PREVIEW: Georgia v England

World Cup Qualifying Group 6 (7)

Wembley Way: With two games left to play in the Group, you've put yourselves in a position where a draw at bottom placed Georgia tonight will see your Three Lions qualify for next year's World Cup. Can you get over the line?

Stuniverse: We hope so and that's what we intend to do. The players have been magnificent all campaign, winning every qualifying game in the Group so far, and one more sees us on the plane to Spain next year. Even though a draw will be enough, we're going out there to try and win the game and I have every confidence that the players will deliver for England.

PREVIEW: England v Norway

World Cup Qualifying Group 6 (8)

Wembley Way: Congratulations on qualifying for the World Cup with a match to spare.

Stuniverse: Thank you. The players have been superb all campaign and have won every game in the Group so far. We'd love nothing more than to reward our fantastic supporters with another win at Wembley.

Wembley Way: Gomez is suspended for this match and you have another seven players who are one yellow away from suspension. Does that concern you?

Stuniverse: The rules are the same for everybody - two yellow cards and you miss a match. That doesn't leave much leeway. To be fair, I think we've done well to reach the final game of the Group with so few suspensions. It is something we're aware of and our team selection will reflect that as, we think, it's sensible to protect the players who are one more card away from a suspension.

STUNIVERSE LOOKS FORWARD TO THE WORLD CUP

use.thumb.png.3a94a41730def3b707d456214c12556f.png

Wembley Way: Congratulations again on wining your Group and qualifying for the World Cup.

Stuniverse: Thank you. It's my players who deserve the credit though, not me, they're the ones who put the hard work in and thoroughly deserve the plaudits coming their way.

use.png.05caab19032d42b3520ab7befbea6fd5.png

use.png.ebf0e8f6b729aa9b1c171761c182dc2f.png

Wembley Way: You qualified rather comfortably in the end by winning every match. Were you that good or was it a fairly easy Group?

Stuniverse: To say it was an easy Group is being disingenuous to the other teams in Group 6. Apart from us, Serbia and Norway only dropped points against each other so they were two strong teams. To be fair, tough, when we saw the draw we were pleased as we thought it was a Group we should qualify from. And we did. The players were magnificent and a goal difference of plus 35 from eight matches is rather impressive.

use.png.5f8647541a38860fb48a2083dfc9139c.png

Wembley Way: The only blip so far in your reign as England manager was the two European Nations League defeats. We saw a change of approach after those two games, when you got back to World Cup Qualifying action. Can you explain your thinking?

Stuniverse: Sure. We were disappointed to lose to France and Belgium, particularly after we took the lead in both games. I'd won the European Nations League with Italy, and we'd knocked the holders Italy out in the qualifying Group. We were confident England could go on and win the Nations League but, unfortunately, that wasn't to be. Our style, up to that point, had been quite direct and, as such, we were giving possession away quite a lot. In the qualifying Group that hadn't caused us any real issues, even against Italy, but against France and Belgium we struggled to get the ball back. The Belgium game was especially galling as we were 2-0 up and looking comfortable.

So we looked again at our direct approach. I think there's a time and a place for it but, maybe, against the top Nations, having our goalkeeper being direct meant we were conceding too much possession. So we changed and started playing out from the back and, so far, it's worked pretty well.

use.png.3de36446b1a9186d9b3a74ac5c1073f9.png

Wembley Way: You've drawn Algeria and Costa Rica in Group E of the 2030 World Cup. What are your thoughts on the draw?

Stuniverse: Well it puts us up against an African and a North American Nation and that'll be interesting to see how we get on against different footballing styles. We've arranged a couple of friendlies against Morocco and Mexico to help us prepare. With the top two qualifying for the second round, we're confident of progressing to the second round. We won't underestimate Algeria and Costa Rica but we want to lay down a marker by winning the Group.

use.thumb.png.e62b354bde3ee0740e85a037cee5d4ff.png

Wembley Way: How far do you think you can go?

Stuniverse: Look, I'm not going to stand here and tell you we're going to win the World Cup because that would be foolhardy. We were one of sixteen Nations seeded in Pot 1 for the draw and I bet you all of those Nations, plus a few from Pot 2, believe they can win this World Cup. I'm no different, we're no different, we believe we can win it. I have total confidence and faith in my players and I know they have the ability to win the World Cup but, doing it and making it happen. That's the most difficult thing in football.

use.png.6b5eecfc39b16a427523d2f13898bd59.png

Wembley Way: Group E have been paired with Group F for the second-round with the winners of one Group playing the runners up from the other Group. That could be Italy again.

Stuniverse: It could, but I think Italy will win Group F so, if we achieve our expectation of winning Group E, we'll avoid each other in the second round. But we're getting ahead of ourselves and we can't afford to do that. We have to play Costa Rica first, and then Algeria. We'll worry about our second round opponents wen we get there.

But the second round, with 32 teams in, effectively, a knockout tournament shows just how difficult and demanding it will be. And once you reach that stage, one bad game and you're on the plane home.

20291214_pre-WC_Stuniverse.png.291b6908f6c6b3ddc89673c65d8c472f.png

Wembley Way: Good luck.

Stuniverse: Thank you. England won the World Cup in 1966, as you know, and we'd love to win it again for England.

SAVE UPDATE

use.png.a76af78f01a07c3c41625aec847b3b43.png

Apologies, it's taking a while to get to the next game because I don't like holidaying as I miss things and, the last time I went on holiday, I got sacked by Italy early on. It was only good fortune that I spotted it, cancelled my holiday, and was in time to apply for the England job. Otherwise, by the time my holiday was over, the England job vacancy would have been filled, and I'd have missed out on this wonderful opportunity to lead my Nation into the 2030 World Cup in Spain.

use.png.5c9e092cba10b669e49d3a281e54413f.png

Once I get to the World Cup, I'm planning to savour it by bringing back the interviews both pre-game and post-game and enjoying each World Cup game for what it is. I plan to do one session for the two friendly games, then on another day the Costa Rica game, then on a different day the Algeria game and then, if we qualify for the knockout stage, each subsequent game on a different day, until our World Cup dream ends in either victory or defeat.

I've also started my FM21 Adventure which is progressing slowly, as I prioritise finishing this save, and then it will speed up. If you're interested, you'll find Stuniverse's FM21 Adventure here:

Thank you.

PREVIEW: England v Morocco

International friendly

England_v_Morocco_pre0.thumb.png.8208b7dd10248916b65d51baf93b4158.png

Wembley Way: I'm sensing some frustration about the scheduling of these friendly matches.

Stuniverse: Yes. We're given a specific time window when we can arrange International friendlies. Yet, we have to name a preliminary World Cup squad and confirm the final squad, before we can play any friendly games. It would be more helpful if we could play the friendly games between naming the preliminary squad and confirming the final squad.

Wembley Way: Are you happy with the squad you've been able to name and are there any injury concerns?

Stuniverse: Yes, I'm very happy. The squad is pretty much the core squad that's played for me during my time as England manager and they were magnificent in the Qualifying Group to make sure England reached the World Cup. Of course, you worry about players picking up injuries during the run-in of the club football season. Everybody came through that fit and healthy. Ironically though, Phil Foden (twisted ankle) and Trent Alexander-Arnold (hamstring strain) have picked up injuries in training and may miss the opening World Cup Group games.

injury2.png.aaf7a57fd3f0adc72c685e5229e12fca.png

Wembley Way: How will you approach these friendly matches against Morocco and Mexico?

Stuniverse: We picked these two Nations to help our preparations for the World Cup Group games against Algeria and Costa Rica. We've named a 23-man squad and we'll look to give as many players as possible playing time in these two games.

England 4-0 Morocco

International friendly

England_4-0_Morocco_post1.png.5429b9067eb7668036a75c04a7bba3ad.png

Wembley Way: A very good win. Is that how you saw it?

Stuniverse: Yes. I would agree with you. I thought we defended very well and, creatively, we looked a threat going forward all game and caused Morocco plenty of problems.

Wembley Way: A brace for Hudson-Odoi and Nketiah. How good were they?

Stuniverse: I don't like singling out individuals, as you know, but yes, Callum Hudson-Odoi and Eddie Nketiah were outstanding today, it's a shame neither of them could grab the hat-trick their performances deserved.

Wembley Way: You only made two substitutions today.

Stuniverse: Yes, and that was one more than we'd planned on. With two friendly games before the World Cup, we'd planned to give players 90 minutes either today, or against Mexico on Friday. Changing the goalkeeper at half-time we'd agreed before kick-off. With three goalkeepers, and only two friendly games, Arthur and Craig Butler were going to have 45 minutes each today so that, hopefully, Angus Gunn can play the full game against Mexico. We'd hoped to get 90 minutes into Luke Legg's legs (parden the pun), but he was looking very tired in the second half and we replaced him with Tom Staley on 73 minutes.

Wembley Way: Are you ready for the World Cup finals?

Stuniverse: We still have one more friendly to play. Ask me again after the Mexico game.

PREVIEW: England v Mexico

International friendly

England_v_Mexico_pre0.thumb.png.da196cd53917252516c05d6b06b505cc.png

Wembley Way: What are you expecting from the match against Mexico today?

Stuniverse: Mexico are ranked 7th in the World, two places above us, so we're expecting a difficult challenge today. It'll be a different style of football to what we faced against Morocco (31st) and I'm very keen to see how the players cope with it. This is our last friendly game, before the opening World Cup Group game against Costa Rica in a week's time so it's the last chance for the players to show me why they should be selected against Costa Rica.

Wembley Way: Do have a team in mind for the Costa Rica match?

Stuniverse: I have a team in mind, yes, but it's not set in stone. I have a great squad, with great options in every position, and nobody is guaranteed their place in starting-11. It's all up for grabs still, very much so.

Wembley Way: How are the injuries looking?

Stuniverse: Our medical team have been working very hard with Trent Alexander-Arnold (hamstring strain) and Phil Foden (twisted ankle). They both look doubtful for the Costa Rica game a week today. They stand more chance of being available for the Algeria game, eight days after the opening Group game, but even the Algeria game may be too soon for them.

England 2-1 Mexico

International friendly

England_2-1_Mexico_post1.png.43682ef5f4745296e43fa30b8b421a63.png

Wembley Way: You were full of praise for Mexico ahead of kick-off. How do you feel now after narrowly edging the win?

Stuniverse: I'm delighted. The whole squad are buzzing with the way we played, particularly the way we responded to Mexico's late equaliser. Football is a game of small margins, even more so at the top end of International football, and we saw that tonight. It was a very tight game, Mexico pushed us all the way, but we ended up victorious. It doesn't mean anything, it's a friendly, not a World Cup game, but it does give us confidence. Mexico, like us, will feel they can win the World Cup so to get the win tonight, against a very good Mexican team, gives us confidence going into the World Cup tournament.

Wembley Way: It must've been a real kick in the teeth to concede an equaliser with barely 10 minutes to go.

Stuniverse: It's never nice to concede goals, but all teams concede goals, and you have to give Mexico credit, it was a very well worked move. Obviously, there's some things we could've done better defensively, which we'll work on, but whenever you concede you'll find something you could've done better. If this had been a World Cup game, I would've freshened things up a bit with some fresh legs and maybe, just maybe, that might've helped us score a second goal or keep a clean sheet.

What pleased me the most, was the way the team responded out there. Heads didn't drop, they didn't panic, they kept going, continued to take the game to Mexico, and found a way to score a second goal and win the game.

Wembley Way: Mexico's manager, Ignacio Ambriz, claims it was never a penalty.

Stuniverse: Ignacio can say whatever he likes. I saw two hands in the back, a blatant push, our man goes down, the referee awards the penalty and brandishes a yellow card. The referee was in  no doubt and nether was I. As clear a penalty as you're going to see.

Wembley Way: He's also unhappy that two of his players picked up injuries.

Stuniverse: I can understand that. It's never nice to lose players through injury. But there was no malice or intention to hurt the opposition on our part. My players play the game hard, but fair. Unfortunately in football, players sometimes get injured, but I can assure Ignacio we didn't set out to hurt his players.

Wembley Way: A week today, you play your opening World Cup Group game against Cosa Rica. Are you ready?

Stuniverse: I'd be happier if I had a fully fit squad to choose from but, yes, we're ready. We're confident, we've won our last eight games, and we're determined to give a good account of ourselves and make the country proud.

Wembley Way: Good luck.

Stuniverse: Thank you.

England_v_CostaRica_preStuniverse.png.5b184ee7714ef3f4659f3c3eccb45937.png

Wembley Way: The 2020 World Cup is finally here. How does it feel?

Stuniverse: I won't lie, it's a wonderful feeling. For me, personally, managing the country of my birth's National team in the World Cup finals is the pinnacle of my career. It doesn't get any better than this. And for the players, they're buzzing just being here. The World Cup is the ultimate stage for a football player and, for the older players in the squad, they realise this may well be their last ever World Cup as a player. We're determined to perform to our best and do the Nation proud.

Wembley Way: Are the players confident they can emulate the boys of '66? The likes of Gordon Banks, Bobby Moore, Nobby Stiles, the Charlton brothers, Martin Peters, Geoff Hurst and the rest of England's only World Cup winning team? Well, in football any way.

Stuniverse: Of course, I'd be lying if I said any different. We're human, it wouldn't be natural if we hadn't thought about it and dreamt about it. But we have to try and put that out of our minds. We need to focus. We need to be determined about the task in hand and, and you won't like me saying this because it's a cliche, but it's a cliche for a reason, we have to take things one game at a time.

Can we win it? Yes, of course we can. We have some great players and I believe in them, but we're also one of about 16 Nations here who believe they can win the World Cup, but only one Nation will lift the Jules Rimet trophy.

Ultimately, 32 Nations will emerge from the Group stages into a knockout tournament and in knockout football, anything can happen. I've seen second division Sunderland, beat first division, Premier league as it's called now, Leeds United in the FA Cup Final. I've seen unfancied Greece win the European Championships. You just never know.

Take ourselves, we've lost recently to Belgium who are ranked below us, and beaten Mexico who are ranked above us. Anything can happen in football.

Wembley Way: How are the injuries looking?

Stuniverse: Trent Alexander-Arnold (hamstring strain) and Phil Foden (twisted ankle) won't play today. Everybody else is available for selection.

Wembley Way: Good luck to you and your players.

Stuniverse: Thank you.

Wembley Way: Congratulations on a great win to open your World Cup campaign.

Stuniverse: Thank you. I thought the players were magnificent tonight and we thoroughly deserved the victory.

Wembley Way: You had to be patient but, when you broke through, how surprised were you to blitz four goals in six minutes?

Stuniverse: Very surprised. Costa Rica were making life difficult for us and, if it hadn't been for a world class save from Angus Gunn, we would've been a goal down after only two minutes. It would have been a very different game if we'd fallen behind. When we broke the deadlock, through a fine Eddie Nketiah goal, I was relieved to have got the breakthrough as it was a tight game up to that point. The goal seemed to knock the stuffing out of Costa Rica and the flood gates opened for us.

Wembley Way: With only three Nations in the Group, and the top two progressing to the second round, this 5-0 win as good as puts you through, doesn't it?

Stuniverse: Let's not get ahead of ourselves. Although, if Algeria beat Coasta Rica on Tuesday, that'll secure our progress to the knockout stage before we face Algeria a week tomorrow.

Wembley Way: Will Alexander-Arnold and Foden be fit for the Algeria game?

Stuniverse: We probably won't risk either of them, although it'll be touch-and-go for both of them, they could be fit enough to be named as substitutes.

WORLD CUP UPDATE

Wembley Way: If our maths are correct, anything other than a Costa Rica win over Algeria tonight will see England through to the second round.

With Italy guaranteed to top Group F after their 4-0 victory over Ghana, England will want to make sure they win Group E to avoid being paired with Italy in the second round.

ENGLAND IN WORLD CUP KNOCKOUT

Wembley Way: England are through to the second round of the World Cup after Algeria's 3-0 win over Costa Rica saw Costa Rica eliminated.

England now face a head-to-head with Algeria on Saturday to see who finishes top of the Group and avoids Italy in the second round. Italy have already won Group F and will meet the runner-up of Group E in the next round. The winner of Group E, either England or Algeria, will face either Ecuador or Ghana in the next round.

Wembley Way: Your better goal difference means a draw against Algeria today will see you win the Group and avoid Italy in the next round.

Stuniverse: Our aim is to win every game we play and today is no different. I don't believe in playing for a draw so we'll be looking to win the Group by beating Algeria. I'm sure Algeria will also want to avoid Italy and will be looking to win the game as well. Hopefully, it'll be a good, entertaining game with us coming out on top.

Wembley Way: Isn't there a part of you that wants to knock Italy out at this early stage after the way they treated you?

Stuniverse: I'm still amazed that the Italian F.A. sacked me after reaching the European Championship semi-finals but, looking back, they did me a favour. If they hadn't dispensed with my services, I'd be managing Italy in this World Cup and not the Country of my birth. It's an honour and a privilege to be here, leading my Nation's football team in a World Cup. Any game for me, against Italy, is special, of course it is, but this isn't about me, it's about what's best for the team and winning the Group, keeping our momentum going, and playing the runners-up to Italy would be best for England.

Wembley Way: Are we likely to see Alexander-Arnold or Foden against Algeria?

Stuniverse: Phil Foden (twisted ankle) is back in training and he's likely to be on the bench. If we need Phil, he's fit to play. Trent Alexander-Arnold (hamstring strain) is probably a couple of days away from a return to full training. We will be naming Trent on the bench but it's highly unlikely we'll risk playing him.
