I'm not hyped for this at all. I think I'm burnt out and I think more importantly the players will be too

Lack of fans will hamper this as well I think.

AJ you are one miserable guy. A break from Arsenal will be good for you.

Yeah, not looking forward to an international tournament is a sign of misery

It's got nothing to do with Arsenal. I've enjoyed plenty of tournaments in the past irrespective of what Arsenal were doing.

I just think I'm burnt out with football due to it being on for pretty much an entire year non stop and I think the quality will be the lowest it's been for ages, which in some ways is good preparation for the next World Cup which is going to be a disaster

As someone that doesn't really gaf about club football but loves international football it's great to have a tournament to watch for the first time since the 2019 AFCON. Can't wait to have a month of not having to think about ****ing Chelsea too :D

2010 was dreadful with very few redeeming features

Er, what?

  • Uruguay v Ghana chaos
  • Tshabalalalala!!
  • England being absolutely hopeless
  • Spain finally winning it after Howard Webb's horrific refereeing of the final
  • The Jabulani ball going all over the place
  • North Korea calling up an outfield player instead of a third choice keeper, then only being able to play him in goal
  • Paraguay making the quarter finals for the first time
  • Brazil losing their heads against the Dutch
  • Rooney getting booked against the Platinum Stars XI
  • New Zealand being the only unbeaten team but still going out in the groups
  • Raymond Domenech having a massive paddy and refusing to shake anyone's hand
  • That Nigerian lad missing an open goal from two yards out
  • Robbie Earle being sacked by ITV for ticket touting
  • Maradona picking his mate up front for Argentina even though he was about 40
  • That Maicon goal that bent in from out by the corner flag

And that's a bad World Cup.

Didn't the French team go on (or threaten to go on) strike too? :D

Other than that, we also had Forlan looking like the only one who knew where that ball was going to go and Germany went a great run with a number of young players who would go on to become mainstays for years (although I understand people in England didn't necessarily like that :D).

It was my first World Cup too so I'll always have a soft spot for that.

I think Domenech sent Anelka home and then the rest of them refused to train for a day or two.  Seem to remember Evra having a massive row with him.

The fitness coach throwing his accreditation into a bush in fury is the thing that sticks with me :D

"Nice to hear your own fans booing you" also a great England moment

That whole 2010 tournament for England is like one long bad dream.  Capello making them all stay in the desert miles from anywhere.  Rob Green letting that goal slip through him in the opener.  Rooney mouthing off down the camera against Algeria.  Scraping through against Slovenia but holding the ball in the corner at 1-0 just as USA were scoring in the other game so that we threw away top spot.  I think that Slovenia game was also the one where John Terry tried to head the ball away while he was lying face down on the pitch.  The ghost goal against Germany, then completely losing our heads in the second half when we still could have equalised.  Just a complete disaster.

The dying embers of the 'Golden Generation' who all hated each other, **** them all.

Having said that, if we had a fit Rio instead of having to play Upson or Carragher things might have been better...

Oh god, I totally forgot Heskey injuring Ferdinand in training before the tournament had even started :D

Capello trying to call Scholes up the week before even though he hadn't played for England for six years

Then Carragher coming out of retirement, but then retiring again the day that the squad got home.

And the squad release descending into farce because Twitter was a new thing at the time and the players were all tweeting that they were in/out before the official announcement

Also I think that was the tournament with the Sun front page - "HAVANA LAUGH!"

They crept up on them all with the long lens while they were smoking in the airport... HOW DARE THEY ENJOY CIGARS WHEN THEY HAVEN'T WON IT FOR US?!

Laying into people like Stephen Warnock who never even got off the bench.

2010 was the worst big tournament I remember.

I have more fond memories of 2010 than 2002, for example (maybe cos of the time difference) but yeah the quality wasn't amazing. Some fantastic goals though.

France 98 is what got me into football in the first place so that will always be 'my' tournament.

98>14>18>06>10>02 for me, Clive.

Euro's it would be 04>16>08>00>12. 2008 probably the most fun objectively but harder to care as much when your rubbish team is at home...

Haha, the "Capello Index" as well :D

When he put his name to a commercial sports data product that basically said half of the England players were terrible

Oh Fabio, he'd been so sensible and it had gone well until then. Handled the Terry captaincy removal well, his callups were all sensible, then the Index stuff happened and the tournament was a shambles :(

Euro 00 was the best international tournament of all time

2002 was great for me because of hype before the games during school and then the classes ending early when we played.

2006 and were 2014 the best for me. 2010 probably the worst, I'd rate 2002 and 1998 equally good, with 2018 slightly above the two.

As for Euros, I think Euro 2000 was the best. Probably because it was the last tournament we were relevant in.

I think the only reason I liked 2010 that much was because that was the first tournament me and my classmates actually followed. It was fun discussing something other than Cricket for once.

Then again, 2014 was even better because by that point all of us were interested. We even made small flags of countries that we wanted to see win and would make fun of each other when the team they were supporting lost. That was especially hilarious as more than half the students were supporting Brazil. :D

Italia 90 my all time favourite.  As well as us doing well you had Gazzas tears, Roger Milla goals and celebrations, Lothar Mattheus dominating, Beckenbauer on the sidelines, Nessun Dorma, Toto Scillachi coming from nowhere for the Italians, Rijkaard/Voller spat with Rijkaard spitting on him twice, the infamous Cameroon group hit job on Caniggia on their way to a shock win, Ireland reaching the quarter finals after drawing lots to finish ahead of the Netherlands in the groups.  Plus a ton of stuff I've forgotten. Just a shame the final was *****.

I know you've mentioned it but "Dutch turning the final into Mortal Kombat" might have been a bit more appropriate :D

shame as they were a really good team up to then

For me the Euros rank like this:

92 -> 96 -> 04 -> 00 -> 12 -> 16 -> 08

Euro 92 was great with Denmark, Thomas Hassler, Pearce v Boli and England being crap.

Euro 96 was obviously one of the greats for England specifically, but a lot of the games were a bit 'meh',  Poborsky though

Euro 04 was enjoying watching Greece scumming their way to win it, Gerrard's backpass, the Ronaldo wink etc.

Euro 00 I remember England v Portugal being great for about 20 minutes until it all fell to pieces. So much hope dashed so quickly. Phil Neville giving away a pen against Romania and for some reason Nigel Martyn being in goal not to save it. Golden goal in the final too.

Euro 12 the goalscorers from England's first two games sum it up a bit - Lescott, Carroll, Walcott and Welbeck :D

Euro 16 too many teams and even the delight of Wales and N.Ireland just couldn't keep me that interested, even as England faltered. Ostensibly should be much higher, just showed I'd largely lost interest in international football at the time.

Euro 08 no home nations qualified and Spain were just a bit too good for everyone else.

I remember the best thing about that Algeria game was having a BBQ during it and barely watching.

The only highlight I remember from that game was the random bird sitting undisturbed on the Algerian goal for ages while England did absolutely nothing.
