Manchester United Thread 2015/16

It's a possession game.

This is the thing. At first I thought it must be an instruction from van Gaal to play it safe, but as we've seen with Carrick and Schweinsteiger playing together, both are looking to make forward passes and move the ball into the attacking players. Schneiderlin has a pretty good passing range, so it's not like he isn't capable of doing that either. Just think it's poor from him really.

Neville not happy :D

Saying what we all are.

He won;t be slagging off Rooney though? Meets up with him soon with England.

He's been doing his best Rooney impression this season anyway.

He would have finished at least one of those chances today.

It's a possession game.

It's what you do with the ball that counts, next pass should be a forward pass but some managers are possession obsessed and rather play percentage football and just keep the ball at walking pace.

United have always played football at pace, personal changed but the style never changed it was always one or two touch passing give and go with pace it was constant pressure and teams eventually caved in because United had worn out the opposition.

I keep believe people saying some new signings have dissapointed after being at the club around a month, I though it was just a Liverpool thing :D. I think have to give credit to teams like Southampton, Palace and Swansea who are all improving at a quicker rate than Liverpool, United and Spurs are especially when you look at the funds those sides have.

I think if you look at the results you and ourselves have to be thankful as it could have been a lot worse.

****! :(

We were doing alright up until they made it 1-1, after that you just knew we'd go on to lose the game. :thdn:

Today was our first real proper test of the season imo, Swansea away and we've failed. Let down in two areas, ST and GK. If we had DDG in goal they wouldn't have scored the second, first goal was a good header that Romero nearly got to in fairness, can't be too harsh on him for that one I don't think. He made a huge mess of trying to stop the second goal mind, DDG would have saved that with his feet, no idea why Romero didn't try and do the same. He's had next to nothing to do so far this season but today he's cost us a goal that he should have easily saved.

Rooney simply can't be leading the line for us on a consistent basis anymore. The Spurs game where he took a touch on a pass inside 5 yards from the goal instead of shooting first time and then today where he did brilliantly to beat two players to create the chance for himself only to then take 10 minutes before even going for the shot and then getting tackled. Got to put that chance away and get us a 2-2 draw, which would have been a good result. Three chances he had today inside the box and no goals. :thdn:

LvG's 'philosophy' seems to be: Start brightly for around 20 minutes, score or don't score doesn't change what's going to happen by and large for the next 60 minutes before we end strong if we need a goal. It seems to be a case of hoping we get a goal in the first 20 minutes or get lucky with a penalty or wonder striker etc.

Big chance to go 6 points clear of Chelsea and 3 ahead of Liverpool and we've blown it. Only played four games and we're already 5 off City who are going to **** the league this season.

This is the problem. As you mention Man Utd played a certain way for 20 years, mostly at pace with wingers & more importantly 4 strikers at any time. When Ferguson went we needed a manager to carry on the same type of football. Instead Ferguson lumbered us with negative Moyes, & now Van Gael who thinks winning 1-0 with loads of possession is the way to go. It may have been in the past, in Liverpool's glory years, but those times have gone in the Premiership. Contrast us with Swansea who have had a succession of managers the last few years, but all have their teams playing a similar way, keeping continuity, & improving all the time. Spending 100 millions on players is not the answer, even if they are very good ones. You still have to play them to their strengths.

Need to get someone decent on the right hand side, Mata just isn't good enough. To be fair, most of the team aren't good enough for where we want to be.

The defense is lacking in at least 1 CB. The center of midfield are garbage, aside from Carrick, and don't move to be able to receive the ball. A failing throughout the team.

The forward options are a bit threadbare and it's sad that one of our better players is Fellani. That's not a dig at him but more the quality of the squad.

With regards to the "conservative" passing, that's definitely an instruction from LVG as a means to reduce the defending they have to do. ie. they can't score if they haven't got the ball.

But it also ties in with poor movement as mentioned above.

It doesn't surprise me that we were outplayed by Swansea. I was kind of expecting it, they created more chances and were the better team throughout. LVG needs to change his tactics, most of us knew it was ******** a long long time ago.

It's not the losing that is the main concern. It's the fact Swansea outplayed us and this will happen on a regular basis. Our style of play just doesn't create chances and is ugly to watch. Even parking the bus style of play is more attractive and creates more chances than us.

You can call the tactics out all you like. Doesn't change the fact it was the personnel that lost us the game today, not the system.

Just watched a YouTube vid of him and he doesn't look good enough. Would be better off giving Januzaj more games or playing Valencia as a right winger or even heaven forbid, Young. Might even be better off playing Wilson on the right.

Will be amazed if United don't offer you the head scouting job right away.

LVG's philosophy and style of play is never going to work. We need a brilliant manager like Klopp or Mourinho (not out of the question with the situation at Chelsea) who will play a good style and actually has a plan on how to play football.

Martial for £36m is overpaying to ludicrous levels of silliness. What next will the press come up with? Charlie Austin for £19.5m, yea ri.......oh :(

This is the flipside to the new TV deal and general overexcitment about transfer windows slamming shut and buy, buy, buy new players mentality ... big club won't be buying anyone that can make a difference for under 30m soon

Should have got Danny Ings in ... not like Liverpool are using him. Great move for a young lad, that

LVG clearly has a plan. We dominate the ball and are very organised. It's just we're missing that quality in vital positions. Keeper/striker.

Like today, we dominate ball possession but opposition team dominate the match. LVG needs to realise the aim of the game is not to win possession stats.

That plan B of Mourinho doesn't seem to be doing to well at the moment.

Yes Chelsea will be top 2 this season and that would be awful for Mourinho. LVG finishes 4th and that would be great for him. It's just a difference in standard.

Van gaal doesn't even have a plan A let alone anything else.

So which is it? He does or he doesn't?

You'd fit right in on ArsenalFanTV.

He doesn't even understand the aim of the game so how can he even have a plan?

He mentions the word "possession" all the time in interviews. He rarely mentions the word "goal". Makes you wonder if he understand what the team needs to do to win a match.
