canberraguy
Hi all, I am still in the research phase of buying a new PC and am comparing two CPUs and really want to know a couple of things. Benefits of cores vs Ghz? I am looking to compare Intel Core i7 10700K Octa Core LGA 1200 3.80GHz Unlocked CPU Processor and Intel Core i9 10900F 10-Core LGA 1200 2.80GHz CPU Processor Is one significantly better then the other? thanks a lot John Edited March 13, 2021 by canberraguy

Out of interest how many leagues will I be able to run with this PC at a reasonable processing speed? My current laptop can now only handle 1 nation really That's not really something I can advise - what is acceptable is subjective so my expectations on what is good is likely different to yours. That said, it's an excellent CPU and will handle the game as well anything under £1000, so you will be in for a much better time than you're getting on your current machine. TrueSkyBlue87
Hi, I am browsing for a new laptop, primarily to play FM in all its glory at max graphics settings and at a decent speed. Polski97
An interesting question here. So I have a MacBook Air from 2015 and have been using it as my Uni Laptop but recently I have discovered Steam Cloud Gaming. I have no longer any use for the Laptop as uni is done with so i now use it to watch stuff and as of recently also play FM21. I have a beefy PC where I start all my saves. I also have all my texture packs and face packs there so it is more appealing for me to play on my pc however I have recently found myself playing more on the laptop. Due to cloud i can play my 70K + player database on my MacBook Air... without any overheating or heavy fan work or instant battery deterioration. Recently I have been on this thread a lot to scope out a Laptop for around £1000 to run FM21 but I started to question ... WHY. My MacBook through cloud gaming has allowed me to load my massive saves and still be able to play it without limitations, only graphically I have to play 2D which is a small sacrifice. So do I really need a new laptop for that amount of money? I can see myself becoming more dependent on the laptop in the future due to the increased mobility it gives me so I definitely want an upgrade especially to windows system as Mac is a fancy ball ache. So my question is, what do you think? Do I need it. Thanks guys.

But, for full disclosure, nobody here can tell you if you need to buy a new computer. Nobody except you knows your full circumstances, and so it's not right that we should tell you whether you should buy a new computer or not. But, if you decide you do want to buy one, you are welcome to post your requirements and budget and we can work something out.

I think you just need a larger hard drive - which would be far cheaper than buying a whole new computer. £500 won't get you much. Potentially worse than you already have. You can play the game anywhere by just logging into to your steam account and downloading your cloud saves. It doesn't matter what computer, Mac/PC/Laptop - the game saves are cross-platform compatible. If you wan to buy a new computer for FM for £1000 go for it. If you're happy with the Mac and it's doing what's required then why change at all?

Mainly fm related saves generally running at 1.5 stars with 8 or so nations loaded and a large database slower than it’s usually been and then sometimes it’s fine in the game speed it’s very hit and miss and as you say hard drive which can be rectified by getting a new ssd. Probably don’t need a new one

Probably don’t need a new one Take the star ratings with a liberal helping of salt. Also, some times in game are naturally slower to progress than others (transfer window deadline days being a specific example, and any day with a large number of matches being played). My current save on my fairly decent PC has a rating of 0.5 stars because I've loaded every league in Europe, plus a few others, and the speed is absolutely fine. redbanjos
Looking to buy a new laptop purely for FM. I like to play with 3D engine and large database, used to running 8-10 playable leagues but I’d like to be able to up that to 15+ and still run at a good speed. Doesn’t need to be lightening fast, just comfortable (as I’m used to playing on a MacBook Air that overheats and makes ALOT of noise when playing). Budget is £500-£700 range, ideally from laptopsdirect as I get discount on there through work. These are the two I’ve been looking at: https://www.laptopsdirect.co.uk/msi-gf63-thin-core-i5-10300h-8gb-256gb-ssd-geforce-gtx-1650-max-q-15.6-inch-9s7-16r412-426/version.asp https://www.laptopsdirect.co.uk/medion-crawler-e10-core-i5-10300h-8gb-256gb-ssd-15.6-inch-geforce-gtx-1650-30029419/version.asp Also have an eye on this one as it’s cheaper, if the other two are overkill for what I’m after: https://www.laptopsdirect.co.uk/hp-255-ryzen-5-8gb-512gb-ssd-15.6-inch-_fiull-hd-windows-10-laptop-1b7k2es/version.asp Any advice is appreciated. The last one is quite a bit weaker than the other two and I personally think it's vastly overpriced, and so I'd avoid it.

Platinum
Hi both, Im looking to buy a new Desktop PC that's essentially a monster PC lol and can run most leagues, basically something like the first two PCs at this link https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/12vp32qrHivL-_auW9D0pp-F7ZvrvQlqtBgfcSOL8n5I/edit#gid=1041602144 which is the best two PCs from the benchmarking thread. The only problem is the graphics cards are no longer available so I'm not sure what to do. Do you have any recommendations for PCs or PC parts to run FM with most and lots of league on full detail? The CPU also seems scarce - the build below includes the CPU which came third in the benchmarking thread (they do have the Ryzen 9 5900X listed as a pre-order part, but with no clear indication as to when they expect it to be in stock). I also can't find any pre-built systems with that Ryzen 9 CPU in either (at least that are in stock). One at box.co.uk is listed as that CPU, but it says it's a 12 core so they either have the CPU model wrong, or the number of cores wrong so I wouldn't trust the listing either way. This one has a decent, but not top of the range graphics card. It's the same one as I have in my own rig and has handled everything I've thrown at it, but some of the most demanding titles require the settings to be turned down a bit (for example, it'll run Microsoft Flight Simulator, but it's best at the very high preset, which is one step below ultra so still very respectable). You could increase the GPU power a bit by changing it to the 2060. All the 30 series cards are currently out of stock pretty much everywhere. https://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/saved-configurations/amd-am4-gen3-pc/GH4m!KkwhA/

Edit: I just changed your config to use the 3950 cpu and 2060 you and it turns out cheaper than my spreadsheet The Ryzen 7 5800X is one of the strongest CPUs currently available. From the two mentioned, the Ryzen 9 comes in 4th and the Ryzen 7 comes in at 13th - either is way up there with the best currently available. In terms of sound card, the motherboard should have onboard sound, which is fine for general use. If you're looking at things like music production, video editing or streaming then you'll need to look at an audio interface, but USB ones are fine for that so can be considered after the PC itself is done, and basic ones with mic inputs can be found for lower than £50, so that shouldn't be a worry. You have forgotten to factor in a CPU cooler though - what you have noted as the fan is actually a PSU, so you'll need to get a decent CPU cooler to make sure the CPU doesn't overheat. This one is rated highly on PC part picker: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07H9JL1P8?tag=pcp0f-21&linkCode=ogi&th=1&psc=1 I've just noticed that you've actually picked the 3rd gen Ryzen 9 there. That being the case, I'd honestly suggest going with the build I put up on PC Specialist. The Ryzen 9 3950x is good, but the Ryzen 7 5800x is better (you're looking at a 3rd generation Ryzen 9 v a 5th generation Ryzen 7). DonsTillDeath
Hello, I am also looking for a new laptop as mine is about 5 years old and quite slow. I currently have a HP Pavilion Notebook with 8GB RAM and Intel(R) HD Graphics 5500. The processor is i5-5200U CPU @ 2.20 GHz. However, when I play FM - it says that my device's graphics compatibility is just 1 star. Is this laptop a considerable upgrade that would increase that rating and also allow me to play FM smoothly? https://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/computing/laptops/laptops/dell-inspiron-15-3501-15-6-laptop-intel-core-i3-256-gb-ssd-black-10218230-pdt.html I would only be using the laptop to play FM - and I definitely do not want to go any further than £500. I currently have a HP Pavilion Notebook with 8GB RAM and Intel(R) HD Graphics 5500. The processor is i5-5200U CPU @ 2.20 GHz. However, when I play FM - it says that my device's graphics compatibility is just 1 star. If you go for the M1 variant, feedback is that it performs well overall, but some people have had issues with the game crashing. But, overall, I'd still recommend the Windows machines over the Macbooks purely because they are more powerful and do offer better value. Probably worth having a read through this thread:

There aren't many benchmarks for the i5-11300h yet, so it's hard to be certain. In terms of the graphics card, the current one is stronger, but the one from the previous model is still more than enough for FM and to be honest every other game you could currently throw at it. If I was going to chose personally, I'd go for the previous model as the Ryzen 7 4800H has 8 cores and 16 threads, where as the i5-11300h is quad-core with 8 threads so I suspect the Ryzen 7 would still be the stronger CPU overall. Both roughly the same - I'd go with the newer processor if pushed.

More expensive than the dell but more value for money I think, plus looking at the dells reviews there seems to be a few problems with the design Thanks the the help
Gallows7
Hi all! My old laptop has given up the ghost unfortunately so I’m here for a bit of advice please! I’m looking for the best of both worlds, a decent work laptop that can run FM21 (5/6 leagues with a large database, with high graphics). Not at the same time but it has to be able to perform well at both really. I’ve got my Xbox Series X for my serious gaming so I’m just after something for FM21, RuneScape, Minecraft, films, Spotify as well being used as a workhorse during the day. I’ve a budget of around £700 or so, preferably PCWorld or Curry’s as I could get 20% off. 😇 Cheers all! Edited March 27, 2021 by Gallows7
