Hi all,

I’m looking to get a new laptop mainly for FM and browsing, but would like one that I could play other newish games on too if possible (not a big deal if not) for £500-£600.

I’ve been looking through the recent pages and came across these.

I don’t have too much knowledge on what’s good and what’s not, so if anyone has any better recommendations in the price range or cheaper then that would be great.

Within your budget, I'd go for this: https://www.box.co.uk/FA506IC-HN042W-ASUS-TUF-GAMING-A15-AMD-Ryzen-5-8GB-RAM-_4110260.html

It has the best graphics card of anything I can see under £600 and a very capable CPU to go with it.

No. You need a "gamer laptop" that has a good graphic card (like GeForce) and a multi-core processor (like Intel i5, i7 or higher). The laptop linked above has none.

You won't get much with £200 to be honest and I'd avoid that one.

The best one I can find at that price is this refurb model, which still won't be great: https://www.laptopstation.co.uk/deals/hp-15-gw0502sa-amd-8gb-1tb-fhd/

Wrong.  You don't need a gaming laptop for FM, nor is a dedicated graphics card needed, especially if just playing in 2D.

A good CPU is definitely recommended, but FM will play on a very wide range of computers, albeit the speed of processing will be affected by what CPU it's running.

Hi all,

I am just wondering does anyone have experience of playing FM22 on the M1 Macbook air or indeed the new M2 Macbook air? I am just wondering how does it cope with the match engine and does it run the game smoothly? I have heard about the new Air throttling but would be interested to get peoples views on this. I need a macbook air for work and I am curious/hopeful about FM22/FM23 running on it. Also interested to see if FM games in the future are compatible with the M2 chips natively. All views welcome. Thanks

When the M1 came out, it was one of the best performing laptop chips at that time, based on the FM benchmarking thread.  I've not seen anything specific about the M2, but I'd have to assume it's better still.

SI explicitly states the need of a graphic card in FM *minimum* requirements. Unless you want to play FM with a 1970s pong look and feel... Poor advice.

If you want to take over the thread with the time it takes and be the advice giver, feel free.  I seem to remember you yourself were asking for advice only a few days ago on this very thread.

Just to reiterate, I would not recommend anything which does not meet the specs required to run the game.

The Motobility Radeon and Intel GMA it mentions are both integrated graphics to the CPU, and old ones at that. Many of the modern integrated GPUs are more than enough for FM's 3D graphics, even at higher settings.  As long as the system allows 256MB RAM for graphics usage, which basically all integrated GPU's in modern laptops do, then it's fine to run the game from the graphics perspective, although with some you will need to turn graphics settings down.  With the 2D match engine, it's almost irrelevant.

And I can personally vouch for this with my Ryzen 5 2500U with it's integrated GPU that I've played the game on when away from my desktop PC.

We are talking about the minimum spec, you are talking about well what you've made up as a minimum spec.

The game can run fine on modern integrated GPU at medium graphics settings.

@kevhamster and @EdL - You guys are giving poor advice. FM runs poorly under minimum requirements. It needs to be a good machine, or you will be setting new gamers for frustration.

Here's the thing.  A guy came in with a budget of £200, asking about the Celerons.  I steered him away from that - yes, the Athlons aren't fantastic but will give him a better performance for the money he can afford to spend, which is what we are here for.  I did set his expectations that it wouldn't be fantastic, but he's coming off the back of a 10 year old laptop so he'll almost definitely see an improvement compared to what he's currently getting.

As I said, if you want to take the thread over be my guest because I'm just about done.

Hi folks!  My eyes are buggered currently (bloody corneas..! 😛😁), so find it hard to view the editor when using my laptop.

I've been looking therefore for a cheap tablet just to use when I'm not on my PC.  Are there any that can access Steam and the FN22 editor does anyone know?  I've been eyeing the Galaxy Tab A7 or A8, but can't find any evidence of Steam being accessible on them or FM editor compatibility!

My trusty, 6 year old PC is starting to give in. Needs booting 3-4 times to get to windows, and CMOS error messages and forced restarts now and again.

Always had custom built desktops, however am considering a laptop.  Looking to run LOTS of leagues on FM (100 nations+) and need a decent amount of storage for music, so probably looking at around 1tb ssd. Won't use it for much else though, and no other games as tend to use Xbox for anything graphically taxing.

As far as the number of leagues goes, this is non-negotiable as far is I'm concerned. HOWEVER, I currently run this set up on my current pc (CPU: AMD FX 8350 Black Edition, 16gb 1600mhz RAM, GT740) and the speed is generally ok, although if I could get it faster, great.

Budget not a massive driver, but obviously the cheaper the better.

No. Celeron will not work. It needs to be Intel i5 (or higher) or AMD CPU. Read minimum requirements.

Mate, people in this thread are giving advice for free, and less than a week ago you were asking them for advice yourself. Not only that, but pretty much every statement you've made here is nonsense. If you don't want to follow their advice, then fair enough, but don't try giving it yourself when you clearly haven't got a clue.

@kevhamster / @EdL, cheers for the advice and help you give people, it is much appreciated.

The Galaxy Tabs appear to be based off of Android, so I'm not sure on compatibility with FM.  I think they used to run FM Touch, but I'm not sure about compatibility since FM Touch was discontinued.

You can get tablets which run Windows, but to get ones with a halfway decent spec you'd be paying a lot of money.  And with the CPU's they use, I'd have to check with the devs here as to whether FM would actually run on them.

Something like this would do the job - excellent CPU, very capable integrated graphics. https://www.currys.co.uk/products/acer-aspire-vero-av1551-15.6-laptop-intel-core-i7-1-tb-grey-10229949.html

Thanks Kev - and the one from Box would run FM okay in 3D etc?

Hi guys,

I'm sure I'm the 1000th person to ask but my current laptop has died a death.

I'm looking for a new laptop but I'm pretty useless at this sort of stuff. I'm looking for something that I can use for light work use (tax returns, internet browsing, the real basics) and also run football manager solidly.

I usually load around 5 nations, the top 3 leagues in each and run a large database. Budget of around £500-£700 would be ideal. Run on 3d match but low graphics is fine.

If anyone could point me in the right direction I'd very much appreciate it!

Thanks in advance

This seems to be a new price reduction.  If you haven't already bought one, this is actually an incredible deal for £200.

As a comparison before I purchase, would the £200 one mentioned above and the Lenovo below work just as well as the Acer Aspire?

Thanks fella, I was looking at Surface Pro 3 for just over 300 on Amazon but as I'm pretty much just looking at something to edit with, I'm trying to find a tablet or 2 in 1 maybe for under 200 quid if it's actually possible. :)

No. the others are better.  But, if your budget is £200 then the new one I linked is almost definitely the best you'll find.

If you can go up to £400. the Lenovo is a cracking deal.

Cheers for this, @kevhamster.

Having looked at the space I'm currently using on my existing desktop, I reckon I can afford to drop to 512gb SSD, so I've been having a look at options.

The best I've found is this;

What is it you're wanting to know?  If your laptop will run the game?

In short, almost definitely but I don't know exactly which processor you have as there are many i3's which have been released and I can't see any with a 2.33GHz clock speed.

https://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=Intel+Core+i3-2350M+%40+2.30GHz&id=758 has a 2.3GHz clock speed, so perhaps it's this?  It also has the  Intel HD3000 IGPU, so this does seem likely.

Assuming I'm correct - Will it run FM?  Yes.  But, it won't be quick, and you'll need to turn the 3D settings down to the lower presets to get a smooth framerate if playing in 3D.  My suggestion would be to download the demo and see how you find it.

Hi, I currently don’t have a laptop - and have been playing fm22 on my Xbox for a while. Looking to make a step up to the full game, so need a laptop. I would also use the laptop for school work (such as word, and all the other office apps). I have an idea of a computer to buy, but just looking for some real confirmation as to whether it would be alright.

Yep, will be absolutely fine.  Very good CPU in that, and will handle 3D match graphics at medium to high settings.

Brilliant, thanks so much. As to addons that I would download externally, would this still be ok, I’d imagine yes due to the 1T SSD but again, looking for confirmation.

Assuming you mean things like kits, logos, custom database files etc.  In which case, yes - 1TB would give you plenty of room for all that kind of stuff.
