Btw, I don't want to hear any more talk of Kane being the man.

He's supposed to be the man, he's the captain and he was completely useless.

I don't care about some fancy passes 40m away from the goal.

You want to be considered the best striker in the world, you will yourself into at least one chance per game during occasions like these.

So glad someone else feels this way.

I've never seen such a casual captain, he was just casually jogging most the second half.

Lift the team up, put in some fighting spirit, you're in a bloody final!

His impact deep died off. And he didn't then go and occupy the centre backs. Really weird

A 27 year old, who has taken 1 in his career and missed it. Saka shouldn't be the 5th taker, but let's assume Grealish isn't great at penalties if at the age of 27 he's only taken one for his boyhood club.

A player with his supposed "incredible" technique should be able to take a pen

Casual, perfect world.

I guess he's just that type of player and character.

But even when he's scoring and playing well, he always seems stuck in 2nd gear. And that has nothing to do with his lack of pace.

He didn't win a single aerial duel today, fell whenever he felt the slightest contact, just awful.

I don't see why is he the captain. Shows no captain qualities.

And then you could see Maguire getting more and more annoyed that he had no outlet to play the ball too.

I was impressed by our back line this Euros.  Walker defensively has been a wall,  Maguire/Stones been brilliant and Shaw has been ace.

After that it just goes a bit tits up.

Surely no manager forces a player to take a penalty? Especially a people one like Southgate

Probably just asks who wants to take one and decide from there

Down to the experienced players not stepping up

Nah it was all Southgate.

Sterling, Grealish, Stones etc all wanted to take it but Gareth said no lads, the 19 year old who's never taken one in his life has got this.

Pens aren't really about technique though, are they?

If you can make one-touch pinpoint passes between multiple defenders, you should be able to hit the corner of the goal from the spot.

**** got no right to have a haircut like that unless he's taking penalties in the Euro final!

Can't wear socks in Totti's style!

Pens are pens...complete lottery, plenty of experienced players have ballooned them over before.  Is a bit weird to put Saka on at the end of them, but then it's stage not age innit.   Gutted though, I thought we had it even in pens with how it started.  Amazing from England though, and the best team generall won there as Italy were very good, but we have a future at least now.  Grealish I think won't ever become a starter, it's surely got to be Foden going ahead and I think both are ace, I just don't see how Grealish comes back here from this unless he moves and becomes phenomenal which he could well do.

I think this is nonsense to be honest and im no Kane super fan.

Short of dribbling from his own half what exactly could he do? The team lacked progression and possession throughout and in fact if he's not bossing Chiellini in the air(which he did a few times) and doing a great job of holding the ball then it would have been much harder for England.

There is a genuine question about his pace, especially as he gets older but thats the managers job to support him with by giving him runners, in past matches that has been Sterling but tonight he was 30 yards deeper than he has been.

He's our captain and for alot of the second half he looked so casual.  We looked so much better when we were closing down and I know you can't do that for 90 minutes but I just felt tonight he wasn't the player we know he can be.

I hate the fact that our striker is our captain but he didn't exactly put spirit into the team did he?  He's immune to being subbed and after Chiesa goes off(who probably would of scored at some point) and both of Italys CBs are on yellow cards, he has to put pressure on them.   I know it isn't soley his job but I don't feel he plays the captains role very well at all.

Half time of ET the camera panned to England, it's Henderson doing the job of what Kane should be doing.

That's a proper, "don't care about the goalkeeper/stage" penalty. You'd think most pros could probably do that, but it probably takes a certain mentality to be able to execute it :D

There's been a lot of that from defenders. No thinking, just pick your spot and smash it hard

Probably less pressure on them from their perspective so they can execute it clean/well.

You do have to question the bringing on with 1 minute to go. When's the last time Rashford/Sancho kicked a ball? In the warm up at the start of the game (apart from Rashford's tackle)? Can't be ideal prep.

I thought the same, give them 10/15 minutes or don't bother.

Of course they are....you can practice as much as you want but on that stage it can just go to pot.

It's a skill. If it was purely a lottery then you'd see more variety in the winners.

The team that takes the first pen usually wins. The better team with better players usually wins.

It's a skill

Obviously, noone is a 100% given to score as we've seen with Jorginho, Rashford and Belotti who're good penalty takers. But Sancho and Saka just looked out of place in the shootout.

It's almost worth sticking one or two specialist takers in the squad if you're going down that road. Especially with 26 man squads.

I really do think that this kind of sub backfires more than it works.

It did seem a bit NFL 'special teams' move but without the special in the end :(

That's my thoughts. Defenders aren't burdened with overthinking chances like attackers are, they can just step up and put their laces through it.

Sancho's penalty was awful as well, him and Rashford back to back felt a poor choice in hindsight as well given they were brought on especially for penalties. Just ramps up the pressure on Sancho when Rashford misses especially just before him, minor details etc. but these things matter.

I know pressure does funny things, but I can't believe how bad Sancho's penalty was. Like is that what's been doing in training that impressed Southgate?

yeah absolutely. Southgate overthought it, whereas Mancini placed full trust in the players.

OK some bad takes in here about penalties. I guess you guys think putting in golf is a complete lottery.

No of course not, there are lots of players better at taking penalties than others just like those who are better at putting in golf than others with poor short game.  I still think there's more of a lottery aspect to it in penalties in football though, with more variables in a penalty than say in a golfer on the green.  We shouldn't have had some of those taking the pens tonight, but if they say they're up for it and have previous form of taking pens then I don't disagree with them taking one or the manager putting them in for one.  Saka 5th was a travesty though and I feel for the poor kid.
