LATE NIGHT PHONE CALL

Stuniverse: Hi, Stan. How are you?

Stanley Baryla (Stuniverse's agent): Good thanks. Great result tonight.

Stuniverse: Thanks. We're disappointed we didn't win it late-on when we had the extra man.

Stanley BarylaCan you talk?

Stuniverse: Yeah. I'm in my hotel room. Sure.

20250219_OM_backrom_changes.thumb.png.ba9cf2158e110db8becd4a9b926e7067.png

Stanley Baryla: I've heard from Jacques-Henri Eyraud. He wants to know what backroom changes you want to make. Sounds like the Marseille job is yours if you want it.

Stuniverse: That's great news. It's just Jari [Litmanen] as Assistant Manager this time. You've got Jari's details, haven't you?

20250219_OM_backrom_changes_AM_jari_litmanen.thumb.png.fb343fd6ee9afae85b1334c9603fb94c.png

Stanley Baryla: Yeah, I'll speak to Jari's agent and we'll sort that with Jacques-Henri.

Stuniverse: Thanks. And they're ok with us joining at the end of the season?

Stanley Baryla: They know that's what you want but they haven't confirmed their agreement yet. I'll keep working on that one for you.

Stuniverse: Thanks. It's important to me, and Jari, that we see the season through with Celtic.

Stanley Baryla: I know. Leave it with me. Are you still going to the Marseille v Nice match on Saturday?

Stuniverse: That's the plan. Yes.

Stanley Baryla: Great. I'll see you Saturday at the Stade Orange Velodrome although I'm sure we'll talk again before then.

The Bhoys: Tomorrow will be your 100th match as manager of Celtic. Will it also be your last?

Stuniverse: No.

The Bhoys: Will it be your last Old Firm derby?

Stuniverse: No. After the encounter at Ibrox Stadium tomorrow, we still have 10 more games in the Premier League, including another one against Rangers in the Championship Group after the split. Will you be asking me this every time?

The Bhoys: Aye. Whilst your name remains linked with the Marseille job and your intentions remain unclear. Aye.

Stuniverse: OK. Let me tell me you it like it is and then hopefully we can focus on Celtic moving forward, as we intend to do.

Am I interested in managing Marseille at some point in the future? Yes. Are we in talks with Marseille? Yes. Has anything been agreed and signed? No. Have I been offered the job and discussed personal terms? No. Am I planning on leaving Celtic this season? No. Am I going to lead Celtic to a domestic treble this season? Hopefully, yes, that's the plan. OK?

The Bhoys: OK. Good luck against Rangers today and congratulations on reaching 100 matches as Celtic manager.

Stuniverse: Thank you.

PHONE CALL TO AGENT

Stanley Baryla (Stuniverse's agent): Hi, Stuniverse. Congratulations on beating Rangers again.

Stuniverse: Thanks, Stan. Have you heard anything?

Stanley Baryla: Yes, bad news, I'm afraid though.

Stuniverse: We didn't get the job.

Stanley Baryla: No. I'm sorry. There'll be announcing Thierry Laurey tomorrow.

Stuniverse: He used to play for Marseille, didn't he?

Stanley Baryla: Yes, he did. And he's already left Brest, together with his backroom team, and he'll start work at Marseille tomorrow.

Stuniverse: Is that what it came down to, do you think? That he could start immediately?

Stanley Baryla: I think so, yes. They didn't say as much, but clubs don't usually ask what backroom changes you want to make unless they're seriously considering offering you the job. I know you were very clear about not joining until the summer, but had they offered you the job but starting immediately, would you have taken it?

Stuniverse: No, I wouldn't. I want to finish this season with Celtic.

Stanley Baryla: There'll be other opportunities in the summer, I'm sure.

Stuniverse: Hopefully, yes. Thanks, Stan.

MARSEILLE APPOINT LAUREY

The Bhoys: Olympique De Marseille have this morning announced the appointment of former player Thierry Laurey as their new manager. Celtic manager, Stuniverse, confirmed he was talking to the Ligue 1 club about their managerial vacancy but was clear he didn't want to leave Celtic this season. Laurey is expected to start work at the Stade Orange Velodrome today, having said his goodbyes at Brest yesterday.

Shame about the Marseille job. Looked like they had a pretty congenial and realistic vision too.

Was there anything about Marseille or the French league that piqued your interest specifically, or was it just that the job happened to come up while you were thinking about greener pastures?

Yes, @Tajerio. When Marseille asked for my backroom changes, I thought I'd got the job. I've never been asked to do that, without being offered the job shortly afterwards. I guess OM weren't prepared to wait until the end of the season as their new manager started work immediately.

I had said that I wasn't going to apply for jobs until the summer but, when I saw the Marseille job become available, I changed my mind as, in my head, Marseille were a big club in France and seeing them 8th in Ligue 1 had me thinking there'd be a good project there to get behind. In real-life, Marseille are 2nd after 28 games and, on this save, they finished 3rd in 2019/20 and thereafter 11th, 15th, 7th and 7th. The challenge was one that interested me after two seasons of dominating Scottish domestic football with Celtic.

These are the leagues I have loaded:

Nations_Leagues_loaded.thumb.png.9ffa1466275271955c970353f226c810.png

I think my time in Scotland will be done by the summer as, domestically, it's not that challenging. Although I won't completely rule England out - never say never - I nearly always manage in England so I fancy managing somewhere else for a change. Italy and Spain are the two countries that appeal to me most, but I won't rule out Belgium, France, Germany, Holland or Portugal.

I've just started skimming through this today. This is where I got to - looking forward to getting through the rest of it. I must admit I got quite gripped getting to this point, even to the point of hoping Celtic nick a point to secure the league. I must be really missing Scottish football.

I've just started skimming through this today. This is where I got to - looking forward to getting through the rest of it. I must admit I got quite gripped getting to this point, even to the point of hoping Celtic nick a point to secure the league. I must be really missing Scottish football.

Thanks, @Sean1967. Welcome to the Adventure.

Stuniverse: It's no more than this squad of players deserve. They've been magnificent all season and this weekend we have the opportunity to win the Premier League in front of our own fans at Celtic Park.

The Bhoys: I know, as Celtic fans, we expect to win the league every season, but you still have to go out there and do it. I'm sure it's not as easy as you make it look. Congratulations on bringing the Premier League trophy back to Celtic Park again. How does it feel?

Stuniverse: Thank you. It's a fantastic feeling to be honest. I'm pleased for our supporters but I'm delighted for the players. They work incredibly hard on the training ground to achieve and maintain the standards we demand here at Celtic Park and it's all for days like this. To win trophies like we have today makes all the blood, sweat and tears worthwhile.

But we can't afford to ease off. That's the league title and the Betfred Cup in the trophy cabinet but we want to complete the treble and add the Scottish Cup as well.

Great way to win the league. At the end of the 2017/18 season we beat Rangers 5-0 to seal the title and it is one of the best games I've been to. It should have 8 or 9 in all honesty. This is turning out to be a very fascinating thread. It is a very believable manager trajectory.

Quite funny that Murty is Rangers manager again.

Yes, no better way to clinch a title than by beating your arch rivals convincingly.

Yes, I thought the same when I first saw Murty was in charge. On my save, Murty came in on 24/12/2019, after Gerrard was sacked, so he's been there 5 years and 85 days (as of game date 19/03/2025) and counting...

TO QUIT... OR NOT TO QUIT?

zzzz_Celtic_Stuniverse3.png.ca84cb2b11a2cfab40fc7f8de40369c0.png

Stanley Baryla (Stuniverse's agent): Hi Stuniverse, another good win against Motherwell. What can I do for you?

Stuniverse: Thank you, Stan. How's the job market looking currently?

Stanley Baryla: It's slow at the moment but I expect it'll get busier the closer we get to the end of the season. Right now, Atalanta (Italy) and Rio Ave (Portugal) are probably the only ones that might interest you. In terms of managers currently under pressure - real pressure, that is, not media speculation - are LOSC Lille (France), Leicester City (England), Lazio (Italy), Borussia Monchengladbach (Germany) and Twente (Holland) amongst others.

20250324_job_security_top-tiers.thumb.png.8da10738384d6a9031c410ea59c0b2b5.png

Stuniverse: Not interested in either of those. I'm thinking I may need to quit Celtic after the Scottish Cup Final.

Stanley Baryla: You're not in the Final yet.

Stuniverse: No, but let's be honest, if we don't beat St Johnstone then Celtic should sack me any way.

Stanley Baryla: [Laughs]. Are you definitely done at Celtic then?

Stuniverse: I think so, yes. We're 31 points clear of Rangers and looking good for a treble. In two seasons we've won two Premiership titles, two Betfred Cups, and hopefully we'll win the Scottish Cup in a few weeks time. The only real challenge is the European Champions Cup and the consolation EURO Cup but, as we found this season, we may only get a few games in Europe and then it's a long wait for the next season to come around again.

20250324_job_security_reputation.thumb.png.d2ce290df804735ade7a85bc50f4e208.png

Stanley Baryla: Well, if you're sure you don't want to be at Celtic next season, then quitting would make things easier in the short-term.

Stuniverse: Yes, I think so. Missing out on the Marseille job upset me more than I thought it would. In the short-term?

Stanley Baryla: Yes. You'll be immediately available and, as we know, Marseille couldn't afford the compensation Celtic wanted and you had to go pleading to the Board. If you quit, that's no longer an issue, and you're free to apply for any jobs you want without worrying about upsetting your bosses. I said short-term because it's also a risk.

Stuniverse: Risk?

Stanley Baryla: Well, yes. Apart from the obvious fact that you're not working, we basically have the summer to find you a job whilst your stock is high following your success at Celtic. Once the new season starts, your stock will erode the longer you're unemployed so, yes, we would need to find you a job in the summer.

Stuniverse: I agree.

Stanley Baryla: And, let's not forget, we have yet to receive an actual job offer from any club outside of Scotland and England so not being able to speak any other languages could prove problematic.

Stuniverse: Marseille didn't seem to mind.

Stanley Baryla: They didn't offer you the job and they have an American owner who does speak English.

Stuniverse: Good point. When do we need to decide?

Stanley Baryla: I'll put some feelers out but we need to know for definite by the time the season ends.

Stuniverse: Day after the Scottish Cup Final?

Stanley Baryla: Yes. Unless a job you're interested in becomes available sooner in which case we'll need to talk urgently.

Stuniverse: Works for me. Let's talk soon.
