Been looking for a new laptop for a while for FM. i was using my work laptop but due to javalog 4J they have told me to uninstall any non work related stuff. I have an old Acer i5 3rd gen that can play the game but very slowly and is well past it's best

Saw this on the box website, seem to have a sale on - https://www.box.co.uk/9S7-155226-457-MSI-Modern-15-Intel-Core-i5-8GB-RAM-512G_3857038.html.

I generally run a large databse with the top 5 european leagues and  with players who have continental rep in other continents. Happy enough to play with only commentary aswell so this should do what i need or is there better value

That'll do exactly what you want and is excellent value at that price.  And it should manage the 3D match graphics at medium settings at least, so you don't have to be confined to commentary only.

Yep, I'd agree.  That's probably the best you'll get at that price.

Honor are a Chinese brand.  Their stuff seems to review quite well.

Thanks very much for your help.

I just had a look at the laptop that phetrov posted. Considering it’s £170 cheaper than the laptop I posted, it doesn’t seem that much worse, or have I got that wrong?

If I can spend significantly less than £600, my wife might not be quite as annoyed at me for buying a laptop purely for FM! However, I wouldn’t want to compromise on quality if there’s a significant step up to the Honor I found.

Sorry for all the questions. I really am out of my depth lol.

The one you posted has a better CPU and twice the RAM, but that other one at £429.97 is a fantastic deal so if your preference is to go down to that sort of price then you'll be getting an excellent laptop for the price.

Welcome to the New Laptop Thread

We are all very excited for Football Manager 2021. And as such some things have changed this year for FM21.

This thread will also help if you play older versions of FM and still want a new computer. At 100 pages, it was felt technology has evolved and as such so does the advice that goes with it.

======================IMPORTANT======================

WHAT IS YOUR BUDGET?
ANY OTHER INFO?

======================================================

WHAT IS YOUR BUDGET?
Let's face it, nobody wants to waste hard earned cash.

The most expensive computer is not always the best for Football Manager!

It also helps if you’ve had a look and identified a computer which you like the look of. If you have, post a link to an online listing and we can let you know whether or not it would be appropriate to your needs.

NOTES:
Beware of high prices:
Some computers designed for portability are more expensive.
Beware of going to the most expensive first, different computers are built for different needs (like portability).

Expectations:
Generally speaking, the lower your budget the more likely it is that you will need to lower your expectations on how many leagues/divisions and database size you will have. And the lower the detail level for 3D matches.

We don't know:
We cannot test every computer/laptop, we only speak about the specs and if it's suitable for Football Manager and if it's within your budget. There is no way to know for certain how many Leagues/Divisions/Database size or how fast the game will progress. One user may be happy with the game progressing a week in 20 minutes, for others that may be too slow, so It's all subjective.

======================ANY OTHER INFO?======================

Do you want to watch Netflix?
Do you play other games?
Do you want to edit vidoes?
Listen to music, spotify?
Do you edit photos?
etc.?

List all the things you wish to do with your new computer/laptop.

=======================================================
CHOOSING A COMPUTER

3 main components are

1. CPU/APU

2. GPU

3. RAM

=======================================================

CPU/APU

Central Processing Unit (CPU) better known as the Processor
(it maybe referred to as the APU on some systems).

The most important consideration when looking at a new computer for FM.

This is effectively the brain of your PC. The better this is the smoother FM will run. It may also allow you to load more leagues/divisions and a larger database size.

How do I know if the processor is good?

FM21 requires minimum of 1.8ghz
(Previous versions require 2.2ghz)

A decent site to compare
https://www.notebookcheck.net/Mobile-Processors-Benchmark-List.2436.0.html

CPU designs get  better every year, it is very possible that the game will run with processors clocked at lower speeds, however it is still best to look at CPU’s which meet and even better exceed the minimum stated speed requirement to minimise potential issues.

It's not all necessarily about the fastest clock speed. There are other factors in the processor that can be considered.
If in doubt, let us know and we can try to advise you the best we can.

================

GRAPHICS CARD

This is what allows the computer to display graphics.
There are two options when it comes to types of graphics card.

Integrated or Dedicated?

Integrated
is where the graphics processing capability is built into the CPU and is the less capable option.  FM will still happily run with integrated graphics, however, if playing using the 3D match engine, you may need to lower the settings for it to run at a smooth frame rate.

Note:
Some AMD processors (and others) have really good integrated graphics and may be able to run the 3D match engine at higher settings.

Dedicated
Where a computer has a dedicated graphics card entirely separate from the CPU. This will generally be needed for playing 3D matches at the highest settings, or if playing other games.

==============
RAM

RAM allows multiple tasks (programs) to run at once. The more RAM you have the more smoothly the computer operates when you have multiple programs open, like playing FM, watching Netflix, editing music/videos, etc.

Football Manager will also utilise the RAM and having more RAM allows some parts of FM to transit faster.

Guide:
8GB RAM is plenty for most people
16GB RAM is better but not necessarily essential
32gb RAM would only really be needed for heavy duty movie editing/animation etc.

NOTE:
Optane RAM or Optane Memory - some computers are listed on sites as having 4GB RAM and 32GB Optane RAM/Memory. Optane memory is temp storage that allows older hard drives to operate a little bit faster. More below.

=================
Hard Drive
There are mainly 3 types

HDD - Mechanical drive - cheaper (OPTANE RAM/MEMORY - sometimes you will see this referred in computer specs. Optane RAM/Memory allows this older style of drive to behave a bit more like an SSD drive.
SHD - a combination of HDD and SSD drives- in-between price
SSD - Flash-based device - faster and quieter - a bit more expensive
Note:
An SSD has little benefits for FM apart from faster loading and saving times but it will give a better computer performance. If the computer only has 128GB/256gb hard drive space then you may need extra storage. Best to get larger storage, or get a computer with both SSD and HDD and make sure the operating system is installed on the SSD and your other programmes are installed on your HDD.

Let us know if you need any help in comparing what you have found - or if we can find something that is better - and perhaps cheaper!

Hi,

I only play FM on my laptop I was looking at a HP ENVY x360 2 in 1 Laptop AMD Ryzen 7, 512 GB SSD, Will this run FM okay or is a intel core i7 better to run Fm on?

It really depends on the individual specs.... some Ryzen 7's are better than some i7's and vice versa.  If you could provide links for the computers you're looking at, I can tell you which would be the better option.

I'd go for the HP store one with the Ryzen 7: https://www.hp.com/gb-en/shop/product.aspx?id=4J955EA&opt=ABU&sel=NTB&gclid=Cj0KCQiAjc2QBhDgARIsAMc3SqSXyUp1ek0dnT1qwDucnXFNxGyGlYymAX49mUzJdTCdTycAGukODzEaAsADEALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds

The i7 does seem to score higher on the single core tests by a little bit, but the Ryzen 7 does win when it comes to multi-core benchmarks and has twice the cores.  So if you don't mind spending the extra £100 that is the one I'd go for.  But, the i7 is still excellent so if you'd rather go for the cheaper deal you're still getting a very capable machine.

Hi, looking to buy a laptop predominantly for FM. I tend to load the top division of the major European leagues and the full league system for the country I’m playing in with a large database. I have seen the one linked below recommended plenty of times, ideally I want to spend less than £500. Is this still the best available and would it run the above well?

Yep, looks like me to be the best you'll find under £500 at the moment.  It won't have any issue running the type of game setup you've stated, but as per the OP we can't comment on how your personal perception of the speed will be as this is entirely subjective and down to the individual.

Hi, I've currently got an Intel i5-4690 CPU that I'm looking to upgrade. Its been handling 14 or so playable leagues tho ideally I'd like to add some more.

Been looking at the Intel i5-12400 which is within my budget (<£200) and performs nicely according to the benchmarking thread.

Anyone got any other suggestions that I should look into? I'm going to have to buy a new motherboard + ram so any cheaper options would be welcome.

Thanks

At the sub-£200, the i5-12400F looks the best bet to me in terms of performance compared to price.  Not sure how much you saw it for, but this looks a good deal: https://www.ebuyer.com/1414626-intel-core-i5-12400f-12th-gen-alder-lake-6-core-processor-bx8071512400f

Have done a bit of research and its agrees with you that its great value for money. Cheers for the link, will probably go for it once I've decided on a motherboard

Vous avez une carte graphique intégrée de 2012, il est donc probable qu'elle ait du mal. Tout ce qui est en cours montrera une amélioration significative, mais faites-nous savoir votre budget et nous pouvons trouver quelque chose pour vous.

Hi all.

Hoping for some help please.

Looking to buy a custom desktop. I used pc specialists previously and it's lasted me well for 7 years. It still plays FM22 well but can't loads tonnes of leagues. Graphically it's fine though and it's still fairly fast. I'm flexible on who to use for the new machine, more looking for technical advice. I wouldn't want to build the PC myself so prefer a company who will build.

I'll post my current specs below as the number 1 thing I'm looking for is a big upgrade and therefore future proof myself for a few versions of the game.

Only other tasks I use the machine for are work so emails etc and Spotify/YouTube. I don't play any other pc game. It's also worth saying I have two LG ultra wide monitors that aren't gaming monitors. I say this because I'm unsure getting a crazy graphics card is a waste of money on that basis. I imagine the balance is around a card that will last but not something so good it's wasted without a high end gaming display.

This is what I've just put together as an idea for budget and spec. But I'm fairly clueless so wanted to ask the experts.

Budget is anything up to 3k I suppose.  If a recommendation comes in way under and is a clear long term upgrade then fantastic.

A couple of quick questions -- the motherboard on the new custom pc I'm looking at comes with wifi and pc specialists prompted me to remove the wifi/bluetooth card. But it doesn't look like the motherboard would have bluetooth. Having a strong signal for my headphones is really important to me. The other big auxiliary element is either having 3 HDMI ports or 2 and a DVI. As I also have a tv hooked up to the pc alongside the dual monitors.

Really appreciate any help. Thanks.

Hello, I'm finally getting round to replacing my old laptop. My friend has found these two for me so any advice would be greatly appreciated. The laptop will be used only for FM 22 and browsing. My ideal set up is the major European leagues loaded plus a large database. Thanks.

The other big auxiliary element is either having 3 HDMI ports or 2 and a DVI. As I also have a tv hooked up to the pc alongside the dual monitors.

Really appreciate any help. Thanks.

My first question is whether you're playing games other than FM, and what your other usage is?  Just that if you're only playing FM and not doing heavy duty stuff like video editing, you're spending way too much.  I'd also recommend faster RAM than 2400MHz.  With the CPU you've got, you'd probably want to go for 3600MHz.

Hello, I'm finally getting round to replacing my old laptop. My friend has found these two for me so any advice would be greatly appreciated. The laptop will be used only for FM 22 and browsing. My ideal set up is the major European leagues loaded plus a large database. Thanks.

Either are fine - both CPUs perform quite similarly but the second one does have a dedicated graphics card, so will give you more flexibility if you decide you want to play other games.

Thanks for getting back to me. Yes just FM. Photoshop is something I missed off the list of other applications I use.

Ok, my main suggestions would be:

Change the RAM to 32GB 3600MHz (you can go with 64GB, but unless your Photoshop usage is SUPER heavy, 32GB is more than enough but definitely go for the faster RAM speed).

I'd also go for a cheaper graphics card based on your usage.  The 3080 is a heavy duty gaming card and totally OTT for what you need.  The 1660 Super will be absolutely fine for what you need - as long as the outputs match what you need.  It has 1x HDMI and 2x Display Port outputs.

Not sure about the bluetooth side of it, but failing all else you can always get a USB bluetooth dongle for your headphones.

I'd still go with 3600MHz RAM rather than 3000MHz, as the RAM speed can be quite a difference maker especially with AMD CPU's.  But other than that looks good to me.

Thanks for the quick reply. I won't be playing any other games and i mainly watch the games in commentary mode. In your opinion am i worth spending the extra £100 on the gaming laptop?

In that case, I'd go with the cheaper option.

The one you posted has a better CPU and twice the RAM, but that other one at £429.97 is a fantastic deal so if your preference is to go down to that sort of price then you'll be getting an excellent laptop for the price.

I finally made the decision to go for the Honor laptop at £600, and was about to take the plunge when I noticed this for £679:

Do you think it's worth the extra £80?

It's been a while since you helped me out, so I've linked the laptop I initially asked you about below:

Thanks as always!

Is it better?  Yes.  If you can afford the extra £80, then do it.

If you're pushing things budget wise, the one at £600 is still excellent.

Hello,

Can you tell me if the new Samsung computer could make me run smoothly FM? Especially with the graphics card. Thanks Samsung Galaxy Book2 Pro 360 (13.3", i7, 16Go) | Samsung FR

It should be fine - the graphics are not that intensive - however, it's still an integrated graphics card - but you should be able to play at least on medium detail level.

As a lifelong PC user toying with the idea of getting a MacBook I wanted to see what FM looked like on the 2020 M1 MacBook Air's screen. So, having borrowed my partners, I loaded up the FM22 demo from Steam and had a go. It all looked nice and sharp until I got to a match. Despite having all graphics settings on 'high', and the the machine seemingly taking that in its stride as far as framerate goes, it didn't take long until I noticed that the graphics all looked a bit blurry - not as sharp as on my less powerful Windows laptop with graphics set to low/medium. I also notice what I perceived to be ghosting, particularly with regard to the ball movement i.e. it left a bit of a trail in its path. The other parts of the interface during the match looked totally fine - it was just the pitch, players etc.

I know that MacBooks have poor screen response times, which can be responsible for ghosting, but having read some detailed reviews on the machines - my Windows laptop has the same sort of response times and looks fine in that regard.

Then I found this post - suggesting the issue reared its head last year and, based on this experience, appears not to have been sorted. Would that be accurate?

Have you tried any of the fixes mentioned in the post?

It's not clear what you have/have not tried.

Evening all,

My laptop crashes constantly when running FM games, ever since FM20 (!) due a graphics error which I cannot solve.

Without trying to break the bank, would this spec work for purely running FM on a large database in England with all playable leagues and browsing.....

HP EliteBook 840 G4 Intel Core i5-8250U 8GB RAM 256GB SSD Windows 10 Pro Laptop, with 8th gen Intel Core i5 octa-core CPU

Thanks in advance.

The base clock speed is below the SI recommendation for FM, so I'd personally not recommend it.  What's your budget?

Thanks Kevhamster,

I was trying to keep it as low as possible, as my old laptop is fine for playing films and internet browsing, etc.... but I'll go to what I need to.  The one above is on ebay at £280 and is nearby so I can collect.

Hi guys

I am considering getting an Apple macbook partly becuase i need something a bit more portable for work and was wondering how theyu are performance wise on FM 22?

I had been looking at this one:

https://www.currys.co.uk/products/apple-macbook-pro-13.3-2020-m1-512-gb-ssd-silver-10216307.html

I currently have an Omen 16 gaming laptop but it is a little bulky for carrying around London for work and have noticed that the graphics performance on the match engine can be juttery at certain times but generally ok.

The spec on my current laptop is:

  • AMD Ryzen 7 5800H Processor
  • RAM: 16 GB / Storage: 512 GB SSD
  • Graphics: AMD Radeon RX 6600M 8 GB
  • Quad HD screen / 165 Hz

Any help or opnions are greatly appreciated

many thanks

The M1 based Macbooks are very good for FM performance.

I am very surprised your existing laptop is having jitters though as that spec should be able to handle FM without breaking a sweat.
