Stuniverse
Game date: Saturday 14th March 2020 Pre-match v Dumbarton (a) - Ladbrokes League 1 (29) Match Preview Team Selection Unavailable: Louis Longridge (knee) Doubtful: Jahmal Hector-Ingram (hamstring-90) Stuniverse: No changes to the starting 11, but we welcome Jahmal Hector-Ingram back on the bench after his hamstring injury. Our medical team have passed Jahmal fit to play but, with David McMillan also on the bench, we'll only use Jahmal in an emergency today. Post-match: Dumbarton (0) 0-3 (2) Falkirk BairnsNews: A 15th straight league win and yet another clean sheet. Stuniverse: Yes. Another excellent performance. Two goals from Declan McManus and a Conor Sammon penalty saw us win, but let's not forget the rest of the team who contributed magnificently. BairnsNews: Raith drew at East Fife so your lead is 16 points with seven matches to go. By my calculations, two wins puts you in the Championship. You're as good as promoted, aren't you? Stuniverse: We can't think like that. We're not there yet. The job's not done yet. We have to remain professional, work hard, and hopefully we'll get the reward my players deserve soon enough. Stuniverse
Game date: Tuesday 7th March 2020 Pre-match v Clyde (a) - Ladbrokes League 1 (30) Match Preview Team Selection Unavailable: Louis Longridge (knee) Doubtful: Jahmal Hector-Ingram (hamstring-90) Stuniverse: No changes to the starting 11 or the subs bench. Post-match: Clyde (0) 0-2 (1) Falkirk BairnsNews: Another good win. Stuniverse: I thought tonight was a bit low-key for us, but a first-half goal from Charlie Telfer, plus a Conor Sammon penalty in the last minute, secured the three points for us. One setback, Declan McManus went off with a tight hamstring but we're hopeful he'll be ok for the Cup Final on Saturday. BairnsNews: You are now one win away from the Championship and you could be promoted on Saturday if Raith lose at Stranraer. Stuniverse: I expect Raith will win that one but it would be amazing if after the Tunnock's Caramel Wafer Challenge Cup Final against Dundee we found out we'd been promoted. Stuniverse
Game date: Saturday 21st March 2020 Pre-match v Dundee (N) - Tunnock's Caramel Wafer Challenge Cup Final Match Preview BairnsNews: How does it feel to be in a Cup Final in your first season as a football manager? Stuniverse: It's an incredible feeling but I won't let that get in the way of doing my job. My players have been awesome all season and they deserve to be lifting the Tunnock's Caramel Wafer Challenge Cup Final Trophy later today. They've worked incredibly hard this season, but all that hard work counts for nothing if we don't win the football game. McDiarmid Park is sold out and we want Ye Bairns fan to be celebrating when the final whistle blows. BairnsNews: It's top of the Championship Dundee against top of League 1 Falkirk, yet the bookies have you as slight favourites. Stuniverse: I know. It's bonkers, isn't it? I think it shows how successful we've been in the league and, especially, the cups this season but, seriously, Dundee should be playing Premiership football next season. I'd say we're the underdogs but, having said that, we've prepared thoroughly and we're confident of winning the Challenge Cup. Team Selection Doubtful: Louis Longridge (knee-75) Jahmal Hector-Ingram (hamstring-90) Declan McManus (hamstring-90) BairnsNews: What's your team news today? Stuniverse: No changes to the starting 11, but Louis Longridge (knee) returns to the bench for Mark Durnan. Post-match: Dundee (0) 0-0 (0) FalkirkFalkirk win 4-2 on penalties, after extra-time BairnsNews: Congratulations on winning the Challenge Cup. Stuniverse: Thank you. It was a tough game, very hard fought, and the first-half was very even. I thought we had the better of it after the break and the longer it went on, the stronger I thought we got. Louis Longridge hit the post in the first-period of extra-time. In the end, it came down to penalties, Conor Sammon scored, Jahmal Hector-Ingram hit the post, Charlie Telfer and Michael Tidser scored, Robbie Mutch pulled off two excellent saves, and then Efe Ambrose smashed home the winning penalty. I'm thrilled for my players. They've worked so hard this season and they thoroughly deserve their cup winners medals. I'm so proud of my players. And I'm delighted that we were able to win the Challenge Cup for our fantastic fans. BairnsNews: It looked like you may have picked up a couple of injuries. Stuniverse: Knocks, really. Aidan Connolly has a tight calf, Michael Doyle has a tight groin, they should both be back in a few days. BairnsNews: Raith kept their slim title hopes alive with a 2-0 victory at Stranraer. Stuniverse: Actually, that might be for the best. It gives us the opportunity to win the league title and clinch promotion against East Fife in front of our own fans at Falkirk Stadium next week. Stuniverse
Game date: Saturday 28th March 2020 Pre-match v East Fife (H) - Ladbrokes League 1 (31) Match Preview BairnsNews: A win today against East Fife and you'll clinch promotion as league champions. Does the fact that 3rd placed East Fife can secure a playoff place with a win make it a tougher game than it otherwise would've been? Stuniverse: No, I don't think so. East Fife are a good team, with good players, and it was always going to be a difficult game for us. The fact that we both have something significant riding on the result doesn't change that. Team Selection Doubtful: Mark Durnan (calf-90) Aidan Connolly (calf-90) Michael Doyle (thigh-90) Jahmal Hector-Ingram (hamstring-90) Declan McManus (hamstring-90) BairnsNews: How are the walking wounded? Stuniverse: Well, our medical team have passed everybody fit to play, but we're wrapping some of them up in cotton wool. There's just the one change with Louis Longridge coming in for Charlie Telfer. Post-match: Falkirk (3) 4-3 (1) East Fife BairnsNews: Congratulations on winning the League One title. To clinch it with five matches remaining is a fantastic achievement. Stuniverse: Thank you. East Fife made it very difficult for us. Declan McManus and Aidan Connolly got us off to a great start, before East Fife made it 2-1. Louis Longridge made it 3-1 shortly after. In the second-half Conor Sammon headed us into a 4-1 lead. But credit East Fife, they kept coming at us and scored twice more and at 4-3 we were holding on at the end. It's such an amazing feeling though and I'm so proud of my players, they've worked incredibly hard this season and they deserve all the accolades that will come their way. Now they'll be playing Championship football next season and, after our cup exploits this season, I think they'll do very well. BairnsNews: Connolly and Macdonald limped off. How are they? Stuniverse: Aidan Connolly has a knee injury and Calum Macdonald an ankle. They'll both be out for a few weeks so we may not risk playing them again this season. I’m excited about next season because the way we’ve performed against Championship and Premiership teams in the cups, I think we have the players to be challenging at the top of the Championship. I have to admit the campaign has gone far better than I expected, particularly after an uninspiring start to the season where we struggled to get shots on target. I didn’t particularly rate the two wide-men Aidan Connolly and Louis Longridge In pre-season so was going with narrow formations with the width only coming from the full-backs, but then injuries forced my hand and I reluctantly went 4-4-2 with Connolly and Longridge in the wide roles and that’s when things started to take off and our incredible run kicked-in. That plus the form of Robbie Mutch in goal once #1 (no longer #1) Cammy Bell got injured, plus the signing of Efe Ambrose who was a beast at the back. Stuniverse
Game date: Saturday 4th April 2020 Pre-match v Airdrieonians (a) - Ladbrokes League 1 (32) Match Preview Team Selection Unavailable: Paul Dixon (ankle) Aidan Connolly (knee) Calum Macdonald (ankle) Doubtful: Mark Durnan (calf-90) Michael Doyle (thigh-90) BairnsNews: You have some injury problems, don't you? Stuniverse: Yes, all down the left. Aidan Connolly has a knee issue, so Louis Longridge switches to the left and Charlie Telfer comes in. Both our left-backs, Calum Macdonald and Paul Dixon, are out with ankle injuries. Michael Doyle moves to left-back and Sam Dryden comes in. Jahmal Hector-Ingram starts ahead of Declan McManus, who is very unfortunate to drop down to the bench. We only have a small squad and we're down to the bare bones again which is why I've named two goalkeepers on the bench for the second time this season. Post-match: Airdrieonians (0) 2-5 (3) Falkirk BairnsNews: No sign of you easing up now you've won the title. Stuniverse: No. And it wouldn't be right to do so. There are teams chasing playoffs and trying to avoid relegation still, so we have to be professional, respect the other clubs in our division, and play every game to win as we've done all season. Up front, we were lethal today. Louis Longridge opened the scoring. Conor Sammon grabbed a hat-trick, including one from the penalty spot. Charlie Telfer chipped in after the break. BairnsNews: You don't usually tactically switch goalkeepers. Why did you bring Pelmard-Bassi on? Stuniverse: As a reward for the young goalkeeper. Solal is here as our #3 goalkeeper, he's young, works hard in training, and never complains. At 4-0 up, with half an hour to go, what better time to give him his debut. That's four wins out of four against Raith this season, five if we include the cup-tie. Stuniverse: Thanks. Raith Rovers are a very good team, with very good players, which shows how good we've played this season to win League One. Jahmal Hector-Ingram gave us the lead, just before the break. Raith equalised fairly late-on, after some sustained pressure, but then Michael Tidser won it for us two minutes later. Stuniverse: Today is just about match fitness. We currently have a 21-man squad, with three goalkeepers. We're going to look to give everybody, apart from one of the goalies, 45 minutes and someone will have to play the whole game. Team Selection BairnsNews: Any injury news? Stuniverse: No. Fortunately. Everybody is fit and raring to go. Post-match: Falkirk (2) 3-1 (0) Linlithgow Rose BairnsNews: Did you get what you wanted to out of that match? Stuniverse: Yes, I think so. It was always about fitness and the players all came through it well. There was some rustiness, to be expected after the summer holidays, and we also had a number of players who have only just joined us. Apart from a silly penalty we gave away, they never really troubled us. A brace from Jahmal Hector-Ingram in the first-half, and another from Oladapo Afolayan made it a comfortable win. We got an hour into the legs of our starting players and half an hour for everyone else. We have more work to do, that's obvious, but a 3-1 win this stage of pre-season is satisfying. A first-half brace from Conor Sammon, one from the penalty spot, and a second-half goal from Oladapo Afolayan saw us to victory.
