Gee_Simpson
I'm guessing for optimum performance a high end desktop will always be better than a high end laptop right? I'm looking at desktops with the 8700k in it but I can't find any under £1000. That's probably overkill for mostly FM. I currently have a Dell XPS 8500 which has an Intel i7 3770, it's around 6 years old. I bought that at the time just for FM too so you could say that it was overkill back then as well. My budget would be £1000 for a Desktop or Laptop, I could go higher if needed. It will mostly be for home use. Dunno if I'm better off just getting the MSI Laptop posted on here, the one at £849 https://www.laptopsdirect.co.uk/msi-gl73-8rd-core-i7-8750h-8gb-1tb-128gb-ssd-geforce-gtx-150ti-17.3-inch-9s7-17c612-043/version.asp?refsource=LDadwords&refsource=ldadwords&mkwid=sOwnqMp1L_dm&pcrid=293734120249&product=9S7-17C612-043&pgrid=58524942203&ptaid=pla-467630036067&gclid=CjwKCAiA0ajgBRA4EiwA9gFOR0r9q6ttSt6PxKoTNf-t9HQSI85-3BibmPIRJPFoq-VKkuVD6Ay_SRoCooIQAvD_BwE I'm looking to buy one that will last me a good 5-6 years like my current desktop has, so maybe overkill is necessary for that? I actually haven't played FM since FM17 and that ran fine on my PC. Maybe I won't need to upgrade at all. I'll have to check and see how it handles FM19 with around a 100k database. Still, your recommendation would be welcome Edited December 8, 2018 by Gee_Simpson

I reckon I'll just go for a desktop again then. That looks a good build, I'll definitely consider it. I'm also considering building my own but not sure how hard/easy it is? Is PC Part Picker the best site to use for building one? If the price difference isn't much for near identical builds then I would rather it just get put together for me by one of those sites that do custom builds. PC Specialist are custom built, you're paying a bit more but you do have it custom built by an expert. There's a few, parts picker, scan.co.uk, overclockers, etc. Nothing wrong with the laptop you picked for FM either.

mayney
Hello, I'm looking at getting a tablet or small compact laptop/notebook to run full version of FM19. I've read on previous posts that the surface pro will run it ok. Is there anything of similar size that will run the game well?? For my job I have to fly alot which is why I'm after something compact. I normally only use the English leagues and run a medium size database. 3d match engine is a must. My price range would be £700 and under. Any help would be massively appreciated as I'm not great with computer specs etc. This would purely be used for football manager and nothing else. Thanks alot Edited December 10, 2018 by mayney

zlatanera
Bit of a stupid, only half-relevant question here but didn't seem worth making a new thread for. Pending a trip to the Apple Store, I may no longer have a fully functioning Mac. I bought all my FMs online, either through Steam directly or in the case of FM19 I bought a steam key online. If I switch to Windows do I simply have to redone load Steam, or do I need to buy the game again?

Gee_Simpson
Okay so I have decided that for the first time I will go down the route of building my own PC, although I'm not sure if I will go for it now or wait another year or so as I've been testing out some database sizes on my current PC which is 6 years old but it still seems to run the game ok. It has a i7 3770(non k) CPU with 8GB RAM so it's still decent although not cutting edge anymore. It cost me around £650 at the time and that was mainly for FM. The thing is, the build I'm looking at would cost almost £1300 which is double the cost, and it's also mainly for FM. Of course I would use it for other things like internet browsing, iTunes, YouTube etc but nothing major and no other games as I do most of my gaming on console. So I would need a good excuse to do it Has anyone else on here spent anything near that amount for mainly just FM? I tried loading all leagues on my current setup and unfortunately it was just a tad too slow. Not far off being acceptable for me but just missing the mark. I reckon a new processor (especially one I'm going to overclock this time) and far superior RAM will be enough to do it. Do you play any other games on your Laptop or is it just FM? mazza bul
Hi Smurf, I am looking to buy a laptop basically just for FM and tiny bits of work stuff. I want one with the best graphics capability possible for £700 for the 3D match. Ignore my ignorance here please but all the skins that are made seem to always be made for 1920x1080 resolution. Is this screen size? Basically I want a laptop that will work with that resolution/size. I have looked at the information on different graphics cards etc on this forum but it goes way over my head. Just a recommendation on a solid machine available from usual UK outlets would be amazing. Thanks as always
moujik36
Hi all. finally upgrading to new laptop after nearly 7 years. use my laptop for FM and general music/web browsing/streaming etc. Budget circa £800 but i can be tempted to stretch if really worth it/advisable. on fm, i'm not that fussed by 3d, so would be a bonus if possible but i wont cry if i cant do it decently. i like running 9-10 leagues and as large a database as i can. key for me would be to buy something that should serve me for at least 4/5 years, although i appreciate that's hard to predict. i've seen this https://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/9S7-16J962-2073-MSI-GL62M-7RDX-2073UK_2418012.html what do we think? can i do better? thanks in advance. That's really not a bad pick for a laptop, to be honest. The only ones I can find that have better processors than that one tend to only have 8GB RAM, and are about £100 more expensive. https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07F32Y8G9/ref=psdc_429886031_t2_B07F94CFKV - better processor, same graphics, less RAM https://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/9S7-179BC3-814-MSI-GP72MVR-7RFX(Leopard-Pro)-814UK_2263509.html - better processor, better graphics, less RAM Overall, yea, I'd probably go with what you picked. You can upgrade RAM but you can't upgrade the processor. 8gb is fine for fm and you can upgrade to faster ram and to 16gb ram in the future at relatively low cost. Upgrading RAM doesn't break the warranty on the device either, however, if you were to try upgrade the processor it would likely void the warranty - and changing the processor in a laptop can be tricky. 1 hour ago, iopzzzza said: Hello guys. In terms of single-core processing ability (which is most important for FM), there isn't much difference at all between this one and the one Smurf posted, and the one Smurf posted had a slightly better graphics card too, and graphics cards are difficult to upgrade in a laptop too. If you're mostly going for FM, but want to play some other, more graphically intensive games too, I'd probably still go with the one Smurf posted, and spend the difference in money on getting an extra 8GB RAM to add into it. That's true, so where the single-core performance are almost identical, I'll plump for the one with more overall power and newer generation, plus the additional better graphics card all for the same price as the other one, seems like a better deal to me. Adding more RAM at a later stage would be recommeneded. If you're doing that, make sure you get the exact same type of ram and exact same speed of RAM. You will find this info in the eBrochure that usually comes with computers these days, or by checking your serial number online with the vendor. RexEverything
hey @Smurf this is unrelated to FM but I don't know anyone else I could ask for advice! My Wife's laptops has died, just as she's started her big essay for her Masters Degree - is there a laptop you'd recommend just for Word Processing & internet browsing, under a budget of £300? Very unlikely to be used for gaming, might be used for netflix or something similar. thanks!
