That’s a lot of African Internationals! Nice

Though it will show how much depth you have s as be how much you miss your African Internationals.

Winning in the league, and so is everyone you need to drop points. At least you’re doing your part.

Looking forward to seeing what shuffling your squad does to the intake.

The Africans in this save have formed the basis for my FM23 save. It's going to be very interesting!!!

REALLY pleased with how well we did this month with so many players missing. Pleased but also surprised.

I can't control how everyone else does. I wonder if Benfica are going to go unbeaten this season? We play them next. It would be great to take away their unbeaten record.

I'm looking forward to the intake too. I mentioned it with the intake preview. Could be anything though.

Liga Bwin. It was a tough month, but after losing to Benfica it might have been worse. We managed to draw against Gil Vicente & Porto rather than losing, and then returned to winning ways against Moreirense. We're still in 4th place after a tough month, but we're level on points with Guimaraes. Benfica are still unbeaten and I think they might go the whole way.

UEFA Champions League. I thought they were going to batter us, but we grabbed a late leveller and it gives us the edge going into the 2nd leg at home.

Youth Intake day. Mar 2067

I'm not going to go into too much detail here because it's unlikely any of these players will make an impact because there are not too many seasons left in the save. It's decent, (with a centre-half with good PA), but it's not amazing. Maybe I've had too many good intakes now and I'm nit-picking?

This player really interest me because of his 16 passing, 16 technique 13 vision, 14 off the ball and 14 long shots. Should I be re-training him as a DLP(s) in the MC line?

How much is his lack of pace going to hinder him?

His poor positioning is definitely going to hinder him.

What do you think?

Youth Intake review

I don't really want to have a look at the players in any great detail, (because they aren't very likely to have much of an impact), but I do want to have a look at some of the things we discussed in recent intakes.

1. Are players from good Nations poorer than they appear in a Day 1 report?

2. Are players from poor Nations better than they appear in a Day 1 report?

(Remember, we are only talking Primary Nationalities here).

d92848000bb00829f75801c7758886a2.png

(67a) is ranked 1 by PA and also ranked 1 by actual PA. (No change).
(67f) is ranked 6 by PA but is ranked 3 by actual PA. (Up 3). (This doesn't fit with my thinking). :thdn:
(67g) is ranked 7 by PA but is ranked 11 by actual PA. (Down 4). This does fit with my thinking).
(67h) is ranked 8 by PA and is also ranked 8 by actual PA. (No Change).
(67k) is ranked 11th by PA but is ranked 12 by actual PA. (Down 1). This does fit with my thinking.
(67o) is ranked 15th by PA but is ranked 16th by actual PA. (Down 1). This does fit with my thinking.

3 out of 4 results that change, change in line with my thinking, but because there is 1 result going the other way.

Of course there are likely to be other factors impacting the situation and I can't remember who mentioned it, (sorry), but it should be pointed out that (67f) also has an (Unamb) personality and the general thinking, (not always true), is that players with good personalities are relatively poorer than they appear and players with poor personalities are relatively better than they appear. So in the case of (67f), he has his Nationality suggesting that his PA rating is too high and his personality suggesting that his PA rating is too low. (So maybe there is some sort of cancelling effect). The players to look out for would be players who had double negatives or double positives influences.

Two players from that intake strike me as interesting: Joan and Etxaniz. Each needs work, but have a good base to start from.

Does retraining Etxaniz take up much PA?

I don't know how much PA a new position takes up. I used to know what it used to be, (but can't remember now), but it's probably different now anyway. The way I see it I can't really use him as an MR because he's so slow and if I play him as a sort of DM or WM then other issues come into play. I think DLP covers up his biggest inadequacies.

Considering (64a) Conceição (POR) *** started the season as the Reserve left sided striker, he's developing really nicely. 17 goals with 9 games still to play is loads more than I expected.

(63i) Keita (SEN)(FRA) ML was on loan in the 2nd tier, but after seeing this and noticing how few games he has played I have re-called him. He will immediately be in contention for us on the left flank.

Very Insecure. Apr 2067.

For about 20(ish) years the board have kept offering me 1 year contracts. Occasionally I have negotiated less money for a 2 year contract, but most of the time I don't bother. This time, (for whatever reason), was one of the times I did make it a 2 year deal. Thank God I did because we're in Apr 2067 and I'm contracted until Jun 2068. I think it's the only thing keeping me in the job at the moment. The fact that they are in such a secure place financially would seem to be working against me right now. :(

Apr 2067.

I think they're waiting for just 1 bad result to sack me. We've already qualified for the Champions League next season with 3 games remaining and leading Guimaraes in 5th by 11 points and I hope that makes a difference.

Liga Bwin. We had a good month with 4 wins from 4, conceding just 1 goals.

May 2067

We've lost just 1 of our last 21 league games , drawing 2 more. Only Benfica have scored more goals than us, (3 more), and nobody has conceded fewer goals. That's even if we ignore all the trophies, success and glory that I have brought this club over the last few decades. Is there no loyalty anymore?

Personally I think we've done really well. We were unlucky not to get past PSG in the Champions League, but I appreciate that we fell a little short of our target there. I also appreciate that we crashed out of the Allianz League Cup too early.

Goal-scoring GK's. 24 is a decent figure for Ako to score for the season, but he missed 3 so it could have been as many as 27. He's up to 290 career goals now and 300 is in sight.

Thoughts. Jul 2067

There are a few things playing on my mind that I thought I would share.

  • Being so close to the sack scared the life out of my towards the end of last season. I will admit that I didn't really pay too much/any attention to the targets the club set me because..... well because I never pay any attention to the targets the club set me. It seems that they were completely unaware of the financial issues that the club was facing, (because I resolved them), but that obviously came at a price. I honestly think they would have sacked me had we not won the Cup at the end of the season.
  • Ako is on 290 career goals and while I could have created a new manager and continued on with him, it would really have taken the shine off things for me. He's 32 years old now and is contracted for 5 more years, so realistically 390 career goals isn't an unrealistic target, (which seems complete madness).
  • We've got £91M in the bank and with players being released and retiring we're now spending less than £7M of our £12.5M wage budget. I'm turning down offers of £70M-£80M for our players but there is 1 who needs to go at the end of this season, (for somewhere in the region of £100M), so I really don't need to sell anyone else capable of playing 1st Team football.
  • The whole sacking thing has helped focus my mind on individual games and I think that was the reason we did as well as we did last season. I really had to put the effort in. I was tempted not to do the Squad Depth posts this season, but the truth is that they are just so important to me that I don't think I could continue playing the save effectively without them. We just have too many players and it's too hard to remember what the plan is for individual players without it. Who do I loan out? Who do I sell? Who plays in what team? I would just be lost without it.
  • In terms of what my goals are for this season, I think I definitely want to start better this season. Last season we were always trailing and we never managed to close the gap because Benfica didn't lose a single game all season and both them and Porto also drew fewer games than us. This season I want to take some points off Benfica, (they beat us by a 1 goal margin in both league games last season), and I also want to win 1 of the Cups because we may need that to keep me in a job. If and when we get offered a new contract, (fingers crossed), I will also be looking to negotiate it from a 1 year deal to a 2 year deal, (to give me some security). I also want us to go further than the 1st Knockout Round in the Champions League. I know we were unlucky to come up against PSG at that stage, (we won our Group and they didn't), and we were also unlucky not to progress anyway, but we still need to do better.

DL. It's frustrating but (57b) Trindade (POR) * DL is never going to reach his PA of 139. He's 25 years old and his CA is only 119. Although there will be some improvement, there won't be that sort of improvement. (60m) Lehner (POR) (SUI) * is in the same boat.

DC. Squad Depth

DC. The biggest problem at centre-half is that (54a) Fati (GNB)(POR) 6'1" *** only has 1 year left on his contract. He's 29 years old, valued at £110M and is currently getting paid £9.5M a year. I was all set to sell him, but I think he is probably the difference between me keeping my job and the save ending this season. I've offered him a new contract and have been able to re-sign him on a 4 year contract for £11M per year + a £7M signing bonus. On the 1 hand we lose out on the £110M transfer fee, and we also have to pay him £1.5M more than he was paid before, as well as coughing up a £7M bonus. On the other hand I think he will be key in me keeping my job until Ako retires. As it is, 35 year old (48b) Teixeira (POR) 6'3", who has 113 Caps for Portugal, will retire at the end of this season and I can't afford to lose both him & Fati.

MC. Although he had a decent season, (49a) Odhiambo (POR) has left on a free so we already have 1 midfielder to replace. DLP Tavares also retired after an impressive career where he accumulated 175 Caps for a much improved Cape Verde National side. I still can't decide what to do with (66a) Alves (POR) ***, after losing 3 central midfielders over the last 12 months I think perhaps he's most needed in the middle of the pitch. The problem is that I don't trust him to play for the 1st Team right now, (which isn't surprising for a 15 year old).

it seems very harsh to think about sacking you after 1 not so good season, hardly even a disaster, unless you have the most extreme chairman possible. IRL i don't believe a club would even consider the sack after your career, Wenger and Clough are examples of this.

Supertaça Cândido de Oliveira. Any win over Benfica is a good win and obviously happy to get the 1st trophy of the season in the bag.

Liga Bwin. We played 1 mid-week game so I rotated the squad once and we lost. We then only drew the PdF game after taking a morale hit. It's obvious to me that our Reserves are weaker than they have been previously, simply because we've sold/released so many players and also seen quite a few retired over the last 12-14 months. The problem is that we need to play them in order to boost their development so it's a double-edged sword.

Champions League Group Stage. This is a tough Group. PSG beat us in the Knockout Stages last season and Inter regularly get out of the group.

Records. I'm surprised that this also didn't set a gate receipts record, but maybe we will have to wait for a Champions league game when the prices are higher. It will be interesting to see how much more income the expansion brings. When I did my calculations before, it was based on domestic ticket prices, so inflates Champions league prices should help things.

Liga Bwin. 3 wins is great, but I'm not liking that we've already conceded 5 goals in 8 Liga Bwin games this season. The good news is that Benfica have already lost, so after 8 games nobody remains unbeaten.

I know that @_Ben_was impressed with (62a) Pereira (GNB)(POR) *** when he came through the intake and he has been doing ok.

He's scores 8 goals from 7 Liga Bwin games this season, all from open play.

He's scored 56 goals from 167 appearances, but actually it's 56 goals from 146(21) appearances which looks much better.

Liga Bwin. 3 good wins is great, (again), but we're still conceding too many goals, (again). We;re 2 points ahead of Benfica and 5 points ahead of Braga

Allianz League Cup. I think we might be in trouble here. If Varzim beat Coimbra by more than 2-1, they will top the group. :(

Goal-scoring GK's. 3 in 18 is well below Ako's normal level of scoring. He's scoring at a rate of better than a goal every 3 games over his career, but so far he's only managing a goal every 6 games this season. I wonder if that's because we're more functional than we have been in previous season.

Liga Bwin. 2 more wins in the league sees us with a 5 point gap in the league now as benfica lose a 2nd game. I'm not happy with the number of goals we're conceding, but we're conceding fewer than everyone else.

UEFA Champions League. A draw away to PSG will see us top the group, but as well as the Reserves have done so far, getting a result in Paris might be a little beyond them.

Goal-scoring GK's. Just 4 goals for Ako by the end of November is an absolute disaster of epic proportions. This time last season he was on 13 goals from 23 appearances. This season he's on 4 goals from 23 appearances. (A 9-goal swing). :(

I agree with winning the cup as being important last season

I feel you’ve gone through a lot with Belenenses in the last season or two.

It's strange. We're winning more games than I would have expected, but we're not playing as well as I would have expected. The knock-on effect of this is that Ako has scored considerably fewer goals.

We under-performed across the board last season, but we're on target at the moment at least.

  • Champions League. I think it's unrealistic to expect us to get to the Final, and my personal expectations are the Quarter-Final. Although it's "Required", I just don't think there is much chance of it happening.
  • Liga Bwin. The good news is that we're only "Required" to finish in the Top 4 in the league and I think that's already almost a done deal. (We're currently 10 pts ahead of Sporting in 5th).
  • Taça de Portugal Placard. It's less important at "Preferred", but I also think it's realistic. The only issue might come if we're drawn against Benfica before the Final, (but I can't control that).
  • The Allianz League Cup and the Supertaça Cândido de Oliveira are rated as "Not Important", so although we have 1 trophy in the bag already this season, I don't think it helps much.

cb574b57c289d2e5937b6fde67681b13.png

In Summary, I think that as long as we finish in the Top 4 in the league then we'll be safe no matter what else happens.

It's been a really tough period of transition what with losing so many players, but actually I really enjoyed last season, (and I personally thought we did really well). This season seems more of a struggle, but strangely enough we've won 21 of 25 games, losing 2 and drawing 2. It doesn't feel like that though. It feels like defeat is just a couple of games away the whole time. The 1st Team are decent and are a match for anyone, but despite how many games the Reserves have won, they haven't inspired me at all.

Looking a little deeper than results, this is where we find ourselves.

I can't do anything about signing high reputation players because we're not signing players at the moment, (even if they are products of our Academy). Everything else seems pretty straight-forward with the exception of reputation, (which surprises me a little).

b0dcf4ac3429312c81a78741f5d4bf8a.png

9,799 Belenenses.
9,744 Benfica.
8,826 Porto.
8,796 Braga.
8,369 Sporting.

It's still very tight between ourselves and Benfica, with just 55 reputation points between us. This could easily go either way this season.

Yep, in the 1st half of the season we have been basically just grinding results out without every really hitting top gear.

We're the top goal-scorers in the league and have also conceded the fewest, but I still don't think it's us in top gear.

We've won 23, drawn 2 and lost 1 of 26 league games, (and lead Porto by 11 points), but I notice that we haven't played Benfica yet in the league this season, (1st game must have been postponed), and as a result we play them twice in the last 4 games which is a ridiculous end to the season for us. We might need the 11 point lead we've built up when we get there.

I like intakes that are poorer than this one. This one is very good because (68b) is good enough to be a star in his own right I think, (with a PA of 155).

(68a) is indeed a non-African tall centre-half and I wonder if I will be able to develop him quickly enough to feature before the save ends. I think I will.

Oh I missed Jesus! Definitely has star potential. Actually just what you need in midfield too.

Will be interesting to see DC Ferreira develop.

I'm not sure how much if any impact these players are going to make, but I'm going to continue playing the save as if I was continuing on forever.

We have crashed out of both domestic Cups which has eased the fixture congestion a little, but the fixture list between now and the end of the season certainly looks stretching.

Feb & Mar 2068.

Liga Bwin. We really have just kept on winning and until recently I don't even think we're been playing particularly well. We're a massive 14 points ahead of Benfica now who have dropped 9 points in the last 5 games.

Liga Bwin. We have finished the season in really decent form and an example of this is that the last Liga Bwin game we played, (a 3-1 away win at Porto), we fielded the Reserves because I wanted to rest the 1st Team ahead of the Champions League Semi, and they comfortably beat the 2nd placed team in the league.

UEFA Champions League. Winning the 1st leg in such convincing manner is so good because it means that we can completely rotate the side for the 2nd leg. We smashed Liverpool and played the Reserves in the 2nd leg, and after smashing Man City by an even bigger margin we will be doing the same thing again.

In a save like this, there are things you expect to happen, things you hope will happen, and things that you would never even consider because they are too ridiculous.

Here is my All Time Best XI.

31f36b1c5abafd3eeba19d9c31aacfc5.png

Rosa is showing as having scored 300 goals, but I think it was actually fewer than that because some of them were for the B Team.
Simoes is showing as having scored 296 goals, but I think it's many more than that.
Abrantes is showing as 145 goals.
Khwinana is showing as scoring 138 goals.

Even #2 goal-scoring GK Simoes is showing as scoring 167 goals and I think he scored more that that too.

Ramos (now the manager of Marítimo), is down in the record books as having scored the most league goals for the club, (227), and Ako is only 36 behind him on 191.

3316c0344509cbb10ba25a6d3031b5ff.png

GK Simoes, (not to be confused with striker (44a) Simoes), is down in the record books as having made the most league appearances, (488), with Ako only 12 behind him on 476.

May 2068

Liga Bwin. We were in such good form that it seemed a shame to rotate the squad for the 2nd Benfica game, (ahead of the Champions League Final), but I did rotate the squad, (as much just to give the Reserves more game-time as much as rest the 1st Team), and they couldn't hack it. I can't complain about our league campaign though. 30 wins from 34 games with 2 draws & 2 losses is remarkable considering who we have lost in recent seasons. I had also hoped to hit a GK of +100, (we were on +95 going into the last game), but unfortunately it went the other way.

73a394a9f9652f31f8942ec28dd5f1f6.png

eb366251d51dedd3e53dd4c8a0defeb1.png

UEFA Champions League. We led Man City 6-0 from the 1st leg so I played the Reserves without a care in the World in the 2nd leg of the Semi, but the 1st Team were back for the Final where Real Sociedad, (who are a hell of a side by the way), were just too strong for us.

c22471e1f41626a17361982002a13114.png

Records. I have no idea where this explosion of form came from. (58a) Flores (NED)(SLV) *** had been decent for us for a couple of years, and 15 goals and 14 assists in all competitions last season seemed to be pretty impressive form for me. Previously our creative players had been playing in the middle of the pitch, but with so many playmakers leaving and the current players more.... functional than expansive, (58a) Flores (NED)(SLV) *** just seemed to take advantage of a creative gap and played out of his skin all season. As well as setting a new club record for assists in a season, (38 when the old record was 19), he also set a new record for Liga Bwin assists in a season, (28 when the old record was 19). This wasn't of my doing at all. This was simply the way the dynamic changed in the team when dominant playmakers were no longer available and he found himself more often with the ball.

One thing I have noticed however is that because our creativity is coming from out wide rather than central, while we've been a more successful team, our penalty & free-kick opportunities have dried up a bit. I need to get a dominant DLP in the side on the hurry-up.

(61j) Monteiro (POR) 6'0" is a decent GK, but he's not amazing and I should point out that my goal for the B Team isn't to win the most matches or score the most goals. It's simply used as a tool to develop our young players at the optimum level. As a result I often select players at the start of the season who aren't quite yet up to Liga 2 SABSEG standard, but by the end of the season they are absolutely smashing it. We often don't win the league in the 2nd tier and I don't care in the slightest about the results. So with all that in mind, 20 clean sheets in 34 games is pretty impressive, (especially when he's upfield taking free-kicks a lot of the time).

I wonder if I will get the chance to see exactly how good we could be at this level after Ako retires? I considered asking him to play for both the 1st Team and the Reserves, and that's still a possibility, (but perhaps just in his last season).

Yeah, Ako did ok in the end and finished the season on 14 goals, (with 3 misses I think). I think the problem was that we lost so many players that we had few partnerships at the beginning of the season and they take time to develop. On top of that, some of the key players in the squad are still pretty young.

The GK and back 4 were pretty settled, but in the midfield 20 year old (55c) Sousa (POR) * who has previously played as a CM(a) was filling in as a DLP, was partnered with (62a) Pereira (GNB)(POR) *** who had a ridiculous season, scoring 22 goals, (20 of them in the league). Out wide, (58a) Flores (NED)(SLV) *** absolutely smashed it on the left and (55b) Cunha (BRA) *** MR was none too shabby on the right. Up front, teenagers (64a) Conceição (POR) *** and (64g) Gonçalves (POR) * were given an opportunity to shine.

(50c) Ako (FRA) (GPE) 6'0" has 304 goals and 14 of them were scored last season.

(62a) Pereira (GNB)(POR) *** is our CM(a) and he had an absolutely stoning season. @_Ben_will be pleased to hear that his 20 league goals were not only enough for him to be our 2nd top goal-scorer in the league, but he was the 2nd top goal-scorer in the whole of Liga Bwin.

(58a) Flores (NED)(SLV) *** was the undoubted star of the season with his 21 goals and 38 assists. A couple of issues of the game ago my left wingers were the most potent attacking threats in myn team, but that was from the AML slot I think and I have seen nothing like this for ages. His previous best return was 15 goals and 14 assists last season, (which is decent in itself).

(55b) Cunha (BRA) *** MR came through the intake as a Brazilian, but he qualified for Portugal through residency and they have rewarded him with International recognition.

(64a) Conceição (POR) *** won the Liga Bwin Golden Boot as a teenager and is already a Senior International. He's contracted for 3 more years and I will be doing all I can to extend it. He's a big player for us.

(64g) Gonçalves (POR) * is a bit limited but certainly did a job for us. I will probably be looking to sell him at the end of this coming season.

[Edit]

Partnerships everywhere now, but I promise they weren't at the beginning of the season.

Not as strong in the Reserves, but not too shabby either.

Frustratingly, partnerships don't show up in the B Team, (even when they do exist).
