New Laptop/PC Advice -Please Read the Opening Post

Recommended Posts

Its the way FM is set up data wise at the start. If its not set-up then regardless of how far you progress the position stands the same.

There have been Premier league clubs without U23 sides irl in the past.

My suggestion would be to suggest a feature enhancement that allows a club starting without an U23 side to request the set-up of one when reaching a specific level, say Premiership perhaps as a boardroom request

Thank you for the recommendation. The specs of that laptop look good. In my limited knowledge, I'm going to ask two silly questions.

1. Does it matter that the hard drive is 5400rpm? I'm sure I've seen some in the 7000s which I'd assume is better?

2. Are desktops better than laptops when it comes to getting high specs cheaper? A 17 inch laptop isn't very portable which I don't care about, but I guess it raises the question - do I even need a laptop? Are desktops and laptops the same when it comes to specs vs price?

1.  If saving your game to the Hard Drive it may just take a tiny bit longer than saving it to the SSD. You've got a SSD with 256gb which should be plenty for the operating system, which will give you fast boot up times, and overall computer performance. And you install the game on the HD of the 5400 RPM, which has limited impact on the performance - and you can save your game file to the SSD. However, it wouldn't be any harm installing the game on the SSD at all. As you should have plenty of space.

You may run out of space on the SSD - so I would recommend setting your files to download to the 5400rpm drive, and you can backup photos, files etc to this drive and use the SSD as your main drive.

If I was you, I'd put the game on the SSD and save the 1 game file to this location also. Then if you start a new game, backup game files to the other hard drive.

Yes you can get spin speeds of 7000+rpm or even 10000rpm - but the difference is minimal in my opinion. Yes, faster is better.

If it bothered you - you could always swap out the slower 5400RPM drive for a 2nd SSD drive, you can do this yourself quite easily, a lot of the time it does not void the warranty - but you would need to check that. If you are worried about voiding the warranty of the ability to do this yourself then a local computer store could copy the files and install the new disk for you.

It's not that expensive.

2. Desktops are more flexible, the parts are easily swapped out (except sometimes the processor as sometimes they are embedded in the motherboards. But upgrading RAM, drives and graphics cards is relatively easy. It's something I think everyone should be able to do. You could always take a basic computer course in this to get your confidence up, but it's quite simple really.

Desktops are cheaper - which makes them very attractive, and easily upgradeable, which is another great thing.

But you do have to usually purchase a monitor separately, however, reasonably good monitors are cheap enough these days.  Unless you buy an All-in-one - but then you lose the easy ability to upgrade the components in some cases as not all-in-ones are easy to upgrade. It's like a hybrid between laptop and desktop.

If you wanted a kickass desktop - then this is absolutely a steal - but keep in mind you need to buy a monitor on top it.

It does not come with a Graphics Card - but you could save and add it in later on - and it does not have a Wireless connection (you'd need to plug directly into your internet router).
https://www.box.co.uk/Cube-Fusion-Quiet_2500097.html?config=2336001,2343948,2423823,2464098,2478370,2499247

That desktop kicks the laptops ass in so many ways - but it's not ideal as it is not sporting a graphics card.

It would run FM just fine but require the graphics on a lower setting. But if you're only playing with 2d setting or commentary only it would be fine.

If we head back down to reality. We can take a look at desktops with the same specs as the laptop (if not better).

This has a great graphics card - and a decent processor
https://www.box.co.uk/Cube-Gauntlet_2477545.html?config=2335985,2427199,2464097,2472017,2478369,2482818

This has a slightly (very slightly) lesser graphics card - but has a decent processor also - the price is great as it allows room for a Monitor!
https://www.box.co.uk/Cube-Type-Sparrow_2567923.html?config=2335882,2335908,2464097,2473247

This is a very processor and same graphics card as above. The processor is good for FM.
https://www.box.co.uk/Box-Gaming-PC_2232977.html?config=2344682,2472019,2473247

If you want to hit your budget - great processor (same graphics as above)
https://www.box.co.uk/Cube-Type-Falcon-V3_2424478.html?config=2335908,2423835,2464098,2473247

Again - excellent processor - and top end graphics card
https://www.box.co.uk/Box-Extreme-Gaming-PC_2385803.html

Again - very good processor - and top end graphics card (slightly less than above)
https://www.box.co.uk/MSI-Trident-3-8RC-093UK-Compact-Gaming-P_2409451.html

Again - heading down the list in processors and graphics card availability
https://www.box.co.uk/Lenovo-Legion-C530-Cube-Gaming-PC_2347491.html

Now - if I had a budget of £1,200 - this is what I would go for (no monitor)

If I was concentrating on graphics and perhaps playing other games - but still a good processor
https://www.box.co.uk/Cube-Type-Sparrow_2567923.html?config=2335883,2335908,2464098,2473247

If I wanted FM only - best experience with processor (important for FM) graphics least important (add graphics card later)
https://www.box.co.uk/Cube-Type-Falcon-V3_2424478.html?config=2335908,2423823,2453603,2464098

There's also this (think I linked to it already)
https://www.box.co.uk/Cube-Type-Hawk-v3_2446741.html?config=2303268,2335908,2464098,2482818

This also looks like a great option

In response to the first paragraph: FM is a different game to most other games. So selecting priorities based on performance for FM vs Call of Duty the performance criteria's would be completely different in terms of the 3 main ingredients, Processor, Graphics, and RAM.

There is no magic formula. There are computers that are priced at £1000 and in one case it would be perfect for FM and another case it would be perfect for Call of Duty. But one wouldn't be fit for the other.

For a laptop in your price range.

Just FYI, I think the laptop you linked to is cheaper on Amazon

https://www.amazon.co.uk/ASUS-FX705GM-EV101T-Bezel-Gaming-Laptop/dp/B07HH5XR8K

Although in one of the reviews, it says: You have to plug it into the wall to use it unless you don't mind the CPU being restricted to 1GHz across all threads

They're talking non-sense. You have different performance methods for the battery when not plugged in, depends on your preferences.

Good find by the way.

I never mind for anyone to buy from Save On Laptop, I just find it the easiest to navigate. It's only a guideline - and to find something similar for cheaper if you can.

Nice find.

Not too bad. Medion in my opinion are not great. Everything a bit plastically. But that was years and years ago.

What is the actual budget?

This in your range?

I was thinking around £550-£600 so yeah I could stretch to that once payday comes around!

Would you say that the best on the market mate?

Hey all,

I've had my old laptop forever and need a new system but I'll be going desktop this time. I will be using it for general office stuff and just real basic nonsense but I also am wanting to spend more to ensure I am able to play with a juicy database in FM. Lol.

Obviously the price varies on these but is going for the more expensive one going to provide a much bigger boost on the amount of nations and leagues I could run or is it likely to be negligible?

I would love to play with a 10-15 nation database but I've been stuck on 3-4 for a few years now due to my crap laptop.

Either of the last 2.

No graphics card - so would have to play 3d on low setting if playing.

Thank you, I usually prefer the 2D classic anyway but it's good to know it'd be possible to go 3D if necessary. Is one better than the other at all? If not I'll just save the 50 bucks.

I'd go for the last one, as it's a generation newer.

Looking at getting a new laptop, ideally budget around £250-£500. I've been looking on Ebay/Amazon for refurbished so happy to have a refurbished laptop

I usually load the following as playable leagues. England (Prem - League 2), France (Ligue 1), Spain (Top 2 divisions) Germany (Bundesliga-Bundesliga 2), Italy (Serie A-B), Holland (Eredivisie), Portugal (Top division)

I also go large database and then on the advanced section, from what i remember, i add top division players from top clubs from Argentina/Brazil/Norway/Croatia/Denmark.

I dont watch the games on 3D, More than happy with 2D Classic.

I actually play as Margate - started after they were promoted into VS - and they already had an under 23s side when I took over that was active in the under 23s league - so I don’t think low level would be the problem - maybe it’s a board decision?

I don't think Dulwich have an U23 team IRL, but that's a little bit besides the point. Not having U23s in the Vanarama South is fine and realistic, but at least when promoted to the Premier league the situation should change.

That's where you're wrong, buddy. Logic does not apply to those who program this game. If you're not an average player and you don't notice play long enough this game to notice things, then this game is unplayable to you.

May be, but there seems to be no way to influence that decision. Now starting second season in Prem (finished 7th in the first season, just missing out on Europa League as relegated Newcastle managed to win the Carabao cup), and still no U23 league team. Doesn't look like I'm going to get one.

So I'm after a new laptop mainly for FM and maybe a bit of other light gaming. Got a budget of up to £800 but don't want to go blow too much on a laptop I could get cheaper elsewhere. Anybody got any recommendations? Any deals on or anything anywhere at the moment?

Thanks in advance.

If money is no object, and given they all have the same processor, I'd go with one with the most up-to-date graphics card, which would be this one: https://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/computing/laptops/laptops/msi-stealth-gs75-17-3-intel-core-i7-rtx-2070-gaming-laptop-512-gb-ssd-10189920-pdt.html

Otherwise, any of them would likely run FM as fast as each other, because processor is the most important part for FM, and they all use the same i7-8750H processor.

Any help appreciated please.

I've seen these two below and been keeping an eye for any deals. I have currently got a Sony Vaio I7 3612 running at 2.1ghz, 8gb Ram, windows 10 and 2gb Radeon graphics. Has lasted me the best part of 7 years and I think its time for an upgrade. I play mostly FM and have just started streaming also, play other games such as Flight sim, Euro truck sim, GTA etc.. I'm also considering a desktop if there is something equivalent or better for the price.

This is 900 and cheaper and a bit better than the others as it has 16gb RAM

https://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/FX504GM-EN366T-ASUS-FX504GM-EN366T_2400280.html

Battery life (when not plugged in) is 3-4 hours, reduced when under load like FM does, so expect 2-4 hours when not plugged in - if that's an issue... then check out the battery life on the others before committing.

If I had to pick from yours - I'd go with the one on Currys.

However, based on the first one from AO - this is the same and cheaper - https://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/3ZV36EAABU-HP-OMEN-15-dc0003na_2354461.html

Hey Smurf

I'm planning to buy a laptop. I play FM19 on 2D anyways so I don't really need it to be something special, so the budget is really low.

I would just like to ask a simple question, which one of these is better?

this one:
HP ProBook
processor: i5-3340M 2.7GHz
RAM: 8GB
graphics: 1024MB ATI AMD RADEON HD 7570M (I think it has 2 graphic cards as well)

or this one:
HP Pavilion DV7
processor: i5 M460 4x2.53-2.80GHz
RAM: 6GB
graphics: it has both INTEL HD 1GB and AMD Radeon 5650 1GB

They are both like 150€. I like the second more because it has a little bit larger display, is there really much of a difference between them when it comes to specifications, what do you think?

No guarantees.

Ok so I'll admit I'm an old duffer doesn't know a lot about computers.  My Macbook is 6/7 years old now and struggles especially as I like to tab between FM and Internet (Firefox).  I tend to have a few tabs open, often including Youtube.

Anyway, it's getting very slow now just playing the game, without the other distractions, so I'm looking at getting a new laptop.  I like the Mac but I know that I could buy something equally good (FM-wise) for half the money.  What am I looking at in the £750 range that'll be good for FM (my only real game), t'internet and the occasional bit of writing?

Also (told you I'm dense), I'm assuming that I would have to buy FM19 again if I moved from Mac to Windows?

No You don't have to buy again.  Login to your steam account and install the game on any computer

You can only be logged into your steam account on one computer at atime.

This would be fine

Hi,

I am looking to buy a laptop to get back into FM and I am not tech savvy what so ever so don't have a clue where to start.  I used to play about 5 years ago and would normally just run 2 or 3 leagues, and play 2D.  I have found and also been recommended (thanks Jordan) a couple of laptops and wondered if you could point me in the right direction please.  Looking to spend no more than £600 if possible (the one recommended is slightly higher but also out of stock currently).

If these are no good is there any other site worth visiting or any you can point out? If #5 is the best is it worth hanging on to see if that comes back in stock at the same price?

I won't be using the laptop for much more other than the odd word / excel document and maybe the internet for help with FM, but won't be using it for netflix or streaming films or anything.

I am hoping for the laptop to last me a good couple of years / games before needing to upgrade again, should I get my love for FM back!!

Thanks
Mark

No You don't have to buy again.  Login to your steam account and install the game on any computer

You can only be logged into your steam account on one computer at atime.

This would be fine

Hello, I’ve been saying to myself on and off for the last few years I want to get a new computer/laptop to play FM.

I like to play with a lot of leagues added, so want something that can play these with no trouble, when I play on my current laptop it gets rather warm.

I wouldn’t normally go down this route but I’ve been looking at getting a MacBook Air rather than a Windows laptop.

My first question would be, what are MacBooks like with FM? I’ve been using Microsoft Windows for as long as I can remember so want to see if it would be a good purchase long term.

My second question would be, which would you recommend to be the best MacBook for playing FM on?

Many thanks in advance for any answers.

Nothing wrong with MacBook Air or MacBooks in general for playing FM. They are good machines.

There's no difference really in a Mac and a Windows computer, they both run the same.

Macs are heavily overpriced for what is under the hood. If you spent the same amount on a Windows computer it would come in severely under the price of the Mac.

If I took the best MacBook Air and select my options it comes to about £1284.

Keep in mind that this MacBook Air (or any have no graphics card! So playing 3D matches may limit you in the detail level for 3D matches.

VS Windows

If I put together a 14inch laptop on PC Specialist - it comes in around £750 with similar specs to the Mac

Or this one https://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/9S7-14B121-221-MSI-PS42-8RB-221UK_2408589.html which comes in at £917.

The one linked above has a graphics card and would be fine for FM.

Even with a better graphics card
https://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/UX480FD-E1044T-Asus-ZenBook-Pro-14-UX480FD-E1044T_2409636.html it's £1259.99

Buying a windows computer, spend is a tiny bit more - but you have your graphics card built in!

To be honest, it's very difficult to get hi spec 13/14 inch laptops without paying big bucks for them.

Let's examine the MacBook themselves:

On first examination the MacBOOK comes in under spec  - so I'll skip it.

Macbook pro

Macbook Pro comes in 2 flavours - 13 inch and 15 inch.

We've covered 13 inch above. However, a MacBook Pro with the minimum for FM would cost approx £1449.

Jump to the 15 inch macbook pro
The minimum spend here is £2349

Compared a Windows machine

On PC Specialist I can put that 15 inch macbook pro specs and it comes up with £1552

If you went 17 Inch you get this:

Chassis & Display
Octane Series: 17.3" Matte 4K LED 60Hz 72% NTSC Widescreen (3840x2160) (No G-Sync)
Processor (CPU) top of the range
Intel® Core™ i9 Eight Core Processor i9-9900K (3.6GHz) 16MB Cache
Memory (RAM)
16GB Corsair 2400MHz SODIMM DDR4 (2 x 8GB)
Graphics Card - top of the range!
NVIDIA® GeForce® RTX 2080 - 8.0GB GDDR6 Video RAM - DirectX® 12.1

1st M.2 SSD Drive more storage!
512GB ADATA SX6000 Pro PCIe M.2 2280 (2100 MB/R, 1500 MB/W)
Price: £2,506.00 including VAT and Delivery

Unique URL to re-configure: https://www.pcspecialist.ie/saved-configurations/octanevi-17/FZCukfFN3t/

It's a little bit more expensive - however, I maxed out the entire specs, better graphics, better processor - larger screen!

If you want a really good computer for FM and not spend a massive amount of money then

This would nail it https://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/FX504GM-EN366T-ASUS-FX504GM-EN366T_2400280.html

Or this https://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/5WA67EAABU-HP-Pavilion-Gaming-15-cx0018na_2453614.html

Hope that clears things up!

Hello,

long term fan of FM and I need a PC that will suit my needs. I generally play on 2D classic, but wouldn’t mind playing on 3D. I like to run a large database and at least 20 leagues, the more leagues the better. The PC needs to be fully upgradeable and also needs to be able to run The Sims on ultra graphics for my partner. My budget is £2000 to £4000.

I want to know which of these two is best for my needs:

2)

hopefully somebody can point me in the right direction.

Hi, I have a budget of £400 and I’m hoping I’ll be able to play FM2019 on that budget if it’s possible. I have seen a few laptops and I’m wondering if it will run ok on them or if anybody has any recommendations.

Those laptops are over the minimum requirements, but not by much, so they should run the game, but it won't be particularly quick at all (the processing ability for a single core on each of those laptops [FM relies more on single processor core power than the power of all the cores] is about 70% the performance of the i5-8300H processor, which is one we tend to recommend as a more budget level, high performance FM processor. Also take into account that the performance may be worse than that, as each of the laptops you linked aren't designed for games, and the processors in them are designed to reduce their processing power when they get warm, and FM makes processors get quite warm after a while.

The minimum I'd really be happy going for a laptop that'll run FM decently, and won't need replacing in the next 12-24 months, would probably be approx. £600-650, since then you can get a processor that'll run FM well, and a dedicated graphics card so it'll run smoother in matches (such as this one).

This is better

In the processor it's better.

Graphics card similar enough, but slightly better.
