Platinum
Generally speaking are laptops with GPUs quite heavy? Earlier last year I got great advice from Smurf and Kevhamster which lead to me buying a custom built PC from PCSpecialists with a £1200 budget and it was a great buy so thank you both. Now it's time for me to get a laptop. I've got a smaller budget this time and ideally wont spend more than £600. Im looking for a light weight laptop that can fit in a backpack that can play FM (ideally on medium graphics at a minimum), do general browsing, music and light weight programming where a GPU isnt needed. I play with a lot of leagues loaded on FM and I accept that it will be slower on my laptop, that's not a problem. I'm going to start having a look at laptops today but if you have any suggestions, including PcSpecialist, it would be great to hear them
DamianJMcGrath
Hi all, I'm looking for a laptop that I can take travelling. As a result, I have a few requirements. 1. A 13 or 15 inch screen. I will be using it on planes and trains a lot, so the lighter and smaller the better, however, I don't want FM to be ridiculously tiny on a small screen, so I'm thinking maybe 15 inch is the sweet spot? Due to the fact it'll be on my lap occasionally, it'd be good if it didn't get too hot, or too loud in quiet train coaches or overnight planes! 2. I will be using it almost exclusively for Microsoft Word, browsing the Internet, playing FM and some smaller games such as Stardew Valley, and watching videos via VLC or Plex. 3. It has to be able to connect to HDMI as a very significant reason for getting a new laptop is to connect it to hotel TVs so I can watch my own media when I'm bored stuck in random hotels! 4. Storage capacity isn't that important to me, as I have a need to store around 1 TB of files on it, so I think I'll need to use a USB stick or SD card anyway, so the storage it comes with doesn't really matter. 5. I want to be able to play FM in reasonable comfort, and normally only play with 4 or 5 European leagues with England in full detail down to the lowest league and the others top league only. I play mainly on 2D with goal highlights in 3D. I don't expect instant loading, my current Laptop does about 30-45 seconds loading every time I Continue. I don't have a specific budget, but I'm thinking I don't need to go crazy. As long as my requirements are met, I don't need anything higher than that. So, the cheaper the better! I probably have £800 to spend but I have a load of other things I can use the money on! It'd just be good knowing what options are out there or what specific things I should look for. Thanks

That's entirely subjective and also down to how good your eyesight is. But as long as it's full HD resolution, I'd say it'd likely be fine. The Macbook Air has a 13" screen and nobody has complained about the screen on that, that I've seen at least.

It's probably set to run at less than peak performance when not plugged in to minimise battery usage. Big Easy
Any comments on the following? Or anything similarly priced but better spec? I know little about graphics cards so do these work? Rule of thumb with the Mac max out as many things as you can within your budget Processor is key. Then Ram 8gb should be fine but try for 16. Then ssd min 512 As mac's cannot be upgraded get the best you can afford now.

Pool10
Hello mates ! Im looking for new budget laptop to play FM22. In my country this laptop goes around 650-700$ which is my $ limit.
MeatHelmet
Hi guys, Just got back into playing FM after a very long time away. My 2015 Macbook Pro just about runs FM22, slowly and the games in 3d absolutely blitz the battery and set the fans off. Looking for a windows laptop, maximum price of £500 really as my budget. Would like to run a couple of leagues, and watch the matches in 3d if possible. As per the OP, we can't comment on how you'll find the speed with the setup you want as it's subjective. But based on what you've said, I don't think you'll find better within that budget. But, if you post the URLs of some electronics stores in your region, I'll look and see if there's any better. In saying that - it meets the minimum spec and should be ok for FM. Graphics, should be ok on 3D but you'll need to play with the quality settings in-game to find a suitable balance that you're happy with. I can't find anything better - is £500 your absolute budget? Adamm90
Looking at two options, not for myself, but restricted to Argos. It’s not for FM or gaming, just general day to day use. https://www.argos.co.uk/product/9394078 or https://www.argos.co.uk/product/9559466?clickPR=plp:11:
kevhamster
https://www.argos.co.uk/product/9394078 Depends really whether you plan to install large amounts of programs and other stuff, but if not I'd go for this one as it's got the newer and better CPU.
DarJ
On 04/04/2022 at 18:00, james2609 said: Can anyone recommend a laptop within the budget of £600-£1500 I want it to run FM smoothly but my main priority is the noise. I want the fans to be as quiet as possible. I currently have a HP pavillion gaming 15 and it runs FM smooth as butter but the fan noise can get loud Asus TUF gaming F15. (Make sure you get the 2022 version if you decide to go for it) You can get that for about £1400. You get the intel i7 12700H so you get 14 cores and 20 threads (perfect if you're going to use it for something else that relies on CPU power) and you get the 3060 graphic card. If you're only going to use it for FM and other day to day stuff then you could look for something cheaper but if you want the best of the best in your price range then the Asus should work for you Edited April 8, 2022 by DarJ
DamianJMcGrath
I've seen what looks like a deal on Amazon, and a few review websites suggest it's fine. I mainly play on 2D settings for FM, and need to run standard Office applications, Visio for process maps for work, and I'll use it a lot for watching videos via VLC. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Lenovo-IdeaPad-Laptop-Intel-Windows/dp/B0949J85D3?ref_=Oct_d_obs_d_429886031&pd_rd_w=ZKABf&pf_rd_p=f846ee14-1ba8-4e8b-880b-8fd2aa9e3010&pf_rd_r=RNBPN0B05AJ6EFF7C19H&pd_rd_r=10c40eb3-6330-4871-b43f-50433b362b94&pd_rd_wg=Vh5L2&pd_rd_i=B0949J85D3 Is there something major wrong with this at £379? Thanks The main issue for me is it doesn't specify which version of the i5 it has - based on the stated processor speed and that it says it has Iris XE graphics, that would suggest it's the i5-1135G7. If it does have that, then it's a very good deal. As it has Windows 10 S, you will need to take it out of S mode to install things like Steam etc: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/switching-out-of-s-mode-in-windows-4f56d9be-99ec-6983-119f-031bfb28a307 Edited April 10, 2022 by kevhamster

I mean, if you can afford the extra £100 you'd still be getting a good deal.
Fusss
So I’m hopefully returning from a FM hiatus since 2017, having played every year since CM 99/00!! Kids, life in general happened, they are now out of baby stage and happily sleeping at night, so I find myself with some time as my wife works a few evenings a week. My previous laptop is a shocker, it didn’t really cope that well with FM17 so it’s fit for the bin. I’m obviously looking for the FM holy grail of a future proof laptop that doesn’t break the bank and can run a reasonable amount of leagues with 3D pitch option. Who isn’t haha. Budget ideally under £500 (or around that figure), now I know that is a really tall order, so I will definitely consider refurbished as to be honest it will be used for FM only alongside general web browsing etc. I remember from many years ago of looking on this thread that certain CPU’s were better for FM, e.g with a U at the end??? I may be wrong there but is this still the case? Ideally something with a decent processer and dedicated graphics card that will see me good for the next few versions. https://www.laptopsdirect.co.uk/refurbished-acer-aspire-5-a515-56g-core-i5-1135g7-8gb-512gb-mx350-15.6-inch-a2-nx.a1kek.003/version.asp How's that looking? Good value for money. Decent CPU. Modest graphics card, but that's all you need for FM. To answer the other question, usually CPU models with a "U" at the end signify being ultra-low power processors - so great for portable general use laptops as they don't heat up much, but prone to throttling so not great for anything gaming related. Thanks mate What reference processors should I really be looking at? What graphics cards are not entry level without being the top end ones? Where the happy medium spec wise? Is there a certain card I should be looking at for better performance?

What you have there already is one of the better laptop processors. As you're looking at under £500, you're not realistically going to get better. https://www.box.co.uk/NH.QBFEK.006-Acer-Aspire-7-AMD-Ryzen-5-8GB-RAM-512GB-_3557427.html Although this has the "U" at the end of the CPU, it's not quite the same with the more recent Ryzen CPU's. This one doesn't score quite as high on the single core performance, but the multi-core performance does beat the i5 in the other one. And the GTX 1650 is definitely a stronger graphics card than the MX350. But it is £150 more in cost, and as I said the one you've linked is a good deal for what you're looking for anyway. FM is not a graphically demanding game and a lot of modern CPU's will handle the 3D graphics quite well with their integrated graphics.
Wighty0
Hello I’ve been searching for a little while to get a cheapish laptop that can run the top 5 leagues with view only for the lower leagues with low to medium 3d graphics with a budget of around £200-£350 I’m looking at the Lenovo ideapad 3 but if there are other options I’m open to look at them thank you in advance
Scoham
Looking into getting a new laptop as mine is nearly 8 years old. Mainly use it for FM, general internet use and Microsoft Office. Budget is under £1k, want something that’ll last for a good number of years like my current one has. Minimum requirements are: - Eight core processor - 16GB RAM - SSD 500GB - 14 to 16 inch screen - HDMI and classic USB (is that 3.0?) - Avoid an integrated graphics card, ideally play FM on the highest settings (but maybe things have moved on and that’s now possible on integrated?) - Current laptop is fairly heavy so a lighter one would be a bonus - DVD/CD drive would be a bonus but very rarely use so could buy a portable drive if necessary Found these three after filtering for those requirements but wondering if there’s better value for money out there. If those specs can be improved on without a much bigger budget then even better. https://www.hp.com/gb-en/shop/product.aspx?id=4J955EA&opt=ABU&sel=NTB https://www.currys.co.uk/products/lenovo-ideapad-5-pro-16-laptop-amd-ryzen-7-512-gb-ssd-grey-10233246.html https://www.dell.com/en-uk/shop/laptops/inspiron-15-plus/spd/inspiron-15-7510-laptop/cn51703sc11

Matches the specs of the Dell Inspiron but is a dedicated gaming laptop and cheaper.

jonnysnipe
So I have started to go away more with work so need to pull the trigger on a laptop as the one I have barely starts. £600 budget ideally with finance options, longevity for the laptop for me would be the top priority and it would be used for just casual streaming and FM. I was tempted by the MacBook air m1 but can't see the benefit in paying 300 quid extra for that just because it's apple - I would be interested to hear the opinion on this laptop because I can get it interest free for £36 a month Edited April 17, 2022 by jonnysnipe
glenjamin
How do I turn off advice from my assistant manager during matches? Every single game I'm advised to 'play for set pieces' which I duly click 'Always Ignore', only to be hounded by it the very next game as well as countless useless advice.
