dm_gers
New Signings Bring Hope To Stranraer After some big changes within the first team squad at Stranraer, there is some firm belief within Stair Park that this year the team can go all the way and gain promotion to the Second Division. Only 2 players left in the summer this year, Joe Broad and Andrew Leeson, both leaving on free transfers after their contracts had expired. This left the squad looking very poor in depth and the 9 new faces that were brought in certainly gave it the bolster that was needed. David Easton, Jim Black, Scott MacDonald, James Fowler, Allan Jenkins and Paul Chambers were all snapped up on free transfers, with Scott MacKay and Marco Palumbo being brought in from East Stirling for 20k each. The last signing was Midfielder Stuart Ross arriving from Radcliffe Boro for 14k. Most of these players didn't arrive until towards the end of the transfer window, which left us with a poor squad to start the season of with, and this reflected in our results. It all started off with our annual first round exits in the Challenge and CIS cups. We lost 3-0 to Airdrie Utd and 3-0 to Raith respectively, which did nothing to instill confidence in the side. The league campaign started off on a more brighter note with a 2-1 home win over Alloa and a great performance to go along with it. Then we slumped to a 3-0 defeat to Peterhead and a 2-0 thrashing at home by Queen Of The South. After those defeats, there was a near on month break in the league which gave us time to bring in the new faces which made an immediate impact and got us back to winning ways. First up was a superb 3-0 away win to East Fife followed by a 2-0 home win against Brechin and 2-1 away victory over Montrose. Some excellent performances there and we were unlucky to make it 4 wins in a row when we travelled down to Station Park to play Forfar. Kenny Deuchar had scored early on in the second half to give us a 2-1 lead and we were looking fairly comfortable until Forfar threw every man forward and sneaked an equaliser in injury time. Gutter. That was all from last Sunday's session which left us 3rd in the table but it is far too early on to be predicting where we will be at the end of the season, but things certainly do look brighter than usual and hopefully we can go one better than last year and get the promotion! dm_gers
Underachieving Stranraer have to settle for play-offs Stranraer went through a poor period during the winter months that seen them drop out of the title race. Peterhead continued to dominate and it looks likely they will be league champions come the end of the season. After an ok start to the season, it started going downhill due to a lack of effort from some players who should have done a lot better and the team was fast becoming a side of underachievers. The whole of December saw us go without a win; this included a 3-2 away defeat to Inverness CT in the Scottish Cup, which sent us out of that competition but that came as no great surprise. As soon as January came, the transfer window opened and it brought 2 young strikers with it from East Stirling. John Thomson and Graham West both cost 30k but the investment in them should pay off in the future, it certainly already is with West who, as of the end of Sunday’s session had 8 goals in his first 10 appearances. We only really started to get going again by the end of January by which time we were struggling to hold onto 4th spot in the league. A 4-1 away win at East Fife certainly rejuvenated the side, as the result was followed up by an excellent 5-3 win over Brechin which saw Lee Johnson come off the bench and grab a hat-trick. After this game, new signing West and Johnson started to form an excellent partnership up front and both scored in the next game, which would have gave us a 2-1 victory, had it not been for Montrose’s last minute equalizer. The rest of February saw us come away with 2 draws and a victory, which kept us within the top 4. The session ended with a 2-1 victory over Alloa, which put us 6 points ahead of Berwick who had been snapping at our heels and also gave us a bit of hope of finishing in 2nd or 3rd which we are capable of doing given the right results come our way. We should certainly hold onto a play-off position anyway and hopefully can do one better than last year by winning in the final this time around. Bell's Challenge Cup – 1st Round (eliminated by Airdrie Utd) CIS Insurance Cup – 1st Round (eliminated by Raith) Scottish Cup – 2nd Round (eliminated by Inverness CT) Scottish Third Division – 4th (currently on 41 points from 28 games)
