The Eurovision Striking Contest - The Battle Begins!

Recommended Posts

I'm going to probably put up the rest of the World Cup results on Thurs evening. icon_cool.gif

So anyone else who wants to take a punt on who wins either contest has less than 24 hours to do so! icon14.gif

(I'm taking note as usual of who is posting or not, something that does get reflected in how often your player is mentioned in the news articles btw!)

World Cup 2014 2nd Round

England 0 v 2 Spain

Both Yhon Wi & Tom Collantine played for their respective nations, but it was Spain who came out on top after dominating the game. Tom Collantine may not have scored again, but with 2 assists he is a vital cog in the Spanish team.

Ghana 1 v 2 Italy

Larry De Poopinho is on the winning team for an Italian side looking good. Italy finally won with an injury time winner after having 21 shots compared to Ghana's 7 during the game.

Holland 1 v 3 Brazil - AET, 1-1 at 90 minutes

Brazil finally squeezed through this game, Rafael Sobis scoring twice in Extra Time to send the hosts into the Q-Finals.

Nigeria 1 v 0 Greece

A solitary early goal after 6 minutes was enough to see Nigeria overcome a Greek side featuring Pendros, who had the greater number of chances during the game and will feel slightly aggrieved not to have scored. Pendros looks now to be out of the running for winning the Eurovision Striking Contest 2013/14.

Japan 3 v 0 Egypt

Wow! icon_eek.gif

After winning the group featuring England & Russia, Japan now go and comfortably beat Egypt!

France 1 v 3 Portugal

In an even game, Portugal came back from a goal down after Bob McBob scored to progress. France will look back at conceding an equaliser on the stroke of halftime as possibly the turning point in the game.

Germany 0 v 0 Belgium - Germany win 4-3 on penalties

Well surprise surprise, Germany win a penalty shootout! After a highly forgettable game featuring both James Knowles & Benjas Kyriagkos, the match went to penalties. Neither player took a penalty as Germany scored 4 out of 4 and Belgium missed their 1st and 5th penalties.

Argentina 4 v 2 Peru

4 goals in the first 25 minutes saw Peru's hopes of progressing further in the competition quickly vanish. Argentina looking good!

World Cup 2014 Quarter Finals

So down to the last 8 in the World Cup and the competition is starting hot up, especially after some of the scores in this round:

Spain 4 v 1 Italy

In what should have been an epic game, defending champions Spain showed their class by dominating from the off. Tom Collantine started the rout by scoring in the 4th minute. He then got 2 assists to help Spain to a 3-0 half time lead. Spain scored again after the break, before Larry De Poopinho got a consolation goal back for the Italians but any remote chance of a comeback vanished after 66 minutes when Montolivo was sent off for the Italians.

A man of the match performance from Tom Collantine and Spain are starting to look like they could be the first nation to defend their title since Brazil in 58-62!

Brazil 0 v 0 Nigeria - Nigeria win 4-2 on penalties

Heartbreak for the hosts and Nigeria absolutely mug them of a chance in the last four! 2 shots at goal and none of target to Brazil's 17 shots at goal count for nothing as Nigeria show coolness in the penalty shootout. Nigeria scored their 5th penalty to give them an unasailable lead after Pato & Marcelo miss for Brazil.

Japan 0 v 3 Portugal

Japan can't quite keep their run going as Portugal easily move into the last four of the competition.

Germany 0 v 2 Argentina

A Carlos Tevez double sees Argentina overcome a poor German showing. James Knowles is subbed after 75 minutes and to sum up their game, Germany miss a penalty after 87 minutes which could have given them a lifeline.

So 4 teams remain, 2 European sides, but only 1 superstar in Tom Collantine. The World's top 2 nations in Spain, Portugal & Argentina are in the semis showing that this World Cup has gone according to the rankings. Nigeria, ranked 8th in the World coming into the tournament round off the last 4.

So, with Tom Collantine assured of 2 games (suspensions / injuries aside) can he leap up the leaderboard further and possibly snatch the Eurovision crown out of nowhere?!?!

World Cup Semi Final

World Cup 2014 Semi Finals

Spain 2 v 0 Nigeria

2 first half goals were enough to see the defending champions make the final again! A 20 yard screamer from Cesc Fabregas and a near post header from again MoM Tom Collantine means that the Eurovision Striking Contest isn't quite over yet!

Portugal 3 v 1 Argentina

Despite taking an early lead through Sergio Aguero, Portugal scored 3 goals to setup an interesting final against Spain.

World Cup 2014 3rd / 4th Place Playoff

Nigeria 1 v 2 Argentina

Argentina put the disappointment of losing to Portugal to one side as they dominated against the Africans. Despite taking an early lead, Nigeria could not hold on as Aguero got the equaliser on the hour mark before a winner in the last 5 minutes from Oscar Trejo.

So... the World Cup Final, the best 2 nations in the World face off in Brazil. Will it be a crackerjack of a final or a tense, nervous affair?!

World Cup 2014 Final

Spain 0 v 0 Portugal

Spain win 3-0 on penalties

Player Ratings

So the final turned out to be a slight one sided affair, with Spain dominating the game throughout and deservedly winning on penalites to reclaim the World Cup and become only the 2nd nation ever after Brazil to defend their crown.

Portugal bottled it in the penalty shootout, missing their first 3 penalties and blowing their opportunity to win their first ever World Cup.

So to summarise...:

Knockout Tree

Top Goalscorers

Top Assist Providers

Well done to Tom Collantine who dominating the assist rankings by setting up 6 in the tournament.

Top Average Ratings

Well done to Jason Healy, who came top of the Average Ratings with his 3 group game performances.

The World Cup 2014 Best Player Award

Dream Team

Well done to Tom Collantine who caps off the season not only with a World Cup winners medal, but also a place in the World Cup Dream Team and being awarded the prestiguous Best Player Award! icon_cool.gificon14.gif

Also a well done to Larry De Poopinho who made the subs bench in the World Cup Dream Team for his goalscoring exploits for Italy.

However, the big question is... who has won the Eurovision Striking Contest 2013/14?!

Congratulations to James Knowles who secured his 2nd Eurovision Striking Contest thanks to a record breaking final total of 209 points!

Jason Healy scored a magnificent 200 points to finish runners up in the contest, with Pendros of Greece capping off the podium places.

Julius Kapono who has had a decent World Cup, wins the Eurovision Second Division on player points from the star of the World Cup Tom Collantine.

This season seems to be the first one where the big nations around Europe have dominated proceedings. However, with next season involving regular games for lesser nations, the Contest opens itself up to almost everyone again.

Well done to Joo of Russia who secured the Eurovision Third Division Championship. Larry De Poopinho & Bob McBob put in a good World Cup to snatch the playoff places in the 3rd Division and get promoted.

Decent WC for Kapono, wish we had qualified through though icon_frown.gif Happy to still stay on 4th, at least I got something good to look up to. Awesome performnce by Collantine of Spain tbh, was worried he'll run away with both 2nd Divison & the competition title when I saw his performances.

Awesome updates as always WW. Can't wait to see how I fare in Premier Division icon_wink.gif

My Thoughts

Well done to James Knowles who becomes the first person to ever win the title twice and the first person to win with over 200 points in a season. Commiserations to Jason Healy who also scored 200 points.

Congratulations to Tom Collantine who has won the World Cup with Spain and has been crowned the Best Player at the World Cup.

Those playing for minor nations still have hope of glory though, as the seasons without a major championship always going to be a tighter affair. However, it does seem that as players turn 25 on July 1st, in the years of the major championships that the guys from the bigger nations will win those Contests.

I extended the Hall of Fame to the Top 20 scores as I found that the Top 10 from the season just gone would have dominated the Top 10.

However, it is interesting to note that due to a lack of games for the majority of nations, meant that even though some players got higher scores than ever before, fewer players broke the 100 point mark than the season before.

The Race to 100 Caps

These 5 players are the only ones to have 50 caps so far, although Alexei Lloyd-Hooker is on 49 caps at the moment.

2. In Der Van Dude Slovenia 31

3. Jason Healy Scotland 27

4. James Knowles Germany 26

5. Kyle Van Smith Albania 25

Magnus Donaldson remains at the top of the table, although In Der Van Dude has closed the gap from 9 goals to 7 goals. A strong season from Jason Healy & James Knowles sees them zoom up into the Top 5.

As you say, the even years are going to be tough for us minnows so I'm looking for Jason Demir to become the Crystal Palace of the Eurovision contest and come back up in the odd years. icon_biggrin.gif

Good to see I'm still in the hall of fame, though I suspect I won't be there for much longer.

Cracking updates. KUTGW icon14.gif
