While i'm sure your underwear could incapacitate the entire chelsea team, they wouldn't score, so the best they would manage would be a nil-nil draw. </div></BLOCKQUOTE>

Seeings as the rest won't give you a sensible answer mark, James posted it in the City thread. Therefore it's "that lot" from down the road.

christ... you doom merchants. icon_biggrin.gif

6/1 a pretty realistic appraisal of our chances really. win the next three games, and the league is pretty much in the bag. boro and watford hardly the sort of opposition that should stop us reaching the fa cup final. roma eminently beatable if we pull our fingers out. same with milan/bayern.

by that rationale, 6/1 not far wide of the mark at all.

Before Manchester United won the treble, was there as much discussion as there is now regarding any team's chances of winning it whenever a team was still in all three competitions in February/March?

I suppose it happened a lot less often because the CL was champions only up until the late 90's but when it did, would the idea of winning the treble be mentioned often by commentators, journalists, and players/management? It gets brought up a lot considering how unlikely it is, even when talking about other teams.

</div></BLOCKQUOTE>Dunno about the press etc as I'm obviously not In England but one of my clear memories of those last two months is the bloke at every match (home and away) with the 'now for the treble' banner with pictures of the three trophies and fe-rg-ie across all three.

He obviously thought it was going to happen

Just thinking, Smith must play the whole game tonight. Get another match under his belt.

I dont think he is ready to start for us yet but had we given him more playing time in recent games.

Anyway please god Fergie realise it should be Park and Giggs on the wings and Ronaldo up front when it comes to the next few games without strikers.

</div></BLOCKQUOTE>

I'd probably pretty much agree on the fa cup, if it weren't for the fact that we'll probably need to put out virtually a reserve side. As for the other two, how the league is in the bag when we have only 1 striker who can tick even one of the two boxes of 'fit' and 'in form' i have no idea. Two draws where we batter the opposition but fail to score and a defeat to Chelsea and that's the lead gone. Add that to how we can be confident against anyone in europe given our recent poor form in the competition in general, and away from home in particular, none of it's looking certain, let alone winning all three.

love the pessimism. fact is, united have a head of steam, the best player in the world and the fear of their opponents.

as soon as all this treble talk starts, the players start to believe it and it inevitably follows. i'll be amazed if it doesn't.

Well played Mark, that's clearly the most realistic assessment of our current situation possible.

Realism > Pessimism > Optimism

We've got more chance of the FA Cup than the league, tbf.

Simply can't believe how blase people are about the league. There's approximately a quarter of the season to go, we've effectively got a 6 point with our closest rivals away still to come. We haven't turned in a convincing performance in about a month, we're beset by injuries up front (with the exception of Rooney, who's woefully out of form), and our small squad is set to be stretched even further with our continued involvement in three competitions and additional meaningless friendlies. Our remaining league games incorporate some tough away fixtures against top half sides (not to mention a potentially crucial fight-for-your-life derby) alongside home games against recent 'bogey' teams. Meanwhile, Chelsea continue to steadily improve, with squad players stepping up to the plate and important first teamers coming back from injury ready for their easier run in.

Without coming over all Mika, they're back as marginal favourites in my eyes.

In all honesty tonight should be a good game. Just so ****ing stupid. Why the feck couldn't we wait until the end of the season?

Plus points from tonight: Smith gets some game time and hopefully as its an exhibition match we will go all out attack and prove to Ferguson that we can beat European opponents this way.

your 4 home games left should be wins. that leaves: Portsmouth, Everton, Chelsea and Man city to play away. I'm sure fergie will get your team up for the game at Man city since it's them and it's right at the end of the season.

Basically you can afford to lose to Portsmouth and Everton and Chelsea and still win the league because chelsea are hardly going to win the rest of their games.

Yes, because iirc we have a 100% PERFECT record of ensuring home wins against teams like Blackburn. Like last ye... oh.

Do I even have to mention the Sunderland game as well?

seriously, i think some of you get paid in big titted blonde wenches with interweb geek fetishes to point out our potential shortcomings at times.

what? we've conceded first in each of our last four games after a spell of 9 clean sheets in 10. That's not improving. Spurs on Sunday wasn't an improvement in performance, neither was the first halves of Porto home and away and the Cup Final.

Squad players aren't really stepping up either, it's still largely Didier and Essien. Drogba, Robben, Ballack, Shevchenko, Lampard have scored our recent goals, and OK, Kalou has a couple more recently, but it's a minority of squad players contributing.

Joe Cole and JT are the two players we'll have come back, both are massively important but Cole isn't likely to be back in time to make an impact. Mid April is a conservative estimate.

Agreed, I guess it's the whole "fate/omg it's meant to be" idea that has only been encouraged by the events of the last few weeks, and it is hard to avoid being sucked into that but things do seem to be suggesting that it is our year, and have been for a while.

But then putting all that aside and looking at the facts like you do, it's pretty clear that there is still a long way to go and a lot of potentially tricky games to negotiate before it is "in the bag."

Mon Saha returning and not taking too long to get up to speed *fingers crossed*

The thing is i think we're all realistic if we're honest about our chances in that we have as good a chance as any of the other sides of winning each competition so long as we stay in them.

However, we all have a different way of dealing with things. There the optimists, cautious and pessimists.

Nothing wrong with any of the attitudes really because off of us have different ways of dealing with how we're shaping up going into the end of the season.
