Smurf
1 hour ago, kokafalasi said: Thanks @Smurf I actually prefer going for a Mac for my own reasons (bad windows experiences in the past, my and my girlfriend’s devices are all Apple etc). I appreciate that I could get similar specs at a lower price in a PC but I’m happy to take that hit. So I’m just contemplating which Mac to go for in the <2k range, which means I have to exclude the 16” Pro. The standard MB Pro 13” comes with an 8 GB RAM so if I may just pose the question again: is the upgrade to 16 highly recommended? Also do you think the lack of cooling (fans) would affect the Air’s longevity for the intended usage? I don’t intend to play any other games, am playing FM in 3D and usually have 5-6 leagues on large DB so around 30k players. Thanks again for your time, even reading through this thread has been immensely helpful! You're making a financial mistake. But if you're happy to take the hit then go for it. Windows is fine, I turn my computer on and off and it's put through it's paces as I'm a graphic designer dealing with big files and heavy graphics and lots of processing to do. 8gb of RAM is fine. 16gb is obviously better, don't know how easy/costly it is to upgrade a Mac later on. The MacBook Air doesn't have cooling fans, so you'll definitely get cooling issues, and that leads to processor throttling. If you went with the MacBook Pro 13 inch, I think that has cooling fans (you'd have to look into that). Honestly I think it's a waste of money if all you play is FM. It's ok - not sure how the new Intel hold up - but the specs of the processor look good. Don't see any issue. Seems to be in good company around other top processors. According to NotebookCheck the processors around this are: + Intel Core i7-7920HQ 4x 3.1 GHz - 4.1 GHz » Intel Core i5-1135G7 4x 2.4 GHz - 4.2 GHz - Intel Core i5-1038NG7 4x 2 GHz - 3.8 GHz - Intel Core i5-9300HF 4x 2.4 GHz - 4.1 GHz - Intel Core i5-9300H 4x 2.4 GHz - 4.1 GHz - Intel Core i5-8400H 4x 2.5 GHz - 4.2 GHz Go for the 13 inch MacBook Pro. It's a lot of money - you could get a PC Laptop for under 2k with much better specs. Go back to Page 4 or 5 - I listed a Mac there for about 4k and put together a much better PC Laptop on PC Specialist for about 1.7k. For 600 euro you won't do much better. I'd go with the Ryzen. What's the budget now? Thanks for your reply. Would you know any tablets to recommend that will run touch smoothly.

Rushers82
I'm looking at getting a new lap top as my seven year old Lenovo is on its last legs. I play FM20 currently (may move up to FM21 at some point, but maybe not), normally with only one nation (England) and seven leagues (i.e. down to National North/South), but would like the option to potentially expand this out a bit. I'm not too fussed about the quality of the graphics. I don’t play other games, so main other uses are browsing, music and Netflix etc while we're away. I can't justify a big budget due to the reduced usage/game play these days (pesky kids), so I accept that I'll end up with a slower than average game speed. How do these two compare? A friend recommended the first, but the processor ranks really low on the comparison site. Is the extra £100+ justified for the second one? https://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/dell-inspiron-15-3505-156-fhd-wva-ryzen-3-3250u-8gb-ram-256gb-ssd-black-laptop-ps45505-at-dell-shop-with-code-3592503 https://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/computing/laptops/laptops/hp-15s-eq1510sa-15-6-laptop-amd-ryzen-5-256-gb-ssd-silver-10207935-pdt.html Thanks in advance

We really can't comment on the new Macbook Air until someone has tried it - anything until then is purely guesswork. The setup certainly seems less than ideal, but it could all be fine in practice. Until someone tries it and gives us feedback, all we can do is speculate. As to whether the upgrade from 8GB to 16GB RAM is highly recommended? It largely depends on what else you'll be doing with the computer. If all you're doing is FM and basic computing tasks, I would suggest that 8GB is ample, unless there's very little difference in price (but from memory it's something like a £200 difference give or take). vinny6876
Good morning! I am looking to gest a desktop PC, as i think these will be more powerful than a laptop (pls correct me if I'm wrong!). I currently have a Microsoft Surface Book 2 laptop (Intel Core i7-8650U CPU @ 1.90 GHZ 2.11 GHz with 16 GB installed RAM with Windows 10. The reason for looking to run FM21 on a new machine is because i found this machine to get very hot when playing FM20. I'm not sure if FM21 will cause the same issues or not? Is there anything I could buy do you think to help with this, extra memory or anything like that? I would like to run the majority of the leagues with a full selection of all the players in the World being generated. Money is not the most important thing so am happy to spend in excess of £1,000 for the right machine. I would really only be playing FM on this machine and Civilization 4. I would be extremely grateful for any suggestions if money is not the object to play this game with all the leagues loaded and players in the game operating at a good speed without overheating and using the 3D match engine. If it is better to get the computer built with specifications it would be amazing to know what i should be telling a shop to build for me?

But if it is over your budget, then I'd suggest this: https://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/saved-configurations/amd-am4-home-office/HRDHG3XKnk/ Decent integrated graphics which should work for both FM and Sketchup. You'll get refurb units which can run the game, but it will be slow. https://www.laptopstation.co.uk/product/laptops/ay167sa/ - will run the game, processing will not be quick and the 3D match graphics will need to be turned right down, or play in 2D. https://www.laptopstation.co.uk/product/laptops/a315-256/ - If you can stretch to £370, this will be better. Still not great, but processing will be quicker and the integrated graphics will be a bit stronger. Other than that, I can't find anything which I'd consider any way acceptable. But, nothing concrete on it as yet, so it will be a gamble at the moment!

You star. Right I’ll go to 600 I think. Can I ask two more questions. 1) on both of your builds you haven’t selected a 1st storage drive. Why is that? 2) is that build better than the acer Nitro? https://www.box.co.uk/Acer-Nitro-N50-610-Gaming-Desktop-PC_2936931.html Edited November 26, 2020 by abc12345

Why is that? 2) is that processer as good as an i5? 1) I've selected a 512GB M2 SSD, as this is the quickest type of storage. 2) Talking specifically the two CPUs in question (i5-10400f and Ryzen 5 3500X), the i5 is a bit stronger, but the benchmarks seem to score them quite closely if you look at the overall scores: https://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Intel-Core-i5-10400F-vs-AMD-Ryzen-5-3500X/4079vs4052 If you want the Intel, here's a build with that CPU, but with reduced storage (256GB) at £619.00: https://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/saved-configurations/intel-z490-pc/6F6w4avNDX/ You could reduce it below £600 if you change the graphics card to a GTX 1030, which in theory should still be fine for FM and Sketchup, it is just quite a lot weaker than the 1650. The processor is about 4/5 times better than my current one which is still barely able to run the game so no issues there for me. The 1050Ti will be ample for FM. Do check the full CPU spec though to make sure it is the improvement you think it is. That's a very generic description and doesn't give the CPU model, or even which generation i5 it is. I've been lurking in the shadows for a while but finally decided to create an account and ask a few questions, thanks in advance! With all the "this seems ok" or "I've read this one will do for now". Can anybody personally recommend a laptop which they've actually owned/used for FM with high 3D settings? My old work laptop is barely operating FM21 Beta on the lowest of low settings so it's time to plunge into a new one, what with Black Friday upon us and such. Could anybody recommend an all-rounder laptop which is good for films, work, smooth FM21 at high settings etc etc. Don't worry about it's GTA5 Ultra/Crysis settings and what not as I've got an Xbox Series X on order which is what it's designed for! Cheers! Hi all! Just wondering if anybody could shed light on this at all or have a solid suggestion on a decent laptop which will smash FM21 visually/mechanically? Cheers. Thanks ABC for suggestion of Lenovo desktop. I’m really after the all doing and seeing desktop and not sure if the Lenovo is that?

The setup certainly seems less than ideal, but it could all be fine in practice. Until someone tries it and gives us feedback, all we can do is speculate. As to whether the upgrade from 8GB to 16GB RAM is highly recommended? It largely depends on what else you'll be doing with the computer. If all you're doing is FM and basic computing tasks, I would suggest that 8GB is ample, unless there's very little difference in price (but from memory it's something like a £200 difference give or take). Thanks @kevhamster! Yeah FM the only game and then basic stuff (browsing, emails, some netflix). The difference in price is indeed around £200. I’ll probably go for the 13” MB Pro, just deciding on 8/16 GB RAM now. Thanks again to both you and @Smurf for your time. Awesome thread 👍

I’m really after the all doing and seeing desktop and not sure if the Lenovo is that? If you want to run a game as large as you're suggesting, you're going to need as strong a CPU as you can afford really. A database the size you're suggesting is going to be tough on any system, and won't process that quickly even on the best CPU's. As such, I'd suggest something like this, if you can afford it: https://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/saved-configurations/amd-am4-gen3-pc/3HkQGEpuSb/ That CPU is about as strong as is currently available and the graphics card is ample.
