It was shaping up to be a great month, but we absolutely trash against Padideh losing 1-0. We don't have a hope in hell of winning the league to be honest. I am beginning to wonder how we ever won it in the first place.

A very good month for us as we win all the games in the league, including a nice win away at rivals Tractor Sazi. Esteghlal have been brilliant this season, they are still unbeaten and look destined to be lifting the league trophy at the end of the season. Sometimes you just have to hold your hands up and say when the other team has been too good to compete with them. The AFC Champions League has come back again and this time around we were required to first qualify for the tournament playing Al Wasl from the UAE, which was not much issue for us as we swept them aside 4-1 in one legged playoff match. The group stages saw us drawn against Al Hilal of Saudi Arabia, Al Ain of UAE and Kuwait SC of Kuwait. We played Kuwait in our first group game in the Kuwait and won out 2-0 to start the Champions League in the best way.

Another great month from us, but there is nothing we can do about Esteghlal as they also win every game in the month to keep the gap at 7 points, with four games remaining it would need an almighty collapse at this stage for them to be denied another Iranian title and they still have a shot at an unbeaten season. In the Champions League, no problems for us as we open up our account with 3 wins from 3 and qualification for the next round looks pretty much assured at this stage.

Well the league is over and Esteghlal have won it, it did go until the last day of the month as we won every game to at least apply some pressure to them. The reason it went to the final game of the month, was that their unbeaten record went up in smoke away to Persepolis, but they recovered well to beat Sepahan to wrap it all up a game before the end of the league season. We have been good this month winning all our league games and the games in the Champions League, including a 10-0 destruction of Kuwait SC which came quiet unexpectedly. We are already group winners of Group D and will be advancing to the Second Round; of course we will not be managing beyond the Second Round stage as this is our last season and the Champions League only finished next season.

Our final month in Iran, and we got to see a lot of Persepolis. After we beat Al Hilal to record a perfect group stage, we played Persepolis in the final league game and got a win, to keep the gap between us and Esteghlal to 4 points. Then we drew them in the Champions League Second Round and we did a good job on them beating them 2-0 on aggregate. That's the end of the 4th year and we will be moving on imminently.

Final Thoughts on Iran

I found Iran quite a tough country to manage in, clearly this is context specific as it is probably easier if you are managing Esteghlal or Persepolis, but we were not a bad side, and it was so hard to win the league. When we did it, I was sure we were turning a corner and would win it again but we never did win it again and that shows how good Esteghlal specifically are. I did not particularly like the rule set, as you are allowed 5 foreign players in the starting XI, but then you can only register 3 in the Champions League, so this is bound to cause issues when you are submitting your list of players and you miss out a player that feels he should be selected, that just kills morale half way through the season. I tried to rectify that the season we won the Champions League and I guess it worked to win it, but it is difficult to adjust to because your scouts only seem to find foreign players, the Director of Football only ever recommended foreign players so you need to be really astute and be careful with selling what appear to be sub standard Iranian players, but actually they are really important down the line when you have to use them.

I think we did a pretty good job, as this club in real life no longer even exists, and to end up with an Iranian Pro League and a Champions League considering the opposition, is something I will take. I feel we were lucky to win the league when we did as easily it could have taken another 4 seasons to find the right season when the stars would align and we would win it.

Next up I really want to go to Turkmenistan and will even wait a while to get a job. It just makes sense when you look at the node map that it will probably save us time long term rather than having to go through completed countries in the future. The section of map is below and you can see it just makes sense to get them out of the way while I am close and get to them from Iran.

Managerial Appointment

a77a070433a3ffb2b524638fd6634f5e.png

It took quite a while, to the point where I thought something was bugging out, but we finally got a job in Turkmenistan my chosen direction. We are the new manager of Balkan Balkanabat, from the town of Balkanabat in Turkmenistan near the Caspian Sea. In the end it took for the season to end and finally a job or two came about, and we join the club at the end of August 2034.

16062f78bca7754957a01b76df6f5e96.png

It's quite the drive around the Caspian Sea from Tabriz to Balkanabat where we will be calling home for at least next 4 years, presuming we do not get sacked.

The Town of Balkanabat

6f1d867f957c7fe31a03724ebe0ac42b.jpg

The town was founded in 1933 as "Neftedag", meaning "Oil Mountain" (from Russian neft, "oil", and Turkmen dag, "mountain"), as a settlement along one of the stations of Trans-Caspian Railway. In 1946, when it was transformed into a city, it was renamed "Nebit-Dag", also meaning "Oil Mountain" but this time using the Turkmen word nebit.

There is a large monument on the far eastern side of the city called "Monument to the Desert Explorers" which depicts a camel and several men struggling to walk through the windy desert of Karakum. Nebit Dag was renamed to Balkanabad (Balkan from the name of the Balkan mountains, abad – city) in 2001 by the decree of former President of Turkmenistan Saparmurat Niyazov.

The city has a "Health Path," which is a concrete path outside of the city built to give the citizens of the town a place to take a moderate hike along the mountainside. It was opened in 2004 to model a similar concrete path outside of Ashgabat. The city has five bazaars (markets) Gök, Jennet, Gündogar, Bereket and bazaar on 5th microregion. There is hotel "Nebitçi", a theatre, museums, restaurants and parks in Balkanabat. The north side of town contains the large park "Saparmyrat Türkmenbaşy Seýilgähi" which contains tennis courts, a life-size chess board and plenty of benches.[citation needed]

The Yomud tribe was historic to the Balkan region and the Yomud carpet göl (pattern) is one of the five patterns represented on the Turkmen flag.

It is an industrial centre for petroleum and natural gas production. Animal breeding and wheat and cotton cultivation are another areas of economy in Balkanabat. The city is served by Balkanabat Airport. The city is connected to Ashgabat by Turkmenistan Airlines, as well as by train and bus. Buses route is from east to the west of Magtymguly shayoly (highway) and makes stops at bus station. While there is no official cab company, private citizens operate shared cabs. Almost any vehicle will pick up passengers and a ride costs is about 1 Turkmen manats (0.35 US cents). If the driver has already passengers in the car, then he will agree to take you if headed in the similar direction of their other available passengers. The city layout is a grid of apartment blocks called kvartal (quarters). There are main streets called Magtymguly, Pervomayskiy and Gurbansoltan eje shayoly. There are range of national banks, Turkmenpostal services in the centre by Magtymguly Shayoly, near 197 kvartal.

In May 2010, the club changed its name to Balkan Balkanabat from Nebitçi Balkanabat by the decision of Turkmenistan Football Federation.

The sports complex opened on 14 October 2009. Construction works carried out by Turkish company Ozaylar. The project cost $20 million.

The sports complex includes a stadium for 10,000 spectators, sports facilities for volleyball, basketball, boxing, wrestling, mini-football, tennis. There is a fitness center with gym, swimming pool, a small hotel with 50 rooms.

Current Position

A mid table finish last time out is not bad going, but clearly it was not good enough for the board who sacked the manager, with a little media pressure from myself.

I have no idea at what level the squad in comparison to the league, but I would say our best player is Hemra Tagayew, and he would be nowhere near the first team anywhere else I have managed, so this is going to be interesting.

Balkan Balkanabat - Transfer Window

5b7a7ca19a3b0ba65a4979187ebe08e8.png

There is a huge wait to begin the league, we arrived to the club in August and this is a January transfer window and the league will not start until the end of March, there are only 14 games in a league season, so that is an explanation for it. In terms of transfers, my new employers have already been annoying me by selling some of our best players from underneath me, which I am not happy about. But I am happy about some of the signings I have been able to make for this standard of competition.

A month with two wins and two clean sheets which I am very happy about. We beat Asudalyk in the cup, they are from the division below, 2-0 does not do justice the amount of domination we had in the game. Then at the end of the month we played our first league game against Sagadam and had a very nice 5-0 victory to put us top of the pile. Importantly title favourites Ahal have already lost a game and in a 14 games season that could be big, every result is crucial.

April is clearly a big month for Turkmenistani football as we have plenty of games of a short season contained within it. We have been superb, as if we are a division above all these teams we are playing. We have smashed both our nearest rivals in Ahal and Altyn Asyr and everyone else we have played, even 4th Yedigen got smahed 7-2. Apart from that game also we have not conceded showing it is not just the attack that is doing the job. Graur, our new Romanian striker has 16 goals in the 8 competitive games we have played. In the cup we faced Asgabat, and got past them very easily 4-0. It certainly does look at this stage as if we are on procession to the league title and maybe even the double!

The destruction continued this month as we beat everyone we played. Two league wins and through in the cup beating Merw. Incidentally we have a B Team in the 2nd Division and they have made it to Cup Semi Final too. There is a chance we could be playing our B side in the cup final. They are playing with our tactics so it is possible they could overcome Ahal. We will be playing Altyn Asyr in cup semi final. We are now 7 points clear in the league and we are champions elect at this stage.

It just keeps getting better and better as we win all our games in the month. The first game we had 10 players out playing an international with Turkmenistan and we still won the game no problems. We also got through the cup beating Altyn Asyr, and we will be playing our B Team in the final, as they came through 3-2 against Ahal. It's all getting a little bit silly really.

The win against Altyn Asyr, was enough to sew up the league as if that was ever in doubt. We have been sensational this season and we have now secured the title which will be our ticket to the next country when the four years are up. Nice to get it done in the first year. We are two games away from a perfect season, and I very much back us to get it.

We seem to have gone on holiday a month early as we draw and lose our final two league games, which for the first time gives me some cause for concern that perhaps, it's not going to be as easy as I was thinking during my four years here. We actually faced one of toughest tests against our B Team Neftci-2 in the Cup Final but we came through with a late goal to win cup and do the double in our first season.

Balkan Balkanabat - Transfer Window

622974b0b12b527e507b04a09254feb9.png

The transfer windows in Turkmenistan are very weird in that they mirror Europe, and to be honest it makes no sense when your season starts in March and ends in August. Our chairman is a bit of a tool, he sold both our best right back and our best right winger. I have replaced the right back, i just bought Ahal's right back for a fraction of the price and he is almost as good as the one they stole off us. We will have to see about the right winger in the off season. He is also keeps selling players to our direct rivals for the league which has never been a good recipe for success in my book. Anyway we got in a few further exceptional transfers to round off our foreign contingent to maximum 5 that we are allowed.

As mentioned the transfer windows are weird that is why you get two back to back transfer windows because there is no action in between. Anyway we had to sell Mamatkazin, so that we could cover the issue the chairman had created by selling off our right winger as we needed to replace him with a Uzbekistani player. We also got a few cover players where we could find them, talent is pretty rare at our level amongst the Turkmeni contingent of players.

Balkan Balkanabat - Pre Season Friendlies 2036

The season has kicked off and we have not started league play as yet because we are involved in the AFC Confederation Cup as Turmenistani league winners, and we played Turkmenistani version of the Super Cup. In the Conferderation Cup we have been drawn in a group with other Central Asian teams, namely Ahal from Turkmenistan, Istiqlol from Tajikistan and Dordoy from Kyrgyzstan. So far we managed to beat Ahal at home narrowly and Istiqlol away, so we are in the leadership of the group and looking good for qualification at the moment. In the Super Cup we needed penalties to overcome Ahal, but that is the final missing trophy for Turkmenistan, we have now won it all. A good month all in all but it was pretty close in all games.

April is a very long month in Turkmenistani football and it was back again. Firstly in the league we did lose to Altyn Asyr away which means that we currently sit second in the league, we have played both Ahal and Altyn away so they still need to come to the Balkanabat, so I am confident we can take the points when they come there and we can move back top, assuming nothing unexpected happens in between in other games. In the Turkmenistani cup we got through against lower league Gara Altyn in an easy game which we won 8-0 to reach the Quarter Finals. In the AFC Confederation Cup things are not looking at rosy however as only one team goes through in the group and we sit second to Ahal on results between teams as we won at home 2-1 and lost 2-0 away, and this means we are reliant on Ahal not winning their final game of the group stages or we are out and I do not hold out much hope of that happening. It would be hugely disappointing to go out at this stage of the competition.

Well the AFC Confederation Cup match against Istiqlol ended up being a bit of a farce as we lost the match to basically have no chance of progressing to the next round, it would not have mattered anyway as Ahal won their final game to progress out of the group stages and we go out, which is hugely disappointing. We did however get a bit of a stranglehold ont the league this month as we moved 5 points clear of Ahal with 4 games remaining of the league season, from here we should be able to tie up the league. We also advanced to the Semi Final of the cup by beating Sagadam in a very tight affair 2-1 in the Quarter Final. The standard of competition is improving and we are just about hanging on to our top spot. I blame our chairman for selling our best players to our rivals. Idiot!

A short month but a good one for us as we pick up a big win in the league and secure our place in the final of the cup thanks to a semi final win over Dagadan from the division below. We will be playing Yokary Ligasy strugglers Merw in the final, so I am hoping we can make it a second double (or first treble if you count the Super Cup this year).

A short month as we go within a point of winning the league, and we play Ahal next at home or failing that we would then play bottom Serhetci at home, so I think the title will be coming back to Balkanabat. We have also won the cup battering Merw 7-2 in the final, to make it two years in a row.

We sign off the season with two wins and the league title as we make it back to back titles and a treble this year. We actually did better this year than last year as we drew one less game, although at times it felt like the level had been raised up to be more of a challenge. Next season I really want to target the AFC Confederation Cup and see if we can get past Ahal in that competition.

Last year our performance in the AFC Confederation Cup disappointed me, and I want to improve, and we have started in the right way by beating Dordoy and Ahal, we need to make sure we keep matching Ahal's results and not to lose to them by 3 goals when we play them again and we should be safe. We had a tough start to the season with Altyn Asyr coming across to play us but we performed very well and won out 4-0. It's been a very good start to the season.

I can't really ask for anymore a full month with nothing but wins and no goals conceded to break the club record. It has been very impressive. Starting in the league we have opened up a gap to Energetik Mary of 5 points, Altyn Asyr and Ahal are nowhere to be found, and it is already looking like we should be taking home another title. In the cup we are through to the Quarter Final after beating lower league Melik in a routine win. In the Confederation Cup, it will all come down to one game against Ahal but we have done what we needed to do and win all our other group games. Ahal are hot on our heels, and they will need to beat us by 3 clear goals of anything resulting in a result of 5-2 on less. 6-3 and above we would go through on goal difference and then away goals of results between teams. This has been probably our best month in charge of Balkan.

It's been another superb month for us as we continue in the league with wins and not conceding any goals. We did concede in the Confederation Cup but the game ended 2-2 which was more than enough to end us through to the Inter Zone Playoff phase of the tournament. In the cup we faced Asgabat and we battered them 6-0 to move to the semi final stage of the competition. Ahal in real trouble this season, they are only two points above the relegation zone. I would love for them to get relegated and raid their team for all their Turkmenistani internationals.

The win against Energetic Mary was enough to secure another league title for ourselves, to make three in a row. We also played our B-Team Nebtci-2 in the cup semi final and as expected we made it through to the final. Nebtci-2 would be a very decent top division side if they were allowed to be promoted, I am unsure why though they really have cast off players and youngsters and somehow they make the best of it, although they do use our tactical formation so perhaps that is it.

Two final wins in the league mean that we go unbeaten and a perfect season where we won every league game this season, unlike a normal season our season is not over as the Confederation Cup continues and we drew Mumbai City in the Interzone Playoff semi final and we look good value to go through after a 4-1 win at home. The return leg is next month.

No one left the club this window apart from Micu who was I knew was going to leave anyway (he was released), apart from a fair few players we released. One major signing and a guy to just be a back up right back.

A draw in India was enough for us to pass into the Interzone Playoff Final 5-2 on aggregate. This drew us against Indonesian Superleague side PSM Makassar, and we won the first leg at home 4-2. We will need to be careful in the return leg but so far so good.

Safirov is the main man to leave, he is an Uzbek, and therefore a foreign quota player and we could do much better, therefore we have replaced him. We also got back Tagayew, which the chairman sold all those years ago when I first arrived at the club.

Sarvar Karimov

Hemra Tagayew
