PREVIEW: England v Italy

European Nations League Group 3 (3)

Wembley Way: It's funny how things work out, isn't it? You've only been manager of England a brief time and already you're squaring up to your previous employers Italy?

Stuniverse: Yes, it is, isn't it? Football often works like that. As Jimmy Greaves used to say, "it's a funny old game."

Wembley Way: Are you still bitter about being sacked after reaching the European Championship Semi-Final, or are you over that now?

Stuniverse: I wouldn't say I was 'bitter' as such, but I did think the sacking was extremely harsh and it did take me by surprise. It would be very satisfying to get one over Italy but, as I know all too well, Italy are a very good team with some quality players. It will be a difficult challenge for us tonight.

I'm planning to start my FM21 save in the first week of December and the aim is to conclude Stuniverse's FM20 Adventure by then. If not, this save will continue alongside my new FM21 save until it reaches THE END.

Once again, a sincere thank you to everybody who's followed my FM20 Adventure on here, with an extra special thank you to everybody who's reached out and interacted with me by liking posts, commenting on threads, and exchanging direct messages. It really is that interaction that  keeps me going because, without it, I might as well do a personal save just for myself...

Always enjoy your threads bud, will continue to follow. Have you started off on FM21 already?

Also, Rashford seems to have retired very early!

Really enjoyed this thread - TBH I'd stopped reading over last couple weeks as I thought you'd be winding down with the Beta Release.

Anyway I shall continue to watch Englands exploits in the World Cup

Thanks, @TheMadMonkTo be honest, when Italy sacked me (after reaching the semi-finals, what were they thinking?) I did consider ending the save there. I’ve played the FM21 Beta a bit and I love it. But I’d kind of set my heart on managing in the World Cup so when I saw the England job had become available I thought: you know what, if I get the England job I’ll carry on, otherwise I’ll end the save.

As to what I personally liked in the thread - the PRO's for me were

  • your interactions with your 'agent' and the gentle humor you'd fit into the conversations.
  • the match footage and commentary

I’m glad you enjoyed the interaction with my agent. I wish I’d thought of the character earlier but he’ll definitely have a starring role in my FM21 Career Update.

As for next year - we'll your own local football is in a very poor state at the minute - and not just your own (very well researched :) ) County team, but just across the border Burton Albion are heading in the wrong direction maybe you could resurrect the Brewers fortunes - post Clough jnr. ? - and spend a career journeying around the East Midlands (not quite as glamorous as managing "l'azzurri" ... )

Or maybe try and better some Icon manager - starting off in the same position (League and similar level of team) they where and seeing what you can achieve over a similar career span ?

Thanks for your kind words about the Derby County research in FM. I appreciate that. Of course, I will be doing a Derby County save on FM21 but whether it will be public or private I haven’t decided. My Derby saves usually only last a couple of seasons because once the squad no longer resembles the current Rams squad then I lose interest...

I don’t know if I’ve mentioned at all but I’m Burton-on-Trent born and bred so the Brewers are my second team. Their rise from lowly Tier goodness-only-knows-how-low has been incredible but, sadly, they appear to be on a downward trajectory now. I imagine Burton Albion will be a tough job on FM21.

I kind of feel like my time in Italy, with Sampdoria, was cut short... so I'm considering a journeyman type save starting in the lowest playable Italian league.

Really enjoyed reading. I'd say what you enjoy the most as if you enjoy it that will come across.

Thank you, @coady, glad you've enjoyed the save. I appreciate your kind words. Right now I'm considering two possible saves:

1 - As I mentioned in the post above, a journeyman type save starting in Italy in the lowest playable league (as I felt I had more to offer Italy and Serie A and my time in club football in Italy was cut short on this save)

2 - As I don't speak any other languages in real life, loading up all the English speaking leagues and doing a journeyman type save across those nations, hopefully starting in countries I've not managed in before, has a lot of appeal, particularly in the early seasons of the save, but there's a couple of downsides for me:

  • I've already done Scotland, a country that would appeal later on in the save, very successfully on this save
  • Another potential long-term destination would be the MLS in USA, an incredibly complicated Nation and rules to manage in and I'm not sure I fancy that
  • The ultimate, long-term destination would be England but (and I may have mentioned this on one of my Career Updates at one point) but because I know English football so well, I tend to lose interest when the newgens kick-in and squads no longer resemble what they do in real-life (something that didn't bother me on this save because I don't know very much about Scottish and Italian football)

3 - I will be doing a short-term Derby County save, but I'm not sure if a one, two, probably three seasons at the most save would interest you all

4 - I'm very much open to suggestions as I haven't decide what my main FM21 save will be yet.

Many thanks, @karanhsingh, that's very kind of you to say. I have had a  go with the FM21 Beta but I haven't gone beyond the end of pre-season yet. I love it, to be honest. It's quicker, slicker, more immersive, and you won't believe how fast it saves.

Yes, Rashford is only 30 so, yes, he has retired from international football early. My scouts tell me he'd be England's best left-winger and would be right up there with our best strikers. I'm going to harass him every time I'm picking a National squad until he agrees to play for England again.

Good Luck with the 3 Lions!

I love the tactical insight you give before the matches. I guess it's nice to know HOW the manager are building the team tactically.

Cheers,
Bitner

Thank you, @Bitner. I’m not doing that so much now, relying more on the screenshots as I want to get to the end of the save but, yes, I will definitely be returning to that with my FM21 save.

INJURY CONCERNS FOR ENGLAND

Wembley Way: England manager Stuniverse is facing a number of injury concerns ahead of the European Nations Group 3 clashes with Denmark and Italy. The most pressing concern is at right-back where both Trent Alexander-Arnold and Aaron Wan-Bissaka are both out injured.

PREVIEW: England v Denmark

European Nations Group 3 (5)

20281110_England_v_Denmark_preview.thumb.png.e3e10e1c1ec520926329ec5dea0a24ac.png

Wembley Way:  A win against Denmark will guarantee you top the Group and qualify for the European Nations League Semi-Final with a game to go. Are you confident?

Stuniverse: Yes. We're confident, but we're not over-confident. Denmark are a good team and we need to be at our best to get the result we're looking for.

Wembley Way: You had a few injury problems in the build-up to this game, particularly at right-back. How are things looking?

Stuniverse: Trent Alexander-Arnold has had problems with pulled knee ligaments. He should be ok but we're going to save him for the Italy game if we can. Aaron Wan-Bissaka is suffering from a hernia so he missed out on the squad. That allowed us to call up Damian Teale and either Damian or Fikayo Tomori will start at right-back against Denmark.

PREVIEW: Italy v England

European Nations League Group 3 (6)

20281114_Italy_v_England_preview.thumb.png.720b6251591fd50e9e11d6e27b838a31.png

Wembley Way: Congratulations on winning the Group and qualifying for the semi-finals.

Stuniverse: Thank you. The players have worked ever so hard, taken on board what we've asked them to do, and they deserve all the credit.

Wembley Way: Hudson-Odoi misses this game through suspension. Does that concern you?

Stuniverse: Obviously we'd like Callum to be playing but, look, we play six games in the Group and two yellow cards means a suspension. It's hard to avoid picking up suspensions, to be fair. We put Callum on the bench against Denmark to protect him, but Bukayo Saka got injured, Callum came on, and picked up his second yellow. At least he gets his suspension out of the way and is eligible for the semi-final.

Wembley Way: You have seven more players on a yellow card, one more yellow card away from a suspension. With that in mind, how do you approach this game?

Stuniverse: I think we take no risks We've already won the Group and we need as many of our players eligible for the semi-final as possible. I want to win the game, and not just because it's against Italy, but on this occasion, squad management is more important. If we can avoid it, we won't be using any player who's on a yellow card.

Wembley Way: After the harsh way Italy treated you, sacking you after reaching the European Championship semi-final, are you looking to get one over them tonight?

Stuniverse: I think we've already done that to be honest. We beat Italy 3-1 at Wembley, have won the Group and qualified, ending Italy's run of lifting the European Nations League trophy on two consecutive occasions, the second one with me in charge. Seriously it's water-under-the-bridge now. I'm looking forward to going back to Rome and the Olimpico Stadium, saying hello to players and staff I worked with and have a lot of time for, but don't get me wrong, this is a game I want to win.
