New Laptop/PC- Help Needed

Recommended Posts

The minimum resolution for FM14 is 1024 x 768. Netbooks will not have a good experience because their resolutions are 1024 x 600.

If you do not like how the default skin makes your game appear, you can always download a custom made one that deals better with lower resolutions.

Thanks, will say it again though, incase others are reading this - a 14" laptop and netbook are entirely different things. For example one of the 14" laptops im looking at has a max resolution of 3200x1800...........so yeah........ a tad above the minumum.

I appreciate 2 people taking the time out to respond, but think you should be careful when giving advice on a thread like this to understand the question and the answer you are giving.

Netbooks and Ultra books are entirely different things.

Look - here's the thing

Not all computers netbook or ultrabooks come with the same screen resolution.

Someone could easily buy a ultrabook and the resolution may be too low to play FM.

Whether it's a netbook or an ultrabook or a something not conceived yet in the future - FM has a minimum resolution.

Check the resolution of the device you're buying and make sure it fits the minimum specified requirements, including resolution.

Who cares if it's netbook or ultrabook - they are two different things - bu the same rule applies to both or to netbooks, ultrabooks, laptops, screens, televisions or whatever the question is.

It doesn't matter - if the screen resolution isn't high enough Fm will not work out of the box with it.

Yup. Except both you and the other poster replied with "oh netbooks arent good for FM". and also "id go for at 15" screen".

So all i am trying to do is stop others being mislead by that advice. Resolution is the correct answer, which we have now. Just dont want someone else to read it and go "oh i better not buy that amazing deal on a 14" laptop because someone said it wont look ok - if its new, then likely it will exceed the required resolution easily :)

I think you've completely taken it out of context.

Originally I quoted "netbooks" and indicated small laptops with small screens too.

Nobody is misleading anyone, you're just reading it in the wrong context.

I think I read something about FM not working that great on "netbooks" small laptops with small screens.

It might look fine - it might not - check FM min resoultion and make sure the 14 inch screen can display that resolution.

Should run fairly well but of course that is really dependent on your expectations. 3D match should run fine on low graphic settings and the game will not lag during regular activity. However, the speed of the loading time will depend on how many leagues and players you select.

The 4200U is a real clue - ultrabooks processors are slower than 4200m or just 4200 in the m stands for mobile (laptops)

It's a 64bit system with 4gb RAM - which is a no-no - 64 bit systems are better with 8gb ram or more

SSD is a good draw!

13.3 inch may not be enough for resolution for FM - check specs of computer and FM. Need a hand with this?

Overall

Not great - you can get more bang for your buck

How well should a GT645M run in a laptop with 16GB Ram, SSD Drive and an i7 processor @ 1080P Res?

I can just about get it to run smoothly on medium settings, high is a bit jumpy and very high really jumpy. All drivers up to date etc. Dropping the Res to 1280X1024 doesn't really improve it either.

Hi guys, great thread here.

I'm looking to upgrade my existing laptop, would like a gaming laptop in the region of £400-450. I really just want to see what the 3D match engine looks like running smoothly with graphics whacked up full, I've always had to play on lowest possible settings so the players are basically lego blocks running around.

I'm assuming the most important thing will be a dedicated graphics card, as mine is currently integrated. Having a quick browse I'm hoping I'll be able to get an i5 processor (or equivalent), 8g RAM and a dedicated 1g graphics card, for roughly £400-450. I'm assuming this will be able to run 3D match engine on high settings?

My first question is which website would you guys advise for buying affordable gaming laptops? I checked the big guys like Currys PC World and they barely have any gaming laptops. Sites like http://www.laptopsdirect.co.uk/ and http://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/ seem to have a better selection of gaming laptops.

Secondly I don't know much about brands, I've always used HP laptops but they don't seem to last for longer than 3 years or so and get overheating problems quickly. I know basic stuff like Alienware are top of the range and Dell should be avoided, not sure about mid-range stuff though. Lenovo, Acer and ASUS seem to be the main two I keep seeing for gaming laptops, not sure which of these to go for, or are they similar?

Any help would be appreciated. Keep up the good work!

Done some browsing and I've found 2 options which I think offer the best value for money in the £400-£500 price range.

1. This Lenovo laptop.

2. This HP laptop.

Thoughts?

I bought that HP a couple of weeks ago and it's restored my love for the game. Very smooth and very fast, I'm running English, Scottish, German and Spanish leagues and the estimated performance was at 4.5 stars so reckon it would easily handle more. Watching the games on very high quality and no stutter or slowdown.

Hi guys,

I've been hoovering up information from these threads for a while and think I've found a good deal for a new laptop: http://www.ebuyer.com/584159-asus-x550cc-laptop-x550cc-xo071h

Here is the spec:

Asus X550CC Laptop

Intel Core i5-3337U 1.8GHz

8GB RAM + 1TB HDD

15.6" LED + Webcam

NVIDIA GT 720M 2GB DDR3

Windows 8

It is a little bit more expensive than the AMD 10 machines Dench57 has found above (which look pretty good to my untrained eye). Which do people feel is a better buy? The i5 or the AMD 10 processor?

cheers

Might as well tag this on here

I am saving up for a new desktop machine - i want the best spec possible to be able to run the graphics on maximum and load a huge database with about 5 or 6 countries (with most if not all leagues from that country)

What do i need to look at having the best of?

Thanks :D

Processor and cooling

FM is still a 32 bit game - a 64 bit system won't be any benefit but is standard.

32 bit system - 4gb RAM

64 bit system - 8gb +

Get the best processor you can afford and the best cooling

Looks like the i5-3337U is a little bit better than the AMD 10 http://cpuboss.com/cpus/Intel-Core-i5-3337U-vs-AMD-A10-4655M

Then you want to look at the graphics cards

http://gpuboss.com/gpus/Radeon-HD-8570M-vs-GeForce-GT-720M

http://gpuboss.com/gpus/Radeon-HD-8670M-vs-GeForce-GT-720M

Again, your machine is a little better. However, I wouldn't pay to much attention. I mean, what is the difference in experience between a 5.8 rating and a 5.5? I wouldn't know.

The more research I have done on the U series of intel chips, the more I am convinced that they are suitable for laptop usage. They are very power efficient and almost reach the clock speed of the full i5 M series equivalent http://cpuboss.com/cpus/Intel-Core-i5-3337U-vs-Intel-Core-i5-3230M. Again, the differences are minute and I really do feel that because this is a laptop - unless you are going to have it plugged in all the time and looking for a serious desktop replacement, having a U series chip gives you a little bit less power but often much longer battery life and much better portability.

Anyway, the difference in price is probably justified in this case.

They look about the same.

CPU is a little bit better with the first one http://cpuboss.com/cpus/AMD-A10-5750M-vs-AMD-A10-4655M

But GPU is older (however looks about the same) http://gpuboss.com/gpus/Radeon-HD-8670M-vs-Radeon-HD-8570M

However, in both cases you may have to run the match engine in medium or even low settings.

The first one has less RAM, but 6GB is plenty. It is absolutely not true that you need 8GB of RAM to run FM, if you are not running much else in the background. FM tends to use less than 2GB RAM (or maybe even 1GB) from my memory. Back in the day RAM used to be a bottleneck for this game, but that is not the case anymore. 64bit processors have advantages that extend beyond RAM access, it is definitely not a waste to have 4-6GB only on a 64bit machine, especially one with dedicated graphics memory. Anyway, having a better processor does speed up the game and you can always install more RAM if it does eventually become a bottleneck (unlikely unless you have chrome open with ~30 tabs). So I would suggest the first one.

Thanks for the response. I'm a little disappointed to hear you think the Lenovo would only be able to run on medium/low settings, as I thought a 2gb dedicated Radeon 8570m would have no trouble with the 3d match engine. I didn't think it was that gfx demanding compared to other games like Battlefield or Skyrim etc. I would be willing to spend closer to £500-550 if there was a significant upgrade, but I'm struggling to find a budget gaming laptop in that price range which betters the Lenovo's specs.

I'd also probably upgrade to 8gb on the Lenovo for an extra £40, as I understand that's advisable when running a 64-bit system. So...

Processor - AMD A10 5750 - 2.4 GHz

RAM - 8 GB

Graphics - AMD Radeon HD 8570M

Graphics Memory - 2 GB

Price: £485

Can anyone find me anything better around the £500 mark? My purchasing trigger finger is getting itchy today!

That graphics card is not unsuitable for gaming, it's just that expectations have to be lowered accordingly.

http://gpuboss.com/graphics-card/Radeon-HD-8670M

As you can see, you get about 6 fps running bioshock infinite at high, and Diablo 3 goes at around 17 fps. for FM you can expect even higher fps at full detail and at a lower resolution. How much more, I am not sure. however, anything above 20 ish is probably enough for you to enjoy the game. I wouldn't definitively rule out not being able to play FM at high graphics settings - it can at least run the 3D matches and we can start with that assumption. Graphics demands for FM are not huge, but your insistence on playing it on the highest settings does make thing difficult. I would point out here though that it is actually impossible for you to play at the "highest" settings with any gaming laptop at your price range, because you'd still be playing on a non-full HD screen.

Now, I have used the Intel HD 3000 graphics to run FM 3D match engine at high quality at 1920 x 1080 resolution and that was quite laggy, but definitely not unplayable. I have not tried playing the game at a lower resolution. Since your laptop would be running at a lower resolution, I suppose it is possible to run 3D matches at high quality though I am not confident enough to guarantee that, much less for the next edition of the game coming out in three months.

***For your benefit, I disabled my graphics card so that I was running FM14 with the Intel HD4000 which is weaker than the Radeon HD 8670M (http://www.game-debate.com/gpu/index.php?gid=1497&gid2=864&compare=radeon-hd-8670m-vs-intel-hd-graphics-4000-mobile), and took the game down to a resolution of 1366 x 768 @ 60Hz. I retained the graphics settings at the highest level and was able to play at a reasonable speed. Assuming that I did this test correctly, this implies that the Radeon HD 8670M should be able to run the 3D match engine at the highest level. Again, I cannot be absolutely certain of this, but for you I would think that this is quite encouraging news.

If you are on a tight budget, you may want to reconsider spending extra money right now for the extra RAM. You were originally planning to spend £400-450, and by spending £480 you've already gone over budget. The extra RAM will boost your performance, but only if you actually use up more than 6GB. For example, I have 8GB but I'm only using half of it at the moment so I probably wouldn't notice if I actually had 6GB instead of 8GB. Though, if you think the £40 is a good deal (And I'm not sure what RAM goes for nowadays) in terms of money and labour then by all means go for it.

Hello,

I actually own the HP one, I have been watching 3D matches on FM 14 on high detail with no problems. The fan is louder than some but that doesnt bother me. The very high option is however a little too much! not sure what its like on other game titles though..

Thanks a lot for the detailed response. Those comparison websites you posted are very helpful to give an idea. My current laptop is 4 years old, has basically non-existent integrated graphics and an old i3 processor, and it runs the 3d match engine smoothly, albeit in lowest settings.

I've decided to bite the bullet and up my budget to around the £550 mark. I've done some more shopping around and have narrowed it down to 3:

1. Lenovo - £535 (including 3 year warranty)

Processor - AMD A10 5750 - 2.4 GHz

RAM - 8 GB

Graphics - AMD Radeon HD 8570M

Graphics Memory - 2 GB

2. PC Specialist Cosmos II - £550 (including 3 year warranty)

Processor - Intel Core i3-4100M 2.5GHz

RAM - 8GB RAM + 500GB HDD

Graphics - NVIDIA GTX 840M

Graphics Memory - 1 GB

3. Asus X550CC - £470 (only 1 year warranty)

Processor - Intel Core i5-3337U 1.8GHz

RAM - 8GB RAM

Graphics - NVIDIA GT 720M

Graphics memory - 2GB

Decisions, decisions! Although the Cosmos II has only a 1gb gfx card, according to the gpuboss comparison the GTX 840m would still be significantly better than the AMD Radeon 8570 on the Lenovo. It won't seem to give me a score for the processors, I would assume the Intel i3 is marginally worse because it's dual core, and I understood the AMD10 quad-core to be closer to the Intel i5's. I also understand that AMD's are generally considered better processors for gaming.

I'm not too sure about the Asus, it almost too good to be true for that price, though only a 1 year warranty is a shame.

Was going to create a new thread but thankfully found this one in the search box. I am not tech savvy and desperately need a new laptop to be able to play the latest version of FM and of course FM15 when it comes out later this year. Any help would be appreciated. Anyway, I've been looking on Littlewoods as I want to pay in weekly installments rather than up front and I was wondering whether this laptop would be good enough:

http://www.littlewoods.com/asus-x550ld-intelreg-coretrade-i7-processor-8gb-ram-1tb-hard-drive-wi-fi-156-inch-laptop-and-optional-microsoft-office-365-personal-grey/1405024534.prd?amendCommerceItemId=ci16783003198

Or perhaps this one:

Just want something that will run the game fast and well, I usually play the top two divisions in England and Scotland and the top flights of Germany, Italy and Spain, thanks!

It's a processing game - so it's going to need a good computer processing unit (CPU)

The hint in there letter at the end of the number "i5 4200U"

The "U" stands for "Ultra-Low Power" and as of which with these models the processor isn't as fast.

The i7 would be better than an i5 (in most cases) and look for the letters

M (mobile) MX (mobile extreme) or MQ (Quad Core Mobile) beside the numbers.

This would be quite nice

It's a decent site that one and I'm poking around on there myself looking at their 13" Optimus with a few tweaks.

If I were you, and had a budget around £800 which is what that linked one is going for, I'd look at their other options.

Unless you really need a 17" screen, look at the 15" ones. The money you save on screen can be better spent on a processor superior to an i3, which is pretty average these days.

You can modify their 15" Cosmos II to have a dual core i7 and 16GB RAM for £770, as an example.

I'm no expert, but if the main purpose of the laptop is to run FM rather than graphics intensive games, my understanding is that your focus should be on getting the best processor you can within your budget.

I'm planning to build a new PC for work, but I would also like to use it to play FM.

I have the following build in mind: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/23P3NG

(I might downgrade a bit to lower the costs, this was originally meant to be a gaming PC, as well.)

At least which VGA should I add to ensure that FM14 and the next installment will run smoothly? I was thinking about adding a 2GB VGA.

Looking for a thin and light laptop for FM 14/15. Any suggestions? No bigger than 15" screen, main use will be FM, Sky Go and some light photoshop work. Budget around £500.

Depends what your idea of "thin and light" is - If you are talking Ultrabook style, afraid you will likely struggle to get one for 500 quid which will give you good FM performance. You might just about get something with the processor and RAM to run it well, but a thin/light laptop with dedicated graphics (which you really need for decent 3D performance) is a struggle for under that prices. Depending on your situation, you might need to go with not quite as light and thin as you would like to get yourself some dedicated graphics.

Hello all I am looking for a new laptop, I found one with a great processor. But what about this graphicscard: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 870M

Yup thats a pretty good graphics card. Will do you very well i would think

That build would be perfectly fine for FM, although I would recommend at least a 2GB dedicated graphics card (not sure your build has integrated, it says it depends on the CPU).

Thats a pretty nice spec. Should run FM like a dream. I have a similar spec (same processor and RAM, very similar graphics card - one model up) and it runs very high detail on 3d smoothly, and processing time is quick on my current save which has about 18 leagues running.

For 800 quid thats a pretty good deal. The only thing it misses is an SSD but thats not the end of the world.
