Cottage.

Wayne Rooney, Gary Neville, Rio Ferdinand and Michael Carrick have all been named in the England squad to face Spain at Old Trafford on Wednesday night. Reds' winger Kieran Richardson features in Stuart Pearce's first England U21 squad.

Patrice Evra is included in France's 22-man squad to play Argentina in Paris, but there is no room for team-mate Louis Saha. Evra could face fellow left-back Gabriel Heinze.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is named in Norway's squad for the game in Croatia, while Darren Fletcher is part of the first Scotland squad for a team get-together under new manager Alex McLeish. Nemanja Vidic joins up with the Serbia squad for their training get-together.

Only two United players will be in competitive action this week. Young midfielder Darron Gibson, currently on loan at Royal Antwerp, has been included in the Republic of Ireland's senior squad for the first time. He joins John O'Shea in the Irish party for the Euro 2008 qualifier away to San Marino.

Giuseppe Rossi, currently on loan at Parma, is selected for the Italian U21 squad to face Belgium. </div></BLOCKQUOTE> </div></BLOCKQUOTE>

hugely stupid if you think this transfer talk is anything other than hype to build ronaldos new contract, 26mill contract over 5 years is rumoured to what they want and will probably get. Keeping ronaldo far more profitable than accepting any deal for him.

he will be here for years to come np

If Ronaldo was going to leave than this summer gave all parties a good excuse for the transfer. Granted he wasnt as hot a property as he is now. Hes gone from being arguably the best youngster in europe to the best player in europe on form at least.

Still i didnt see Ronaldo leaving this summer and i dont see anything other than the kid signing his new contract and staying.

THEY'VE decided to build the supercasino next to Manchester City's stadium.

But if you really want a super-sized punt, then perhaps the red half of Manchester is where you should be speculating to accumulate ... beginning with the arrival of Jose Mourinho at Old Trafford.

Imagine it now. Sir Alex Ferguson lands the Premiership title in May, decides that, at 65, enough is enough and moves away from the coal face to the comfortable chair that awaits him upstairs.

Entirely coincidentally, Mourinho and Chelsea inevitably part company after civil war turns into the new Cold War when Roman Abramovich brings down an iron curtain between boardroom and dug-out.

So what are Mourinho's options? His pick of clubs in Italy or Spain, obviously.

But what if the man who makes Machiavelli look like a beginner in the political stakes decides he quite likes life in England?

That his wife and children are settled in this country. That he has adapted to the culture of football here. Or, more importantly, that he knows he has unfinished business in the Premiership.

Where better to prove he's no mere chequebook manager who stamps his petulant little feet the moment his Russian sugar daddy freezes the bank account.

What a magnificent stage for Mourinho to continue rubbing Abramovich's nose in it. The greatest club in the world with the self-proclaimed greatest manager, taking Manchester United to fresh heights.

And leaving everybody at Stamford Bridge in their vapour trail.

Mourinho has already made it clear he believes he'd be the hardest act in football to follow, so imagine how much more difficult it would be for the next Chelsea boss if he was living under a shadow that fell all the way from Manchester.

United would suit Mourinho's ego and love of the spotlight but would the club actually benefit? Too damn right it would. Old Trafford would have found itself the one man who was never going to be overwhelmed by Ferguson's legacy in the way so many managers shrivelled when faced with replacing Sir Matt Busby. They would have replaced one charismatic leader with another but, more than that, they would have a box office manager whose commercial appeal is obvious, who comes with a proven track record and who would have the immediate respect of players nurtured on success. Footballers gossip incessantly. They want to know how other clubs work, about the personalities involved and the strengths and weaknesses of the men in charge.

The overpowering message out of Stamford Bridge is that Mourinho is, first and foremost, a players' manager, a boss who would back the dressing room ahead of the boardroom and who, from the top of his head to the tip of his toes, is a winner.

That would impress the United squad, just as it has always impressed Ferguson. Despite a few spats, the relationship between the two men is warm - possibly forged on a shared contempt for Arsene Wenger.

In Mourinho, Ferguson sees much of himself - the forensic attention to the minutest detail, the passion, the ferocious will to win and the devotion to the cause.

The boss has made it clear he won't make the same mistake as Busby or his other great idol, Bill Shankly, by haunting Old Trafford's corridors once he retires from day-to-day management.

He'll be on hand to advise but that will be the limit of his involvement. There will be no desire to inadvertently undermine the next manager.

It sounds like an outlandish concept, I'll grant you, yet Mourinho and Ferguson in tandem is being mentioned by influential voices. And, in an age when even the Government wants us to gamble our lives away, it has to be worth a few quid of anybody's hard-earned cash.' </div></BLOCKQUOTE>
