barcanick11
I worked up a ranking system based on teams' statistical performances through the group stage games. Stats that I found to correlate strongly with winning were categorized and weighted, and then compared with the rest of the World Cup field. Here is who I found to be the strongest teams thus far in the World Cup. https://nnelli.wordpress.com/2014/06/27/ranking-the-best-statistical-teams-from-the-group-stage/
PMLF
The problem with stats, etc... is that they can be misleading, as teams also play against different opponents too. Although I agree for example that Cameroon are the worst team in this WC, it's hard to believe Costa Rica should be this high.

LewisQ
lol uefa Yeah, just four of the top five, ******* all over South America's party. Terrible! No objection to that ranking of Costa Rica. They won the strongest group in the competition, and with a degree of comfort.
seanydude
How could England be above Uruguay and Italy? They both beat them ffs

bflaff
Doesn't make a lot of sense to treat stats from three matches at the World Cup as an indicator of team quality, since they were chasing points, not 'stats correlated strongly with winning.' Take the moral victory, by all means. But the points are the only thing that matter. Five Thirty Eight rolls like this for the remaining 16: Tier 1A: Brazil (partly because of home-country advantage) Tier 1B: Germany, Argentina Tier 2A: Colombia, Netherlands, France, Chile Tier 2B: Belgium, Uruguay Tier 3A: Switzerland, U.S., Mexico, Costa Rica, Nigeria Tier 3B: Algeria, Greece

Warhawk
I feel like the more interesting discussion than the one at the top is between Honduras and Cameroon in terms of who was more ****.
LewisQ
Honduras were well in the game against Ecuador. Cameroon showed nothing all tournament except the thirty minutes or so when they actually tried, against Brazil (which is deeply worrying for Brazil). barcanick11
Completely agree that stats are secondary to results, but I think they also give another perspective to team performances. England statistically performed well, but clearly did not have a good showing. These rankings are not meant to overrule any sort of "eye test". I also agree that 3 games is by no means a large enough sample to judge these teams, especially given the different opponents, game states, etc. Just provided these rankings as something to think about. Anti Spiral
England played poorly. Got poor results. Should be in the bottom 4.
JD nawrat
England above Italy and Uruguay (who both beat them), above the USA (who qualified in a very tough group and one that they could easily finished bottom of) and above Nigeria and Greece, who also qualified in groups very tough (relatively speaking - Nigeria could have easily finished with 1 point had Edin Dzeko not been a useless sack of **** in the BIH/NGA game). This graph is highly flawed, I'm afraid. Belgium being the third best team is a huge joke, too. They've been very poor and if not for the total lack of quality in their group, they may not have qualified out of it. Above Colombia ffs - Colombia arguably the best team in the competition so far. Only really Netherlands and France that are clearly ahead of Colombia based on what we've seen so far. Haha wtf are Bosnia doing so high up the graph too? This is just awful. scott MUFC
England also drew with the team who beat both Italy and Uruguay who both played their best against England and were dire in other matches, especially Italy, England could have qualified out of the majority of the other groups IMO, Greece have been complete rubbish, Spain should be lower, Belgium have been decent, not spectacular but solid in defence, Portugal are overrated and bar Ronaldo the squad is average at best, Brazil haven't shone either, looking at the graph, France and Germany yes, Mexico should be far higher, but it is nearly there in accuracy
Puevlo
The stats thankfully take into account the fact that England were robbed. At least three clear cut penalties denied plus every 50/50 decision going against them. Easily one of the top teams but the powers that be conspired against them. JD nawrat
FIFA ranking at the moment:Brazil so far have managed to drop positions...and Spain not even in the top 9. Interesting Spain have dropped so far. They've been top 2 for about 6 years haven't they? Got to imagine Uruguay will fall out of the top 10 before the end of the tournament... I also imagine Costa Rica could be in with a shout of top 10 - beating two top 10 teams (at the time of their beating), drawing with England and making the final 8 of the WC. PMLF
Yes, the ranking should change a lot, shame he didn't post the whole ranking but Costa Rica must be close to top 10, I suppose. This site has some interesting info: http://www.football-rankings.info/2014/06/fifa-ranking-july-2014-preview-and.html Brazil can end as high as 1st and as low as 17th, depending on results in this WC. Costa Rica can end between 6th and 25th. They expect England to be in 20th place once the World Cup is over.

Because they'd already won the group, so they were happy to coast along to get through the game & into the next round relatively injury free? Not letting you having England draw with Costa Rica as some kind of victory for your shambolic World Cup.
Lermon
wonder how you rank the teams in this tournament when so many teams have progressed so unconvincingly. Switzerland could have beat Argentina, Algeria could have beat Germany, Chile could have beat Brazil. Only two valid weighted victories was the Colombia, and France. Hopefully some convincing victories next round.
PMLF
Yes, it's impossible to rank them properly, you have to make an educated guess.
YOUNGSTEVE
England were woeful. All this talk of a hard group is nonsense. Three has been sides & a side playing above themselves is hardly a tough group, & even then only gained one point against a side going through the motions.. Though we keep getting told of how our youthful players are the new world future superstars. Don't hold your breathe. The only thing Sturridge was top at was falling over. Actually Nigera could have beat France, and if the ref wasn't so terrible they probably would have. No red card for Matuidi, goal disallowed that shouldn't have been. US could have beat Belgium, but still I'd put Belgium in the "won convincingly" category. Best attacking display so far in the tournament. They're not going to miss that many chances in a match again.
