New Laptop/PC- Help Needed

Recommended Posts

Eugene- do you think this laptop would run FM (say half a dozen leagues or so, nothing OTT) at a decent speed? And would the 3D match engine run ok? TIA.

http://www.dabs.com/products/asus-zenbook-intel-core-i7-5550-6gb-128gb-ssd-13-3--windows-8-1-B2BS.html

Edit- or would I be better off with this one? Not too bothered about portability etc as it'll be mostly used as a desktop replacement.

Yes I would be interested in the 2nd one... http://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/9S7-16GD11-1408-MSI-CX61-2PF-1408UK_1699913.html - wonder would it play FM15 well?

Either is fine, whatever you prefer.

Would this run FM decent enough?

Processor: AMD A8-6410 2,0Ghz quad-core

RAM: 8 GB DDR3

GPU: AMD Radeon HD8570M 2GB

Capacity: 500GB

It would be ok - not a terribly fast processor but it would do the job.

Is saveonlaptops a reliable website to order from? Heard mixed reviews about it. What's the quality like?

Yes lots of people here buy from there.

Thank you Eugene, would this laptop be better?

Processor: Intel® Core™ i5-4210U 1.7 GHz dual-core

RAM: 8GB DDR3

Capacity: 500GB HDD

GPU: AMD Radeon™ R5-M230

Forgot to mention that FM is the only game I play (on laptop) and I do this on 2D mode.

Other question:

Since I only play on 2D, should and Intel HD 5500 Graphics card do the the job for me?

Hi i am looking to buy a laptop pretty much just to play football manager. I want to get a really cheap one which will be able to play it at a decent speed, any suggestions? I know this is really cheap but would it do the job? http://www.pcworld.co.uk/gbuk/laptops-netbooks/laptops/laptops/toshiba-satellite-c50-b-14d-15-6-laptop-black-10011201-pdt.html#cat-0

It would be fine. But you're at the lower end of the processor speed for the i5 4210 - I'd recommend concentrating on a faster processor.

No it would not do the job.

What's you real budget?

My range would be a maximum of £500 but would like to spend alot less and as little as possible as it will only be to play football manager

Don't know if this link works

http://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/Products/cat/Laptops/refine/max~500$46563~67690$46562~144409$46562~144410

Any of those.

What's the H processor like Eugene? I have seen a I5 4200H but don't see many of them.

It's a fast processor, 2.8ghz and in some cases can go to 3.4ghz.

"H" just refers to the fact that's dual core processor with Iris Pro graphics.

I bought the 17" Apache Pro a couple of months back http://www.msi.com/product/nb/GE70-2PE-Apache-Pro.html#hero-overview and I have to say I am well chuffed with it, MSI laptops(although I could be being biased here)have a fantastic lineup to choose from.

Hi daylight - how does the Apache Pro run FM? Like a beast I assume?

I am looking into upgrading my laptop and can purchase MSI computers through a work Computer Purchasing Scheme and the GE20 2PL Apache / Apache Pro are the two I'm considering....

Is it possible to buy a laptop for FM15 that can play the match engine at the lowest level for under £300?

I'm sure it is possible. Would it be an enjoyable playing experience? No.

Pretty good if you ask me. Is it worth the £500 asking price? Probably not, there's probably a lot of mark up in there for profit. But it's a good computer and if you can find a better one for similar price then go for it.

Nobody could know how many leagues, it's an ambiguous question.

But it's a rock solid computer and you'll have no problems playing happily with a good few leauges and nice sized database.

Unfortunately the i74510u wouldn't be as fast as the i3 4130.

But it would run the 4 leagues you require with no hassle at all.

do you think that little desktop can run fm2015 lighting fast with its ssd and gpu and a so-so I7 4150u? http://www.asus.com/ROG_Console_PC/ROG_GR8/

It's a slow processor, the game won't process fast.

SSDs are good for increasing your boot up time and for loading and saving games, but it will have a marginal affect on processor performance.

Don't suppose anyone knows of an i7 laptop I can buy for 300 quid ?

You don't need an i7 laptop.

See case above in this thread, OP has an i3 processor and asking if the i7 is faster, and it's not.

You're not going to do well with £300. See if this link works http://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/Products/cat/Laptops/refine/max~300$46562~144411

Google each processor model and see which one is fastest.

Is http://www.cpubenchmark.net/ a good site to get processor speeds from. I honestly thought i7 Processors were faster than i5's.....according to this site its not the case.

So hard to figure out which Laptop will be the best.

Was looking at this one at first http://www.dell.com/uk/p/inspiron-17-5749-laptop/pd?oc=cn74909&model_id=inspiron-17-5749-laptop

but i noticed its not as fast as i would believe.

Yes, not all i7s are better than i5s, or not all i5s are better than i3s etc.

The one in your link is fine. It's 2.4ghz which is ok and can reach higher speeds, but don't count on it.

Football manager is a processing game, it needs a fast processor. Google the processor number and you'll find out all about it - concentrate on the base frequency speed, and ignore the turbo speeds.

Get the fastest you can afford.

RAM - for a 64 bit system, stay at 8gb or more, don't go lower.

I had a budget of £400 and wasn't sure I'd be able to get anything particularly good. I wanted to get either Dell, HP or Lenovo based on past experience, and also wanted Intel rather than AMD processor.

I went for this in the end:

http://www.pcworld.co.uk/gbuk/laptops-netbooks/laptops/laptops/lenovo-g70-17-3-laptop-black-10105268-pdt.html?gclid=CjwKEAjw6Z2pBRCmvaXq6d7FjUoSJAAc5LriIurceGUwGHOQAoLC56Y8fb7i0gGk41JEn_yRcaXe6hoCdoXw_wcB&srcid=198&cmpid=ppc~gg~%28LTC%29+1011+WINDOWS+LAPTOPS+%26+CONVERTABLES~10105268+-+G70+Lenovo~Exact&mctag=gg_goog_7904&s_kwcid=AL!3391!3!63992537660!p!!g!!g70&ef_id=VRaP2QAABJh4zOWs:20150410190445:s#cat-0

It "only" has an i3-4005U processor and 4GB RAM, but also has a 1TB HDD (with a clever 8GB SSD built in for the OS), and a nice big 17.3" screen.

I then ordered another 4GB of RAM from Crucial, for the princely sum of £25.19 including free delivery.

£405 has bought me a laptop with a big screen (important for me both for FM and for more serious stuff), and you know what, it runs FM nice and quick for me; it even manages a good stab at the 3D match view - low detail but silky smooth.

I think what I'm trying to say is that everyone has different priorities and expectations for how they want/expect FM to run. I'm running 4 countries' full league structures and its rattling along at great pace.

Ouch Eugene a bit brutal, I aint bothered that it is 2nd hand and has a few scratches, the processor, ram and hard drive makes it worth it to me, just want it to play FM, got my other laptop as my entertainment system but thank you for your input.

It looks like it's a i7 2xxx which means it's 2nd generation which means it is probably as old as back in 2011, which is pretty old for a laptop.

That Processor looks pretty slow tbh.

Yes it's a tad slow.

Why do you say that ?

Because it is slow.

It's not intended to put you off - it's just to advise you what's good and what's not based on our own opinions.

Here's some to consider, considering you can get extra RAM for free

It's a i5 3230m - Dual Core 2.6ghz with turbo boost - launched early 2013

http://www.laptopsdirect.co.uk/Refurbished_A1_Acer_TravelMate_P253_Core_i5-3230M_4GB_500GB_15.6_DVDSM_Win_A1-NX.V7VEK.011/version.asp

It's an i3-4300m - Dual Core 2.4ghz - no turboboost - launched late 2013

http://www.laptopsdirect.co.uk/A1_Fujitsu_Lifebook_E554_Core_i3-4000M_2.4GHz_4GB_500GB_DVDRW_15.6_INCH_HD__A1-VFYE5540M13A1GB/version.asp

It's an i7-3537U - Dual Core - 2ghz - turboost - launched early 2013

http://www.laptopsdirect.co.uk/Refurbished_Grade_A1_Asus_X550CA_Core_i7_4GB_500GB_15.6_inch_Windows_8_Lapt_a1-X550CA-XX101H/version.asp

This is my favourite for a different reason - six cores @2ghz

http://www.laptopsdirect.co.uk/Refurbished_Grade_A1_15-P170NA_I3-4030U-8GB-1TB_TS_SILVER_a1-K3H22EA/version.asp

It's not bad - but it's not the fastest processor but it has 6 cores (as opposed to 2 or 4) and FM will use as many cores are as available.

I'm a bit up in the air about that one.

If I were you I'd go for the i5 3230m

Good luck

Probably worth clarifying what you expect to get out of the laptop.

What will be the primary use for the laptop?

Is FM the only game you'll play on it?

Do you prefer 2D or 3D match view?

If 3D are graphic & animation quality important to you?

Realistically how many nations & leagues would you like to run?

I'm really disappointed with save on laptops at the moment.

This is good (You'll need to check out if the graphics card works with the games you want)

http://www.laptopsdirect.co.uk/HP_ENVY_15-j151sa_-_AMD_A10_8GB_1TB_15.6_inch_Windows_8.1_Laptop_J2E80EA/version.asp

Slightly better (no graphics card don't expect amazing graphics)

http://www.laptopsdirect.co.uk/Fujitsu_Lifebook_A544_Core_i5_4210M_3_MB_Cache_4GB_DDR3-1600_RAM_500_GB_SAT_VFYA5440M25A1GB/version.asp

This is pretty awesome (again no graphics card but on board graphics are good enough for FM)

http://www.laptopsdirect.co.uk/Fujitsu_Lifebook_A544_Core_i5-4210M_2.6GHz_4GB_128GB_SSD_DVDRW_15.6_INCH_HD_VFYA5440M2511GB/version.asp

If I was you - the 1st option would be good if the graphics card works out.

Otherwise I'd go with option 3.

Sounds good. Although it only has 4 cores, but has 8 threads, it can be up to 8 cores with hyperthreading.

I have the GeForce 540m in my other laptop and it's pretty good. But you may want to toggle the GPU assisted in the preferences to see which gives better performance.

Hi all, I bought a Toshiba Satellite series laptop 4 years ago with an i3 processor and 3GB RAM.

I'm looking to replace this in the next couple of weeks, but I have one question to anyone who has a Toshiba laptop of recent vintage: how quiet is it?

Let me explain - my Toshiba is NOISY. I mean "Heathrow flightpath" noisy. I mean "getting sent out of the room so the wife can hear Coronation Street noisy". And not just while playing FM (although it's probably at its worst then), but also during general web browsing.

So, before I consider a Toshiba again (which has, apart from that issue, been a fantastic laptop), does anyone else have a similar experience?

IVe had an old Toshiba granted it was a 6 yo laptop and was louder than most but not constant. I would say open her up (not the wife) and check the fans for dirt/dust build up this is common on laptops to get clogged up with dust causing the fans to go nuts!

I really like the build quality of the Toshiba I had, I have an HP now which I do love but even that can be noisy sometimes!

looking to buy a surface pro at the moment. How well does the game work with touch controls? Is the windows version of FMC fully touch compatible?

It will work on Surface Pro, but don't expect anything amazing, as the game is not designed to be touch screen optimised, and last I heard, they have no plans to.

But you can plug a mouse into the Surface Pro so it should be ok.
