We have continued our great form this month as we rack up another 3 wins. We are becoming pretty good at winning games 1 or 2 nil, which is completely fine with me, better to build a team on a steely defence. This month we beat the only other unbeaten side in the league and current champions Foulad. Our nearest challengers Esteghalal are right behind us, so it is tight at the top of the table, and a bad month could see us drop like a stone.

It's been another short and good month for us as we won the Tabriz derby handsomely against Tractor Sazi, and then got a good point against Persepolis. They are probably the best side in Iran, so I will take a point against them. The game against Paykan looked like on paper it should be a routine win, but it ended up being a mad game. We took the lead, and then the came back to lead at half time 2-1. We struck in the second half and got 3 goals without response. Going into the final minutes Paykan found two goals to level it, and in injury time we got two as well to win it and make the points safe. We win it 6-4 in the end. We lead the league but Esteghlal can overtake with a win in their game in hand.

The result against Naft MIS was a little disappointing as we were leading that game and then threw it away. We did get beat Zob Ahan however. We are 1 point behind Esteghlal at the moment, it is tight at the top of the table and the games are going to start coming thicker and faster now, as we pass the mid way stage of the season. It has been very encouraging that we have kept up a title challenge this long.

This was going to be a crunch month for us as we faced league title rivals Esteghlal at their ground, and a loss there would really give them a huge advantage in the title race. We were perfect going into the game with Esteghlal winning all our games, but so were they. Someone had to blink first and it was them as we produced the performance of the season to beat them 4-1 in their own backyard. With 10 games to go I am beginning to believe we can do this, but any kind of slip up and we let them back in. Also we currently sit 20 games into the season and still have not lost, surely we can't go undefeated again?

The title run in is fully on the go and we had a good month, if not perfect as we could not find a way through city rivals Mashin-Sazi and drew 0-0, Esteghlal also drew a game in the month so everything is as it started. We do have the advantage of a vastly superior goal difference which may still play a major role in the end. We do have some tough games down the track to come such as Foulad, Persepolis and bitter rivals Tractor Sazi. I am getting a little nervous that we might end up blowing this.

It has been an interesting month in this topsy turvy Iranian title race. We looked good, until we lost our first game of the season against rivals Tractor Sazi, and that out Esteghlal above us, however they then had to play Persepolis and they could only manage a 0-0 draw, which with our win against Paykan put us back on top of the league. There are two games to go and it can go either way. Esteghlal have what I would consider to be to pretty easy final games away to Mashin-Sazi and at home to already relegated Baadraan on the final day. We face two away games firstly away at Persepolis and then away at Naft MIS. So realistically I would say we need to win both games to win the league here, and so I think Esteghlal are favourites for it. It is going to down to the wire. Mathematically Tractor Sazi can still win the league but they would have to make up 25 goals or so on us so that they are out of it for all intents and purposes.

Just as I suspected going to the Azadi Stadium to play Persepolis was always going to be very difficult, especially knowing that we likely would need to win, and in the end we lost 2-1, Esteghlal beat Mashin Sazi and it meant we needed a miracle for already relegated; 9 points all season Baadraan to somehow get something against them and they didn't, in fact they lost 5-0. We managed to get the win to keep the title within two points but Esteghlal are Iranian champions and we have to settle for a runners up spot and Asian football next year. We ran them so close, but in the end I thought we might end up blowing it and we did. Our 72 points would have won the league many other season but not this one. But we will be back and looking to make up for this year next year.

NB: For any of you wondering who may know a little about Iranian football. There is a domestic cup competition called the Hafzi Cup, but it is bugged in this database, where only 2nd Division sides participate in it, so that will be off the table while we are in Iran.

We had a tough start to this month as we faced our rapidly growing rivals Esteghlal at their ground and narrowly lost 2-1, but the rest of the month we were great and made in the most part for the loss, by winning the other 4 games. Esteghlal already have an advantage over us this season as they have started with 6 wins from 6. We must make sure we lose no further ground on them.

It's been a pretty decent month, as we get two wins and a draw, although Esteghlal are relentless, they finally drew a game but they don't look like they are going to let up any time soon. We are in touching distance though so if they start messing up, we are in prime position to capitalise.

We really did not deserve to lose to Persepolis, we were the better team, but did not take our chances and were punished. That loss really gives Esteghlal an early advantage in this league season over us. We did win our other two games, including the away derby at Tractor Sazi, which was very nice. Hopefully sometime this season Esteghlal suffer a little bit of a drop off, but at the moment, you just can't see where it is coming from. They are in really good form.

A fantastic month for us and some great performances as we faced specifically two very hard games in Foulad away and Esteghlal at home and we came right through both them, as we beat Foulas and then Esteghlal. This now puts us two points clear at the top of the table. We will have to work very hard to stay there now.

It's been a pretty good month but we really bottled the game against Paykan. We led 2-0 and we just allowed them into the game and ended up almost losing, getting a late goal to draw the game. The other games went well. There have been a few or the young Iranian guys away on international duty, which has not helped us much. We are 5 points clear in the league but Esteghlal have a game in hand and could cut it to 2 points.

The board went above our head and let Rahimpour leave with about an hour left of the deadline, which basically left us unable to get anyone in. We have recalled Agheai from loan as we might need him to cover, we are little bare bones now at the back on Iranians, and that is important because we are limited to 5 foreigners in the starting 11. We did bring a new signing, he is below:-

We have been excellent this month, although it has been tight in the league with two 1-0 wins and a 2-0. Those wins have now allowed us to open up a small gap to Esteghlal with 6 games to go in the league season of 4 points, but we still have some extremely hard games to come such as Persepolis away so we really can't take anything for granted at this stage. The AFC Champions League has kicked off; it runs in between Iranian seasons, so it will only finish next season if we manage to get through the group stage. Our group features Indian side Bengaluru, Saudi side Al-Shabab and Al-Duhail of Qatar. The restrictive registration rules regarding foreign players mean that our Champions League team is way worse than our Iranian league side, however we have made the first right step in beating Bengaluru at home in our first group game 4-2.

This Iranian title is going to go right down to the wire, we lost at Persepolis, a place where we seemingly can have nothing go our way. We always seem to play better than Persepolis and lose, and it happened again 1-0. We did win our other game so we are still on top of the league but the gap is now one point, our margin for any kind of error is gone. In the Champions League it is going very well, as we get a creditable draw away to Al Shabab and then beat Al Duhail in Qatar 5-0, to lead the group and it is looking very much like we should be making it to the next stage of the Champions League.

We are just about holding our **** together in the league as we squeak past Tractor Sazi, to do the double over our rival this season. We found it easier against Zob Ahan as we won out 4-1. We are two games away from the league title, we have Foulad at home which will be very tough and Naft MIS away, which will be equally tough I think. Esteghlal have not skipped a beat and are still 1 point behind us, leaving us needing to win both games. They will play Sepahan away which won't be a cakewalk and then Persepolis at home, which in theory should be hard, but the home advantage will give them a big edge. There may be more chance this year that someone will do us a favour, but I wouldn't count on it. In the Champions League it has been pretty much plane sailing as we beat Bengaluru in India 4-1 and then got another 0-0 draw against Al Shabab, this gives us control of the group and since we face Al Duhail at home in the final game we should really win the group now I would expect.

Well what drama to end the Iranian season. We played first in the league and faced a very tough test against Foulad, one which we failed as we dropped points with a 1-1 draw, and handed the title to Esteghlal for the taking. They played the next day against Sepahan, but they were away from home, and they choked, unable to find the net as the game finished 0-0. So it came down to the final game of the season, we were away to Naft MIS, Esteghlal hosted Persepolis. It was in our hands, but any slip up and Esteghlal could win it but they would have to beat the third placed team in Persepolis. In the end the first solution worked, as we really didn't give Naft MIS who had nothing left to play for a chance as we smashed them 4-0 to at the second time of asking lift the Iranian Pro League title. It would not have mattered anyway as Esteghlal failed to beat the Persepolis, the game ending in a draw. We had finally done it, we had capture the first title for Gostaresh. The season was not yet over, because we had the small matter of the Champions League to contend. We played out the final game of the group earlier in the month winning 2-0 against Qatari side Al Duhail to win the group. This put us up against Al Hilal of Saudi Arabia. Actually the qualifiers from the our side of the draw were all Saudi and Iranian, showing how powerful these two countries are in the world of Asian football. We got drawn against Al Hilal; 2 times winners of the Champions League and 18 times winners of Saudi top division. I was expecting a very difficult game, but it was nothing of the sort, as we smashed them 5-0 away and then 6-0 at home, to go through to the Quarter Final stage of the Champions League which resumes next season. In the end we got the job done and that is all that matters. We can add the Iranian crown to our Georgian, Azeri and Russian ones, and that league title confirms that we are able to leave at the end of the 4th season in Iran.

Our third season in charge of Gostaresh is upon us and we have played our first game of the season as we beat Sepidroud 4-2. We were leading 4-0 early in the second half but they had a mini-comeback against us. Early days but we have started well enough. The friendlies also went to plan, we played some good sides during pre-season such as Steaua Bucharest and Galatasaray and we performed well.

A good month, with a bitter note. That bitter note being the loss to Sepahan, which was disappointing, but we had some very good results this month, we won at the Azadi beating Persepolis for the first time under my tenure. We also beat Tractor Sazi again, making that 3 derby wins in a row for us. We sit in 2nd place, behind the every reliable to start like a house on fire Esteghlal who are perfect through 6 games.

The main player to leave this window was Felisberto Melicio. I felt we could let him go and he was going to become unsettled due to wanting to move to Al Batin. So we made sure we got good money for him. We did however get in some good players, especially Iranians that would improve both the depth of the team and even the first XI.

This month has been very bittersweet. Firstly the sweet part, we captured some more silverware in the form of the Iranian Super Cup as we neat Persepolis Novis (the B side of Persepolis), this comes about because of the bugged Hafzi Cup as they won it because only Second Division sides and below are eligible for the Cup; and the Cup winners play the league winners like every good Super Cup. We also managed to get through Al Shabab in the Champions League 4-2 on aggregate, where we will now play Esteghlal in the semi final. However the bitter part is our horrible league form. We have lost twice in month in humiliating fashion first 4-0 to Foulad and 5-2 to Esteghlal at home. Perhaps we have been a little bit found tactically or the players just aren't pulling their weight, added to the draw we got in month in the league and we are miles away from first placed Esteghlal, to the point where I am close to throwing the towel on the league, I am unsure we can make a gap like that up this season.

We are out the Champions League and in the end it was not close, key injuries played a part in the 2nd leg, but we really were not at the races as Esteghlal make the final. I am beginning to have a deep seated resentment of Esteghlal. In the league we have been much better as we get wins across the board, ironically Esteghlal in the league have been really poor and they are not the team that we are chasing any more as they have the same points as us, instead Persepolis are now leading the league. 6 points to make up in the league, it is going to be difficult but we need to string together more months like this at least in terms of league form, and we may be able to do something. Who knows?

This was always going to be a tough month as we played 1st place Persepolis, 4th place Sepahan and 5th place Tractor Sazi, and we drew all those games, which I think means that the title is not coming to Tabriz this season. It's still a 6 point gap to Persepolis, but it's also 4 points to Esteghlal and one of them might mess up, but both? I don't think so. We will keep going and see what happens but I can't see it happening.

Our Champions League campaign has kicked off, and we were drawn in a group with Al-Nassr of Saudi Arabia, Al-Ain of UAE and Al Duhail of Qatar; who we drew last season. We played Al Duhail away in our first game and came away with the 3-0 win, to start us off nicely. In the league it was going well, but we realistically needed to beat Esteghlal to have any chance of winning the league season, as we lost 3-2, for all intents and purposes it is over for us, I just don't see us making up 7 points on Persepolis from now until the end of the season, or if they blow it 5 points onn Esteghlal. We should though be able to qualify for Champions League football. If we do qualify we should not even be at the club, by the time that this qualification matters as it should kick in season 5. We have already qualfied for next season's Champions League anyway last season.

Well we did the absolute minimum to still be in the conversation concerning the title, however Persepolis have won every game as well. Esteghlal dropped two points against Sepahan but realistically we are running out of games. Esteghlal do play Persepolis at home this next month and Persepolis also play Foulad away, however even if they lost both games they would still be a point ahead of us, and that doesn't explain where Esteghlal are going to drop the points we need to win the league. I am still convinced it can't happen but we will continue to pursue them at the top of the table. In the Champions League things are going very nicely as we made it 3 wins from 3 as we beat Al Ain and Al Nassr.

Well the game against Saipa was utter trash, we were the better team all throughout the game but we couldn't hit a barn door up front and we gave away two penalties, and that officially ended any resistance from us with regards to league ambitions, as mathematically that ended any chance. In the Champions league we have now made it 5 wins from 5 and our focus will now turn to that competition.

We ended the season well. The league was already done for us and we finished the season with two wins to sew up that last Champions League spot. We finished 4 points behind Esteghlal and Persepolis. Incidentally Esteghlal beat Persepolis to the title on goal difference. In the Champions League we beat Al Nassr to make it 6 wins from 6 in the groups and we got drawn in the Second Round against Paxtakor of Uzbekistan, who broke the Saudi/Iranian hegemony over the Champions League later stages. Well it did not go well for them as we beat them 7-0 in Iran and 2-1 in Uzbekistan. The Champions League Quarter Finals will be back next season, and hopefully we go a step further, in what will be our last chance to win the tournament, as I expect to leave at the end of next season having already fulfilled the necessary criteria to move country.

I would say that is pretty good month, two very hard games to start the season, and getting four points from six is probably something that I would have taken had you offered me it beforehand. The friendlies although not important also went to plan.

We have had a very nice month in the league picking up 4 wins from 4, however in the Champions League we got slightly screwed by not being able to register some of the new signings this season and this has left us a bit hamstrung. In the end we got a draw at home to Al Shabab, that means we know we will absolutely have to score in Saudi Arabia when we play again to have any chance of advancing to the semi finals.

Gostaresh Foulad Tabriz - Transfer Window

4fb691d99e6ba652a3e053c97da44701.jpg

It has been a huge transfer window as we sold on a lot the expensive foreigners at the club, who half the time can't play anyway due to the squad registration limits, and this time we focussed on Iranian talent and bringing that into the club. I feel we are now far more balanced in terms of depth and it should stop a lot of the incessant moaning when they are not playing or when I am not allowed to register them for the Champions League due to only being allowed to register 3 foreign players. Anyway the signings are below:-

Ali Khanban

Abolfazl Nemati

Ali Jomehzadeh

Hamad Misaghian

Jessie Mbende

Daniel

Ahmed Bakhtiari

Naser Jahan Alian

Marcio

I was super annoyed at losing the derby. After doing so well, to lose that game really annoyed me as we were the better team and it was just poor to lose like that. We got through Al Shabab with a superb away performance winning 3-0 to through 4-1 on aggregate. We have now also played the first leg of the Champions League semi final and we managed to get a narrow 3-2 win, but I bet Persepolis will be pretty happy with that result as still have to go to the Azadi Stadium and get something from the return leg. We are pretty well positioned in the league in 2nd place, 1 point behind the ever present Esteghlal.

It's been a great month for us as we booked our place in Champions League final, with a superb rear-guard display against Persepolis, to force a 1-1 draw. We will play Kashima Antlers of Japan in the final, and I hope we can lift the trophy, but even if we don't it is a great achievement. In the league we have been reasonably consistent. I was disappointed to draw against Saipa as again we were the better side, and we just seem to sometimes really struggle to convert chances and domination into goals and points. Still I can't be to critical this month as we are through to the AFC Champions League final.

The results in the league have been dog ****, but I don't care as we are Asian Champions, after beating Kashima Antlers 4-0 on aggregate over two legs. That completes all the tournaments we could have won with the club. I was worried for the second leg as we had so many players out of the game either injured or suspended that we needed to delve into the Under 23s but it all worked out. In the league as we mentioned we have been pretty bad getting results. It's same old story, either we take the lead and throw it away or we get a sending off which changes the game. Against Zob Ahan we had a man sent off in the 2nd minute, I mean that is just super dumb, you are not going to win many games if you keep doing that. We sit 4 points behind Esteghlal and it could be 7 points, very soon as we play them away next.

This month we had one league game against Esteghlal and then went off to South Korea for the FIFA World Club Cup. We scored twice late against Esteghlal and they got two injury time goals. I mean if it needed to be exemplified any further as to why we are winning titles year after year, this is the main reason, a complete lack of game management and poor concentration. The league table sees us trail Esteghlal by four points and two points from Persepolis as we sit in 3rd place. In the World Club Cup, we got through the Quarter Final against New Zealand's Southern and then we lost in the semi final to Corinthians. I thought they would dominate us, but we completely dominated them, but still managed to lose the game. The third place playoff saw us play Egyptian side Al Ahly and were finally remorseless as we smashed them 5-1 to finish in 3rd place. It could have been better, but we did okay.

Gostaresh Foulad Tabriz - News

a1cb7ed7b32cf7f330e8f86a6fa7945b.png

We decided to inform the club in January that we would be seeing out the end of our contract and moving on at end of the season. I want to leave on a high, and I would love to take home the league title once more, but we shall see about that. Careful study of the node map I created has informed me that I need to be a little bit flitty when it comes to jobs and plan my route from country to country, therefore I think I would be best off next going to Turkmenistan and finishing off all the ex-Soviet "stan" countries in the area, leaving one of those out is going to be a nightmare to get back to later on.
