Hey all, for a budget of 1,000 pounds (pound sign not loading lol ) what is the most ideal laptop for FM ??

 

I am currently using my Mrs' Mac book pro 2022 which is 2k plus. 

 

I obviously want to get my own Laptop and I can see a Mac Book Pro 2022 for 1.2k. Are Mac Books worth the price ? Or can you get one for less than 1,000 that does the job equally as well or better than a Mac?

2022 Apple MacBook Pro 13”, M2 Processor, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD, Space Grey available for 1.2k

 

I wouldn't use it for anything other than FM and watching things online. Key components for me are Battery life and ventilation so that it doesn't overheat. I'm not bothered about 3D match engine but it would be nice to have 3D highlights or occasionally watch a game in 3D. 

Or is a Desktop more suitable ? I understand its stationary etc but would you get more bang for your buck with a desktop PC designed for gaming ? Where I could play games like CSGO, FIFA etc

Based on current prices, the better deals do seem to be with laptops at the moment.  The caveat to that is laptops are far less upgradeable then desktops, so it's all down to whether that's important to you or not.

And if you are looking to play FIFA, then I would recommend getting a Windows PC or laptop with a dedicated graphics card, as although the integrated GPU's in the M1/M2 based Macs are very good as far as integrated graphics go, I imagine they'd probably struggle with FIFA which does require fairly strong specs to play at a good framerate.

Re: the question of "Are Macbooks worth the price" is really down to what you're wanting from the computer.  Apple computers excel at things like graphic design, video and audio editing - basically very specialist functions.  And of course they are known for very good build quality. 

If you're looking for general usage or gaming though, a Windows machine is generally much better value for money.  You'll generally spend far less on a Windows computer as you would on an  Apple machine with an equivalent spec.

Laptops are still PC's, just portable ones.  So it's hard to know how it would compare with the performance of your PC as I have no idea what the spec of your PC is.  Depending on how old your PC is, you may even find laptops from the last couple of years actually outperform it.

There are some options out there in the refurb market, but nothing under £300 which is going to be great.

It'll open a program called the DirectX diagnostic tool and the window that it loads up will look like this:

Found this laptop for £399 from Costco (if you're a member or have a friend that is...like me) I wondered if this was good/quick enough to play FM21/22 and 23?

To be honest, I'm still playing FM16 (long save) on my PC and looking for a laptop to play FM17/18/19 and 20 as it will be a few years before I catch up to FM23!

Hi;

After a new desktop - it's been a few years and my son's PC is now chugging, so time to hand this one down to him.

Currently on an Asus i5-6400 with 16GB DDR4 RAM and GTX750 2GB GFX Card. I won't need a new monitor.

I usually run 50-odd nations when playing FM and can cope with the speed (slow around end of transfer windows, but pretty good for the rest of the time).

Ideally I'm looking for something around the £650 mark, prepared to go a little over. I play FM extensively, dabble with Elite: Dangerous which my current setup handles, but occasionally freezes requiring a power button restart when I'm engaged in particularly big battles, and Cities: Skylines.

Odyssey doesn't seem to be very well optimised.  It has some interesting ideas, but I think Frontier dropped the ball a bit with it.

I still just like running Passenger missions in a Beluga, or going exploring in an Asp Explorer!

That's a similar spec to my desktop PC (although I've got the standard 3600 rather than the 3600x and the 1660 Super).  It's a decent spec.  What sort of price are you being charged for it?

Judging by this video (time code 3:19) you could probably run 7 nations with a large database and reach a four star rating. Regardless, the Ryzen 5 3600x is still a good CPU and the rest of this PC's spec isn't bad either.

do you think my MacBook Pro (2017) will cope with the new FM? Latest one I played was 21, loads fine 4/5 star rating with 5 leagues loaded. Can’t remember if I could watch 3D, I think I could but noisy. Or is there would be a better option for £5/600? Only if necessary.

The CPU will run the game, although it won't be massively quick.

The question mark though is the OS.  FM23 requires MacOS 11 or higher, so if 10.13.6 is the newest OS it's compatible with then FM23 simply won't run on it.

pretty sure a 2017 mac should be updatable, to it, 10.13 is very out of date now - should be updating anyway, certainly 10.13 doesn't receive security fixes anymore

I'm looking to replace my old 15.6" notebook with a new 14" model for more portability. My eyes went on two specific ASUS models, but I'm happy to listen any suggestion about other notebook in the 14" form factor region.

Apparently ASUS introduced a few options to prevent or reduce this problem, but we're going into uncharted territories with OLED in notebboks, so the display longevity in the Vivobook 14 it's not clear.

- CPU: Ryzen 5 5600H vs Ryzen 7 5800HS. Which one is better? What is the gap in performance between them?

- GPU: RTX 3050 for both models. A bit meh, not a great graphics card. It should be sufficient to run the game at the highest settings. I'm not a triple AAA gamer, so I hope to play in high presets in games like FM, F1 Manager and FIFA for the next 4-5 years. Maybe even Crusader Kings or Cities Skylines, but they aren't on the top of my list.

- RAM: both have 16GB. However, it's soldered to the motherboard on the Vivobook, so no upgrades for it. The Zephyrus G14 have 8GB soldered to the mo-bo and 8GB separated, so there's room for future upgrades, which is nice if I want to increase the life span of the PC.

- Price: last, but not least, it's an important discriminating factor. I could buy the Vivobook 14 Pro for €793 in my region, while the Zephyrus G14 is priced at €966. I'd like to stay below the €1000 threshold, so they both tick the option, but which one to choose in terms of durability, battery life, display, processor and general build quality? Should I bite the bullet and go for the Zephyrus G14 or just pick the Vivobook 14?

Not much between the two CPU's, although the Ryzen 7 does edge it.

As you say, OLEDs on laptops aren't that common, so hard to judge.  IPS panels are known for good contrast, colour accuracy and wide viewing angles though, so I don't think you'd have anything to worry about from an IPS display.  OLED panels also tend to be more power hungry, so I'd suspect that the one with the IPS panel would have the better battery life assuming both come with the same battery.

Both are ASUS so I'd expect similar build quality for both. 

In your shoes, I'd probably go for the Zephyrus of the two.

The RTX 3050 will be fine for what you're looking to do.

I can't find anything to beat those as the prices you've given.  14" laptops with a dedicated graphic card are harder to come by, and tend to be well over the budget you've stated.

Hi Kev. You recommended this almost exactly a year ago. I'm getting a BSOD and I think there is a decent chance I'll get to return it and my money back. So I'm looking for a replacement and probably an upgrade. My thought is I've had a free year out of it so sticking £300 or £400 onto the budget to around £900/£1000 is absolutely fine. Means it makes it slightly more future proofed too. I've had zero issues with the laptop until the last couple of weeks. 

 

Appreciate any help you can give.

Evening guys. Looking for new laptop. For me it will be mainly FM and some Netflix / Amazon / Disney Etc streaming. 
My wife might use it for some very basic level photo editing (just a hobby) I’ve been back and forth over a gaming laptop or not, I like this one as the screen is sizeable, and I believe it will be quieter than a gaming laptop? 
Will this be good enough to run FM? Or am I overpaying for what I am getting I am not too knowledgeable about Computers/Laptops.

Actually asking for a friend, but he said his laptop is "slow, like very very slow" and keeps dropping FM23. His specs are attached (I know nothing about computers). The laptop is brand new bought just to use FM. Any ideas? Thanks

I can't remember the specs off the top of my head - but my gut says that is below the minimum recommended. That is not to say the game won't run on it - it might - but the experience may not be anywhere close to ideal (which I believe is what your friend is describing)

Yes, it will run FM23.

As per the OP, we can't comment on how many leagues it will run to your satisfaction.

It's not below the minimum specs, but that processor is about as weak as you can get on a current laptop.  Intel Celerons are very low power CPU's which aren't really any good for anything more than very basic usage and web browsing.  And I don't imagine the 3D match engine will run at all well on it.

It's a decent laptop.  I'm not sure I'd call it overpriced with that CPU in it, and it should be quieter than a gaming laptop and if you're after a larger screen it's probably about as good as you'll get for the price for a non-gaming laptop.

https://www.box.co.uk/FX706HCB-HX147W-ASUS-TUF-Gaming-F17-Intel-Core-i5-16GB-R_4341533.html - that's a gaming laptop alternative at the same price.  The CPU isn't quite as strong as the one from Argos, but it's still very decent and has a dedicated graphics card.
