FM and apple silicon

Yes, 8GB RAM is plenty for FM.

In terms of whether you should buy the Air or the Pro, it's very hard to say.  We only have benchmarks for the M1 based Pro at the moment and not the Air, but some people on this thread have reported good performance with the Air as well.

There are multiple benchmarks done with the MacBook Air in the performance benchmark thread. See for yourself in the thread. The list hasn’t been updated with those benchmarks yet.

Okay, we believe this is an issue related to a problem with the how the upscaling should be working on Mac - it's not doing so when the game first launches, so would suggest if you change your resolution in game (either directly or via changing say into windowed) this should then rectify this and work as intended.

Let us know how you get on. Thanks.

I can confirm that I have experienced the MacBook getting hotter, the work around fixed the issue for me. Hope this issue gets fixed in the next update.

How do you force open it in windowed mode?

And how/why does this make a difference?

Open Steam, go to the game (don't start the game yet), go to its settings, select properties then add -windowed to the startup options (interface has changed slightly in the newest Steam-update, so if you use an old one, it might look a bit different, still look for the startup options). I usually change back to full screen mode during the first match.

About the how and why, a couple posts back @Neil Brock stated that it had something to do with upscaling.

When I go to FM21 Properties within Steam there isn’t an option to add “Windowed” to the startup options. Am I looking in the wrong place?

Open your Steam library, go to FM21 and click on the 'wheel' and select properties

Then find something called start up options and type in -windowed

It needs to be --windowed (double hyphen)

Thank you, do I need to allow the game to open in windowed mode every time now and amend to full screen in game to avoid the lag issues?

Honestly I'm not totally sure as I didn't work on this area myself, but my guess would be yes

It’s utterly brilliant!

Can you state your game setup ,leauges/divisions/database size?

How many years into the game etc.

I would clearly expect great performance from PC equivalent price, in some cases.

Lads, we need perspective.

@Smurf, what would you say is the best machine for under $2000 to play FM21 on overall, for long saves more than multi-leagues...

Definitely get something great. I will have a look but give a few days as I am in chrimbo mode.

Not even close to your budget. You could do a lot better with a custom build.

Hi guys,

Good to see that everyone is enjoying their new MacBook. I've just upgraded to a MB Pro M1 and it's absolutely amazing. It's also the first laptop where I can play FM with OK graphics. The only problem (and big problem) is that my MB Pro crashes and reboots itself after an hour or so. Playing it via steam. I've also commented on this thread, where a person seems to have the exact same issue:

Would really come in handy if anyone has a solution for this. Thank you in advance!

I've admittedly not played a lot of FM over the Xmas period but it has been open in the background quite a lot, it hasn't crashed for me. I will try and play some over next few days and will report back if I get any crashes.

Just received the MB Pro M1 today (16 GB RAM). What should I say, Apple absolutely made some amazing development there.

Already played a few matches in 3D and it runs smoother than on my 16-inch with the 5500M 8GB.

Set everything to high settings and the fans aren't even kicking on. I'm absolutely impressed, smooth like butter.

Every other windows device would make a damn fan noise like the 16-inch. I was confused about the quietness here haha ;).

Will sell my 16-inch MBP now. Love that new device, can not wait for Apple to get even more development into their new chips.

BTW: Using my external 5K display (LG Ultrafine 5k)

Awesome! I use my M1 Air on the couch a lot and I never have to worry about battery life. So that’s also a bonus when you are not using it with with your 5K display.

Can you imagine the next gen Apple Silicon in the 16 inch chassis?

I can imagine the price.

And for that, I'd gladly pay cheaper for something of similar quality and be plugged in on the couch.

Can we all please start talking leagues ...

How many leagues can you run ... let's see the star performance level... How many leagues are view only or playable

How many player's in the database?

All I'm seeing is excitement that you can run FM in 3D ....

I can run my 60+k database on my Macbook Air 2016 as I do cloud gaming between my PC and Laptop.

I play with all international and domestic competition detail levels set to "Senior Competitive Match," which gives it a single star game speed.

The processing breaks on match days are much faster, with no fans kicking on and some warmth, as opposed to actual heat on my previous laptop, an MSI GL62M 7RE-623 with i7 - 7700HQ CPU (2.80 GHz - 3.80 GHz) with 32GB RAM.

On my old laptop, I would run the same detail level on 17 leagues from 9 countries: England (4), Germany (3), Italy (2), France (2), Spain (2), Netherlands (1), Portugal (1), Argentina (1), Brazil (1) with a half star rating for game speed.

On the Mac Book Pro, I have 33 leagues from 26 countries (with some modifications coming).

How it will do five years in? TBD.

In the post. The primary difference, I believe, is the 8 core processor on the MBP over the 4 core processor in the MSI.

Most modern processors in low to mid range processors would handle this quit quite easily,  certainly s €999 laptop of most would handle quite easily.

Yeah, but there are Surface users, Razer users, Dell users et al who all suffer from the same confirmation bias.

I've run FM21, with my 26 countries and 54 leagues save, synced through Onedrive from my custom desktop on Razer Stealth 13 11th Gen, Surface Book 3 and my works XPS 13 11th Gen and they are equally silent and smooth like butter with a large game loaded. The Surface Book 3 is probably the weakest, given it's 10th Gen Intel processor and lack of IRIS, but it's entirely playable on all three.

Apple have done an outstanding job, the Intel and AMD response will of course be strong and that's excellent for the overwhelming majority who aren't using the Apple Ecosystem and have suffered from Intel's laziness in recent years. AMD and Intel haver rocked the boat this year, 2021 should be interesting, especially with Microsoft the same ARM architecture as Apple to create their own custom chips too.

Only FM. Luckily when I'm playing in window mode the probleem seems to be gone, or at least my MB doesn't crash anymore. I do get a crash report every time I close FM, but I can live with that haha.
