Unhappy players

Squad too big?

If I'm being honest, I have allowed the size of the squad to grow very big, to a point where it's impossible to keep all of the players happy, particularly as I can only select 16 in each match-day squad.

I've been surprised, pleasantly surprised, that I haven't had any players poached by other teams - my better players haven't received any offers from other football clubs, and the handful of players who have been offered contracts by other teams have all opted to stay… so far.

In total, I've released 14 players, but I've also signed 39.

Maybe it's time to put some players out of their misery and release them...

What's an optimum squad size at this level (Tier 10)?

A harsh reality, I think. I've just had a situation, AML who looked to be one of my best, new signing... He rated an 8.1 on his debut, and then turned in ratings of 6.3, 6.4, 6.5, 6.4. So he was benched for the next 3 or 4 games, then complained that I was destroying his career. When I pointed out that others were playing better, he said they were doing nothing he couldn't do. Well, yes - that's why I signed you. But they're actually doing it and you're not. He has now left the club. The problem I'm finding is that everyone who can improve the squad wants important player/star player status, which makes squad management difficult, if not impossible.

Which leads inevitably to the question of squad size. For me, 23 players is ideal - first choice and backup for every position, plus one (maybe two) players who can cover a few different positions but are happy to sit on the bench for most games. I think the problem we all have is wanting to sign 22 first-choice players when half of them will be backups for most of the season. Which leads us back to the beginning .

Edit to add: Like others, I'm enjoying this enormously. KUTGW

I can see plenty of players with 1, 1.5, and even 2 star maximum potential ability that can be first on the chopping block, if you  want to start culling numbers.

For example, D(C) Brett Digby. 30 years old, 1 star CA, 1 star PA. He is not going to improve, and you have multiple younger choices, that are already better players, and who still have potential to improve.

I think Warlock has good advice above, around the 23-25 players, as long as you have enough to cover every position, and I would also suggest at least 3 goal keepers. A first choice, a back up, and a youngster who can sit on the bench if one of the other two get injured, and may turn into your number one or two in the future.

And don't forget, you'll have 16 new players every March/April to add into the mix

That's the dilemma I currently have at left-back. New signing Sam Sharrock-Peplow is putting in average performances of 6.66 from 11(0) appearances, whereas Oliver Ritchie has 6.79 from 9(0) and Matt Jones has 7.10 from 0(3).  Jamie Swinburn has 6.83 from 1(9) but all but one of those appearances has been at DC.

Yes. Exactly that. Although I'm finding now that the majority of my new signings who want Star / Important Player will accept Squad Player status during negotiations. I wish I'd realised that earlier. The one that really bugs me is the players who lock-in "Will improve training facilities" because I know I'm not going to be able to deliver on that and it will cause me a problem further down the line...

It's amazing, at this level, how quickly a player can fall from, say, 2.5 or 3.0 stars to 1.0 or 1.5 stars based on the arrival of just one new signing who has a very high Current Ability.

Also, I'm realising that the judgement of my backroom staff with a Judging Current / Potential Ability of 2s and 3s is probably a lot less reliable than the backroom staff with those attributes in double-figures I'm used to working with in FM.

I assume, at some point, there'll be a transfer deadline at Tier 10? (even though, so far, I've been able to sign players continuously both inside and outside the transfer windows).

If you can get one or two players from early intakes, until you're able to start upgrading your youth recruitment and training, then that will be pretty good.

Sometimes you'll get a freak intake and get a heap of kids that will fill up your team, and other intakes, none of them will make it to first team.

Like everything else with the game, luck of the draw

Let the culling begin...

Not a mass culling, but a start...

It pained me to release my captain, Brian McKean and my vice-captain, McKlane Blendon but, let's face it, neither were realistically going to play for me and I'd signed much better wingers since I appointed them Staveley Miners Welfare captains at the start of the season.

Selecting new Captains

18h_captains5.png.9099640540902115f76e17eaf094187e.png

In selecting a Team Captain I wanted someone who was going to play most weeks so, out of the leading contenders, Tom Bell stood out with his 3.5 star rating and a 6.95 from 8(0) starts.

18h_captains2.png.ae2ae186f7d28a1e7d3271cea5f615ac.png

Unfortunately, nobody else jumped out at me. I would have loved to make DC Charlie Rutt vice-captain but he only has a Leadership of 2.

So, with no other obvious candidates, I opted to make my Player / Assistant Manager Pat Lindley vice-captain.

Preview: Rossington Main (away)

Northern Counties East League Division 1 (19)

19_Preview.png.51a199d01778d26e6f7701c2aad51f33.png

By the final whistle today, we'll be exactly halfway through the season and we'll have a much better idea of if we're serious contenders for top spot and the one automatic promotion place.

It won't be easy, as we travel to play 3rd place Rossington Main who are five points behind us.

Losing right-back Kane Patterson to injury this week in training was a huge blow.

19_injury1.png.5c457cdb03ece8dc2e0a1a2c4100a910.png

Normally, I'd rest Nathan Waterson and ease him back gently, but with Kane's injury, Lewis Farmer will have to play deeper at right-back so I'll need Nathan on the right-wing.

19_teamsheet.png.53207938017152501c2f4bd072b2167a.png

Charlie Rutt returns at centre-back in place of David Richardson.

And new signing D'Andre Wainwright starts up front in place of Mitchell George.

Rossington Main v Staveley Miners Welfare

Northern Counties East League Division 1 (19)

Welfare Ground, Rossington.

19_tactics1.png.aee66d75c0a13f7db6517c382f98107a.png

This was a very tight game that could've gone either way.

Both defences were on top and, whilst both teams created chances, neither Rossington nor us really threatened the goalkeeper too often.

That's where we should have done better, we didn't get enough shots on target and we didn't work their goalkeeper enough.

Both D'Andre Wainwright and Waide Fairhurst nearly scored with both having an effort cleared off the line.

Ultimately, it came down to one goal and, sadly for us, Rossington Main scored it.

19_tactics2.png.7217f3709d3cf9150597777d03c1b366.png

We did try to attack more in the second-half, as we chased the game, but it wasn't our day.

Football is about fine margins. I think a draw would've been a fair result but Rossington Main found a way to just edge it and take the three points.

We shake ourselves off, dust ourselves down, and go again next week at home to Parkgate.

At the halfway point of the season, we find ourselves second in the division, three points behind the leaders. Beverley Town suffered a surprise loss at home to Ollerton Town today so it’s still all to play for in the second-half of the season.

This was a real Jekyll and Hyde performance from us.

In the first-half, I don't know what was up with us but we just didn't get going at all.

Parkgate were all over us, scored after 11 minutes, and could have had more

20_tactics2.png.97a58490c52af87fbd9a9970a0b3df6b.png

We made some changes after the break and improved tremendously. We were like a different team second-half.

On as a substitute, Ryan Charnley, equalised for us... and we were very close to grabbing a winner.

Preview: Selby Town (away)

No injury concerns, but two players we need to wrap up in cotton wool still.

21_injury1.png.fac74e42360f429d449a07306aee2363.png

Our form has been a bit more inconsistent recently than earlier in the season so I'm making a few changes today. Tactics wise, I'm going to ask the lads to be More Disciplined as I'm not sure Be More Expressive was working that well for us.

Team-wise, Lewis Cox returns in goal. This may be a bit unfair on Sam Agius, who has done reasonably well and saved a penalty, but our slightly iffy run has coincided with Sam's time between the sticks.

Sam Sharrock-Peplow comes back in at left-back in place of Oliver Ritchie.

New signing, Liam Marrs, comes in at right-back, allowing me to push Lewis Farmer forward to right-wing and switching Nathan Waterston to the left-wing. That also means, Sonny Best, can play up top alongside D'Andre Wainwright.

The fallout from that is Waide Fairhurst drops to the bench.

And another new signing, Steven Johnson-Fikula (DRC) gets a place on the bench, with Josh Bowkett (DC) missing out.

Selby Town v Staveley Miners Welfare

Northern Counties East League Division 1 (21)

selby_town_ground.png.996061b7a83d29ae12907cc236ae3316.png

Fairfax Plant Hire Stadium, Selby.

21_report.png.0608fdd2bec8856512f0056ffc3a07fb.png

This was a mixed bag of a game from our perspective. I thought we were solid, and never overly troubled, but despite having a lot more possession than Selby Town, they created a lot more chances than us, but we restricted them to long-range efforts in the main. I'm not sure if it's coincidental, or not, but Sam Agius had only kept two clean sheets in nine appearances. I reinstate Lewis Cox and we keep a clean sheet.

We took the lead in the 8th minute from an own goal when their defender tried to cut out Lewis Farmer's cross, after good work from D'Andre Wainwright.

21_tactics1.png.4c4e646121fd07af2a5bc02f51366dfc.png

At half-time, we made a few tactical changes to the roles in midfield and looked to focus play down the wings more.

21_tactics2-HT.png.d3afdac294fec18cf67f68c90c9dbb0e.png

Our three new strikers had been struggling to settle. Today, was the first time I'd started two of them together and I thought Sonny Best and D'Andre Wainwright both had good games.

On the hour mark, they combined well for our second goal with D'Andre calmly dispatching Best's cross.

We did think about shutting up shop in the last 10 minutes but, as Selby Town weren't really threatening our goal, we left it as things were.

All-in-all, a comfortable, and pleasing 2-0 away win.

What I really like about Isaac Baldwin is his versatility in that he can play anywhere across the back four, as well as anywhere down both wings.

I also like his attitude in that he was willing to listen during negotiations to how I'd like to play him and was happy to sign on a Fringe Player basis.

To be fair, I see Isaac as my back-up to Sam Sharrock-Peplow at left-back and his versatility means he'll be the first outfield player named on the bench.

I'm looking to build a smaller, more streamlined, happier squad here at Staveley Miners Welfare and I think Isaac will fit in very well.

Staveley Miners Welfare sign Kellett

21b_Kellett0.png.2ab45384b436e683875c178e33b0ad6d.png

Sam Kellett joins us after, surprisingly, not being picked up by anybody since his release from Blackpool's Academy.

I expect him to establish himself as our Number One goalkeeper and he will go straight into the team.

We've been working hard to find a Number One and have brought a lot of goalkeepers in on trial. Sam, without doubt, is the best we've had come into Inkersall Road.

Being brutally honest, I see Regan Upton as nothing more than a stop-gap signing for now. I'm looking for two right-footed centre-backs and two left-footed centre-backs. Left-footed, I have them in Charlie Rutt and Steven Johnson-Fikula and Bolton Makwedza is my starting right-footed centre-back.

Ideally, I'd like young David Richardson to be the second right-footer, he's made 6(0) appearances this season for an average rating of 6.90 so I believe he's good enough. Unfortunately, David's unhappy currently because we agreed he'd be an Important Player. I remain hopeful of winning David over but, if I don't, with the transfer deadline end of March, I've brought Regan Upton in as a right-footed contingency.

My thoughts on squad building...

... at Staveley Miners Welfare

After learning some lessons about what squad status to offer players to try and keep them happy, bearing in mind how quickly one key signing can affect the star ratings, albeit that I have to take the opinions of my backroom staff (with Judging Current / Potential Ability of 2 and 3) with a large pinch of salt, I'm trying to build a more streamlined squad, of players with 2-3 stars, on a Playing Time status that's likely to be sustainable.

21e_squad1.thumb.png.920bc54c5ea02870a0dbec4e0ba5f1cb.png

21e_squad2.thumb.png.e32cfa9d6e2940f0b69665d5bed3a227.png

Ideally, I want two players for each position, possibly three for key positions, and then rely on the youngsters or the best free agent I can bring in at short notice, for emergencies.

I can still sign players until the end of March so there's no immediate panic anywhere.

21e_Transfer_Rules.png.594c8d3355d722d54c9021dc72b43163.png

I thought now (next few posts) would be a good time to reflect on where the squad is at currently.

I'm hoping to keep a settled squad for the remainder of the season, with minimal changes, because, if I can keep those players happy, I think a settled squad and team will give us the best chance of, hopefully, gaining promotion for Staveley Miners Welfare this season.

Goalkeepers

I've got my fingers-crossed in the goalkeeping department. I've just signed Sam Kellett to be our Number One goalkeeper and he'll make his debut in the next game. If Sam works out, then everything else is set.

Sam Agius is the back-up with good development potential.

Chester Rowlands and Johnny Lawrence are both youngsters, training with the first-team, with bags of potential but nowhere near ready for senior competitive games yet.

And the unfortunate Lewis Cox, who I recalled last week and he kept a clean sheet at Selby Town, is unhappy, I can't blame him as he was Number One, then dropped for nine games so Sam Agius could start, then recalled for one game where he did nothing wrong, and now I'm about to drop him again so Sam Kellett can start. Lewis is understandably unhappy and feels he has been treated unfairly. If Lewis wants to leave, I'll let him go but, for now, I'm keeping him hanging around the place in case I need him.

The starting shirt is Kane Patterson's to lose. After a shaky start, his performances have improved and I hope they will improve further with a settled team.

Liam Marrs is his back-up and with his ability to play anywhere across the back-four, he'll always be in contention for a place on the bench as a minimum.

Isaac Baldwin is left-footed, so more of a left-back, but with his ability to play anywhere across the back-four, and anywhere down both wings, Isaac will  almost certainly be on the bench if not starting.

Bolton Makwedza is my starting right-sided centre-back currently and Lewis Farmer, who covered at right-back recently when Kane was injured, I see more as a midfielder who can play right or central.

There's very little to choose between Sam Sharrock-Peplow and recent signing Isaac Baldwin. For now, I'm going to give Sam every opportunity to try and keep him onside, but also because I think he has more potential.

Liam Marrs is right-footed and more of a right-back, but he provides good cover.

On the left, there's nothing much to choose between Charlie Rutt and Steven Johnson-Fikula. Charlie currently has the shirt as he's been here all season and hasn't let us down. Steven is a new signing and will need to be patient for now but his Fringe Player status should mean I can keep him happy.

Bolton Makwedza is the starting right-sided centre-back.

David Richardson and very recent signing Regan Upton provide right-sided back-up. I hope to keep David around as he's young, with lots of potential, potential to be much better than Regan, but he's very unhappy at the moment as he's not getting Important Player playing time.

In central midfield, my captain, right-footed Tom Bell, is likely to start every week as long as he maintains his form.

We've just signed left-footed, Lamin Jagne to, hopefully, form a central midfield partnership with Tom.

Callum Hope and Sam Wright are our back-ups.

I'm sure Lewis Farmer can do a job for us in midfield, but I see him more as a right-winger.

Regan Upton is a back-up central defender (see Centre-backs post).

Pat Lindley is my player / assistant manager, our vice-captain, and he's unlikely to see much playing time.

Lewis Farmer is our starting right-winger.

Nathan Waterston is his back-up but, as Nathan can play on both wings, he's currently competing for a start on the left-wing.

Alex Wood probably doesn't have a long-term future at Staveley Miners Welfare, but he is providing cover and does have potential to improve a bit.

Left-wing

I'll be honest, I have a real dilemma on the left-wing, specifically regarding Sonny Best.

I'd be very interested in thoughts on what you'd do?

21g_ml4.thumb.png.18c16030ec3ae7267db0b2353f93b300.png

So we signed Sonny Best as a Star Player to play left-wing but, what I missed, was that Sonny can play AML, AMR and SC very, very well but he cannot play ML at all which is the left-wing role we currently use.

We're currently training Sonny as a ML and he's improved, slightly, to Makeshift but is still not suitable to the ML role.

[Discussion on Sonny Best to continue on Forwards post]

That means that, currently, on loan Ernest Ofosu and right-winger Nathan Waterston are competing for the left-winger starting role.

I also have dilemmas with the Striker roles as well.

Firstly, I bought Sonny Best to play left-wing (as explained in the Left-wing post above), but my backroom staff rate Sonny as, arguably, our best player and one of our best strikers.

Secondly, whilst I've recently signed Sonny BestD'Andre WainwrightMitchell George and Luca Nelson, three who are rated as better strikers than the those I started the season with, none of them have settled and started scoring goals, which leaves my original strikers Waide FairhurstMax Rhodes and Ryan Charnley as our leading goal scorers.

Top Goal Scorers

Strikers only

21g_sc13.thumb.png.389c178772d2e21448320e13f3372dfa.png

But, in a nutshell, I have no idea who my best strikers are and I probably, no I do, have too many strikers at the football club.

I'd be very interested in thoughts on what you'd do?

The ones that are scoring should keep the shirts. They are non contracts so not costing anything sitting in the stands.

Thanks, @KibworthBull.

That's kind of what I've been trying to do, playing the in-form goal scorer (either Waide Fairhurst or Ryan Charnley) alongside one of the new strikers to try and integrate them. That coincided with our inconsistent recent form, although it wasn't the only reason for it.

Last game, against Selby Town, I went for two of the new signings starting, D'Andre Wainwright and Sonny Best with no goals between them, and we won 2-0 with them both instrumental in forcing the own goal to give us the lead, and then Sonny set-up D'Andre for our second.

I think I've created a situation where I have too many options...

😂🤣

Something to consider is that attribute ratings don’t seem to mean a lot at this level.

I have had strikers with finishing of 5, and pace of 12, score twice as many goals as strikers with finishing of 12, and pace of 5.

It seems strange, but just get the ball forward, let the fast guys chase it, and eventually they will put it in the net, because the keepers are generally rubbish at this level too.

As someone else mentioned just ride with the hot hand at this stage unless there's a striker with abilities that fit what system you're trying to run. Also I feel like Best would be a lot better of a winger then a striker although he doesn't really have that positional experience as a 442 winger I suppose.

Sorry if I'm a bit late to be of help...

For me, performances beat attributes every time. Go with the players who are performing. Having said that, I wouldn't hesitate to play Best at ML for at least 5-10 games and see how he does.

A few years ago in a Man Utd save, I played Ander Herrera as a RW, even though he didn't even have a "red" capability in the role. He was my top performer in that save. I didn't need him to be a traditional winger - all pace and dribbling. I needed him to sit out wide and ping pin-point crosses to the forwards, which he did to a superb standard.

It certainly is a completely different feel to FM Football Management at Tier 10 level.

This looks like your typical game of two halves with us 3-0 up at the break, and then only narrowly winning 3-2 by the final whistle.

D'Andre Wainwright scored two and Sonny Best also scored in the first-half and it was great to see both our strikers scoring.

It could easily have been four as Lewis Farmer had his penalty well saved by their goalkeeper.

We were comfortably on top in the first-half, Sam Kellett made a difference in goal with two big saves and his distribution was at another level from what we're used to.

I'm not sure what happened after the break to be honest. Harrogate certainly put us under more pressure, but they didn't really create that many clear cut chances.

I put it down to a lack of concentration. We should have defended our penalty area better for both goals and, given Sam Kellett got both hands to the first one, he'll think he probably should have saved it. And he'd probably be right.

One thing I have noticed is that our left-sided central defender, Charlie Rutt, tends to tire in the second-half and we often concede after I've substituted him off. It's frustrating because, when Charlie isn't fatigued, he's arguably our best defender.

This was a very big win for us, made all the more sweeter because we came from behind to win.

Our right-sided centre-back Bolton Makwedza was unusually nervous before the game and, when I spoke to him, he was worried about his encounter with Kieron Ceesay. We did our best to build him up and send him out confident but his nerves were showing and, almost inevitably, Ceesay beat Bolton to a header in our penalty area to give Horbury the lead.

The players encouraged Bolton, as did we on the sidelines, and Bolton grew into the game and played well alongside Charlie Rutt.

Around the half hour mark, we changed to Positive and asked our two wingers to attack more and hit early crosses.

Overall, I thought we were the better team and we deserved our win.

Mitchell George didn't score, but he was involved in both goals.

Mitchell won the penalty when he was shoved from behind and Lewis Farmer made up for his miss from the spot last week, by placing his 38th minute spot kick low into the bottom corner.

Four minutes after the restart, Mitchell crossed low into the danger area and D'Andre Wainwright nearly took the net off the goal frame with a thunderous shot into the roof of the net.

D'Andre almost scored a second goal when he hit the post on 66 minutes.

I was pleased with Sonny Best's contribution (6.7) playing in an unfamiliar ML position.

After the way we played against Horbury Town, once we'd settled down, I didn't have an reason to make changes.

So an unchanged starting 11 and matchday 16.
