Fergie praise for Rio

Sir Alex Ferguson has spoken in glowing terms about Rio Ferdinand's displays this season, declaring himself to be absolutely delighted with the England defender's contribution.

Manchester United's attacking prowess has been universally hailed this season but their title aspirations have been founded on a rock solid defence.

At the heart of their rearguard Ferdinand has been a model of consistency, with his blossoming partnership with Nemanja Vidic arguably the Premiership's finest.

Ferguson is one such admirer of the talented duo, reserving special praise for Ferdinand, who is set to make his 200th appearance for United against Charlton on Saturday.

"Rio has been fantastic for us this season. I've been delighted with him," Ferguson told the club's official website.

"I have only rested him for one game, against Wigan. But centre-halves can play more games. I don't think the number of matches will affect him one bit because he is a strong athlete.

"He has always had a fantastic talent, balance and his use of the ball is excellent. His technique is probably the best in the game for a defender. His concentration has improved.

"Rio and Vidic have formed a really good partnership and they can get better because they are young enough. They will be the foundation of the defence for years to come." </div></BLOCKQUOTE>

Van der Sar targets Lille game

Edwin van der Sar is aiming to return to the Manchester United side for the UEFA Champions League tie with Lille.

The veteran keeper suffered a broken nose during United's 4-0 win at Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday and was forced off late on.

He spent a night in hospital with the injury and also sat out Holland's friendly with Russia on Wednesday night.

But on his personal website, van der Sar has revealed his expectation that he should be back in physical training by the end of the week.

And the shot-stopper is also hoping to be available for first-team duty within the next fortnight, putting him in contention to feature against Lille.

United play the first leg of their last 16 Champions League encounter against the French side on 20th February.

In the interim, Tomasz Kuszczak will deputise for van der Sar, starting with Saturday's Premiership clash with Charlton Athletic.

The Poland international should also be between the posts for the FA Cup fifth round tie with Reading the following weekend. </div></BLOCKQUOTE>

This is true. I actually used this as an example of how accounting figures can sometimes appear misleading. My tutor gave it a tick and a comment noting a very good example icon_cool.gif

<BLOCKQUOTE class="ip-ubbcode-quote"><div class="ip-ubbcode-quote-title">quote:</div><div class="ip-ubbcode-quote-content"> DIC turns to United

Dubai International Capital (DIC) are considering to launch a takeover bid of Manchester United. The news comes just a week after pulling out of negotiations with Premiership side Liverpool, who instead opted to accept the offer from rival bidders George Gillett Jnr and Tom Hicks.

Dubai International Capital Investment Group, who are spearheaded through Dubai ruler and billionaire Sheikh Mohammed, are reported to be preparing plans to launch a takeover of Premiership side Manchester United. It is also reported that Mohammed's son Sheikh Hamdan, is the catalyst in the formation of the potential takeover.

The main stumbling block of this alleged takeover will likely to be in the form of American billionaire Malcolm Glazer, who is the current owner of Manchester United. Glazer, who bought the Premiership outfit for £790million, does not intend to sell, despite saddling the club with £650million worth of debt which was strongly opposed by supporters of the club. The Glazer's alleged business plan for the Premiership club has been widely criticised by supporters and financial experts, both sets claiming the business plan having huge faults in terms of servicing the debt. Glazer has also appointed several of his family members onto the club's board, which strongly suggests the Glazer family intends to stay at the club for long period of time.

However, it is assumed that the Glazers are likely to sell should DIC table a favourable offer which exceeds the club's worth.

Sheikh Mohammed, who was alleged to be "extremely angry" at Liverpool's failure to accept the bid of DIC, could see this move as a final act of revenge.' </div></BLOCKQUOTE>

<BLOCKQUOTE class="ip-ubbcode-quote"><div class="ip-ubbcode-quote-title">quote:</div><div class="ip-ubbcode-quote-content"> ********IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR LIVERPOOL FANS********

Following the recent takeover of Liverpool FC, the new owners - George Gillet and Tom Hicks - wish to reassure fans that the history and worldwide reputation of the club will not be taken for granted, and that they wish to fully recognise and honour the traditions of the club. For example, talks are ongoing with Adidas to produce a new Liverpool FC home shirt for the 2007-2008 Champions League season containing not only the 5 gold stars over the club crest, but 39 coffins underneath it in order to fully recognise all of Liverpool FC's achievements in Europe. Rumors of the shirt containing 5 black stars (one for every year English clubs were banned from Europe) and the words "It wasn't us, it was all Chelsea fans, lah" on the club crest are unfounded.

Additionally, it has been reported that the fans of Liverpool FC are concerned that relocating to a new stadium will result in a loss of the 'special' atmosphere for visitors to Anfield, for which Liverpool supporters are renowned all over Europe. The new owners would like to reassure Liverpool supporters that they will do their utomst to retain this 'special' atmosphere by allowing all supporters who are serving ASBOs or suspended sentences to sit in the tier directly above the away supporters for a reduced price - on production of a valid Giro slip. The club will also provide cups of urine - free of charge - for supporters on the first 2 rows of the upper tier. In addition to this generous package, the club will ensure that all fans are provided with at least 2 stanley knife blades (separated by a matchstick) and a brick upon exiting the stadium, where a club official will distribute detailed maps of the visiting fans' police escort route back to the city centre. Of course, the club would like to remind supporters that this exclusive package comes at a price and therefore, cuts must be made elsewhere in the budget. As a result, we are cutting the matchday police costs by ensuring that Merseyside police allow only the most dim-witted, baton-happy officers to patrol the stadium and surrounding areas on a matchday - which has always been the case at Anfield. In addition, Merseyside police have promised that supporters of Liverpool FC will be given total immunity from prosecution for football-related disorder.

I hope that this letter will dispel your fears over the recent takeover and thankyou for your continued and loyal support. </div></BLOCKQUOTE>

If DIC were to buy Utd we'd be just as fecked if reported plans for liverpool were true. They werent into getting them a new stadium and i heard they werent planning on buying any players either but just using the club to make money.

Current club owners just see pound signs when a buyer comes calling but it isnt good for English football that we are selling to people who look at the clubs as nothing more than a way to generate money for themselves. Stupid fans think everyone is an Abramovich who is going to spend hundreds of millions without wanting a return but they are wrong.

Ideally the club would be owned by the fans the same as Barcelona but thats just a pipe dream.

he would, but at best he'll only play in 7 league games (4 already, three more before he leaves on 12/3) for us so it's moot really.

DIC would probably have been better alternative to Glazer, as we wouldn't have been saddled with the debt. But now it'd probably not be a positive thing as any money they could have provided for players at the time, will now have to be used to pay off the debt ERC's. Only a few 'legit' people would have the financial clout to give us an 'Abramovich' style person, and I doubt either of those would be looking in our direction (or football's) in the near future.

Obviously as Taz says the Barcelona model is the ideal one for fans, but I doubt how successful that would work in the English system.
