New Laptop/PC- Help Needed

I'd like to buy a new laptop to play FM16 after being out of the game for a few years! Having read through the last few pages of this thread you seem to be the man in the know - I wonder if you could advise me. I'm not very tech savvy at all.

My situation seems to be similar to the poster above to whom you recommended the HP Probook:

I also would prefer not to exceed £400 if possible. I just want a laptop that can run FM16 quickly and smoothly without over exerting the computer. I like the 2D dots rather than the 3D matches when playing, and I don't play any other games. I would only use the laptop for very basic web browsing, MS office etc. otherwise.

So, good at running FM16 easily and not much else is my requirement! Would the HP Probook be your recommendation for this also?

As you've used my original post as a starting point and seem to be after the same sort of things as me I thought I'd quickly respond. I have a few responses in mind regarding that laptop but I'll leave that to Smurf or someone else a lot more knowledgeable than me.

I have ordered the HP Probook that Smurf recommended to me, and it'll hopefully be arriving tomorrow, so I can log back in on here and let you know how it serves me if that is of any help at all.

My laptop decided it had enough FM for this lifetime, so now I'm searching for a new one. Budget is around €400, may go a little higher if it's worth it.

My old laptop played one league with a large database on half a star, so it can only get better from there. Ideally I'm looking for around 8-10 leagues playable quickly. I want to try to actually stick to a single career for a while, so want a decent player range and a game that can progress quickly.

As for other info, I will only really use it for uni stuff and searching the web.

Is this all possible?

For extra points, what are the odds of getting something for around my budget that will play Cities: Skylines decently too?

I've been looking for a laptop which will be able to cope with a setup of approximately 17-20 leagues from 12-14 nations, and a large database. This usually gives me around 48k player count. I just wondered whether people thought this laptop would cope with that workload and if anyone who has owned a hp laptop could share their experiences. Update, just found that a 13 inch Macbook Air is $999 on Apple's website. I will probably go for this but they give you the options to upgrade a few things and I have no idea which is best.

Option 1) Upgrade from 4GB RAM to 8GB RAM for $100

Option 2) Upgrade from 1.6GHz Dual-Core Intel Core i5, Turbo Boost up to 2.7GHz to 2.2GHz Dual-Core Intel Core i7, Turbo Boost up to 3.2GHz for $150

Just to note that the game is not supported on Tablet like devices - so it's a crapshoot if it works or not.

It's likely not to be the RAM - more likely the processor in the Tablet-like device.

You can also specify this with hardware of your choice; you can make it cheaper, or more expensive. Configuring it with a i5 6300HQ for example will make it £686. Still with a slightly better graphics card though.

Just FYI; I have a i7 6700HQ and 8 GB RAM (2 x 4GB DDR4), and I can play with all leagues in the game playable, with 160k+ players in the database at the start of my save, and I think it runs fine.

I will be moving around a bit in the next months so I need my first laptop. Obviously I need it to run FM16 as smoothly as possible but my budget is limited (300-400€). Right then, laptop has sadly packed in. It was a stunning i7 with dedicated graphics card - so I really hope the below system I intend on buying (need cheap!!) will be able to handle FM.

First and foremost I just need a decently speedy machine. On the face of it the below is that, I just want to know if I will be able to run FM to a decent enough standard. I usually go with 5 or 6 countries, large database and what may stand me in good stead is I never play in 3D. Always a 2D person.

That looks like an okay deal, Shauny, the CPU is decent considering it's price, but.......

Not one for heavier FPS-type games and not flexible in terms of upgrading it. It's got a very weak PSU, so my guess is it will struggle to handle a graphics card, if the box can even fit one or the motherboard supports it. There is a suspicious lack of info there. There's no monitor, but I guess you have one already?

As you say, (to my knowledge) the CPU is not bad. I have saw articles comparing it well/close/even slightly better to the 4th Gen i7 which my laptop had, and if I can replicate that in desktop form, I am pretty happy.

Aside from FM I run absolutely nothing demanding. Spotify, browsing, word processing and excel for work purposes but aside from that nothing. I will barely take a chunk into the HD either.

Any laptop (or tablet) that meets the minimum requirements - and that runs on a "full" Windows or Apple OS - will be able to run FM. You can find the minimum reguirements easily in this forum or on the official websites. The minimum specs will make you able to run a very few leagues and a minimal database: Get too ambitious here, and the time it takes for the game to progress will suffer. It will start to feel unacceptibly slow very quickly. The better the processor is, the more leagues and the larger database you will be able to play without feeling that the game progresses too slow. RAM: 2 GB is minimum, 4 GB is better, 6 or 8 and you have pretty much maxed the amount of RAM that FM will ever need, but obviously you may want to run Windows + other programs simultaneously as well, so I'd say 6 to 8 GB RAM is optimal. FM will use multiple processor cores if it can, so obviously 4 cores in your processor will be nice. With a eg Intel Core i7 processor you will have 8 of them; 4 physical cores + 4 logical cores ... this is called HyperThreading. FM will make use of that too.

A SSD drive instead of a regular old-fashioned (spin-disk) hard drive will make your FM load and save faster, and in general help the processor to be as fast as it can be, without the drive holding it back too much when any read or write operation to or from the drive occurs.

The 3D graphics in FM are not very demanding of your hardware at all, so you don't need a costly graphics processor, but a decent midrange card will be ok.

In short; get enough RAM, and then the fastest processor you can get within your budget. The rest is secondary.

Depends what you mean by "compromised", doesn't it. It will be very much slower to progress in the game than if you played with just 1 league and a minimal database, of course.

I have a i7 6700HQ, which is roughly comparable to a 4710 or 4720HQ, and 8 GB of DDR4 RAM. And a SSD. I play with all leagues as playable, and about 180k players in the database at present - and for me, the speed of the progress of the game is fine. But I can understand if someone of a more impatient persuasion will think it is too slow. How it feels with 300k players, I couldn't say - never tried it.

This with FM 15, but I can't imagine it makes any difference.

Ya FM would be the only game I'd be playing as I've got a console to play other games. I'd like to be able to watch key highlights in 3D but it's not essential. I'd like it to run fairly smooth.

How well will it run? 3D graphics aren't that important to me.

Alright lads, i'm looking for a laptop purely just for FM. I'm after one that will process fast, but mainly that'll will last long, and continue to run FM year after year (as my old laptop only lasted 3years). I usually play with only 1 nation and 5 leagues on a large database. I play in 3D, but not overly fussed on the graphics. My budget is roughly £500, but willing to spend abit more if it's going to make a huge difference.

Amount of a leagues/clubs. Around 8 to 10 leagues

Are 3d graphics important? Maybe but having a quicker machine is more important

What other tasks do you do when playing FM? . Not much

Is game speed essential? Yes

Fast load and save times? Not really

Screen size important? no but want at least 15

Does it need to be portable (light) or do you want it as a desktop replacement (heavier and not ideal for carrying around but ok for situated in your house a various locations (bedroom, sitting room etc.) - Not really it more or less live in one place

Something like this - it has integrated graphcis - so I would only play this on a low detail for 3d matches.

The graphics card inside the cpu would work around the same as an entry level graphics card like the Nvidea 820m - which would be fine for fm on low detail 3d matches.
