just a quick one I guess: 

Which color-settings controls the background for the news-items in the inbox?

For the main box - <colour name="inbox_content_background">  

for the inner ones - <colour name="inbox_attachment_background">

If you want to edit the box graphics used, it can be found at.....  graphics/boxes/custom/inbox attachment
