No tips on the air other than being able to get the same power for much less on other laptops.

My I5 3230m haswell laptop runs FM just fine with a few leagues and large database, runs the 3d engine smoothly aswell using the I5's gpu with everthing on and detail 1 level from the highest.

Hi everyone. I'm looking for a new laptop as a 40th birthday present to myself and the only other games I play other than FM are the Total War games. Instead of buying a sports car or growing a pony tail to celebrate my Midlife Crisis i'm going to buy a laptop and somehow have convinced the missus to let me spend anywhere between £1,000 - £2,000 on it. Sadly being as old as I am my knowledge of computers is non existent so i'm hoping one of you helpful people can steer me in the right direction. If there are any decent hp laptops even better as I get a discount through work. Thanks in advance.

Personally I would stay away from HP as my expereince of them (through work) is pants. But, with the budget you have you could buy a very high spec laptop.

That looks very good and will be more than ample to play most games at a decent level. FM would run like a dream on that. With regards to the Dell, I am a bit biased have had an XPS 17 for 3 years and have had no issues at all with it. I did find that it would get quite hot when play extensive amounts of time for FM, but since upgrading to an SSD it definitely runs cooler (and alot quicker)

Was the laptop overheating and blue screening/crashing? Because high end laptops, especially when playing games will get hot. Its just the nature of a laptop.

It would run it but dont expect it to be very quick or expect to run a substantial database/leagues because that is a low end spec/processor

For £2k you could build a much better computer than that.

I suggest you find a computer supplier in your area - and not PC world or Currys or whatever, a proper computer building place.

Looking for a new laptop as screen on my old laptop has died and I'd rather just get a new one rather than try to keep this one going.

I've been looking at laptops with an Intel i3 processor but not really wanting to spend over £300. Is this even possible?

Is there an equally powerful AMD processor I could get?

What about refurbished laptops? Anybody had any experience with them? I'm really tempted by some offers that I've seen!

I only really play FM, watch a few films and go on the internet.

Honestly, you can just buy any laptop worth £1k and it should play FM very well. For example:

Depending on your needs you can pick the powerful but heavy ASUS G750, MSI GE70 - they have nice big displays, or if you need something more portable you can go with ASUS N56 (a truly beautiful laptop) or MSI GE40.

If you want to save some money you can get the MSI GE60 with i7 3630QM, that's the one I personally use and I play with a large database and most of the leagues (only a few active, but I haven't tried to push it to the limits yet). http://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/MSI_GE60_1360310.html It runs very quick and saves very quick too.

However, you might want to buy something with the new Haswell cores, they are the newer type and use less power than last year's models, but don't give a huge boost to processing speed. With that in mind, this seems like a great deal:

Haswell core, lots of video RAM and regular RAM to play with, and not too heavy either. Great deal for those who aren't too fussed about bells and whistles and just want a beast to play on. Only bad thing is that the screen is not 1080P, which is unfortunately a dealbreaker for me personally.

Under £300 is almost impossible for a laptop that can play FM at a decent speed. I always advise people to wait a while and save up for just a little longer, try for at least £500 and you'll have something that can not only play FM but also last a few years as well. It's simply not economic to spend £300 on a laptop only to have to replace it in a year or two, especially when it's going to cause you a lot of grief in the second year.

I feel that you're asking for the impossible, the issue of limited cooling properties on Laptops will get in the way of having a 'quick' all leagues save. I get away with it on my desktop thanks to liquid cooling & lots of space in the case for additional airflow cooling, I'd never attempt such a large save on a laptop.

I feel that no one really needs to have all the leagues active to have a good game, especially now that we can choose to "view only" instead.

Specs wise you should be able to play at least 5-10 countries with some on view only and some active. I'm looking to get a MacBook Pro sometime later on so am also curious about how the performance scales.

decided to put my question in this thread rather than starting a new one. I'm actually looking to buy a new desktop but dont have a massive budget (about £400 total)apart from FM theres no other heavy gaming or video editing just basic usage.

I have seen a few machines that I think will run FM14 for this cost however they nearly all have shared graphics rather than dedicated graphics cards. the machine itself has a Intel core I5-3330 processor and 8GB of RAM and it says 1700MB shared graphics. not being very technical I dont know if this will be ok or just a disappointment.

any advice on if peole think it will last or should I be looking only at machines with dedicated graphics cards?

Which 1 is better? the i5 seems to have better spec, however the Acer is an i7.

Managed to get an excellent spec after looking for the whole day.

Its a Dell Inspiron 17r Special Edition HD

Right guys, my trusty 5 year old Vaio is finally dying so I need a new laptop. I have a maximum budget of £400 and can't afford to spend any more than that. I loved the old 15" Vaio but did find it to be very heavy so I'm considering getting something smaller/lighter so I could use it while travelling more easily and have been intrigued by some budget Ultrabooks such as this:

I am aware it only has an i3 processor and the RAM isn't great but I only really play FM Classic these days due to time constraints, and even on FMC I only load a max of 3 countries.

So my question is, would the above HP Ultrabook be sufficient to run a relatively small FM game, and is it likely to become drastically outdated in the next 2 years? It may be worth noting my Vaio only has 4GB RAM and that runs my FM games fine at the moment, so I'm don't require anything that's lightning quick.

If the HP would be too slow even for me, can you recommend anything better for less than £400? Cheers guys.

It sounds like the general advice is to go for:

Acer seems to be the recommended brand

8GB RAM (4GB minimum)

Dedicated graphics card

i7 processor? Although the only £500 i7's don't have dedicated graphics cards, but the i5's do

I have £500 to spend like most people. I saw the beginning of this thread and was quite excited about the Acer Aspire 5755G:
