FM23 Leaderboards system

Can someone explain how do the leaderboards system work? For years we've had it exist and not once did we get an explanation of what it is. I was 6 at some point in FM21, played more on FM22 and somehow I was 500,000 or something. Seems absolutely random and makes no sense. I do not understand why is it there if they are not willing to disclose what it is. It is very minor but I liked having something to show for after playing 2000+ hours.

^ Screenshot from FM21, played up until 2085 on my FM22 save and won at a much more higher rate from 21 to 22. No logical correlation can be found between points and anything.

Maybe it's for competitive reasons see if you can beat your mates by getting the most points

It's only relevance to me is in indicating the season update is done and I can see my new season's fixture schedule.

Maybe someone from SI can chime in. The leaderboards have always been a mysterious part of FM to me.
