SAMPDORIA'S OCTOBER FIXTURES

Blucerchiati Messaggero: After a disastrous start to the season, that has seen 15th placed Sampdoria pick up just one win and one draw from their opening six Serie A matches, Sampdoria face four more daunting Serie A fixtures in October, ending with the derby della Lanterna against Genoa.

Sampdoria start October away to 4th placed Atalanta, then play 12th placed Lecce at home, before travelling to 6th placed Udinese, and then finishing the month back home at Stadio Luigi Ferraris by entertaining 17th placed Genoa in the derby della Lanterna.

In ordinary seasons, Sampdoria supporters would consider these four winnable matches but this form is not an ordinary start to the season and, right now, does any Blucerchiati fan have any confidence in manager Stuniverse's ability to get Sampdoria winning again?

We don't!

After his success at Celtic, we were prepared to give Stuniverse the benefit of the doubt but doubt is fast turning into disgruntlement as the Board's decision to appoint a manager who can't speak Italian looks like backfiring big time.

Saccheggiato al mattino, verrai licenziato al mattino

The above translates to "Sacked in the morning, you're getting sacked in the morning."

Well it's fair to say the start to my Sampdoria managerial career has been a disaster. We've picked up four points from a possible 18 and I can't speak the lingo yet... not even basic Italian.

Clearly, the way I was playing at Celtic, just attack teams from the first whistle isn't going to work here at Sampdoria. So what will...?

Any ideas?

It's been a long time since I managed in Italy, so not sure I can give a specific comment there. I feel like the club went through a lot of changes, between manager, players, tactics so I'd suggest to try and stick it out - assuming the board gives you that much time of course...

I would consider slotting in a few friendlies with low level sides and see if that helps in building both morale, and some positive form. The international window between the Atalanta and Lecce games could allow you to lay at least two games, even if it means using the reserves based on players being away on international duty.

That's alright, @Johnny-Trotter, thanks for taking the time to comment.

That's all very true and, I guess, I need to be patient and have confidence in my managerial abilities. At the moment the Board are satisfied, my job security is showing as stable, I'm on a C+ both overall and for results, and the players are still with me.

Also, I think some of it is down to me. I got spoilt at Celtic; we could attack teams from the first whistle and, domestically, win comfortably. There was nothing in the Cagliari game, to be fair, very even, but I got increasingly frustrated that we hadn’t scored that I went more and more attacking from halftime onwards, and we got sucker-punched when I went very attacking near the end. Lost 0-1.

I’m thinking of going Balanced mentality, rather than the Attacking mentality we currently start with. I also think I need to resist the temptation, when the scores are level, to go more attacking and trying to force a goal. It is early days, and I haven’t worked out my best 11, or most balanced starting line-up yet.

I might just try that, @Johnny-Trotter. We have 11 players called up for international duty, make that 12 if Chancel Mbemba gets a DR Congo call-up... although I am planning on watching both Poland games to see how they play our want-away, highest paid player, Karol Linetty. I feel like we're not getting the most out of him.

I was going to say I’ve actually never managed in Italy so I can’t really help, but I suppose going from being a top team in the league (Celtic) Down to a ‘mid-table’ team in Italy would mean a complete change in mentality.
Although having noticed that both possession lost and assists conceded are mostly down your left side, I would be asking questions of the full back.

Linetty for me is the engine of a midfield three. He's not your holder but he's not the creative force or the major goalscorer either. I also agree with @coady that you might be better off trying to counterattack with your front 4 or 5, and leaving the rest to sit back and provide a solid foundation.

I like a 4-3-3 for that personally, because I think it works well with the split block for a more front-foot counterattack. You give your front three plus two of your midfielders PIs to close down aggressively, and the rest default to a calmer overall setting. So you can start counterattacks by winning the ball with quick pressure in the other end, or, if they get past you there, by turning them over in your end once they've committed bodies forward. That's how I understand it at least.

What tactical approaches did you use with Celtic in Europe? That's probably closer to your current underdog status than your usual dominance of divisions.

Thanks, @enigmatic. That’s a very good point and one I hadn’t really considered. Unfortunately, I never really found a system in Europe for Celtic I was happy with. I kept changing things around as we went, especially in the second season at Celtic, last season, when Man Utd and PSG hammered us in every game it seemed.

I always find fluid counter attack better outside of England, no full backs on attack, let the front 4/5 counter teams!

That's a good spot, @Mrlee.1986. I bought Antonino Gallo with a view to him being my left-back, but he dropped out the team with a bruised shoulder and Jairo Riedewald came in and has pretty much kept him out ever since, mainly because a very impressive display against Serie C/C Juve Stabia remains in my mind. Maybe it's time to go back to Gallo.

Ricardo Esgaio, my back-up right-back, also provides cover a left-back now that Antonio Barreca has been sold to Charleroi.

Karol Linetty is a real enigma. He's been at Sampdoria since July 2016, is our highest paid player on £99K p/w, wants away to play in European competition but nobody is interested in him, nobody has made a bid for him despite our best efforts, and I've been playing him in his preferred box-to-box role and he's averaging 6.57 for me whilst averaging 7.20 for Poland. Is he under-performing for me because he wants away or because I'm not using him right?

I like 4-3-3 too, although with a DM. I tried it for a bit in one of the recent games but it didn't have much effect but, then, we were struggling in the game at the time. Maybe if I played it from the start - it is one of three formations we're training the players in.

But I also like the balance and solidity of our current 4-2-3-1 system, albeit we've conceded 12 goals in six Serie A games, including five in one match against Inter.

Like @coady and @Tajerio said I think counterattacking is the way to go as you won't be able to out attack the big Italian teams.

Thanks, @JaytheGreat. It's certainly looking like the big Italian teams are going to be the equivalent of Celtic versus Ma Utd and PSG last season.

Blucerchiati Messaggero: All the pundits expected Milan to win comfortably today but you defied the odds and came away from the San Siro stadium with a draw.

Stuniverse: Si. Grazie. Milano are good team... we knew we had to make it difficult for them... and we did. We play well defensively... and when they scored... the players show character and spirit to fight their way back into the game. I thought it no more than we deserve for the hard work and effort the players put in today.

Stuniverse (Sampdoria manager):

SA13_Milan_post-stuniverse.thumb.png.e19982838a6c21942035831f3e7072c9.png

Blucerchiati Messaggero:  You sprung something of a surprise today with your 4-1-2-3 formation. What was the thinking behind that?

Stuniverse: It one of a few systems we've worked on in training. We changed to it a couple of times in other games and I liked what I saw when used second-half against Roma. We felt we had nothing to lose against Milano and decided to spring a surprise. I very happy how we looked out there and we got good result. I thought we deserve it.
