HIBS SET SIGHTS ON OKO-FLEX

The Bhoys: Hibernian have reportedly set their sights on Celtic's 21 year-old attacker Armstrong Oko-Flex. Considered a squad player at Celtic Park, Oko-Flex has been in fine form during Fraser Hornby's absense with a broken leg, scoring nine goals, with two assists, in 11 (6) appearances. With Oko-Flex counting as Home Grown (HGN), despite being Irish and starting his football career at Arsenal, it's unknown whether Celtic manager Stuniverse would be willing to do a deal with his former club.

Oko-Flex could be a wanted man this January transfer window with reports English Championship side West Bromwich Albion are also keen on signing the young attacker.

Pre-match v Aberdeen (H) - Ladbrokes Premiership (15)

Neil Lennon (Napoli manager):

SP15_Aberdeen_pre_neil-lennon.thumb.png.612bdf26156855931be77d4f3691d3ef.png

The Bhoys: How do you feel about Neil Lennon's tendency to comment on Celtic and how you're doing?

Stuniverse: We're doing very well so I'd be surprised if he was anything other than complimentary. Did we ever qualify for the European Champions Cup knockout round when Neil was in charge? Look, Neil was a player here, he was a coach here, he was twice a manager here and Celtic's in his blood. He's a supporter. He's entitled to his opinion. How is he doing in Italy, any way?

The Bhoys: His Napoli side are 2nd, I believe, eight points behind Inter.

Stuniverse: That's pretty good going in his first season because Napoli finished 5th last season, didn't they?

The Bhoys: I believe so. Yes. What's happened here? I'm meant top be asking the questions.

Stuniverse: Over to you, then.

Match Preview

SP15_Aberdeen_media.thumb.png.47e5a378578a86e725284374038d7be6.png

The Bhoys: Back to the league and a home game against 7th placed Aberdeen. This is a game you should be winning hands-down, isn't it?

Stuniverse: On paper, yes. But football isn't played on paper, it's played on grass. I have a lot of time for David Moyes and he always has his teams well organised. I'm surprised they're not higher up the Premiership league table to be honest. They usually play this weird formation that nobody else does. It's hard to break down, to be honest, which makes for a frustrating game where we'll need to be patient.

SP15_Aberdeen_formation.thumb.png.cf5982bdccd100a72b1437668989f4ec.png

The Bhoys: How do you prepare for a system like that?

Stuniverse: Well, first of all, we work our scout responsible for opposition scouting very hard, and our analysts even harder, and then we drill our players on the training pitch and make sure they know what they're likely to be up against. And you hope, on the day, that our players perform and we're good enough to break them down.

SP15_Aberdeen_preview.thumb.png.f77c025eccd23f4b427aeca5e82e9f65.png

The Bhoys: How are the players after winning the Betfred Cup on Sunday?

Stuniverse: The boys are buzzing, to be honest. Chancel Mbemba and Joe Willock are a bit tired and they may not start. Constantin Frommann has finished his intensive language course and now speaks fluent English; I'm hoping to get him more involved but, unfortunately, he took a nasty gash to his upper leg in training so we won't be rushing him.

Unavailable: Anthony Ralston (broken leg), Fraser Hornby (broken leg), Constantin Frommann (gashed upper leg), Scott McKellar (pulled knee ligaments).

Doubtful: Danylo Sikan (pulled thigh-90), Jordan Ross (tight groin-90), Brandon Williams (tight thigh-90), Tin Jedvaj (broken leg-45), Joe Willock (jaded-87%), Chancel Mbemba (jaded-82%).

CELTIC - NO WONDER KIDS THIS INTAKE

The Bhoys: Before today's game at Celtic Park against Aberdeen, I had a quick chat with Celtic's Head of Youth Development Chris McCart and, unfortunately, it doesn't sound like there’ll be any standout wonder kids in the Youth Academy Intake at the end of the season.

Celtic v Aberdeen - Ladbrokes Premiership (15)

Team Selection

SP15_Aberdeen_selection.thumb.png.8f36a62f2c6989145ec545dcd94a6a0e.png

The Bhoys: Four changes after your Cup Final triumph.

Stuniverse: Yes. Wuilker Farinez (GK) picks up the gloves again, from Ugurcan Cakir, for this Premiership game. Brandon Williams (RB) returns after a tight thigh for Chancel Mbemba (jaded). Karamoko Dembele (MR) replaces Joe Willock (jaded). Up front, Paddy McKee (SC) replaces Armstrong Oko-Flex.

The Bhoys: Is that because you'll be selling Oko-Flex in January?

Stuniverse: Just before a game is neither the time, nor the place to be asking questions like that. I'll see you after the game.

The Bhoys: Good luck.

Post-match: Celic (0) 1-0 (0) Aberdeen

SP15_Aberdeen_report.thumb.png.5e336c0cf43c10eb815a9e7659ebff1f.png

The Bhoys: Exactly what you said it would be. A frustrating match, where you had to be patient to get the win. But you did create plenty of chances.

Stuniverse: Yes. We've seen enough of Aberdeen under David Moyes to know what to expect and they played as we thought they would. I was pleased with the number of chances we created, but it's not easy when they defend in numbers; it's one thing creating the chances, but when you have to shoot through a crowd of players all the time, it's not easy. And when our shots did get through, I thought their young goalkeeper Steven Harrison was magnificent.

I was grateful to the referee in the second minute. I feared the worst after Stuart Findlay's rash tackle on Sam Cosgrove, but the ref just gave Stuart a stern talking to. We hit the post through Karamoko Dembele and then their goalkeeper got to his feet quickly to brilliantly save Lawrence Shankland's shot from the rebound.

SP15_Aberdeen_1-0.thumb.png.29e69ccab3f07c68ed33c79dbf99d687.png

We got the breaklthrough after 55 minutes. Karamoko Dembele received Brandon Williams's throw-in, dribbled into the penalty area, and rifled a shot past their goalkeeper.

I was surprised David didn't change things after we took the lead. I thought if they'd shown some attacking intent, it would have opened the game up which might have made things easier for us to score a second, but they seemed content to defend a 1-0 loss.

SP15_Aberdeen_lgTab.thumb.png.6214d4948d02e347323e675f7f6f0a17.png

The Bhoys: With Hearts losing, and Rangers drawing at the weekend, you capitalised by winning your game-in-hand tonight. That makes 17 unbeaten in the Premiership, including last season, and your lead at the top is now 13 points.

Stuniverse: We have put ourselves in a very strong position, but we're still not at the halfway point. We have to work even harder, for the rest of the season, to make sure we don't blow this.

SP15_Aberdeen_17.thumb.png.9b6ba3bb2c27e5226bae88f4fec68e80.png

Stuniverse (Celtic manager):

SP15_Aberdeen_post-stuniverse.thumb.png.a60c7178240c8004a67fbbd4ec60baae.png

The Bhoys: There's reports of interest from West Brom and your former club Hibs in Oko-Flex. Is that why he sat on the bench the whole 90 minutes?

Stuniverse: Look, I gave you a bit of a hard time earlier when you asked me that, but just before a game is not the time for this sort of question. All I'm focussed on at that point is the game, the team selected, and how we're going to win. That's all.

The Bhoys: OK.  Understood. I'll bear that in mind.

Stuniverse: Thank you. To answer your question. As far as the team selection went, Paddy McKee has been performing brilliantly in the reserves and in training and we have high hopes for the 18 year-old. I thought today was an opportunity to give him a first-team run-out at Celtic Park in the Premiership. As the game panned out, I was able to give him the full 90 minutes.

Regarding bids for Armstrong Oko-Flex, well there hasn't been any so, until there is, it's all speculation. I've been playing Armstrong up front with Fraser Hornby injured, and Danylo Sikan's form being affected by a string of niggling injuries. Armstrong isn't making the team in his preferred wing position, with Karamoko Dembele, Joe Willock and Mikey Johnston doing well, and up front we have youngsters Paddy McKee and Jordan Ross coming through as well. Armstrong has been given a run of games, and he's been banging in goals for us, but, honestly, when Fraser Hornby and Danylo Sikan are fit, Armstrong will need to impress to continue getting playing time.

The Bhoys: Is he for sale then?

Stuniverse: I didn't say that. At this moment in time, there's been no bids and Armstrong Oko-Flex is not on the transfer list.

EAGLES WANT HENDERSON

The Bhoys: You can tell we're close to the transfer window as the rumours and speculation are starting up again. The latest is that English Premiership side are keen to sign Celtic's 2 year-old, Scottish international midfielder Ewan Henderson

Celtic manager Stuniverse is unlikely to want to sell Henderson, but with the midfielder currently behind captain Dennis PraetStevie Mallan, and vice-captain Scott McTominay in the pecking order it may be difficult for Celtic to keep hold of Henderson should he want to leave Celtic Park.

Sometimes FM does make me smile...

Stevie Burns wants a new contract due to his importance to the team.

20231215_Burns1.thumb.png.057c3a9cf3758fce3454a5d2d8f27d99.png

No, I'm not talking to you Stevie. Importance to the team? I don't even know who you are, pal, and I'm the manager. If you'd caught our eye this season, you'd be among the group of ten youngsters who've been allocated squad numbers and are training with the first-team already.

20231215_Burns7.thumb.png.7a337722c65434a47cf08bd594f6e9c4.png

I'll let Greg Taylor tell you that if you knuckle down, impress the coaches in the reserves, or the U18s, or wherever you are, your contract will sort itself out.

20231215_Burns2.thumb.png.003ab25e793296efc6edb80d648d8c46.png

That didn't work. OK, let's see who you are Stevie Burns?

No, I'm not offering you a new contract and, besides, you're bothering the wrong man as my Head of Youth Development, Chris McCart, deals with contract renewals at your level.

Pre-match v Hibernian (H) - Ladbrokes Premiership (16)

Match Preview

SP16_Hibs_media.thumb.png.2bf94c0008f9ebabacacacc063a51bd6.png

The Bhoys: Hearts and Rangers have both won already, and results yesterday saw Hibs drop back to 5th. Having already beaten your former employers 2-1 at Easter Road this season, you must be confident of another win at Celtic Park today.

Stuniverse: We've set ourselves up with a big points gap over the chasers and it's up to us to maintain that for the rest of the season and extend it if we can. It'll be nice to welcome friends and former colleagues at Hibs to Celtic Park but, make no mistake, we're intent on winning this game and I'm confident we will.

SP16_Hibs_preview.thumb.png.50f005498730e266dd3dc436cf8f2595.png

The Bhoys: How's the injury and fitness situation looking?

Stuniverse: It's gettng better. I'm delighted that Tin Jedvaj (broken leg) has been given the all-clear to start playing again, and both Danylo Sikan (thigh) and Jordan Ross (groin) have been given the all-clear as well. Were going to be resting Karamoko Dembele for a couple of weeks though on the advice of our medical team; Karamoko wasn't too happy about it, he always wants to play, but he did accept it in the end.

Unavailable: Anthony Ralston (broken leg), Fraser Hornby (broken leg), Constantin Frommann (gashed upper leg), Scott McKellar (pulled knee ligaments), Karamoko Dembele (rested).

Doubtful: Brandon Williams (tight thigh-90).

Celtic v Hibernian - Ladbrokes Premiership (16)

Team Selection

SP16_Hibs_selection.thumb.png.cec90cb555efef66d019fcf811393810.png

The Bhoys: Four changes today and a welcome return on the bench.

Stuniverse: Yes. Absolutely. Chancel Mbemba (jaded) returns to central defence in place of Scott McTominay. Armstrong Oko-Flex starts on the right-wing as we're looking after young Karamoko Dembele and resting him for a couple of weeks. Joe Willock is back on the left-wing, instead of Mikey Johnston. Up front, Danylo Sikan is over his thigh problem and returns in place of Paddy McKee.

I'm delighted to welcome Tin Jedvaj back onto the bench after recovering from his broken leg. We don't want to rush Tin back, but if we get an opportunity today to give him some playing time, we'll take it.

Post-match: Celtic (0) 2-0 (0) Hibernian

SP16_Hibs_report.thumb.png.8cdb5b832835f2b58dfbcfd62f6029cb.png

The Bhoys: You left it late, and you had to survive a penalty scare against you, but you scraped a win in the end.

Stuniverse: Yes. We did. Alex Neil has certainly stamped his mark on the Hibs side as only five of their starting line-up played for me at Easter Road last season. Alex has got them playing very well and they matched us toe-for-toe for the first hour. In the last 30 minutes, I thought they tired and we took advantage of that with Jordan Ross, on as a substitute, grabbing a brace with two superb headers.

SP16_Hibs_penalty.png.6f24615c4a9a0ed75ef0fde80957fd01.png

After 33 minutes, Greg Taylor mistimes his sliding tackle and Hibs have a penalty. Incredibly, Hulme put it a yard wide.

On 71 minutes we thought we had the lead. Chancel Mbemba headed Stevie Mallan's free-kick back across goal, Dennis Praet headed it in, but it was ruled out for offside.

SP16_Hibs_1-0.thumb.png.8d528f3ec49338ae0ad3a0e3028ddadc.png

On 77 minutes, we did take the lead when Jordan Ross headed in Stevie Mallan's free-kick at the far post. Jordan Ross then sealed the win at 2-0 when he headed home Stevie Mallan's 90+2 minute corner.

Stuniverse (Celtic manager):

SP16_Hibs_lgTab.thumb.png.e12ff5d3068afd619d2e3b44bc99495c.png

The Bhoys: The transfer window opens in a couple of weeks, and you've already announced that Callum Paterson and Jackie Halsman will be joining Celtic on New Years Day. Can we expect to see Celtic doing any more business?

Stuniverse: I wouldn't expect too much, no. I'm very happy with the shape and balance of the first-team squad and it's already proving difficult to give young players like Jordan Ross the playing time they need to aid their development. So I can't see us adding to the senior players. I don't want to sell any of them either, but that could change if someone offers us ridiculously crazy money for someone. The one thing we are actively looking at doing this window, if we can, is bringing in good, young, Scottish players like Jackie Halsman.

SHINNIE SIGNS FOR CELTIC

The Bhoys: After tonight's victory over Hibernian, Celtic confirmed the signing of Ross County's 19 year-old right-winger Ryan Shinnie for a fee of £60K. Shinnie, who already has Premiership experience playing for Ross County, has signed a contract until the summer of 2027 and will arrive at Celtic Park on New Year's Day along with Callum Paterson and Jackie Halsman.

CELTIC DRAW SCHALKE 04 IN KNOCKOUT ROUND

The Bhoys: Celtic have been drawn against German Bundesliga side Schalke 04 in the First Knockout Round of the European Champions Cup. The first-leg will be played at Celtic Park.

Schalke 04 are 3rd in the Bundesliga and, after qualifying ahead of current Bundesliga leaders Borussia Dortmund in Group C, Celtic and their manager Stuniverse will fancy their chances of progessing to at least the Quarter-Finals.

CELTIC APPLY FOR WORK PERMIT

The Bhoys are hearing from reliable sources that Celtic have applied for a work permit for Leganes's 24 year-old Spanish central defender Javier Montero. If true, the signing of a Spanish, senior player, would appear to contradict what Celtic manager Stuniverse told us after the Hibernian match. We'll be sure to ask Stuniverse about this after tomorrow night's Premiership match at home to Inverness Caledonian Thistle.

CELTIC CAPTAIN A WANTED MAN

The Boys: Villarreal appear to be leading the chase for Celtic's captain Dennis Praet in the build-up to the January transfer Window. Milan and Manchester United are also interested in the 29 year-old Belgian.

Celtic rejected bids for Praet in the summer and the Celtic captain appeared happy to stay at Celtic Park. Whether that will still be the case in January remains to be seen.

The Bhoys: A home game to second-bottom Inverness Cally Thistle should be an easy win, shouldn't it?

Stuniverse: Without being disrespectful, we'd like to think so, yes, but Inverness won't make it easy for us. We won 3-0 at Caledonian Stadium earlier in the season and we'll take a lot of confidence from that.

Stuniverse: It's getting better all the time. We only have Anthony Ralston (broken leg) and Fraser Hornby (broken leg) officially ruled out and we're still resting Karamoko Dembele. Everybody else, including Tin Jedvaj (broken leg), are available to start but there's three or four we still want to wrap in cotton wool a bit.

Unavailable: Anthony Ralston (broken leg), Fraser Hornby (broken leg), Karamoko Dembele (rested).

Doubtful: Brandon Williams (tight thigh-90), Constantin Frommann (gashed upper leg-90), Scott McKellar (pulled knee ligaments-60).

Celtic v Inverness Caledonian Thistle - Ladbrokes Premiership (17)

Team Selection

SP17_Inverness_selection.thumb.png.1212ae3c0260e4835b51c4c7b59f00c9.png

The Bhoys: Two changes today and one's a very interesting one.

Stuniverse: Yes. Tin Jedvaj comes in for Brandon Williams, making his first start since he broke his leg. And, after his two goals as a sub against Hibernian, I've rewarded Jordan Ross with a start. Danylo Sikan makes way.

The Bhoys: Can Jedvaj last a full game?

Stuniverse: We have no intention of Tin playing a full game but if we can give him between 45 minutes and an hour with no problems we'll be very happy with that.

Post-match: Celtic (2) 3-0 (0) Inverness Caledonian Thistle

SP17_Inverness_report.thumb.png.32c730800a2966fdad179f89dfd128e3.png

The Bhoys: A good win. What did you make of it?

Stuniverse: Exactly that. A good win. We were the dominant force from first whistle to last. We scored three goals, hit the woodwork three times, on another day we would've scored more. We also got Tin Jedvaj through the best part of an hour after his broken leg. I thought he did ok, and he could've lasted longer out there, but when he picked up a yellow card we decided it was time to take him off.

SP17_Inverness_1-0.thumb.png.746ac8e7e5b5d46725060733cbbd8cdd.png

Jordan Ross picked up where he left off against Hibs, by heading Stevie Mallan's 16th minute cross into the back of the net.

SP17_Inverness_2-0.thumb.png.43cfce912f60e869f014b7a9c69f11d2.png

On 21 minutes, Stevie Mallan got on the scoresheet himself, converting a penalty after Joe Willock had been tripped just inside the penalty area. Stevie Mallan almost scored again, 10 minutes later, but their goalkeeper made a superb save to keep his free-kick out.

SP17_Inverness_3-0.thumb.png.da6ef088050babf1f8399d7ec3d2f375.png

Right at the death, Joe Willock set-off on a brilliant run down the left, crossed into the penalty area, where Armstrong Oko-Flex cut inside and placed his shot across the goalkeeper into the far side of the net.

Stuniverse (Celtic manager):

SP17_Inverness_lgTab.thumb.png.598b1b5678fd515980b9316542cde8a8.png

The Bhoys: Hearts and Rangers both won so it's as you were at the top.

Stuniverse: I'm sure they would much rather be where we are, 13 points clear at the top.

The Bhoys: After telling us last time that you were only likely to sign young, Scottish players, you've applied for and then appealed a work permit decision for a Spanish centre-back.

Stuniverse: You're right, and that for the most part, what I said after the Hibs game, is correct... but defence is the exception. Due to injuries and tiredness we've been a bit thin on the ground at the back. We don't have the numbers and the Academy defenders are someway off the standard we're looking for at the current time. Craig King's played a couple of games, but he's not really ready and the other young defenders are even less ready. So when a left-footed centre-back of Javier Montero's quality became available, at a very reasonable price, we felt we had to do everything we could to try and sign him. Everything's in place, we're just waiting on the work permit appeal.

Pre-match v Livingston (a) - Ladbrokes Premiership (18)

Match Preview

SP18_Livingston_moyes.png.9d0bc25c7ac37906ee904a008f7962eb.png

The Bhoys: You were very complimentary about David Moyes when you played Aberdeen recently. What are your thoughts now that Aberdeen have sacked him?

Stuniverse: I feel sorry for David, I honestly do. He always had Aberdeen well organised against us, and Hibs when I came up against him last season. But I think I said when we last played Aberdeen that I was surprised they were in the bottom half of the table. And against us, Aberdeen were very negative, defending deep with all their players behind the ball. Even when we went 1-0 up, Aberdeen didn't change their approach. Hopefully David will bounce back somewhere else and be successful there.

SP18_Livingston_media.thumb.png.aed9a32fd2e93c555a5e5056d5d9fa8b.png

The Bhoys: Hearts play Rangers today, whilst you're away to 7th placed Livingston.

Stuniverse: We're just going to focus on ourselves and getting a good result against Livingston, ahead of a tough game away to 4th placed Kilmarnock on Boxing Day. We can't influence the game at Ibrox... but if Rangers and Hearts would be kind enough to draw, we'd really appreciate it.

SP18_Livingston_preview.thumb.png.183d506b4b1cddb0cb11f02b2c1cc14e.png

The Bhoys: You mentioned the Kilmarnock match so you're obviously thinking of the match after Livingston. Does that mean you may rest some players to make sure they're fresh and fit for the Kilmarnock match?

Stuniverse: That's definitely something I'm considering. Yes.

Unavailable: Anthony Ralston (broken leg), Fraser Hornby (broken leg), Karamoko Dembele (rest), Chancel Mbemba (rest).

Doubtful: Brandon Williams (tight thigh-90), Constantin Frommann (gashed upper leg-90), Scott McKellar (pulled knee ligaments-75), Joe Willock (jaded-88%).

Livingston v Celtic - Ladbrokes Premiership (18)

Team Selection

SP18_Livingston_selection.thumb.png.c8654b45584608153d2736957b08f738.png

The Bhoys: You've made nine changes today. NINE. Isn't that being disrespecful to Livingston?

Stuniverse: No, I don't think so. We have two away games three days apart, at The Tony Macaroni Arena today, and then against Kilmarnock at Rugby Park on Boxing Day. It was always likely we'd play a different starting 11 in each game. We're fortunate that we have a good, strong squad, and we're going to use it over these next two games.

So, the changes: Uguracan Cakir (GK), Scott McKellar (DC), Scott McTominay (DC), Brandon Williams (DL), Stuart McJanet (MR), Ewan Henderson (MC), Paddy McKee (MC), Mikey Johnston (ML) and Danylo Sikan (SC) for Wuilker Farinez, Chancel Mbemba, Stuart Findlay, Greg Taylor, Armstrong Oko-Flex, Stevie Mallan, Dennis Praet, Joe Willock and Lawrence Shankland.

Post-match: Livingston (0) 1-3 (2) Celtic

SP18_Livingston_report.thumb.png.83b6d6703d43c8f4a12d6dfd0ea1bef1.png

The Bhoys: That was a very impressive win with, what many considered to be, a weakened Celtic team. What did you make of it?

Stuniverse: I wouldn't say it was a weakened side. I have a squad of first-team players and, as I've told the players from the day I arrived, we're going to need all of them to play their part if we're going to achieve our aims across four competition this season. We bossed the game, I thought. Apart from one mistake by our goalkeeper, we defended very solidly and, going forward, we showed creativity and a cohesion that I wasn't expecting from 11 players who haven't played together much this season. I was proud of all 11 player today and they showed why they are all vita components of this squad.

SP18_Livingston_1-0.thumb.png.7b4334f79ac588bef1a63d6dbf7b56fb.png

On seven minutes, Scott McKellar floated in a cross from the right, Danylo Sikan glanced it on with his head, and Stuart McJanet stabbed the ball past the goalkeeper.

SP18_Livingston_2-0.thumb.png.81fa92e4565e55aef601e4042c5c3934.png

We doubled our lead on 42 minutes in somewhat of a goalmouth scramble, Jordan Ross's shot was blocked, but Danylo Sikan reacted quickest to make it 2-0.

SP18_Livingston_3-0.thumb.png.42e394337dcd5795c497ecc23ad55eae.png

Danylo Sikan made it 3-0 after Mikey Johnston's initial shot had been parried by the goalkeeper on 55 minutes.

SP18_Livingston_3-1.thumb.png.d2765e7e4775a838d10f378b495a5289.png

A mistake by our goalkeeper Ugurcan Cakir when he came and completely missed a cross, left Tulloch with a 58th minute tap-in for 3-1.

SP18_Livingston_lgTab.thumb.png.b8f90a7c6e31ebb4c9566e800f1c2c33.png

The Bhoys: You got your wish at Ibrox when Hearts scored a 93rd minute equaliser against Rangers. Your lead at the top has stretched to 15 points.

Stuniverse: All in all, a very good day for us. Our supporters can enjoy their Christmas now and I'd like to wish them all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Pre-match v Kilmarnock (a) - Ladbrokes Premiership (19)

Match Preview

SP19_Kilmarnock_media.thumb.png.ff75107fca6bb67d92688297da197106.png

The Bhoys: After finishing 8th last season, Kilmarnock have surprised many people with their rise to 4th this season. You beat them 2-0 at Celtic Park earlier in the season, but then needed penalties at Hampden Park, after a 1-1 draw, to get past them in the Betfred Cup semi-final. What are you expecting from Kilmarnock today?

Stuniverse: I'm expecting a very difficult game. Vinny Perth has Kilmarnock playing very well. They pushed us all the way at Hampden Park and they're not 4th by good fortune, Kilmarnock are there on merit.

SP19_Kilmarnock_preview.thumb.png.997b904a116263c7b20fec3e2355e415.png

The Bhoys: You made nine changes for the Livingston game to rest players. Has it worked? Do you have a fit squad with fresh legs to select from?

Stuniverse: Prety much. Yes. Tin Jedvaj is feeling it a bit after two appearances on his return from a broken leg so we'll be careful with him. Fraser Horny is back in training after his own broken leg. Anthony Ralston is still out with a broken leg. Other than them, the players are all raring to go.

Unavailable: Anthony Ralston (broken leg).

Doubtful: Constantin Frommann (gashed upper leg-90), Scott McKellar (pulled knee ligaments-75), Fraser Hornby (broken leg-45), Tin Jedvaj (jaded-87%).

Kilmarnock v Celtic - Ladbrokes Premiership (19)

Team Selection

SP19_Kilmarnock_selection.thumb.png.50479eb13d44ffd16cc1f493ed613122.png

The Bhoys: Another nine changes.

Stuniverse: Wuilker Farinez (GK), Chancel Mbemba (DR), Stuart Findlay (DC), Greg Taylor (DL), Karamoko Dembele (MR), Stevie Mallan (MC), Dennis Praet (MC), Joe Willock (ML) and Lawrence Shankland (SC) for Ugurcan Cakir, Tin Jedvaj, Scott McTominay, Brandon Williams, Stuart McJanet, Ewan Henderson, Paddy McKee, Mikey Johnston and Jordan Ross.

Post-match: Kilmarnock (0) 0-5 (5) Celtic

SP19_Kilmarnock_report.thumb.png.80ded19a91e948da804ca1ac9084c0be.png

The Bhoys: You blew Kilmarnock away and you blew them away early. I'm struggling to think of a better 20 minute spell I've seen from a Celtic side. Ever. And you did it away from home as well.

Stuniverse: Thank you. That's praise indeed for my players. I think we saw the benefit of fresh legs today. My players were fit and fresh, Kilmarnock's players looked leggy and lethargic, but to be 5-0 up inside 20 minutes was beyond our wildest dreams.

SP19_Kilmarnock_1-0.thumb.png.b71de1cf92f31528fa48b30110ecdac7.png

It only took three minutes for us to take the lead through Karamoko Dembele who looked so much sharper after being rested for a couple of games. Lawrence Shankland flicked on Danylo Sikan's cross, and Karamoko Dembele buried it in the opposite corner.

SP19_Kilmarnock_2-0.thumb.png.88d63333f863db47e63ac3080ae2f9b2.png

We were 2-0 up less than a minute later. Karamoko Dembele put Danylo Sikan clean through and the Croatian showed great composure to fire past the goalkeeper.

SP19_Kilmarnock_3-0.thumb.png.f15372b3d4aa8812bfdbcc92b9980842.png

We were on fire and it was 3-0 after 13 minutes. This time Danylo Sikan turned provider and Lawrence Shankland scored with a shot that went in off the post.

SP19_Kilmarnock_4-0.thumb.png.22ea30ddf453336cac8e887ac05943f9.png

And after 17 minutes it was 4-0. Brilliant individual play by Danylo Sikan saw him receive Greg Taylor's throw-in, dribble into the penalty area, skip over a sliding tackle, and beat the goalkeeper at his near post.

On 17 minutes we had a scare with Kilmarnock's first real attack of the game when they hit the post from long-range.

SP19_Kilmarnock_5-0.thumb.png.204fe75a8e752354ab1e1ab91ced8cdd.png

Incredibly we were 5-0 up on 20 minutes when the smallest player on the pitch, Karamoko Dembele, headed home Stevie Mallan's corner.

Stuniverse (Celtic manager):

SP19_Kilmarnock_lgTab.thumb.png.10ec96454ad7f3ab3fb521d1147a3297.png

The Bhoys: Hearts drew and Rangers won so Rangers have leap-frogged Hearts into 2nd place. At the halfway stage, your lead at the top is now 16 points.

Stuniverse: There's still half a season to go but I'd say it's our title to win or throw away right now.

LEGANES: WE'LL 'DO WHAT IT TAKES' TO SIGN JEDVAJ

The Bhoys: Spanish First Division Leganes manager Julio Velazquez has made Celtic's 28 year-old right-back Tin Jedvaj a January transfer target with Leganes expected to 'do what it takes' to sign the Croatian.

Leganes and Celtic have already agreed a transfer deal ahead of the January transfer window with Leganes 24 year-old centre-back Javier Montero due to join Celtic for £2.1M on January 1st.

Match Preview

SP20_DundeeUtd_media.thumb.png.a035fa158b93a123ccff9c5506d8bb57.png

The Bhoys: Dundee United are on a three-match unbeaten run and currently sit 8th in the Premiership. What are you expecting from Stuart McCall's team today?

Stuniverse: Well Dundee United are in good form and that will make them confident and dangerous opponents. We've beaten them twice already this season though, 3-1 at Celtic Park in the Betfred Cup and 3-0 at Tannadice Park in the Premiership. We're confident, but we know we'll have to work hard and match them for commitment and desire if we're to get a result.

SP20_DundeeUtd_preview.thumb.png.b4f6e4e828b0b44f2ef3c381a127ed1f.png

The Bhoys: With a crucial match against 3rd placed Hearts, on Tuesday at Celtic Park, will you be resting any players to keep them fresh for that fixture?

Stuniverse: Well it worked very well when we rested players against Livingston to keep them fresh for the Kilmarnock game so it's something we're considering. We'll definitely be resting Chancel Mbemba on medical advice and I doubt Chancel with feature against Hearts either.

Unavailable: Anthony Ralston (broken leg), Chancel Mbemba (rested).

Doubtful: Constantin Frommann (gashed upper leg-90), Fraser Hornby (broken leg-45).

SP20_DundeeUtd_report.thumb.png.d221c75714f907b87a4a5cc2171d60a6.png

The Bhoys: You had lots of chances but, up until added on time at the end, only one goal to show for it.

Stuniverse: I think you have to give Dundee United a lot of credit for that. They worked hard, kept their shape, got a lot of men back, and defended well. They forced us into a lot of long shots and it's always difficult to score through a crowd of players. In goal for them, Jordan Archer once again showed what a good shot stopper he is.

But I was happy with our play going forward. We were patient, we didn't get frustrated, the crowd stuck with us, and two good goals from Jordan Ross and Mikey Johnstone gave us the win, and proved how much quality depth we've got in this squad.

SP20_DundeeUtd_lgTab.thumb.png.2d53c655d4c1b23b1cf90d2537a59ad4.png

The Bhoys: There's been a lot of reported interest from other clubs in a number of your key players. Are we likely to see any departures from Celtic Park in the January transfer window?

Stuniverse: It’s all hypothetical because there’s been no bids. That said, I'm not planning on selling any of our senior players. No. But you can never tell in the January transfer window. Teams can panic and make crazy offers. Players can get unsettled sometimes, become a negative influence in the squad, and if it's best for the club, sometimes you have to reluctantly let players go. I'm hoping we won't lose anybody this window, I certainly don't want to offload any players... although some of our younger players may go out on loan.

CELTIC - JANUARY FIXTURES

The Bhoys: After a busy December which saw Celtic win eight matches, including the Betfred Cuop Final against Dundee, Celtic have a relatively quiet January with four Premiership fixtures, a Scottish Cup Fourth Round cup-tie at home to League 1 side East Fife, and friendlies against AZ Alkmaar (Eredivisie) and FC St. Pauli (Bundesliga 2).

The Premiership highlights are Hearts (3rd) next up at Celtic Park, and Rangers in an Old Firm derby on a Wednesday night at Ibrox.

TRANSFER WINDOW OPENS - CELTIC RUMOURS

The Bhoys: With the January transfer window now open, expect another month of Celtic transfer speculation. 22 year-old Ukranian striker Danylo Sikan is the latest in a long line of Celtic players linked with a move away from Celtic Park in January, with Sky Sports claiming Aston Villa want to sign him.

Meanwhile, Celtic are being linked with moves for Arsenal's Reiss Nelson and Hibernian's Marc Easdale.

Pre-match v Heart of Midlothian (H) - Ladbrokes Premiership (21)

Match Preview

SP21_Hearts_media.thumb.png.665bab686194e436281fb49d05177e11.png

The Bhoys: This is a big match, home to 3rd placed Hearts. With a 17 point advantage over Hearts, a win at Celtic Park stretches that to 20 and as good as puts  Hearts out of the title race, doesn't it?

Stuniverse: As I've said before, I think the Premiership title is ours to win or throw away now. If we can maintain our form so far, or close to it, for the rest of the season, then nobody catches us. The question is: can we maintain our form? We believe we can, the players have to prove it and beating Hearts, one of our main rivals, will send out that message.

SP21_Hearts_preview.thumb.png.5be02cf44ba65e5bedc0a104145f718f.png

The Bhoys: You made nine changes for the Dundee United match and won. Hopefully that means the players you rested, presumably with this match in mind, are fit and raring to go.

Stuniverse: Yes. They are. Even the players who played against Dundee United have a spring in their step. Everybody wants to play in this game but only 11 of them can start and only seven of them can make the bench. The only player I'm definitely ruling out, other than Anthony Ralston with his broken leg, is Chancel Mbemba who we're resting on medical advice.

The Bhoys: Does that mean we could see your new signings?

Stuniverse: Well they only joined us yesterday so it's more likely you'll see them in the friendlies and after the Winter break. Ryan Shinnie, who's recovering from a twisted knee, and Jackie Halsman are more ones for the future. Callum Paterson and Javier Montero are in contention for a place on the bench though.

Unavailable: Anthony Ralston (broken leg), Chancel Mbemba (rested).

Doubtful: Constantin Frommann (gashed upper leg-90), Ryan Shinnie (twisted knee-90), Fraser Hornby (broken leg-45).

SP21_Hearts_report.thumb.png.f6601f2c2366a74509525372562fb3fb.png

The Bhoys: The stats will say that Hearts had far more of the ball than you did but, in every other stat, you outperformed them.

Stuniverse: I can't fault my players today. They were magnificent, both with the ball, and without it. We proved that it's not how much possession you have that counts, it's what you do with the ball that really matters. After his broken leg, I was delighted for Tin Jedvaj when he scored his first goal of the season. Stevie Mallan added a brace, and Karamoko Dembele was unfortunate not to get on the scoresheet himself, hitting the post twice.

Celtic (Stuniverse manager):

Stuniverse: And our next Premiership game is an away Old Firm derby at Ibrox Stadium in a few weeks time.

Pre-match v AZ Alkmaar (a) - Friendly - Winter Break (1)

Match Preview

WB1_AZ_media.thumb.png.f98fd7f42f0340473b204c101d6ad290.png

The Bhoys: What's the thinking behind the two friendlies during the Winter Break?

Stuniverse: Mainly, we want to keep the players ticking over and fit. Against AZ Alkmaar today, we'll take a look at the senior players who haven't got as much playing time in as they'd like so far this season, and against St. Pauli we'll play some of the youngsters and make a final decision on who we might look to loan out for the rest of the season. In between the two games, we'll give the players a couple of days off.

The Bhoys: A good win in the end. Did you learn much from that match?

Stuniverse: Yes. We were good value for the win, although we felt rather aggrieved at 2-2 at half-time because we felt the penalty was unbelievably soft and their second goal was offside. But the players kept their heads and responded in the right way after the break. We got to take a first look at Constantin Frommann, Callum Paterson and Javier Montero. I thought they all did well.

RUTHERFORD RECALLED FROM ST. JOHNSTONE

The Bhoys: Celtic have recalled 19 year-old right-winger Will Rutherford from his season-long loan to St. Johnstone in the Championship. Rutherford made 16 appearances for St. Johnstone, scoring three goals, with four assists, for an average rating of 7.19. St. Johnstone are presently top of the Championship and are believed to be unhappy that Celtic have recalled Rutherford early.

We understand from sources at Celtic that manager Stuniverse will take a look at Rutherford in the St. Pauli friendly and then look to find him a loan move to the Premiership.

The Bhoys: What are your plans for this friendly match?

Stuniverse: Well it's a bit of a mixed bag to be honest. New signings Callum Paterson and Javier Montero get another run out. Fraser Hornby plays his first game after breaking his leg. The rest of the team and squad is mainly youngsters.

The Bhoys: A credible draw with a very young side. How do you assess it?

Stuniverse: Yes. I thought it was a very good workout and the young players all acquitted themselves very well. New signings Callum Paterson and Javier Montero had a good run out and it was great to get about an hour into Fraser Hornby's legs in his first appearance since breaking his leg.

RUTHERFORD MOVES TO INVERNESS ON LOAN

The Bhoys: Celtic's 19 year-old right-winger Will Rutherford has joined Inverness Caledonian Thistle on loan for the rest of the season. Rutherford enjoyed a very successful loan spell at Championship leaders St. Johnstone earlier in the season but Celtic recalled him early in January because they thought he was ready for a Premiership loan spell. Celtic manager Stuniverse will be delighted that a loan move to Premiership Inverness Caledonian Thistle has been agreed.

SORRY ABOUT RUTHERFORD, HAVE GEGGAN INSTEAD

The Bhoys: It looks like Celtic and Championship leaders St Johnstone have kissed and made up following Celtic's decision to recall their 19 year-old right winger Will Rutherford early from his loan spell at St. Johnstone. Rutherford has since moved on loan to Premiership Inverness Caledonian Thistle [see post above - 17 January 2024].

St Johnstone have confirmed they've taken another Celtic right winger, 19 year-old Paul Geggan, on loan for the rest of the season. We understand Geggan's future at Celtic is in some doubt after he rejected the new Celtic contract offered to him by Director of Football Nick Hammond.

MURRAY MOVES TO TANNADICE PARK ON LOAN

The Bhoys: Dundee United have confirmed the loan deal for Celtic's 20 year-old central defender / midfielder Dane Murray until the end of the season. Despite having a very successful loan spell with Kilmarnock in the Premiership in 2021/22, Murray has struggled to establish himself in the Celtic first-team.

KILMARNOCK TAKE SMITH ON LOAN

The Bhoys: Celtic's 21 year-old midfielder Connor Smith has joined Kilmarnock on loan until the end of the season. Smith has struggled to establish himself at Celtic, since his move from Hearts in July 2020. Smith has had one previous loan spell at League Two Cowdenbeath in 2019/20.

NEW DEAL - REWARD FOR OKO-FLEX'S EXCELLENT FORM

The Bhoys: Celtic's 21 year-old striker Armstrong Oko-Flex has put pen to paper on a new deal that will keep him at Celtic Park until the summer of 2027. Expected to be a fringe player this season, injuries to Fraser Hornby and Danylo Sikan have seen Oko-Flex step up and score 10 goals, and two assists, for an average rating of 7.27 from 14 (7) appearances this season.

There have been bids from Hibs and West Bromwich Albion for Oko-Flex this transfer window, and Celtic manager Stunverse must be hoping the news of Oko-Flex's new contract puts all of that to bed.

Pre-match v East Fife (H) - Scottish Cup Fourth Round

Stuniverse (Celtic manager):

SC_4R_EastFife_pre-stuniverse_Henderson.thumb.png.973d4a27d2b94f9c419e9c2e233503d4.png

The Bhoys: You've loaned a lot of younger players out this transfer window?

Stuniverse: Yes. We have a good crop of young players here who we think are good enough to play for Celtic. Some are already good enough and some will be in the future. Unfortunately, the way the season has panned out so far, with the possible exceptions of Jordan Ross (SC) and Paddy McKee (MC), we haven't really been able to give them the playing time they and we would've liked.

SC_4R_EastFife_loans.thumb.png.1a4fe2c071b3ba05f3a17d8653437370.png

Will Rutherford, Dane Murray and Connor Smith have all gone on loan to Premiership teams, Evangelos Patoulidis is on loan in France in Ligue 1, and three or four others have gone out on loan to the Championship, League 1 or League 2. We'll assess their development in the summer and go from there.

The Bhoys: What about the senior players? Any interest? Bids?

Stuniverse: Yes. And it's taking up far too much of my time to be honest. We've been very clear, none of our players are for sale, but that's not stopping the bids and enquiries flooding in. Most in demand is Tin Jedvaj (RB), with Brugge, Zenit, Kyviv, Spartak Moscow, Jeonbuk, Atalanta and Swansea all tabling bids. Hibs and West Brom have both made two bids for Armstrong Oko-Flex (SC). Burnley have made two bids for Scott McTominay (MC) and Leicester have enquired after his availability. Crystal Palace have enquired about Ewan Henderson and Burnley made an enquiry about Mikey Johnston.

We've rejected all of them. Most of the players are fine with that. Armstrong Oko-Flex's agent (his new one) wanted a new deal for his client and, to be fair, the form Armstrong's been showing this season we thought he deserved one. Tin Jedvaj has expressed a desire to leave and we've set an asking price of £12.75M and communicated that. So far, nobody's met that asking price.

Match Preview

The Bhoys: East Fife are 8th in League One. At Celtic Park, they shouldn't cause you any concern at all, should they?

Stuniverse: I'm sure East Fife will see this cup-tie as a welcome distraction from their relegation battle and will be up for this game. If we apply ourselves professionally, and match East Fife for endeavour, then our quality should shine through.

SC_4R_EastFife_preview.thumb.png.a9e7e85bdcf4afe1c627aea6509dd990.png

The Bhoys: How's the squad looking?

Stuniverse: Anthony Ralston is still out with his broken leg, Chancel Mbemba has pulled knee ligaments, and Brandon Williams has flu. Other than that, everybody's available, although Scott McTominay is still recovering from a tight groin and well need to be careful with Fraser Hornby as he's only just returned to full training following his broken leg.

Post-match: Celtic (3) 4- (0) East Fife

The Bhoys: Never in doubt. You're through to the next round.

Stuniverse: I think East Fife can hold their heads-up high. They were a credit to themselves, their manager Barry Sellars, and their fans. We always had too much for them and that showed from the early minutes. It's a shame, in some ways, they gifted us two penalties and, to be honest, I have no idea what the referee saw for the first one. Two good penalties from Paddy McKee, another goal for Jordan Ross, and the pick of the bunch from Mikey Johnston.

The Bhoys: Debuts for Paterson and Montero. How did they do?

Stuniverse: I thought Callum Paterson and Javier Montero had good, solid games in defence. I don't think East Fife had a single attempt over the 90 minutes. With Dennis Praet rested, Callum captained the side and I thought his leadership qualities were there for all to see.

Barry Sellars (East Fife manager):

The Bhoys: Next up, Rangers at Ibrox.

Stuniverse: Yes. That's going to be some game. I'm really looking forward to it.
